It wasn’t that bad

I was expecting it to deviate from the Cold War satire of season 3 because they continued having the Soviets as a baddie, but they turned out to be the least sinister problem. I enjoyed the contrast between Will and Mike’s distant and faltering relationship with Dustin and Steve’s healthy and loving friendship, but I did wish they did a little more with the latter two. Joyce and Robin are cuties, as usual. For the most part, I liked how almost everyone had important tasks that contributed to the overall goal. Even when Mike’s crew or Joyce’s crew didn’t get screen time for a long time, I’m still reminded that their jobs are crucial. I wish they had done a little more with Yuri and the prison guard. Overall, it was alright. If they ever make a season 6, which they probably will because it’s a lucrative franchise, I hope they return to season 1’s conspiracy thriller vibe. Particularly, going back to the 60s and exploring the start of MKULTRA and Paperclip scientists, California cults that dabbled in LSD, and the CIA and FBI meddling of the Black Panthers. It would be funny to see Panthers using Maoist tactics to defeat the monsters.

I hated Legendary Pictures Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) so much that I didn't even bother watching any of the other "Monsterverse" movies after that.

Usually I will eat up giant monster movie slop, no matter how bad. You're talking to someone who adores even the badly dubbed English version of Godzilla vs The Smog Monster (Hedora). I wasn't too impressed with 2014s American Godzilla, but it got a pass from me for at least trying to understand the anti-nuclear message. Hated the pro-US military stuff tho. But holy shit, Godzilla KoTM was hot garbage. Which is surprising because it had all the ingredients to be great, it had Ghidorah, Rodan and Mothra, all with fantastic redesigns. However the story was just bad, not the fun kind of bad, bad to the point that was hard to sit through. Never before have I seen the idea of Godzilla so missunderstood. Godzilla as a concept is famous for being an allegory of nuclear weapons and a warning that using destructive technology can have unforseen repercussions. When Godzilla is the bad guy, he's a stand in for nature's wrath at man for daring to use something as perverse as nukes. When he's the good guy, it's usually to protect the Earth from anything from aliens to pollution. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, they make ecoterrorists the bad guys and a nuke saves the day. I'm not even joking. They nuke Godzilla to revive him so he can protect them from King Ghidorah. Oh, and the only Japanese character sacrifices himself to the nuke to make it happen. It's not saying anything important like an allegory Godzilla movie, nor is it goofy and fun enough to be a cheesy slop monster fight movie. Thank god for Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One. So yeah, I've never watched Godzilla vs Kong or the newest one. Are they any good? They look pretty bad, but I want to know if I'm missing out on good slop.

Sunday Kino Night, 8PM EST: Hideaki Anno’s surreal romance Ritual (2000) and John Ford’s Wyatt Earp western My Darling Clementine (1946)! (CWs inside)

IMPORTANT NOTE: please use a VPN whenever visiting Hextube, or anywhere else on the internet, for that matter. Protect your privacy. For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is Ritual (2000), the best-known and best-reviewed of Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno’s live-action films. It centers on the attempts of an amateur filmmaker to connect with a teenage girl who he spots wandering the streets and muttering the same phrase every day. Romance ensues, along with Anno’s signature monologues on existentialism and so on. Looks pretty neat, so let’s check it out. Currently ranked #224 on Letterboxd’s [Top 250 films of all time]( https://letterboxd.com/dave/list/official-top-250-narrative-feature-films/page/3/). Next is My Darling Clementine (1946), a classic Western from the maestro himself, John Ford, whose work has never been shown on Hextube, until now. It is one of the many retellings of the story of real-life Old West lawman Wyatt Earp (here played by Henry Fonda) and the lead-up to the famous shootout at the OK Corral in Tombstone, Arizona. Considered one of Ford’s best films and one of the best Westerns ever. We’ll start at 8PM EST on Hextube, right here: https://live.hexbear.net/c/movies Be there, comrades! # Letterboxd: - Ritual: https://letterboxd.com/film/ritual-2000/ - My Darling Clementine: https://letterboxd.com/film/my-darling-clementine/ # Doesthedogdie.com links: - Ritual: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0269856/parentalguide/?ref_=tt_ql_stry_4 - My Darling Clementine: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0269856/parentalguide/?ref_=tt_ql_stry_4 # CWs for Ritual: - Nudity. - Sex. - Smoking. - Alcohol. - Panic attacks. - Hallucinations. - Depression. - Suicidal ideation. # CWs for My Darling Clementine: - Gun violence. - Kissing. - Smoking. - Alcohol. # Links to movies: - Ritual: https://tankie.tube/w/joRg9wSt3sfNPTjUwDFmVb - My Darling Clementine: https://tankie.tube/w/nqgMKZ1aTja4P168pZGaAa

