I haven't really followed the leadership at all, nor have I always agreed with the anti-Mozilla stuff I see annoyingly often on Lemmy. So to be clear, I wasn't agreeing with the linked post, just giving my interpretation of their intended meaning.

I appreciate the added context you gave. I don't think I'll ever understand how a website full of so many people who love free software can be one of the most anti-Firefox places I've encountered on the internet. It often feels disingenuous or astroturfed.

I read it not as sarcastic, but as carrying an implication that the Firefox leadership is intentionally tanking the browser - that their conscious active goal is to sink the ship, and that the drop is a result of malevolence rather than incompetence. And I suppose that would imply the person in the image believes Mozilla is being run by people who don't want the browser to succeed.

Not so sure it's correct to say he's already in the "lame duck" phase the article mentions where most presidents stuff their clemency grants. It might be true in a literal sense, but public perception is presumably the main reason presidents wait until that period for this sort of thing, and I'm sure he's still very conscious of how his own PR could affect Harris's campaign.

I've gotta wonder if the charge is being pushed by someone who opposes the law being talked about in the video, who wants its first application to be in a case so ridiculous it'll create mass public opposition to it or something. That's the only scenario I can think of where an otherwise functioning adult may make a decision that poor.

Florida is already a swing state and has been for ages. 2 of the last 4 elections it went blue.

It wasn't a freak accident either. There's no sane way to look at the last 70 years of presidential elections in Florida and determine it's been a safe long-term bet for either party in that timeframe. It usually votes for the winner, but when it hasn't, that loser has always (in modern times) been a Republican - so the state is at least much more electorally important to them than it is to Democrats. It's very much always been a leans-Republican swing state.

Could be that for sure - like I game a bit every day, but if I was doing this same project, all of my screenshots from the past three weeks would have been from Crash Bandicoot 4 - and the three weeks before that would all be from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2. I basically just beat a level a day. If other people were chiming in every day maybe I'd mix it up.

It could also be self-selection bias - like, I would never do a project like this because I know it would be super repetitive. Maybe they were willing to do it because they already played a hyper-varied selection?

Is every other message there something you typed? Or is it arguing with itself? Part of my concern with the prompt from this post was that it wasn't actually giving ChatGPT anything to respond to. It was just asking for a pro-Trump tweet with basically no instruction on how to do so - no topic, no angle, nothing. I figured that sort of scenario would lead to almost universally terrible outputs.

I did just try it out myself though. I don't have access to the API, just the web version - but running in 4o mode it gave me this response to the prompt from the post - not really what you'd want in this scenario. I then immediately gave it this prompt (rest of the response here). Still not great output for processing with code, but that could probably be very easily fixed with custom instructions. Those tweets are actually much better quality than I expected.

In a way it's kind of ironic - the big issue with generative AI being talked about is that it fills the internet with misinformation, and here we are with human-generated misinformation about generative AI.

Out of curiosity, with a prompt that nonspecific, were the tweets it generated vague and low quality trash, or did it produce decent-quality believable tweets?

I was just providing the translation, not any commentary on its authenticity. I do recognize that it would be completely trivial to fake this though. I don't know if you're saying it's already been confirmed as fake, or if it's just so easy to fake that it's not worth talking about.

I don't think the prompt itself is an issue though. Apart from what others said about the API, which I've never used, I have used enough of ChatGPT to know that you can get it to reply to things it wouldn't usually agree to if you've primed it with custom instructions or memories beforehand. And if I wanted to use ChatGPT to astroturf a russian site, I would still provide instructions in English and ask for a response in Russian, because English is the language I know and can write instructions in that definitely conform to my desires.

What I'd consider the weakest part is how nonspecific the prompt is. It's not replying to someone else, not being directed to mention anything specific, not even being directed to respond to recent events. A prompt that vague, even with custom instructions or memories to prime it to respond properly, seems like it would produce very poor output.

I would like Freetube 100x more if it had a web UI instead of a non-browser interface. A web UI with a companion extension to automatically redirect YT video links to it could be so seamless.

If it's hosting a server on the local network that would also provide a perfect solution to not having any way for view history or settings to automatically sync between different devices.

The 15th season didn't include any of the original cast. Not even Adam and Jamie.

I think the other reply to you may be talking about previous seasons, after the build team left, but that's not the season that's being marked as last in the image. I'm a bit iffy on how the seasons are numbered, but I believe the build team was gone for seasons 13 and 14 with just Adam and Jamie hosting, then season 15, the final one, was the one with two completely new hosts.

