Have you tried increasing the size of your swap memory in windows? Otherwise known as "virtual memory". Depending on the speed of your drive and available space, you might be able to increase the vertual memory size to get more performance.

But what about using a page archiving service, even a self-hosted one, like Shiori. Shiori has an extension that can allow for single click page archiving right from the browser. The pages are saved as html files or txt files and it will create a readability version of the file which is just the text and images. You could then search the files and their contents using something like VS Code to search the whole directory where the files are stored. There are plenty of other ways to do that search once you have those archives, though. I think even Windows File Search will search the contents of a txt or html file stored on the device.

Shiori also has its own search, which is pretty fast, and searches the contents of the archives as well.

The shine job they did on Biden while he was VP in the Obama years really weathered strong. All that "goofy grampa" shit they wrapped him in, and published all over the place, really solidified Biden as America's Grandad, to the point that some people are still looking at him in the same way you might look at your cooky 80+ year old pops at the family picnic. They gave him this aura of stateliness, like he's the Washington Monument come to life. He's been through it all, seen every face of America, he's the golden boy, the old dog, the tough but fair, the heavy hand but soft heart, the elected official equivalent of a mid-90s Ford Ranger, classic like coca-cola, a cool Budweiser on a hot summer night, Fireflies on the Forth of July, you know all that paper thin Americana draped over the face of death.

This is what makes him so effective, and what gives everyone the license to walk beside him. No doubt in my mind, the level of resistance to the genocide in Gaza would be magnified ten times if Trump was in power now, making all the same moves as Biden is now. It's because libs view Trump as "Fascism Manifest". He is the doomsayer, a harbinger of the Apocalypse, and a "threat to democracy", whatever that means to them. His aura is toxic, and liberal progressives wouldn't be seen collaborating with him because he gives up the game too easily. He wears his class interests on his sleeve. Watching progressives line up behind a pro genocide Donald Trump would be far too much cognitive dissonance for the liberal progressive voters to handle. Watching them line up behind Grandpa Joe, however, well, that's just party unity and liberal progressives hunger for party unity.

I think the American institutions are accelerationist, and anyone you get out of that system as leaders would be accelerationists. The heel sets the stage, reads the crowd, establishes clear red lines and invites the masses to cosplay as resistance fighters standing behind the Face. Once the Face takes the stage, in the afterglow of the resistance's victory, the red lines are moved forward quietly. Without this performance, there is no acceleration to be had. Both the Face and the Heel have a vested interested in the show they put on, and they need each other to keep the show going.

We also have to get away from the Panopticon we've created out of schools. I speak from experience here as a person who manages and implements these systems: You can not walk a hall without being recorded, you can't send an email without it potentially being flagged and sent to administration, you can't browse a website without it being logged and eventually used against you.

Schools have become little state surveillance conditioning centers.

Linked to this is the total lack of critical thought when introducing technology into a students academic life. Computer labs are things of the past. More and more districts are implementing 1:1 programs, which do help with equity but create new problems. Very often there is no guidance on when it's appropriate to use technology as part of the curriculum, and at worst an outright mandate that technology is used at all times to justify the cost.

I've been witness to dozens of cases of kids who are rabidly attached to their devices in an unhealthy way. Often its a symptom of an underlying neurodivergence.

No critical thought or material understating of the implications of requiring device use for K-12 students. No thoughts on if this establishes a bad pattern of device dependency. No critical thoughts on Google or Apple and or the ethics of shuffling students down a pipeline that makes it harder for them to use alternatives, incubating future consumers. No consideration of alternatives, mostly do to lack of manpower required to implement them. Not a single shop equivalent education path that teaches you how computers work, how you might service them, and so on.

I think about this story often:

    https://opensource.com/education/14/9/open-source-benefits?ool

    https://opensource.com/education/16/1/getting-started-in-it-through-a-student-run-help-desk

I wonder what kind of impact it had on even the tech neutral students. What kind of opinions or skills did these students pick up from being participants? What kind of culture did the kids have as a result of getting their needs met by other students? The benefits for the students involved in the helpdesk are obvious, what about the subtle benefits?

Laws like COPPA do more harm then good frankly. Once administration understands the filtering system required to comply with COPPA can also pull logs at any time, its instantly weaponized against students. Often what is filtered comes down to not just the letter of the law but also the individual biases of the staff managing the tech or the administration.

I can't imagine what its like from the perspective of the average student and how it shapes their worldview.

