Hello peoples, We've had a Canary home security system since its crowdfunding days. They never did much to improve the experience, chances of connecting during critical moments (and/or recording similar) seemed to go down and down, sensors were unhelpful ("air quality is bad" Okay, HOW is it bad?) and all of the ads in the free version makes me feel like they're always looking for a way to monetize me and my data. I finally canceled my subscription this month and am looking for a replacement solution. Here are my requirements: • Wide-angle camera with night vision and audio via a hardwired network port. I can connect from camera to network/NAS/etc • Self-hosted. I have a NAS that could help with recording and can deploy a raspberry pi† – but also I could get a turnkey box if that's better. **No** cloud solutions unless I'm hosting the cloud and can do end-to-end encryption. • Viewable live footage from my mobile device, even when not in my home wifi network • Motion sensing and recording for up to 24 hours' worth of motion instances Here are the nice-to-haves: • No systems built by a Chinese company that is prrrrobably a front for their government and/or could contain their own backdoor code • Extendable to bring in future cameras Any advice from you Thunderbirds would be f-a-b. Improved Wi-Fi connection stability Personal experience: After updating, I encountered a temporary issue with the Matter implementation. Temperature and humidity sensors were reporting 0.0 values in the Apple Home app for about an hour post-update. However, this resolved itself without any intervention after approximately an hour.
I picked up a couple of these fans for my home, and after some initial setup quirks, they're working reliably with Matter and HomeKit. HomeKit lets you adjust fan speed and oscillation; you cannot adjust the oscillation angles. These fans can push a lot of air if you want, and on lower settings they're totally silent while still providing a pleasant breeze. Folks are discussing it on [that other site](https://www.reddit.com/r/Govee/comments/1egu2f0/smart_tower_fan_2_h7105_connectivity_and_factory/), but since I don't use it, I wanted to post some things here. Hopefully so DDG/Google/Bing can still find useful results. Someone can link Redditors to here if they want: - *Pairing and control (when not responsive):* Any HomeKit pairing and control issues could be because the Govee app **cannot** be open or running at the same time. I have to force quit the Govee app on my phone in order to get it to relinquish control to HomeKit. I hope Govee figures out how to remove this limitation, but I don't use their app so I don't care too much. - *Hard reset instructions:* The Reddit thread (and Govee website!) have it wrong. To reset the device, you have to hold the **Mode and Timer buttons** for 5 seconds. This is mentioned on a little paper insert they included with the fan.
I recently got a touch screen panel, 1280X800, and the screen is on 24/7 (which is fine). The only problem is it's in my peripheral vision when I'm at my desk and it by default cycles through some stock images when not in use. The image changing catches my eye easily, and it's just a little annoying. So I decided to put a single static image on it. Does anyone here have any static image you keep on your wall-mounted displays when they aren't in use, or any ideas for such an image? I was going to fall back on just disabling the image all together and have the actual interface showing, but that's boring. I was thinking of something related to my home, saying like the {surname} household, or maybe a picture of my cats or something funny, I am not sure either way. I figured some of you here might have thought about this already and might have some good suggestions.
Hi, moved to Italy and live south in rurale area where I bought house. I want to setup domotics at home using KNX and Openhab. I can't find decent online shop. UK is not an option as I'll end up paying customs. Anyone can recommend a good shop?
I'm looking for door & window contact sensors and motion sensors to replace an old Simon 3 ADT security system. I've read a lot of posts and such and I'm still having a hard time picking out sensors that will work with an existing Smarthings v2 Hub (currently used for lights) and eventually Home Assistant once life calms down a bit more and I have time to go through all the setup. As I understand it, matter/thread support was added in the v3 hub so I don't have this on my ST v2. I'd like to avoid anything from Amazon and locally functioning sensors are preferred. Can anyone advise on how to pick good devices? There seems to be tons of info out there, but I'm having trouble sifting through it for the info I need. This is a surprise for a family member who has been considering replacing an older system. I'd like to get it in place before they have the chance to buy a crappy, locked down, spyware riddled system from a company like Amazon so that I can be sure everything will transition smoothly to Home Assistant later.
Are there any individuals or services that will build a custom air quality sensor from individual components for a fee? I am mainly interested parties in a couple humidity+temp+co2 boxes (wifi,zigbee,zwave or cable) (Airgradient is prob ideal but too expensive)
So, what I want to do is basically to be able to publish some of my own IR remotes at home to some public database, very probably [IRDB](https://github.com/probonopd/irdb). Of course I'd also be using the device for automations and so on, which I know it works great at that. But my main goal is to make it possible for people to _not_ have to buy a stupid remote for some old hardware they have. From the [docs](https://www.home-assistant.io/integrations/broadlink/#learning-commands), it seems like it is possible. Do you have any experience on this?