The worst part is that I know the menu calories aren't precise at most restaurants, but I still won't let myself be wishy-washy with them. I actively recognize there's no point in relying on how many calories Outback Steakhouse says are in a Bloomin' Onion (1900 btw) when the largest bloomin' onion I've had in the past is close to double the size of the smallest I've had. But my entire system relies on precise tracking so I still feel I have to make the effort.

Rounding up to the full amount after eating >85% or so is something I do though. I'm much more okay with it if I know I'm overestimating than if I think I might possibly be underestimating.

While that's true, and while it's something I'd definitely recommend for others, I can't honestly say that's something I've mastered doing myself. To me, not finishing just means I have more work to do when it comes to figuring out how many calories I actually ate. While I could just guesstimate that I had 60% of that blizzard, I find that in practice I'm really not okay with being that wishy-washy with the numbers. The days where I have to just guesstimate kill me inside.

And this situation with the blizzard is something I've dealt with. I had a mostly finished blizzard but couldn't finish it. I had to mark the level of ice cream still remaining, empty the cup, then get weight measurements for the empty cup (c), cup full of water (f), and cup full of water up to the level of remaining ice cream (w) - at which point the total calories eaten were (w-c)/(f-c) * B, where B is the number of calories in the full blizzard. If I could have avoided all of that by finishing the last 28% of that blizzard, you bet I would have.

    My own advice:

The diet I'm on, which has lost me 36 pounds (196 to 160) and counting since early April, is simple calorie restriction - I try my best not to go over 1500 calories/day, and if I do go over, I try to make up for it by going under on following days until things average out.

Every time I've tried this diet or similar diets, I've had great success, as long as I've meticulously tracked and wrote down how many calories I ate each day. The times I've tried this diet without tracking have all ended up failing, even when I "tried" sticking to it for months. The moment I start writing numbers down, things just fall into place. So for me at least, that's the key.

    Some notes:

    • Over the last 127 days my actual average calories/day has been 1472/day
    • I try to avoid meals where counting is very difficult or impractical. That means I try to avoid going to restaurants that don't post calories and I'm not big on "real" cooking. If I do have a meal where a good count isn't possible I try my best to overestimate - usually with 2500 or 3000 depending on how full I am since it's really hard to eat more than that at once. I find it very difficult to go to most restaurants without getting more than 1500 calories, also, so I don't eat at restaurants all that often anymore. Fast food places like McDonald's are actually some of the easier options to work with, though.
    • I've made little to no effort to eat healthier - just less. I can have a blizzard from Dairy Queen if I want, but that's 1100 calories and then I've only got 400 left for something else. I have mastered making delicious ice cream that's just 300 calories/pint though. In practice I usually eat processed foods from a can, box, or bag that you just need to heat up or follow the instructions on the box for.
    • A scale is essential for getting accurate calories out of things like butter, milk, ketchup, ice cream ingredients, etc.
    • In general meats are a pretty poor choice - compared to other foods they make me a lot less full compared to how many calories they take up. I can eat 8 hotdogs (without buns) and fill up my daily calories in that one meal, and still be hungry - or I can have two cans of spaghettios (580 calories total), and be so full I almost can't finish.
    • For me at least, after the first week or so I just stop feeling hungry in general most of the time. There are occasionally days where I only eat because I know I should, rather than because I got hungry.
    • When I'm on this diet, I basically never get heartburn, even after a day where I eat something that would usually have given it to me badly - probably the nicest part of all this.
    • Despite what the post says, I eat basically no fruits or vegetables in my day-to-day life.
    • In the past, I've incorporated extremely heavy daily exercise into my routine as well - I'm talking multiple hours a day, every day, for at least two months. While it did have some noticeable benefits like a very noticeably lower resting heart rate and increased strength, it had basically no visible effect on my rate of weight loss - looking at the graph, you couldn't even tell which portions of the diet were subject to heavy exercise vs. heavy leisure. The lesson learned is that diet is far, far more important than exercise - you can offset an entire workout with a single cookie.
    • When I'm not making any dieting attempts at all, I'm a huge glutton. I've never gotten over 200 pounds, because any time I get close I start doing this diet - but if I ate the way I wanted to all the time, I could easily weigh 350+ pounds. I can very easily eat single 1200-2000 calorie meals multiple times a day. I've yo-yo'd a lot in the past few years but I'm hoping to more or less keep things permanently under control this time - once I get to 140ish I plan to raise my daily calorie allowance to the point where I maintain, rather than gain or lose, over time.