The saying "A Jack of all trades is a master of none." mostly because it implies that there isn't value in a diverse set of skills. My understanding is, however, that the whole saying is "A Jack of all trades is a master of none, but often times better than a master of one." It's unclear why this phrase was shortened, but you can't help but see how its usage in the media lends to the notion that one should specialize instead of generalize. Something that directly supports the higher education structure and track post primary school.

Personally, I've made a pretty successful go at generalizing within my field, so I definitely resonate with this one.

The concept of "Stockholm Syndrome". Britannica defines Stockholm Syndrome as follows:

Stockholm syndrome describes the psychological condition of a victim who identifies with and empathizes with their captor or abuser and their goals. Stockholm syndrome is rare; according to one FBI study, the condition occurs in about 8 percent of hostage victims

This concept is widely excepted as a kind of mental breaking, of someone doing something that would appear illogical or irrational. However, the coining of this notion stems from a bank robbery in Stockholm in 1973. I'll simply link to the backstory from Wikipedia, as it encapsulates the issue pretty well.

Also, we have more evidence of US putting back doors into technology than we do China. If you're living in the imperial core, it's far more likely that the US is monitoring your activities than China is.

I just finished chapter 6 as well and had the same takeaway.

The points he makes about the only difference between a free worker and a slave is the free worker only exchanges a portion of their labor-power is I think very important.

It exposes the goal and endgame of the buyer of labor-power. To own a persons labor-power in its totality is to own them, and by extension own the process of producing labor-power. This includes all the commodities involved in housing, subsistence, education, and medical care.

The value of labor-power is dictated currently by the collective actions of the proletariat in the commody market. However it you had full control over a persons labor-power, you can control what kind of housing, food, medical care, and education they get.

In the absence of totally owning their labor-power, capitalists attempted to instead attack this problem externally by owning the towns the workers lived in. This is WHY company towns existed, becuase slavery was generally outlawed.

Its why we have for profit prison systems. They are effectively the peak of capitalist external intervention in the process of owning labor-power in its totality.

At its core the struggle has always been pure freedom against pure slavery.

It really has me thinking about all kinds of stuff honestly. Back in the day I was a huge Magic The Gathering player, and these early chapters had me thinking about MTGs secondary market and how sets and rotations impacted the value of any given card. Had me thinking about Pucatrade and its closure. The points system, which was supposed to be the money in its trade economy became wildly inflated as time went on. Really interesting reddit thread where people discuss its failings.

I also love to DM dnd/ttrpgs and these early chapters also had me thinking about the class relations and economic relations of D&D. I think a lot of people fall back on our familiarity with our time and places understanding of economy and try to shoehorn those ideas into a vaguely feudal setting. Not a lot of thought goes into how a given "small village with a tavern" stays afloat, and all transactions with in that space are effectively money transactions. However, it's way more likely that someone trades their labor for a nights stay and a hot meal then some coin. Or the tavern owner need the labor and is willing to provide room and a meal in exchange.

Along those lines it begs some questions. What is the economic relations of a civilization of dwarfs whose lifespan can be nearly 400 years+? Would they even value gold in the same way a human civilization does? Would they even have an economy based on commodity exchange? if not what does that look like and how does it shape their social relations? How does that impact their diplomatic relations?

Its all a lot to chew on, and makes me excited for the rest of the book.

But concepts like Imperialism and its relationship to capitalism is some how beyond him. No one (save for one person in our group) would be bothered to read a book on the subject. Like, the MIC comes from somewhere, if it pisses you off so much, wouldn't you want to understand it, so you can combat it? /rant

    Let's all become republicans.

These are loose, unserious thoughts * I feel like local republicans are a dime a dozen, and if you're in a democrat dominated area, you might get a position based on rules. In my area you can't have a true majority, only a 2/3rds majority. So that means there are always seats that go to Republicans, even though they get like 1/2 the vote. * Even if it only works once, you get like 2ish years to fuck with republicans all you want, undermining all their goals. * Some positions run unopposed and just get filled. * You can use your advanced online degree in Hogology to blend right in. All it takes is a trip to the local Carhartt store for the right garb. * If enough of you band together, you can probably out maneuver the command structure of your local party and start running your people for local positions. I have no idea what I'm talking about, really. Consider this the ultimate bit, the bit to end all bits. Infiltrate the party from the ground level, outnumber the local leadership, and shrink the Overton window just a smidgen. Nah, this is probably a dumb idea. Anyway, happy Friday!