Hi there, i recently got 50 NFC tags and these things are amazing for making shortcuts and the like, so i need any ideas and uses you guys already have for these! I currently use one for my Bluetooth headphones to connect, one on my work phone for call forwarding, one for my battery charger to set an alarm and one on my washing machine to set a timer for when it's done. Any ideas are appreciated!
I followed [this video](https://youtu.be/AK5E2T5tWyM) to make my Home Asssistant accessible from everywhere, and yeah, port 8123 is fully clear to me, I've done it, it works great. But he also talks about port 443, and when he sets it up in the router instead of choosing 443 on both WAN and LAN he goes for 443 to 8123. Why? And which one is the WAN and the LAN one? His router config has completely different names to mine, and as you can tell I am quite a noob at this.

Which switches can you recommend? Can you get them in bulk for a cheaper price?
What's the advantage of the zigbees? I can get both bulbs, wifi and zigbee for ~5 bucks. I tried reading a lot of articles/ posts. This is all confusing. Some write zigbee is better with battery because wifi lamps need to stay connected with wifi. But the zigbee lamps need to stay connected with zigbee (however they communicate. must be waves as well) as well, does it consume less power? What's the range of these hubs? Wifi is available everywhere. Do I need multiple hubs? I want to connect them to home assistant, so arguments like zigbee can be better automated should fall short as well, right? I already have one wifi lamp which is automated enough for my taste. What shall I more automate than turn off at x and turn on at y. And I haven't even read properly into zwave or matter. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Hi. I live in a housing cooperative. Am considering a solution for connecting some Doors and booking function to a central hub. What are your experiences there? For example I have a yale doorman that has the possibility to be controlled via a hub. Thankful for tips and recommendations
Any low power security cameras that would recommend with night vision and decent quality? Ideally non-smart without a cloud option as I would like to connect it directly to an offline server with a cable or wifi (although not having a wifi might be better)
I recently bought a portable ice maker, and want to be able to set it to a schedule/make it smart. Unfortunately, it does not power on when plugged in, and the power on is operated by a momentary push button. I'm trying to find a relay that can send a power on/off pulse, with a voltage sensor that can tell if the machine is currently on. It would have to accept a variety of voltage supply, because I don't know exactly what the internals operate on yet. For technology: I don't have zigbee/zwave hub, but am happy to buy one. Currently doing automations through Google Home, and plan to switch to home assistant at some point, so it would need to be compatible with both. I've been looking at some of the Shelly relays (1, uni), but I've seen mixed reviews if they can operate a momentary switch without flashing tasmota, and if they would be able to sense if the machine is on.
So since Blynk have started paywalling more and more controls, and have finally reduced it to just a button and a slider... Does anyone know any alternative apps which do a similar thing? (Use case, I just want some kind of RGB colour space slider to update some lights on an Arduino, without having to pay a subscription for the privilege)
I want to get started with home automation, probably based on a raspberry pi (or as of now with my banana pi which is my home server) and either openHAB or home assistant. My goal is, first, to put some temperature/humidity sensors in varous rooms and leak detector in my basement where I had some issues with the main drain. I wonder if you have some recomendations for a usb dongle for zigbee and/or z-wave compatible with linux, not too expensive but good enough if I want to extend the network later. I read about SONOFF-ZB USB Dongle Plus Zigbee 3.0 available on Chinese websites. What do you think?
I put three DS18B20s on a wire along with three SHT30s on D1 mini shields, all in a cardboard box indoors, for a day.  My conclusion is that the DS18B20s are actually more accurate. My Fluke's thermocouple also agreed with them. The SHT30s all read several degrees higher, with the one that was at an angle reading a little lower than the others which were flat. When I turned them all on edge their temperatures converged a bit lower but still a bit high. I wonder if some of the spikes from their readings are just microcontroller activity. I'm hoping to use the Tasmota [TempOffset command](https://tasmota.github.io/docs/Commands/#sensors) to adjust.
The DS18B20 (on a Feather Huzzah) seems to miss some rapid changes that the SHT30 (on a D1 mini shield) reports, even though TelePeriod=60 for both. The DS18B20 does seem to report changes within 60s of each other sometimes so I think we're just seeing duplicate values elided, which I do expect. The thermostat on the wall near them (which they'll be replacing) reports 70F, closer to the DS18B20. I have a thermocouple for my Fluke multimeter which I may try to calibrate in ice water and then use to calibrate the temp sensors, though I'm curious if there's an easier way; or I might not bother since I care more about just setting the climate for room comfort than specific numeric temperatures. The data path is: Tasmota -> MQTT (Mosquitto) -> HomeAssistant -> InfluxDb. In this case the chart's just in InfluxDb's data explorer, though I have some dashboards in Grafana too (which was the motivation for having Influxdb).