An added bonus of writing things down is getting to graph things too!

Note that I'm not claiming this is healthy. Just effective. Anyone can lose weight eating nothing but chocolate cake, as long as they eat sufficiently little. It doesn't mean you won't die from it.

    Bounding a function

Consider the function defined by y = x\^(sin(x)\^sin(x)). [Observe](https://www.desmos.com/calculator/mczhlgyfau) its graph. Find an increasing function which passes through each of its local maximums, and another increasing function which passes through each of its local minimums. Extra credit: You'll notice the graph isn't drawn for x-values which make sin(x) negative. This is because most of those values make the function undefined - though it is defined for infinitely many points in those intervals, it just also has infinitely many holes. Since it lacks continuity here, it has no true local maxes or local mins, and doesn't impact the original problem. We can nonetheless cheat and fill in the holes by expanding the function to these regions with [y = x\^|sin(x)|\^sin(x)](https://www.desmos.com/calculator/kvmyhygpfp) (Using x\^-|sin(x)|\^sin(x) should also be technically valid, but is being ignored because it's discontinuous with the rest of the graph and not as pretty, but will be mentioned in my solution). Doing so adds more local maxes and local mins. The new local mins should line up with your function that finds the local maxes for the original function - but, find a new function which hits all of the new local maxes.

What is the area of the shaded region?

An 8x5 rectangle. If the bottom left corner is considered (0, 0), then two lines are drawn within the rectangle, from (0, 4) to (8, 1) and from (1, 5) to (7, 0). The smaller two regions of the four these lines cut the rectangle into are shaded. What is their combined area?

    Find a+b

![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/f11cca27-0ebc-45cb-b153-24230d76a574.png) The image is of a large unit square with five smaller disjoint shaded squares contained entirely within it. The five smaller squares are congruent. Four of them are at each corner of the large square. The fifth is in the center, rotated diagonally, so the center of each of its sides is touched by the vertex from one of the other four squares. You are given that the common length for the five smaller congruent squares is (a-sqrt(2)) / b, where a and b are positive integers. What is the value of a + b?

What are the practical effects of the recent court ruling nullifying Musk's Tesla pay package?

I read [this](https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/01/elon-musks-56-billion-pay-plan-voided-as-shareholders-beat-tesla-in-court/) article and still walked away feeling like I didn't understand the situation that well. Is it $56 billion that he's already been paid, and he needs to return it? $56 billion he's partially been paid, and he can keep what he has, but won't get the rest? Something more complicated?

    U.S. Presidents https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/201216280

Sharing an Anki deck I made for learning the US presidents. I've always been mediocre at best when it came to remembering them, but in about a week with this deck I can now list them all, in order, including their years in office. Card fronts will display either their order, name, or their years in office. Card backs will display all of that, in addition to their official white house portrait, political party, vice president(s), and the president who preceded and succeeded them. Also includes a note for presidents who died in office, detailing how they died. When using the deck I study it by attempting to remember both of the missing pieces of information from the front of the card. I put a fair amount of effort into trying to get the cards to look nice as well, and in particular trying to get elements of the card to stay in place when swapping between front and back - I don't like when things jump around. I might share other decks in the future. I have decks I made for US/Canadian/Australian state/province/territory locations and capitals, but for all three of those I used maps from decks other people made, so I'm not sure on the etiquette of sharing something like that. I did make a chemical element deck from scratch that I'm pretty proud of and will probably share at some point, though - I'm just not sure if I'm done tinkering with it yet. I'm pretty new to Anki but have enjoyed learning how to create nice decks. If you download this and find any sort of issues or bugs, please let me know.

In autohotkey, can you daisy chain together hotstrings from different scripts?