Oh boy, now the 7 Dwarves are getting a "horror" treatment. Other things can be done with public domain, too. Right? RIGHT? www.joblo.com

>Putting a horror twist on popular children’s story characters who are in the public domain has become a popular trend these days. Multiple Mickey Mouse horror films are making their way out into the world since the earliest Mickey cartoons are now public domain, filmmakers are working on horror versions of Goldilocks, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella, and a whole cinematic universe is being built out of horror movies based on the likes of Winnie the Pooh, Bambi, Peter Pan, and others. Another project in this line-up of films designed to tarnish the reputation of childhood favorites is The 7 Dwarves, which puts a terrifying twist on the story of Snow White and is scheduled for release in March of 2025. >Promising a spine-chilling ride that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats, The 7 Dwarves has the following synopsis: In The 7 Dwarves, Snow White narrowly escapes the clutches of the evil witch, only to find herself lost in the eerie depths of the dark forest. But her nightmare is far from over. She soon becomes the prey of a sadistic group of dwarves (Cranky, Jolly, Drowsy, Meek, Snuffy, Wheezy, Chief, and Ditzy). Far from being her protectors, these sadistic dwarves hunt her relentlessly, forcing Snow White to fight for survival. As she outwits and eliminates each dwarf one by one, the tension rises to a blood-soaked climax in this spine-chilling horror reimagining. >Colin Patrick Ryan is directing the film from a script by producer Chris Hoyt and executive producer Galen Christy. A press release notes, “Combining suspense, horror, and a reimagined take on a familiar tale, The 7 Dwarves promises to captivate horror fans and fairytale enthusiasts alike.” Christy adds, “We’re thrilled to bring audiences a bold, new vision of Snow White like they’ve never seen before. By turning this beloved tale into a nightmarish survival story, fans of the original will be captivated by the unexpected twists and turns that horror lovers will be talking about for years to come!“ The real horror for me is how lazy, formulaic, and pandering this slop sounds like already. ![debord-tired](https://www.hexbear.net/pictrs/image/3bc736dc-1b61-4129-8009-a5fe1e6ecf18.png "emoji debord-tired") Snow White getting a horror gimmick isn't even new. ![](https://hexbear.net/pictrs/image/9d2e83a3-d529-4356-9541-05feee2728c1.jpeg)

Friday Movie Night, 8PM EST: Chinese anti-bullying thriller Better Days (2019) and Fritz Lang’s hardboiled film-noir The Big Heat (1953)! (CWs inside)

IMPORTANT NOTE: please use a VPN whenever visiting Hextube, or anywhere else on the internet, for that matter. Protect your privacy. For this Friday Movie Night, first up is Better Days (2019), a Chinese thriller about a bullied schoolgirl who enlists the aid of a bodyguard with a mysterious past to ward off her assailants. Meanwhile, she tries to pass her final exams, and uh oh, what’s this? Could romance be blossoming? I guess we’ll find out. One of the highest-rated Chinese films on Letterboxd, and by the best-known and best-reviewed work to date of director Derek Tsang. After that, since Fury (1936) was a hit last night, we will delve again into the filmography of renowned director Fritz Lang, with The Big Heat (1953), another highly-regarded entry in his Hollywood phase. A classic film-noir, it follows the one good cop in a corrupt police force as he tries to take down a sadistic mob boss, as revenge for the suicide of his friend. A whole lot of shooting and other bloodshed ensues, to a greater extent than pretty much any movie that preceded it. This is considered one of the best crime films of the 1950s, so let’s check it out. Peter Cushing’s Star Wars resurrection at centre of legal battle; Disney has been sued for using Peter Cushing's likeness in #RogueOne web.archive.org

