This , and I think the price will comedown a lot and soon, market pressure will see to that asap. We have yet to really see the economy of scale that is coming through and r&d for batteries is at a all time high. Plenty of promising developments in the very near future including the one cited in the op

I have just read this entire thread and I have two observations.
1 the "tumble" discussion is unbelievably ironic as the whole public climate discussion has for years been a case of mass distraction IMO.
2 The other central discussion is dominated by someone , clearly a skeptic, and repeatably described as a troll, and although the basic assumptions taken are just factually wrong the context of the consequences discussed are more insightful that the rebuttals.
So currently the power and money is dominated by industries that do not want to change and they frustrate attempts to create meaningful global change. What change has occurred has been when money and power wish that change. Political courage will be needed to make things happen with any sort of urgency IMO

Basically my heart is here now and this is where I come for social media , that does not mean I will not use reddit from time to time , but those times are getting less and less, my main reason to use reddit now is to promote lemmy. To give a better idea I spent probably an hour a day on reddit or two or three visits. Now I have not visited for over a week and recent visits have been a few minutes.

Epic post, really good advice, MInt is the way to go IMO as well, the Xfce version is perfect for my needs and really stable, indeed having dabbled with linux for years this is the only version I have used for more than a year, actually just checked and I have been on mint now since 2020 with just the one upgraded installation. I actually duel boot but never actually boot into window for anything other than occasional work needs.

I have just visited reddit for the first time in quite a while , the picture imo is pretty grim for reddit. Dead subs , little actual life , and when you log out the front page is dire. I think that actual content is key here and that is where the crisis for reddit is shown clearly. Talk of the protest not working is just that, talk , in reality reddit has been deeply effected imo

My voices say that de-fed is best and I worry that not everyone will perceive the terrible consequences of not doing so. and yay for star trek :-)
I think it is really important that we do not let our uniqueness be diluted but am I wrong?

This is so Elon playbook , send in the lawyers and see what happens. TBH these games are irreverent to normal people, lets de-fed from any corporate instance and just build a better community
phil299 1 year ago • 98%
My gut tells me we should defed all corporate instances as a matter of policy. Our uniqueness is at jeopardy , think of threads like the borg.
phil299 1 year ago • 100%
I guess IF the fediverse decided universally not to fed and moved the code away from threads adding features say meta did not want, then they would be seen as de-facto gatekeeper again.

Decent instance? Not sure that is the right question as all channels on any instance are equally visible. So from a viewer point of view any instance with good uptime and open registrations that you feel confident will have longevity will do.
If you are uploading than all the above and decent upload quotas are the key imo.
Activity levels are not really the point I think

Peertube platform list here
You have to open a account to :-
Comment videos
Subscribe to channels to be notified of new videos
Have access to your watch history
Create your channel to publish videos
Although you should be able to follow specific platforms via something like mastodon
phil299 1 year ago • 100%
I really do not think that they are aiming to join the fediverse , the subscription model really suggests they want your money and have broadcast aspirations. I also think that the offerings are fairly low level atm of course that might change but I doubt it.
phil299 1 year ago • 100%
This by no means a expert explanation. But as I understand it peertube and owncast are video sharing sites that operate much like lemmy but for video. So people start platforms ( like a instance on lemmy ) and then other people can join said platform and watch the videos , however like lemmy you can watch videos across all platforms ( I assume much like lemmy as long as the platform admins allow ). Both peertube and owncast say they are Fediverse projects and as such it should be possible to access the videos on other fediverse enabled applications although not sure how well this in implemented.
I have to say as youtube alternatives I think they fit the bill best as it is free to watch , open source and quite an elegant solution , clearly early days but none the worse for that imo
Under the hood I believe it is a distributed load system ( a bit like the BBC's Iplayer ) but that is beyond my pay grade.
EDIT
BTW peertube = youtube alterative owncast = twitch alternative tilvids = peertube platform

Those do not appear to be written by him, but will do some more digging. However open exchange of views is wise in my opinion even if they are those I personally do not agree with. Edit Rightly ho, although I clearly have not read all the material on display (openly public btw) it is obviously the repository of someone who is willing to explore the far left politically , but the essays that might be by him(some are not accredited) are not on the subjects you mentioned, those are accredited to others. Now this dev might or might not agree with this stuff, they might be a politics student I can not say but I doubt anyone has asked. I am not sure it is particularly relevant in this thread anyway.

I have seen the conspiracies posts as well but assumed they were just reddit shill accounts spreading disinformation, no one I know has taken them seriously. It is interesting to see this point of view, especially the "this day would come" bit, for me I sort of knew something was wrong , but it is like your local pub slowly being taken over, you do not want it to be true so you ignore stuff you should not.

Seems that if we delay deleting content to after July 1st it might be nigh on impossible. As traffic from goggle to old posts will still benefit reddit should we delete or not? EDIT [just spotted this](https://thomashunter.name/posts/2023-06-19-how-to-delete-reddit-account-gdpr-ccpa)

Made a post on Reddit book collecting sub to offer alternative.
On the right hand side top under the community name there is the edit community and next to that , dangerously close, is a delete option. That could easily clicked in a panic, does anyone know if there is at least an "are you sure", would hate to delete a whole community by accident.
I created this community because I enjoyed the sub of the same name at the place that shall not be named. If any mods from the other place want in on this just message me and I am happy to hand it off to you. Regards Phil