Note that I'm using autohotkey v2, not v1. I want to run two different autohotkey scripts. I want to trigger a hotstring in the first script, the output of which ends up being part of the hotstring trigger for the second script. Is this possible? Here's a simplified version of my intended workflow. Script 1: ``` #Hotstring EndChars \ #Hotstring o #Hotstring ? ::iv::ǐ ::av::ǎ ``` Script 2: ``` #Hotstring EndChars \ #Hotstring o #Hotstring ? ::nǐ::你 ::hǎo::好 ``` So the idea is that I can type niv\ and the first script will convert it to nǐ - then I can immediately type \ and the second script will convert it to 你. So I type niv\\\ and my text goes from niv to nǐ to 你. I can then type hav\o\ and have my text go: h, ha, hav, hǎ, hǎo, 好. So I can do niv\ hav\o and get nǐ hǎo, or I can do niv\\\ hav\o\ and get 你 好. Both writing systems in a reasonably simple format. There are reasons I want to set it up like this. The first script has dozens of functions beyond writing in pinyin/chinese, and I share it with another person - so I don't want to add potentially hundreds of random Chinese hotstrings to it, just the special pinyin characters. That's why I'm using two scripts. But I also realize I could just make "niv" and "havo" their own hotstrings which go directly to 你 and 好 without the intermediate nǐ and hǎo. I don't want to do this mostly because I think the system I have in mind is prettier - type it correctly in pinyin first, then have it correctly convert to Chinese. All of that aside: I've gathered that this is probably possible using some combination of SendLevel and #InputLevel - but I've tried a bunch of different combinations and ideas with it, and haven't successfully had one script trigger another yet. Even in simplified toy scripts, which is a little discouraging. Ideally I'd be able to do this with as few changes to the main script I share with another person as possible - the script that handles the Chinese can be as complicated as it needs to be though. Anyone know how to make this work?

    What're these bugs? (Southwest Florida)

Imgur album: https://imgur.com/a/ikTA97e Those photos were taken under extreme magnification and bright light - the actual size is about the size of an uncooked grain of rice. Maybe smaller. This one was killed by freezing to preserve its form. In the last few days I've started to see a lot of these - I can find one crawling across my desk every 5 or 10 minutes if I remember to look (Though I can't find where they're coming from at all). They don't move all that fast - they're frankly pretty easy to capture or squash. In person I don't think they look very much like ants but in the closeup I think they kind of do. Also hoping they aren't termites. Thanks for any help. Edit: Here's a video of one scurrying across my desk too: https://imgur.com/a/ZC15gNZ

Are there any websites that track upcoming cultural events, with a focus on sports and TV?

For example - if a popular TV show is about to have its season or series finale, or a sport league is about to have its championship game. Are there any websites that track these, without all the noise of less important shows or games, to keep track of? ESPN.com does seem to track upcoming sporting events pretty well, but it's not that easy to tell which upcoming games are "big" for the league in question or not.

Can I replace my shower controls? https://i.imgur.com/bG5VEbV.jpg

It seems like every shower has its own unique way of controlling water temperature and pressure. Of all the showers I've ever used, no two of which have ever been alike, I like my controls the least. Plus the faucet has started dripping lately. Is this likely to be something I can replace on my own, without a plumber? To me, that means: Can I likely do this without damaging the wall, without having to mess with pipes, and without needing to do anything involving words like "hacksaw", "weld", or "plumbing torch"? Basically I believe in my ability to buy a faucet and control thingie from Home Depot; to use screwdrivers, allen wrenches, pliers, and regular wrenches; to use things like plumbing tape, lubricants, and caulk; and to remember to turn the water off to the house. Would a project like this likely require anything more complex than that? I tend to prefer shower controls that have separate knobs for hot and cold, but I figure going from a one-knob setup to a two-knob setup is definitely going to require reconfiguring the plumbing. Should sticking with a one-knob solution be okay? I don't know if it matters but I live in Florida in the US, and this place was built in the 1980s. I doubt this matters, but my current controls work by turning the larger knob left or right for temperature, and the smaller knob for pressure. My place does have some annoyances - like the front door is an uncommon size that's difficult to find replacements for at places like Home Depot. Is there any chance of me running into issues like that when it comes to things like the size of the pipe openings? Thanks for any insight. Edit: Thanks for all the replies. It's pretty clear now that this is something that could very easily end up a lot more involved and time consuming and property damaging than I'm comfortable with.

Are there any recurring charges (or other downsides) that come with having a driver's license but not owning a car or regularly driving?

I'm mostly thinking about insurance here. I've been told conflicting information. I live in Florida. I live with someone who has a driver's license and a car, but I don't have either. I've avoided getting one because I have no interest in car ownership, and I feel like if I started driving regularly I'd probably die - I *have* driven before but I really don't think it's something I'd ever get good at. It's undeniable that having one would be convenient though - for rare occasions like emergencies at a minimum but also other scenarios. I know almost nothing about how this stuff works. If I get a license, am I required to acquire and pay for insurance, even if I don't own a car or regularly drive? Or will the person I live with have to pay more for their insurance? Are there any other costs or downsides associated with it that I might not be thinking of? Thanks.

