Can users from my instance still downvote with the API on other federated instances if I turn off downvotes on my instance?

I want to make signing up to my instance as unattractive to bots and vote manipulation as possible. If I could turn off all voting on Lemmy I absolutely would. I think activitypub votes are spam and just because reddit used them doesn't mean that it should be required. I used forums and other websites for a long time before Reddit even existed without voting and my time with Reddit and now Lemmy has left me unconvinced that it is worth while. I think engagement with comments is the only thing worth anything on this platform and some day I'd like to see a sorting algorithm that only took traffic and comments into account for scoring. Anyway, I try my best to review the users who sign up and the comments that are made to my instance. I typically deny new applicants with disposable email addresses as well. But there are some accounts that were created that have no activity that I can see easily from lemmy-ui and I'm not really at the point where I am reviewing SQL database. I want to confirm disabling downvotes at least prevented that kind of bot activity and I was wondering if there is anything else I can be doing? I can see how upvoting fascist and western centric points of view can also be problematic by boosting a state actor's propaganda in a mirror of downvotes silencing minority views.

Join us for Sunnyvision, the summer edition of Lemmyvision!

I hope my post doesn't break the rules ; I'd like to invite as many people as possible to participate to Sunnyvision, the summer edition of the Lemmyvision song contest. It's a fun way to celebrate summer, and discover new music, more info on the original post, quoted below ! > > ***TL;DR*** > - In ~~this thread~~ the thread on [!lemmyvision@jlai.lu](https://jlai.lu/c/lemmyvision), in the comments, post a song that was released in summer of any year. > - Next week, you'll be able to vote for your favourite song from the songs posted here. > > Remember that time I wanted to set up a smaller scale Lemmyvision for summer? Yeah me neither. > > But here it is, it's still summer for a week, so.. > > > ***Welcome to Lemmyvision's summer edition, Sunnyvision!🌞*** > > If you don't know what Lemmyvision is, check out the sidebar! > > *The aim is to promote different languages and cultures from around the world, to share more between our online communities across Lemmy, and discover songs from lesser known artists.* > > The first edition concluded on April (https://jlai.lu/post/6041838) with 9 instances/countries/communities participating! The Northern Boys - Sexy Train (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VXKhJfRQ7k), the feddit.uk submission, won! > > For this 'lighter' edition, the goal is to celebrate the last week of summer, with some summer related tunes. You do not need to bring your instance/community, everyone can share a song, no matter what instance they're on, as long as they can federate here! > > > ***Rules*** > - Just post a song that was released in summer, from any year you want > - At the end of the week I'll gather all the songs posted in this thread > - You'll then be able to listen to a playlist with all those songs, and vote for your favourite! > > Spread the word if you can, and I hope you have fun, and that everyone can discover new music! 🎶

Has the IndieWeb become discourse again? - Marty McGuire martymcgui.re

I recently read Has the IndieWeb Become Irrelevant from starbreaker.org. The post does a great job linking to and summarizing a spate of posts that I will call “people being mad at the IndieWeb”, while also being one of these posts. These posts accuse “the IndieWeb” of being elitist, exclusionary, overengineered, complicit, and unnecessary, among many other things. There are some common threads I noticed among these posts: None of them mention micro.

A general fediverse client for multiple content types? (mastodon, lemmy, pixelfed, etc.)

Is there any fediverse client out there (mobile or pc or web) that has support for multiple types of content, rather than just for one? Most apps I find are only mastodon-like (including pleroma etc.), or only lemmy-like, or only peertube-like. One of the main benefits of the fediverse is that I could theoretically access all of those from one platform. But the clients I saw don't seem to support it too well.

Threads deepens its ties to the open social web, aka the ‘fediverse’ techcrunch.com

"Threads is deepening its ties to the fediverse, also known as the open social web, which powers services like X alternative Mastodon, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Flipboard and other apps. On Wednesday, Meta announced that users on Threads will be able to see fediverse replies on other posts besides their own. In addition, posts that originated through the Threads API, like those created via third-party apps and scheduling services, will now be syndicated to the fediverse. The latter had previously been announced via an in-app message informing users that API posts would be shared to the fediverse starting on August 28."