>Peter Cushing’s resurrection 22 years after his death for the spin-off film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is at the centre of a legal battle over control of his image. >Special effects were used to digitally recreate Cushing’s character, Grand Moff Tarkin, from the original Star Wars film. >The makers of Rogue One are being sued by a film producer who was one of Cushing’s oldest friends. Kevin Francis claims the actor agreed not to grant permission for anyone to reproduce his appearance through special effects without his authorisation. >The Disney group, which made Rogue One, failed on Monday to have Francis’s claim for “unjust enrichment” dismissed at the High Court in London. Cushing died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 81. Special effects were used to recreate his appearance with the British actor, Guy Henry, 63, performing as his body double. >Francis’ company, Tyburn Film Productions, is suing the Disney subsidiary Lucasfilm, which owns the rights to Star Wars, and Lunak Heavy Industries (UK), the producer of Rogue One. He also brought claims against the executors of Cushing’s estate, who have both died, and Associated International Management, the agency that represented Cushing until his death. Cant to see the future corporate wars over who owns the rights to Keanu Reeves likeness

The X-Files - New General Megathread for the 9th-10th of September 2024

The X-Files is an American science fiction drama television series created by Chris Carter. The original television series aired from September 10th 1993 to May 19th 2002 on Fox. During its original run, the program spanned nine seasons, with 202 episodes. A short tenth season consisting of six episodes ran from January to February 2016. Following the ratings success of this revival, The X-Files returned for an eleventh season of ten episodes, which ran from January to March 2018. In addition to the television series, two feature films have been released: The 1998 film The X-Files and the stand-alone film The X-Files: I Want to Believe, released in 2008, six years after the original television run ended. The series revolves around Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson), who investigate the eponymous "X-Files": marginalized, unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. Mulder is a skilled criminal profiler, an ardent supernaturalist, and a conspiracy theorist who believes in the existence of the paranormal, whereas Scully is a medical doctor and skeptic who has been assigned to scientifically analyze Mulder's case files. Early in the series, both agents apparently become pawns in a much larger conflict and so come to trust only each other and a few select people. The agents discover what appears to be a governmental agenda to hide positive proof of the existence of extraterrestrial life. Mulder and Scully's shared adventures initially lead them to develop a close platonic bond, which by series' end develops into a complex romantic relationship. Roughly one third of the series' episodes follow a complicated mythopoeia-driven story arc about a planned alien invasion, whereas the other two-thirds may be described as "monster of the week" episodes that focus on a singular villain, mutant, or monster. The X-Files was inspired by earlier television series featuring elements of suspense, horror, and speculative science fiction, including The Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Tales from the Darkside, Twin Peaks, and especially Kolchak: The Night Stalker. When creating the main characters, Carter sought to reverse gender stereotypes by making Mulder a believer and Scully a skeptic. The first seven seasons featured Duchovny and Anderson relatively equally. In the eighth and ninth seasons, Anderson took precedence while Duchovny appeared intermittently. New main characters were introduced: FBI Special Agents John Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Monica Reyes (Annabeth Gish), among others. Mulder and Scully's immediate superior, Assistant Director Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi), began to appear regularly. The first five seasons of The X-Files were filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, before production eventually moved to Los Angeles, apparently to accommodate Duchovny's schedule. However, the series later returned to Vancouver with the filming of The X-Files: I Want to Believe as well as the tenth and eleventh seasons. The X-Files was a hit for the Fox network and received largely positive reviews, although its long-term story arc was criticized near the conclusion. Initially considered a cult series, it turned into a pop culture touchstone that tapped into public mistrust of governments and large institutions and embraced conspiracy theories and spirituality. Both the series itself and lead actors Duchovny and Anderson received multiple awards and nominations, and by its conclusion the show was the longest-running science fiction series in U.S. television history. The series also spawned a franchise that includes Millennium and The Lone Gunmen spin-offs, two theatrical films, and accompanying merchandise. Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST: Gaspar Noe’s druggie dance-party nightmare Climax (2018) and Fritz Lang’s crime drama Fury (1936)! Bonus: The Private Life of a Cat (1947)! (CWs inside)