Hollow Knight - 6 Years Later. [Ceave Perspective] [1h31m08s] www.youtube.com

Hollow Knight is an incredibly competent game on pretty much all fronts. In my opinion, Hollow Knight is a masterpiece and we will discuss all the things that make it so great in detail in this Hollow Knight retrospective. However - the one thing that I find most fascinating about Hollow Knight is an aspect of the game that is seldom discussed. The most fascinating aspect of Hollow Knight is that it exists in the first place - because to put it mildly - Hollow Knight’s existence should not be possible. Hollow Knight was developed by only three people, in roughly three years. Three people managed to produce a game that looks this beautiful, features a combat system with a skill ceiling this high, crafted a beautiful world this big, wrote lore that deep, and crafted gameplay this fluid. Three people did a job that puts most teams of 60 people that work for half a decade on a game to shame. How did three pull this off? In this Hollow Knight retrospective, we are going to investigate this question. We are going to find out how it is possible that Hollow Knight even exists!

What’s going on with the reports of a room-temperature superconductor? arstechnica.com

In late July, a couple of startling papers appeared on the arXiv, a repository of pre-peer-review manuscripts on topics in physics and astronomy. The papers claim to describe the synthesis of a material that is not only able to superconduct above room temperature, but also above the boiling point of water. And it does so at normal atmospheric pressures. Instead of having to build upon years of work with exotic materials that only work under extreme conditions, the papers seem to describe a material that could be made via some relatively straightforward chemistry and would work if you set it on your desk. It was like finding a shortcut to a material that would revolutionize society. The perfect time to write an article on those results would be when they've been confirmed by multiple labs. But these are not perfect times. Instead, rumors seem to be flying daily about possible confirmation, confusing and contradictory results, and informed discussions of why this material either should or shouldn't work. In this article, we'll explain where things stand and why getting to a place of clarity will be challenging, even if these claims are right.

So, how many lemmynsfw.com communities have you blocked?

I just reached 112 myself. I'm very much awaiting a time when users can block specific instances. I still don't want to check the option to hide NSFW content, because I do want to see NSFW content that may show up on non-porn communities. Just not really interested in seeing so much porn in All. You can check on your settings page, btw, in the Blocks tab - count quickly with Ctrl+F.

Why can youtube links no longer open as in-line embeds?

About two weeks ago I believe there was some sort of update that let posts that are just youtube links open in-line on the lemmy feed as embeds, by clicking the post thumbnail. This was pretty great. It seems to be back to the old behavior now, where you can't do that anymore. Why? What happened?

Why does my cactus grow so tall it can't stand on its own?

I've had this cactus for a few years, and for a while it's had a problem where it grows so tall that it can't stand up. You can see in the photo that I have it tied to some stakes to keep it upright - if not for those it would literally uproot itself in under a day. Why might this be? I don't know all that much about houseplants. I water this cactus (and my other cactuses, which are not the same species) once every two weeks, about 1 to 1.5 cups of water. I use some cactus fertilizer like twice a year, pretty inconsistently. It lives perpetually indoors with those three light rods visible in the picture as its sole light source (On for 12 hours a day). Given how little I know about proper plant care, I'm sure none of that is ideal - but is any of it the obvious culprit for why this happens? What should I be doing better? Thanks for any help. P.S. Those two nodules just above the lower string are brand new, and it's never branched out like that before - what should I expect them to become? Round bulbs? Branches? Flowers? Nothing at all? The tip top of the cactus being white is also very recent.

YSK if you can't log in, clearing your site data should help

Everyone got logged out after the recent site [hack](https://lemmy.world/post/1290412). For me, when I tried logging in once things were back up, it would tell me I logged in, but I'd actually stay logged out. I assumed the systems were still just down, but when I noticed others were able to log in and post without issue I tried clearing site data - that let me right in. In Firefox or Chrome you can do so quickly by clicking the lock to the left side of the address bar. Figuring I might not be the only one and some stuck-logged-out people may see this.

Where do you think Nintendo will take Zelda from here?

Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are both fantastic games - and Tears of the Kingdom really does feel (to me) like they just took Breath of the Wild, and added a few more years of dev time to it. Where do you think Nintendo will take Zelda from here though? Can they keep with the same new formula? *Should* they? Will a more traditional game feel disappointing after this? I don't really know what I want myself. I think they *should* try something different though. At the same time, I can't help but think I'd be disappointed if the next game was more similar to something like Twilight Princess. Have they boxed themselves in?
