cross-posted from: https://lemmy.zip/post/18554134 > A Treasure Trove of Gaming History has been Recovered! **Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII** and an additional 18 Square Enix i-Mode games, thought lost to history, have resurfaced. This impressive haul includes various **Kingdom Hearts** titles, and the recovery process involved using a debug cable method devised by the Kahvibreak Discord member XYZ. > > [Read about the discovery](https://x.com/RockmanCosmo/status/1808606770560188795) > > The incredible efforts of researchers like [RockmanCosmo](https://x.com/RockmanCosmo) and Twitter user [@NaoyaShinota](https://x.com/NaoyaShinota), employing a custom debug cable and Linux scripts, have brought back games such as **Final Fantasy 4 After Years**, **Final Fantasy Legends**, and the **Kingdom Hearts Card Struggle** series. > > For enthusiasts, this is an opportunity to revisit these titles on emulators like DoJa SDK. However, some games like **Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII** still require more work to be made functional. > > Have you played any of these Square Enix feature phone games?

I am SO happy this game is getting made. I loved Astro’s Playroom so much.

Except that one time. We don’t talk about that one time 😰
(For real though I’m glad they put so much thought into the UX with accents, this is an awesome addition to the DE)

This is very silly XD I love it

I tried that but flatpack apps kept using the Gnome file picker anyway, there were some flags for some of them to change it but having to do that for each app felt like too much of a pain ^^;

Tbh there’s been a known issue for like 10+ years where the file picker doesn’t allow for gallery/thumbnail viewing, or really any kind of file list viewing options aside from the absolute basic file list. So like if you’re someone who is uploading images to a website, hope ya named the files in a very specific way cause wooooh. XD
Above anything else, that was the primary reason I switched to KDE Plasma.

Apparently this did actually get fixed somewhat recently but my distro doesn’t seem to have the fix yet so 🤷

I’m not gonna say this is karma biting him in the ass for disallowing the Sonic Xtreme devs use of the Nights engine, but I am gonna say that thinking about that gives me a very nice sense of Schadenfreude.

Gotta say, I appreciate the level of commitment. That bit at the end probably wouldn’t have worked if he didn’t have a baby for the video. Very few YouTubers who are that dedicated to their videos that they do that.

Tbh with something like the Saturn, I'd recommend just grabbing a japanese one. They're typically found much cheaper and are also often in better condition (and come in more colours!)

I am so happy to see this game making a comeback, and in what seems to be a very faithful remake. Hopefully we see Chrono Trigger get a similar treatment!!!
Per /u/Harcroft from /r/OriginalXbox: I’m still plugging away at collecting and distributing original Xbox DLC. Currently we are missing around 300 Title updates and DLC packs. We’ve made a huge amount of progress this year including: -building a list of what we know is missing, it can be found over on [ConsoleMods.org](https://consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:Unarchived_DLC). (thanks to /u/Derf_Jagged to starting and hosting the page!) -Milenko has coded [Pinecone](https://github.com/OfficialTeamUIX/Pinecone), a tool to scan through an Xbox file dump to look for lost content and updates -I’ve built the database file for Pinecone with all known and archived DLC, this information can be access by anyone and be used for any other appliation or tool anyone wants to build -16 new installers released in 2023 so far, with 2 more pending, waiting on testers -The first Auto-Update for Halo 2 was found, rewriting known history for Halo 2 online -The last missing update for Phantasy Star Online: Episode 1 & 2 was found! -A partial set of Mechassault PAL/Region 4 DLC was found which allowed us to generate a full set of PAL DLC for that title (thanks /u/HoneySoakedSeagull!) -A partial dump of Advent Rising DLC was found, allowing us to generate a replacement set of the missing 4 DLCs (thanks /u/CasuallyNoted!) -Ignoring roster updates and duplicate DLCs we got the unique missing DLC list down to just 1 title! Shikigami no Shiro II -We figured out a way to force the Xbox to load a title update from a different version of a game, paving the way to “spoofed” title updates to maximize compatibility between players on System Link and Xbox Live replacement services (thanks navipar!) The year isn’t even half up yet and we’ve done so much, I can’t wait to see how much we get done as a community before the end of the year. Please go out and find Xboxes that had connected to Xbox Live before the hard drives die! For PAL regions we’re badly in need of German and French console dumps. We’re also badly in need of console dumps from Japan and South East Asia. Thanks for reading!