IMPORTANT NOTE: please use a VPN whenever visiting Hextube, or anywhere else on the internet, for that matter. Protect your privacy. For this Special Thursday Cinema Night, 8PM EST, there’s no special theme, just two more good flicks. First up is Climax (2018), which centers on the worst party ever, a French dance-rave that turns into a nightmare after everyone’s drinks are spiked with LSD. A whole lot of drug-addled revelry and excess follows while some of the partiers try to find the culprit. Oh, and did I mention there’s dancing? Director is French auteur Gaspar Noe, whose films we have not watched yet, but he is a good buddy of Harmony Korine, whose Gummo (1997) was a hit on Hextube. After that is Fury (1936), a crime drama from renowned director Fritz Lang, the guy behind Metropolis (1927) and M (1931). In this, the most-acclaimed film of his Hollywood phase, a man (Spencr Tracy) goes to visit his girlfriend in a small town, at which point he is arrested and accused of being a fugitive kidnapper. Drama ensues as he tries to secure justice and avoid being lynched by the irate townspeople. BONUS: We will also watch the 22-minute short The Private Life of a Cat (1947), an up-close-and-personal look at a cat’s birth and upbringing from avant-garde duo Alexander Hammid and Maya Deren. It looks adorable. Looks like we are seeing Fumble of the decade nerds: Sony reportedly scrapped most of the work that was finished on ‘SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE’ due to creative reasons.

[tweet link](https://x.com/HollywoodHandle/status/1833310881741975597) >If Beyond the Spider-Verse was hitting theaters next summer, we would’ve heard about it by now, as Sony would’ve assigned it a release date. >2026 seems perfectly doable, but I’m told that it would be extremely unlikely that Sony would want to release an animated Spider-Man movie and a live-action Spider-Man movie in the same calendar year, as the studio is better off staggering those two franchises. >So not only is 2027 more likely for that reason alone, but over Labor Day Weekend, I heard that Sony scrapped most of Beyond the Spider-Verse for creative reasons, and because of that decision, the movie would be unlikely to debut before 2027 given the detailed animation it requires. >While the Beyond the Spider-Verse team was taken aback by the change in direction, I’m told they’re relieved to have more time to work on the sequel, as it’s important to all involved that they stick the landing on this Oscar-winning franchise. i wouldnt fully blame sony for this if you remember that the directors had the worst working conditions >[Spider-Verse Artists Say Working on the Sequel Was "Death by a Thousand Paper Cuts"](https://hexbear.net/post/274561)

For this special 9/11 Super Slop Night, 8PM EST, it’s Project A-ko 5 & 6 (1990) and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023)! Bonus short film: The Red Balloon (1956)! (CWs inside)

For this 9/11 edition of Super Slop Night, by popular demand, it’s the long-awaited screening of the fifth and six Project A-ko movies, the final entries in the series, which transplant the characters into a completely new setting and otherwise have nothing to do with the previous installments. They’re still fun. After that is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (2023), the latest version of the neverending franchise. It follows a quartet of four anthropomorphic turtle brothers who emerge from the sewers of New York City at 15 years old and interact with humans for the first time. Also, they fight stuff. This is animated in a style similar to Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse (2018) and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022). Many are calling it the best version of TMNT ever. I guess we’ll find out. It is the debut feature of director Jeff Rowe, who was previously a writer for The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021). BONUS: we will also watch The Red Balloon (1956), a short film about a French boy searching for his beloved balloon on the streets of Paris. It is widely considered one of the best short films of all time, even winning the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. It is the only film of note by director Albert Lamorisse, who is better-known as the creator of the board game Risk. Small world.