Chuds on Facebook make me laugh.

Some dipshit who was on our Town Council tried to tell me that Fascism is a "Left-Wing Construct". These guys are laughable. This was because I told him his fetish for wanting the pledge said before council meetings was a fascist purity test. Our town is pretty progressive, but we still have our hogs about. Was getting tired of seeing them post with impunity on the timeline. I think I might have given some people the courage to also pile on as well, because I've noticed some more aggressive counter talk from people on the page when these idiots slither out of their nest.

For many im sure this isnt much, but I have not finished a book in decades

The amount of times I would read a paragraph and think "if this was written today, it would still be true" was to damn high. Especially the entire last chapter.

    Reading Speed and Comprehension

(cross posting as this seems the more appropriate place) cross-posted from: https://lemmygrad.ml/post/3198573 > I have ADHD, I think it's possible I had some other form of reading disability when I was younger, but I'm not sure. Just a hunch, my therapist has. One thing I do all the time, that really slows me down, is subvocalizing. If I'm not subvocalizing, I feel like my retention and comprehension are almost nonexistent. For easier literature, it's not a big deal, but wanting to read more theory, I find myself struggling. > > I think, according to some reading tests I was taking today, I read at about 144 wpm which isn't great. That's me mostly subvocalizing. If I stop, I can get to 270, but my retention and comprehension goes down quite a bit. > > Any advice, tools, websites, services, you might be aware of that can help me unlearn a lifetime of bad reading habits? Everyone wants to sell you a tool or service for STEM shit, but when you're looking for adult assistance with reading, all I seem to be finding is stuff for Elementary and Middle School level reading.

    Chinese Police in America/UK

I'm going to do my own digging but I know some of us recall the details: The Chinese police in NYC is a fake story, right?

[ADHD] "You eat so slow..." Anyone else get this?

Maybe it's just me, but apparently I'm a "slow" eater. I know my meds suppress my apatite but I still feel like I eat a normal pace. Anyone else?

What do we know about Colorado's war on the homeless?

The holiday debates have begone. "Only two people signed up for this tiny home program. The rest said they like being homeless." I have the logic, but not living in Colorado, I don't have the facts. I do know they're playing a game of shuffle board with their homeless population after some quick investigation, but nothing specific to the claim. I'll get the article in reference if I can. But man, how hard is it to accept that no one "wants" to be homeless. [This doesn't make it sound like Denver isn't doing its best.](https://coloradosun.com/2023/12/11/johnston-homeless-opinion-zornio/)

Relay Phone Number and OTP codes

Facebook (I know) is forcing me to revive a code via a phone number to "prove I'm real". I figured this would be a good usecase for relay phone numbrrs, but thus far I haven't revived any codes after many attempts. Anyone else experience this?

    Leftist kids books.

I was at the library with the kiddo this weekend hunting for some stories. They're 3, for context. I'm not usually the one getting books, and it took me a little time to find books I was interest in. Found two that turned out to be fun and with some leftist points of view. First one: ["Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type" by Doreen Cronin illustrated by Betsy Lewin.](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/766955) A book about cows who have a typewriter. They use that typewriter to write letters to the farmer demanding better working conditions. Its a silly book about cows on strike, light hearted but a good message about the power of collective action. Second one: ["The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet!" By Carmen Agra Deedy, illustrated by Eugene Yelchin](https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/30652384). A book about a noisy town where the people sing all day and night. After electing a new mayor, the mayor bans all forms of singing. Until a rooster arrives. Even after the mayor takes away everything the rooster has, the rooster refuses to stop singing. A fun book about speaking truth to power and refusing to be silenced in the face of powerful threats. In a sea of identity affirming books, it was nice to find these. If you have any similar books feel free to leave them below.

    "Hamas doesn't want a ceasefire!"

This phrase rings like a bell in my circles every time the topic of humanitarian ceasefire comes up, and it effectively stonewalls the conversation. Just a point of frustration that I have no real place to ventilate. Other bangers include: * Israel can't trust the Palestinians, they've never been given a reason to do so. * Hamas wants to make Israel not exist. * So you equate Israel now to Nazis during WW2? (while talking about the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising) * Hamas takes drugs and ... ::: spoiler spoiler rapes corpses of women and children. ::: Hard to be interested in engaging after reading that last one, but no one else is going to bring the missing half of the conversation.
