I second this. DDG, Searxng and various LLM are my daily drivers depending on the queries. I don't recognise DDG being bloated with ads like Google. I have adblockers but I put sites like DDG on the whitelist because hey support the good guys.

Is it topical? Regional? Does OP have malware that is transforming the browser document? Is OP searching for niche content and confusing singular domain results for ads? Has DDG shifted owners and doing some tests?

I would like to know more.

Had that issue when trying to use the app of one of the major package delivery services. Can't register email because it is in use. Can't login because password is not correct. Can't reset the password because I get a weird error message. My credentials worked for some other part of their services but not here. Tried to contact support about it twice but got no response so I ditched using it. I'll survive getting email and SMS notifications, thank you. If I need to send something I'll just use one of the other services instead. The old dinosaurs of delivery services are so far behind in technology and user experience it's crazy but they rely on competing in b2b so it doesn't matter to them.

These are valid points. But still, I think there is little point in repeating templates just because making something worthwhile is challenging. Especially in art of any kind. I mean, it's been a mantra since mid last century at least that everything is done and yet artists of every discipline keep pushing the envelope to achieve something original.

Anybody else getting enough of retro themed arty horror flicks?

Wardrobes and sets that look like 1980s magazines and catalogues but not like 1980s real life, palette with deep blacks and super saturated accents, post processing as if shot on film with optical lens effects and distributed on magnetic video tape though obviously shot and edited one hundred percent digital, modern synthwave heavy soundtrack, titles in red text on black background... You know the entire package. It's starting to feel lazy. For some reason it seems to be the aspiring young directors first feature length flick for the last few years or so. Damn I'd be more impressed by retro theming be the 90s or 00s that should be these directors genuine era of nostalgia.

I'm thinking of buying an electric guitar

I plonk bass and klink keyboard. I'm shite at both but it doesn't matter. It's just for fun because I need sorta meaningful things to entertain myself. I live in an apartment so I'm playing with headphones. I've got the Nux Mighty Plug that sounds all right but the lag on Bluetooth audio is very frustrating. Playing along by ear is ok though annoying with the lag but it is literally impossible for watching video tutorials or play along to tabs. I'm considering the Mooer S800 electric guitar with built in effects, amp sim and headphone amp with Bluetooth and hopefully not the lag. The idea is to be able to simply pick it up and shred away when the cosmic vibes align and then put it away again. No cumbersome setup or necessary clean up that kills the momentum. I think €400 seems to be a fair price for the instrument considering it's all included to get started. Should I consider other options?

Ditching Spotify - but for what other service

Update; I went with Tidal. I'm a bit disappointed that no competitor has functionality like Spotify Connect without licensed hardware. I got Tidal running under Mopidy on my media box but I have to use a web browser and the Mopidy front end that works so so instead of the mobile app or desktop client. I don't feel like shelling out for another third party service or change my amp when I've got a decent setup for everything else. I already miss the ability to seamlessly go from mobile to speakers to a computer in a different room. Weird because it really doesn't sound very complicated to me when every Tidal client is already online and disconnects when playback starts on another device. --- I'm getting fed up with Spotify because all the usual reasons and now the CEO calling music "content" with "nearly no production costs". Fuck that, time to vote with my wallet after being a user after an early beta invite. What I want is a service that 1. pays *music* creators decently, 2. that has a comparable catalogue outside the charts 3. and that works well with a good UI on Windows, Linux, Android 4. and either headless on a RPi or has a integration with Kodi with high bitrates or even lossless. Searching for comparisons drowns me in click baits and auto-generated *content*. I'd appreciate some real world experiences. Edit; Thank you kindly for advice on self hosting etc. I am well aware of that option, a hardy sailor from the olden days as I am. Nowadays though I can and *want* to pay for the hassle free immediate availability music catalogue as a streaming service that in turn pays the artists for their delicious sounds in my ear holes.

I haven't looked at the Lemmy API, but generally speaking hard or not is subjective. Try it, get your hands dirty. Take a stab at testing how it works. Set some very basic targets. Split it up into tasks. If one task proves more complicated than expected, split it up into smaller tasks. If you get stuck, move to another task. You can always get back to those later. Things fall in place with experience.

