One of the issues indeed.
Here's a few more:
- stringent and unnecessary hardware requirements
- changing app defaults is cumbersome
- Home version requires a MS account
- right click menu costs more clicks than in 10
And so on and so forth...
original_reader 6 months ago • 100%
Looks like it would be easy for MS to allow this out of the box.

Still no properly customisable Start menu? I stay with 10.
Still refusing to let my older devices upgrade for no good reason? I stay with 10.
And a number of further reasons that make me refuse 11.

I agree that it's not great that telemetry is shared, but to say that you buy it "just" to share your data is an exaggeration. I am sure you do useful things with it.
That said, yes, it is bloated and I wish you could really turn off all telemetry. Am totally with you on that.

The way mobile providers charge. The likes of Vodafone, any random Telecom, T-Mobile and so forth. It's a huge scam, bordering theft sometimes. Want samples? Here we go:
"Your credit expires in x days. Better recharge now to not lose it!" (Banks should start doing this /s)
"Your credit has expired. Better give us more money within our generous deadline, or else we are forced to delete your number. We love you."
"Your data has expired. We now charge you a horrendous amount every minute, because we are too greedy to warn you in time. For technical reasons we also cannot stop you from using data after your allowance has been used. Fortunately you still have credit, huh?"
"Your data expires today. We don't insult your intelligence by telling you when. Surely you remember when you bought the package, right? It's not hard to count 24 hours. We also do not send any SMS anymore to save the environment."
"Your data has expired. You need data to buy a new bundle. Our app charges data for our convenience."
"Social media data only works for WhatsApp, but not for Signal. But who uses Signal anyways?"
"Use our customer friendly support chat. Conveniently it uses data. 'Hello, I am your smart bot speaking. How can I help you? I might understand you if you type one of the three questions I have been programmed to answer. Do you want to know more about our products?'"
Edit: added point 2, minor corrections for clarity

It's not like Firefox doesn't collect user data at all. Vivaldi is hard to seriously fault in that area.
Unfortunately, Firefox lacks some features that make it a little clumsy at times. But for general use it is great. I keep it installed and use it almost every day because I believe in the browser engine and the need for diversity in that area. It's just not for every need. At least not for me. That's where Vivaldi and Edge have to help.
original_reader 1 year ago • 100%
I'd venture out there and say Vivaldi in functionality and customisation.
Privacy probably not, though Vivaldi does quite well.
Sadly it's a Chromium browser.

Why would I use this "Geometric Weather" on Android instead of a completely free weather app such as omWeather?
Doesn't show as much information (e.g. dew point, daily forecast details).
Doesn't support multiple weather providers, AFAIK.
Doesn't look as nice, if that matters.
Both apps don't track. I would venture a guess and say that Breezy Weather has the warning, because it includes AccuWeather, which can be turned off and changed to OpenMeteo or others.

SCEE is described as StreetComplete for advanced users. Does anyone have experience with this?
Help to improve the OpenStreetMap with StreetComplete! This app finds incomplete and extendable data in your vicinity and displays it on a map as markers. Each of those is solvable by answering a simple question to complete the info on site. The info you enter is then directly added to the OpenStreetMap in your name, without the need to use another editor.

The guy in the video explains what he means.
So I hope no one votes without really knowing what they are voting for.
Anyway, I thought the commentary made an interesting point. I do not agree with all of it, as it seems a bit extreme at times.
What I do agree with is that modern storytelling can be a bit... well, let's call it inexperienced with life. Whether that's intentional or not, I can't say. Discovery is a prime example. Burnham, for example, breaks rule after rule with little or no consequence. On the contrary, everyone still seems to follow her every suggestion. And when they don't, she goes ahead on her own and the cycle starts all over again. I was so happy to see her demoted a bit in season 4, only to see her become captain the next season.
By that logic, the most stubborn and self-centred people get the most respect. Surely there are parallels to be drawn with today's rich and famous. Art imitates life, yes, but Star Trek was made to show a higher standard.
Like another poster wrote, I hold modern series to the TNG standard (until something better comes along). That crew tended to behave like mature, well-trained officers. Most of the time (why would Riker sleep with that woman in First Contact???). The conversation between Data and Worf mentioned in the video is an excellent example of professional conflict resolution. No angry storming out, no fighting, no swearing, no hard feelings. I enjoy seeing professionals at work. A team bonded by trust and friendship is what I want to be a part of. A group where I never know whether they hold the same standard as me still tomorrow? Not so much.