I'm wondering if I can get a device that enables zwave over Ethernet/wifi and connect that to my home assistant setup? Basically I have a home assistant setup in my house. I want to add a few simple things to my parents place but I want it to all be on the same HA instance. On the router in my parents place, I can install wireguard to connect it to my LAN. So now my parents network is the same as my LAN network. I'm looking for a device that can connect to zwave and then send that info over the LAN to my home assistant. Does such a thing exist? Thanks.
Has anyone seen anything in terms of locks that could be used for smaller doors etc. For example, a drawer/cabinet style lock or something that might work for bifold closet doors etc. Also setups that could be used to automatically slide out a drawer. I'd like to create some "secret drawers" as well as be able to lock out stuff like the "candy/snack drawer" as certain members of my household have poor impulse control and like snitch candy then not easy their dinner (Yes I've tried hiding it, putting it up high etc, but they're sneaky and automation is more fun)
Way back at the beginning of my figuring out home automation, I bought a [Animus Heart](https://www.animushome.com/en/). It's ok but it's extremely limited and the UI is terribly sluggish and unwieldy, so I'd like to replace the OS with Home Assistant instead. I have reason (my router recognising it as a such when it crashed) to believe that on the inside it's just a Raspberry Pi with some added bells and whistles. Has anyone tried this? Is this feasible?
By local control, I mean if the Z-wave hub is down will the switch still work as a dumb switch and turn the lights on/off? This is the product I would like to get, but can't find if they allow 'dumb switch' operation. My house doesn't currently have a doorbell of any form (100+ year old house, I guess no one ever installed one along the way), and lately we've been suffering a bit of antisocial behaviour so I've been looking into getting a smart doorbell. Despite both my wife and I being tech literate people the only smart home devices we have are a few smart bulbs which we control through our phones (both Android and Apple). Given that we don't have, and are **not interested in getting a smart speaker or hub**, are there any video doorbells that send meaningful notifications to your phone? So far Google Nest Battery Doorbell looks like it would be the best all rounder for our needs, but it seems that it just sends a regular notification to phone that would be stupidly easy to miss. I also looked into Eufy and found contradicting things about how phone notifications are handled. Ideally I'd want to get a **ringing phone notification** that wakes the phone and displays the camera interface, like a phone call, that way it would get immediatly noticed and not just lost amongst other regular notifications. I can easily set a different notification sound...but that isn't much help as my phone is always set to vibrate mode. It sounds like Ring doorbells have the style of notification I'm looking for, but they seem to have an awful reputation and we'd like to avoid a subscription if possible. Is there anything that fits my admittedly limiting criteria? Thanks in advance for any tips, help, and advice : )
While I quite like the ability to broadcast TTS, media, and other such things to Google Nest or Amazon Alexa devices, I'm trying to rein in my HASS setup so that it doesn't send data to our require cloud services. Does anyone know of or recommend a wireless speaker service that can accept broadcast/streamed/sent audio without needing an internet connection. Bonus if it has a microphone that can integrate with something like a local Genie instance for accepting voice commands (without cloud processing)

Apologies if this is a common question - Lemmy search leaves a little to be desired still. How exactly does a Thread border router talk to edge devices? Do they talk directly, device-to-device or will a border router utilize the 2.4GHz radios in my APs to extend its range?
Wondering if anyone has a security door like this  with a smart lock on it. I feel like I would need to install another smart lock on the inner door, otherwise, it would defeat the convenience of smart locks. Open to any solutions people have
Greetings, internet strangers. I just got a Martin Jerry Tasmota smart switch and would like to connect it to OpenHab or something similar. I have ruled out HomeAssistant because their docker image doesn’t have plugin support and I need to run it on an existing Debian 12 server. I know a little bit about mqtt but not much. If anyone could tell me how or recommend a guide to configuring a Tasmota switch with OpenHab or similar with a mqtt broker that would be great. Thanks. Edit: typo

These came out a while ago in the UK but I've been waiting for them to show up in Canada, looks like the US just got them so hopefully we're not far behind. I like the clean look and the light bars look useful, but of course since they're hue they're $$.
I'm working in the template editor, and if I use the 'and' operator, an entity disappears. I finally found/guessed a working combination but I can't find any examples to see the right combo of operators and parenthesis. HA tells you to look at jinja docs, jinja literally says "There is not an awful lot to talk about here" any template guru out there know the secret sauce?
I have been searching on and off for years with no avail for a simple light switch that turns off after a preset amount of time to install on our closets. I just want a regular ass looking rocker switch, not one with a dozen timer buttons, not one with a motion sensor. I know I could just use a smart switch and have HA turn it off, but I'm waiting for TP-Link to release a Matter ready firmware update before buying more. I guess I could just use a sonoff relay, but I really don't think this particular application should require smart functionality. Anyone know of a switch like what I'm trying to find?