    Today I bottled my Chardonnay

I started it in early march with the idea that I wanted a dry but fresh and somewhat complex wine for summer. I infused some oak chips with rum, but only had them in for a week something early on with the hope that the harshness would dissipate with gases and what is left behind becomes subtly integrated in the wine. I was going for notes and slight tannins as opposed to the super dry that was my autumn wine. While fermenting it was about 19-21°C in the room with a cold draft by the floor that probably made it more like 16-18°C down there. I didn't think of picking a yeast ahead so I went with the generic one that came in the box. It's been a very interesting ride in this relatively short period of time. The fermentation was very slow, as expected by the temperature and draft. It stopped bubbling but had plenty of sugar left in it so I racked it to oxygenate, added yeast nutrients and kept swirling it gently daily until I got it going again. Last taste was a month ago and it was not good, hoping it would mature after bottling and otherwise make it a learning experience. Today, much to my surprise, it is young but damn delicious already. Great taste, great mouthfeel. Tannins but not overly so, hints of vanilla, oak and rum. Easy to drink and yet some interesting flavours to explore. It's all I was hoping for. But now I have a new problem. While bottling it, I accidentally overfilled some bottles that I balanced into a glass, and then clumsy me spilled the last splash from the vessel into the glass too. Now I'm sitting outside on a lovely warm and sunny Sunday afternoon, glass in hand, the wine is oxidized and can not be returned to the batch. I'm not sure what to do about it. Please advice.

    Refractometers

I ordered a cheap chinese optical refractometer from Amazon to use for convenience instead of a traditional hydrometer. It seemed accurate enough after calibration, I don't expect magic or lab results. Ballpark is fine by me. I got suspicious when my cider and wine have kept stopping at 1.020-1.025 and nothing I whatever I tried would only make them bubble for another few days and reduce a couple of degrees Oe. So I did a reading with my hydrometer to verify. Yep, the SG for the cider ~1.000 and with the wine in negatives. Checking out the refractometer it says it is for beer. Is there a difference for wine and beer refractometers? Is is this refractometer, cheap chinese ones in general or is it me? Cheers Edit: twas me

Annars är RALT + 6 eller RALT + paragraf (§) också outnyttjade. Nu har jag fixat till det för egen del i Windows med AutoHotkey (>!'::°), men det vore faktiskt användbart om det blev standardiserat. I realized why I like friendships with lesbians

I'm a middle aged heterosexual man and I've been in various circles in my life where I've had lesbian friends and acquaintances. I was just thinking how much I've appreciated those interactions and how I currently miss having lesbians around me. Not because we stopped being friends, mind you, but due to my dynamic life and me being shit at staying in touch I've floated away from people that I appreciate. Anyway, then I started thinking why is that? Am I fetishizing lesbians, craving what I can't get etc? I like women who are confident so is it a sexual or psychosexual thing? It made me a bit worried because that does not sound very nice, Freud and mothers and all that jazz... But then I realized that this is not why. It's because they don't act and treat me like a man, like a male person, like a sexuality - but that for them I'm 100% a person. If I'm entertaining or funny or interesting, it's because **I** am entertaining or funny or interesting. No interference from deep rooted primate reproductive brain behaviour, and at the rare occasion it's popped up, it's something we can play off and dismiss. Even though I have and always had women friends, it's a different thing. Regardless our relationship, I'm always a man. It's inescapable. My friendships with lesbians have always had this special vibe. It's like what I'd imagine a good sibling be like, but I wouldn't know because I'm a lone child. Yeah, I miss that vibe. Edit: thanks autocorrect

    Spicing up a bland cider

UPDATED I decided to try to make a cider from supermarket el cheapo concentrate just for the fun of it, 2/3 pear and 1/3 cranberry/raspberry. It's gone from 48 Oe to 0 Oe in ten days, so I guess so far it is technically a success. I've been degassing it vigorously and it's going to rest now for a week before I rack it. I had a taste and I can taste the alcohol and some faint flavors from the concentrate, but oh boy it is so bland it makes my tap water seem flamboyant. On a whim I sliced up a thumb of ginger and dropped in, hoping it would give some flavor. It's what I had at home. Any other suggestions of how to add some taste? I've got xylitol, citric acid and tannin at home. I don't want to add more sugary fruits because it already tastes a little bit too boozy for the lack of body. There will be a bit sugar before bottling for carbonation though. UPDATE: Racking and having a taste a week later and it's a world of difference. Thanks for the advice @DigitalNirvana@lemm.ee! The ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon brought some body that it was desperately lacking. I think I may have had a little much ginger, two large thumbs in the end, because it's a bit heavy on the ginger basement in the flavour. We'll see how it matures. Surprisingly it was still gassy, despite vigorous shaking until flat a week earlier. Maybe the sugars in the ginger were enough to give it another go. I brought alon g the nutmeg and the cinnamon because why not. Now it's going to rest for another week and then it be another racking, sugaring it up for carbonation and bottling. Considering the low aspirations, I hope it will be ready for some early bottles by Christmas.