Hello! I'm interested in hopefully one day moving to Colorado. However, it would depend on my partner finding a job down that way (he's a procurement analyst) so we've been looking. I figured since this sub exists, that I'd ask and see, are there any things one should know that would help with relocating to Colorado/after relocation?

Fun fact- HIV PREP absolutely is free under the ACA, but nearly all insurance companies in the US actively defy regulation by making up ways not to cover it (which still aren’t in line with the law). Excuses like:
-We need you to use a specific medication -We’ll only cover it if you go to a specific pharmacy -It’s not on our formulary -We can only cover 60% -Oh but there are patient assistance programs! Why don’t you use those instead? We’ll help you get set up with one!
All of these are serious ACA violations and need to be treated as such. If your insurance does this, get in touch with your state’s department of insurance and file a complaint. I did this and had PREP for free within days after nearly a year of fighting.

The best thing I can think of is probably Pixelfed or even a dedicated Masto profile or something, but neither is really ideal. I’d love to see a federated Imgur emerge- and I wouldn’t be fully surprised if one eventually does.

Fun fact, .hack’s Altimit OS was very heavily based on the early previews for Square Enix’s PlayOnline Viewer, with nearly every feature lifted direct from it (Email, News, BBS/Chat, Wallpaper/BGM selection). Also interesting ya mention Front Mission since Front Mission Online ran via PlayOnline Viewer. :)

I’d strongly suggest AtlasOS over Tiny11 once the Atlas team have finished adding 11 support- it’s really solid and does a great job of improving system stability and removing the bloatware/tracking without compromising important features and backend stuff.

Honestly that’s one thing that has me hype about the great reddit migration. Maybe we can finally have a chance at a positive, kind alternative to that platform.
But legit keep doing what you do, I hope I get to see more from ya :D

That’s actually a great point, thank you for bringing that up, I hadn’t thought about it that way. IIRC, can’t PeerTube fallback to non-P2P video as well? Perhaps not ideal but might be a way of getting stuff to mobile users.

I love Mastodon, I was an admin for years and now am a user on another instance and both have been very positive experiences!
Casuallynoted 1 year ago • 100%
Oh! And another great example of plugins vs native features (since I didn’t have enough characters):
While running an instance, foreign language content kept coming in en masse, I was like wait why- my instance is set to English. When I asked on their Matrix they were like yeah it doesn’t have language filtering capabilities. I was like ok is that a planned feature? And they said no but someone can make a plugin for it.
Meanwhile, on Masto I can go into my preferences and filter my language in two seconds lol

I feel that atm PeerTube has too many issues to make it viable and am hoping for a different platform to rise up. My issues with PeerTube largely come down to five things based on when I last used it (a few months ago):
-
UX/UI: It really suffers in this department. It looks and feels kind of old and unintuitive. This is the least of my complaints but imo it’s one of the worst mainstream fedi UIs.
-
Over-reliance on plugins vs native features. The devs have taken a strategy of “Feature doesn’t exist? People can make a plugin for it!” for several features, most notably stream live chat. In practice this means even more dependencies and even more components that can break with updates/changes. And since they’re not unilateral across instances it makes everything even more confusing than most fedi sites. IMO plugins should only be for slight changes that affect the local experience rather than major requested features.
-
Lack of a mobile app. As someone who doesn’t watch YouTube on my PC much but does on my phone, the devs statement that they don’t see mobile as a priority at all and have no plans to develop a mobile app really sucks. What does exist is exclusively for android and imo isn’t a great user experience either. This immediately kills my desire to watch content on a PeerTube instance.
-
Moderation problems. PeerTube has a serious lack of moderation tools for instances to where federating is largely not recommended due to neo-nazi and alt-right content slipping in even when you’re really trying to keep it out. Most federation features have notices saying that enabling them isn’t recommended. Yikes. When I was running an instance I had a very hard time keeping questionable content at bay, while I don’t have that issue on Masto or Pixelfed or really anything else.
-
Set up/maintenance can be a nightmare. Trying to set up a PeerTube instance involves a mess of dependencies and the upgrade process is not nearly as smooth as other software. I can say this as someone who has hosted PeerTube and had it break during an update about five or six times.