I have just placed this here without voicing my opinion. Now I am wondering why there are downvotes. Does this mean you disagree with everything said in that commentary?
If you feel this shouldn't have been posted here, I agree with the downvote more or less. Even so, why not say as much?
Voicing a personal opinion is usually more valuable than the click of an arrow, especially on an opinion piece. Just saying ⬇️ "No" is saying very little.
That is only my opinion, of course. 🙂

I just launch Firefox with this option:
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -ProfileManager
Always launches with the profile selector. Then install a profile switcher extension. Done.
Unfortunatley 1) it doesn't really come out of the box and 2) the extension must be installed on every single profile. Not the most obvious or user friendly.

In the past, we would type something like `site:reddit.com` into a search engine to get to the resource we needed. In the meantime, I have already found a few useful tips on Lemmy instances by using the Lemmy search. But since all Lemmy instances are named differently, a simple `site:lemmy` won't work well in a search engine. Do you see a solution for this? Or do we leave this to the search providers to figure out?
With [the latest release of Solus](https://lemmy.ml/post/1825180), I feel I should ask. I have had my eye on this particular distro for some time now. I even did a test installation about two years ago, but it didn't feel as complete as I needed it to be. I am looking for a solid, beginner-friendly rolling Linux distribution for general use. Multimedia, gaming, coding etc. Do you recommend Solus? If so, why? Why not? Looking forward to your thoughts.
I was just about to flush when I felt hairy legs touching my skin from underneath.
I have done some reading and think I have a basic understanding. But if I had to explain it to someone else, I would probably fail, which means I don't understand it well. Please ELI5 this for dummy me.

Am a bit confused about these two and want to learn more. Are there recommended use cases? Which one is more secure? Is there something like the "better" one?
Would you do it?
Pretty much the question. In a mission called "Timber for the Locals" for example, one has to transport 6 loads of Medium Logs. But I can only haul one at a time. Is there a way to attach a second trailer?
Do you agree? Why? Why not? Do you have an alternative suggestion?

![](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/6r9HSrWvNJ0/hqdefault.jpg) In the scene between Q and Jean-Luc Picard, Q delivers an amazingly stirring monologue about the importance of one person, saying "Must it always have galactic import? Universal stakes? Celestial upheaval? Isn't one life enough?" This line is an impressive reminder that sometimes, saving a single individual can be just as important as saving a galaxy. In this moment, we see a different side of Q - one that is vulnerable and sincere. Or was that his true side all along? The scene impresses the deep friendship between Q and Jean-Luc, as Q reveals his true motivation - to heal Jean-Luc's heart. Overall, this scene is such a beautiful and touching moment that adds even more depth to these two already well-developed characters. It reminds me of the power of friendship and the importance of valuing individual lives. "Humans. Your griefs, your pains, fix you to moments in the past long gone. You’re like butterflies with your wings pinned”. There is so much food for thought in this piece of wisdom alone. Every sentence in this scene has its place, has meaning beyond the words expressing it. Note also the stunning, subtle yet powerful soundtrack. This scene and the one to follow is so well paced and delivered by John de Lancie and Patrick Stewart, it will stick with me for many years to come. I have rewatched it over and over. It alone makes the entire 2nd season worthwhile. May we all remember to say this to someome from our heart. Almost nothing means more than this: "You matter to me."
It contains tons of information. Hasn't been updated for a while, but still great.