Feature requests for a lemmy moderation bot

cross-posted from: https://programming.dev/post/18411894 > Hello Lemmings! > > I am thinking of making a community moderation bot for Lemmy. This new bot will have faster response times with the help of [Lemmy webhooks](https://github.com/RikudouSage/LemmyWebhook), an amazing plugin for Lemmy instances by @rikudou@lemmings.world to add webhook support. With this, there is no need to frequently call the API at a fixed interval to fetch new data. Any new data will be sent via the webhook directly to the bot backend. This allows for actions within seconds, thus making it an effective auto moderation tool. > > I have a few features I thought of doing: > - Welcome messages > - Auto commenting on new posts > - Scheduled posts > - Punish content authors or take action on content via word blacklist/regex > - Ban members of communities by their usernames/bios via word blacklist or regex > - Auto community lockdown during spam > > What other features do you think are possible? > Please let me know. > Any questions are also welcome. > > Community requested features: > - Strike system > > Strikes are added to a certain member of the community and the member will be temporarily banned within a time period if their strike count reaches a certain threshold > - Post creation restriction by account age > > If an account's age is lower than X, remove the post.

Lemmy vs. PieFed vs. Mbin

I've been researching for the past week Threadiverse projects (Lemmy at first, then PieFed and now Mbin) with the goal of **testing out their interoperability with the rest of the Fediverse**. Apologies in advance if this is the third post you see from me - **this one is my first in Mbin**. I wonder if you have any **insights** regarding the differences between the 3 - advantages/disadvantages and opinions on your favorite project? I'm also interested to see if Mbin manages to **federate mentions** (unlike Lemmy and PieFed who falls short). So for the purposes of this test, I'm mentioning: - my Mastodon account @_elena@mastodon.social - my Friendica account @elena@opensocial.space - and my Lemmy account @elena@lemmy.world to see if anything happens Thanks and happy to be here!

Should one remove all Reddit posts and comments?

Do the advantages of deleting one's entire Reddit history outweigh the disadvantages? I have previously nuked my first Reddit account because it felt satisfactory to be completely detached from a platform one considers unethical/bad. Though, I have garnered quite some history on a second account—because [Duty Calls](https://xkcd.com/386/)*, of course—and I'm considering doing the same. However, I don't want to do it impulsively. I think I might be blind to some disadvantages. What do you think? *![](https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/2c5af2d8-6645-4317-8ac9-d24b954bd0d6.png)

Can someone please explain the nuance of federation that allows this?

So here I am sitting on lemmy.ml which is defederated from threads (and which I chose primarily for that reason) and I see a comment from the user above. That comment is on a community at lemmy.world, and the user is apparently registered with their @threads username through @sh.itjust.works. IIRC .world does NOT respect the fedipact, and I guess this means sh.itjust.works must not either, but I'm super confused by the username. So I guess I still need to just block all the threads users I see, defederation or not?

Hello From Friendica - Quick Activity Pub cross compatibility test

Hello From Friendica - Quick Activity Pub cross compatibility test [@fediverse](https://lemmy.ml/c/fediverse) Hi, sorry, I hope this isn't to spammy, I was revising some writings on the various social media protocols and wanted to test some stuff before I stated it as fact. What it appears (and confirms if you're seeing this) is that you can post to lemmy via a blogging/microblogging instance as long as you '@' the lemmy community. First line is the title and the rest is the post itself. Have a good night everyone. edit: testing edits

Lots of dead Lemmy/Kbin domains have CNAME records pointing to the same domain parking company

I think thread deletion is problematic and needs some consideration and changes

A large percentage of threads I've created or participated in have been deleted. Worse is that when visiting the URL everything is completely gone. This is much more drastic when compared with Reddit thread deletions, where the thread is there and so is the discussion. And the creator of the thread has access to their content. The Lemmy method discourages people from participating in threads and creating high-quality content, much more so than the Reddit method. A bunch of lively and useful discussions on Lemmy have completely disappeared. And it makes it seem like a waste of time to even contribute content here. --- EDIT: I see that the "fediverse" link for posts has been removed. I posted this to lemmy.ml from a lemmy.world account and there's no way for me to get the lemmy.ml link now. And when I crosspost it it shows a lemmy.world link instead of the lemmy.ml one. I think this should be changed [back].