    Kuivaa läppää

Heya. Swede with Finnish parents here. I understand "general" Finnish or at least follow the gist and I can sorta speak but my writing is terrible, hence this question in English. I heard on the Swedish news a Sverigefinne use the term "kuivaa läppää" that I've never heard before. Dry... flap? I got it that it means approximately "unfunny" or "joke in bad taste", but my wonders - what kind of flap? And why is it dry? I'm trying to keep my mental image clean but I'm struggling here.

    Wine from sour quince

I'm thinking of harvesting a local bush of Japanese quince (Chaenomeles Japonica) and make a small batch of fruit wine. Since they have a very strong citrus flavor, I'm thinking to lean in on it and make something like a very sour apertif. I've made wines before but it was ages ago with good results, some fruit wines and kit wines, but nothing similar to this. Any thoughts or suggestions? Should it be combined with some sweet fruits or raisin maybe? Any particular yeast better suited than others? Or some recipe idea as a starting point? Cheers!

What is an musical instrument would you like to know how to play?

And why? Not an instrument you already play. Pick something else. I'll start. Saxophone, so I can climb the rooftops and play my neighbours some cheesy sax porn solos of the eighties.

What was the time a pet showed some serious signs of intelligence?

I'll start. My then gf and I had a chihuahua that just happened to be the most tiny and most diva and most clever little dog I've ever met. Tiny, incredibly cute, extreme ego and confidence, a terrible piercing bark and had some wild mood swings on top. He'd go from cuddly to nuclear warfare in a second of something displeased him. He was the eldest and the leader of his little pack and he kept all of them wrapped right around his paw running a little dogmatic terror state. But he took his responsibilities seriously and was always up in front if there was a threat to them. Be it an angry German shepherd or a double parked electric scooter. Nobody messed with his pack - except for him, obviously. Our little beast was very well aware of his cuteness, and his craving for adoration knew no end. He'd be walking down the street next to me, obviously refusing to yield for anyone, and as we pass some café tables, he'd throw himself flat on the ground, legs pointing in all directions. We called it that he did a doormat. The intent was to throw us under the bus as his keepers so that he'd maximize the aahs and oohs and attention went compliments from the people sitting in the café. But this is just the backstory. He was vain, and we knew he was clever, but also of this is still learned behaviour with a previously verified outcome. No, what really set it apart was that one time we were at home, the entire couch occupied by humans, dogs, and generally not him in particular. He was strutting around, being grumpy that others had taken his rightful seat, and nobody would disappear into nothingness for his approval. Not an uncommon thing, but he has plenty of other comfy spaces to be, communal and his very own. We know if we lift him up now, he'll try force some other dog down just because he wants space for himself, and we weren't having it. The other dogs were there first today and it's their right as much, so tough luck bud. After some time, I notice him staring into the lights off bedroom. He looks at me, turns back to the bedroom and just keeps staring at it. I tell my gf that he is staring into the void and it seems to be staring back at him. We watch him as he keeps staring at nothing. By now he is an old dog and has already shown signs of deterioration. I ask him what's up and he shows some signs of anxiety, tail down, tapping feet, mild whimper. I call for him, there's nothing there, come to daddy. No response. We figure he's lost it now, the creeping senility we've suspected is real. So I keep talking to him, calming him, approach to turn on the lights and show him around that there is nothing there. He stands eagerly waiting, full focus on me as I come closer. Then - tail high, he runs as fast his tiny legs can carry his body, to the seat where I was sitting, barking at my gf to be picked up into the couch. And it dawns on me. It was all a ruse! He came up with the clever plan to lure me away from his desired spot. If he acts anxious I'll get worried and get up, freeing up a vacancy on the couch, and then it's a fair race who gets it first. His smug posture standing in my seat was what gave it away. He was not anxious at all, he was not afraid, that I'm not anthropomorphizing but that he knew exactly what he was doing. A multi step sequential plan with a clear goal in mind that he came up with from no be prior training. If that is not intelligence, I don't know what is.
