You can tell them that you would rather write about someone cool like an empress rather than someone pathetic who only ever rose to the ranks of Prime Minister. If Margaret Thatcher had been half the woman with half the ambition of Empress Wu Zetian, she would have done a coup d'etat the queen of England, ripped the crown off her corpse, and reinstated absolute monarchy in England. Instead she meekly settled for Prime Minister. Pathetic.
I lol'd at this, especially keeping in mind that this family member of mine thought Margaret Thatcher was so iconic to have risen to power in a patriarchal world (like Wu didn't do the exact same thing).
Unrelated but have you read Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao? It's at like the intersection of sci fi and fantasy and is directly inspired by Wu Zetian. I also think it's a book all leftists should love because it's very much a revolutionary story that rejects every bullshit defanging and subversion that Western revolutionary stories put in to sabotage revolution (For more on those sabotaging tropes: https://redsails.org/the-swerve). If you haven't read it I cannot recommend it enough. It's so damn good.
My friend actually introduced this book to me after I told her I'd be studying Wu! Strongly considering reading it now that you vouch for it, too.

Spoke to a family member today. Talked about how I'm gonna write a student thesis on Wu Zetian, the only female emperor of China. Was promptly met with "but why not write about women like Margaret Thatcher? So many more references and much more recent!" Cue me asking why I should study a known European figure rather than somebody more unknown (and more interesting imo) overseas? Family member goes on to tell me how "easy it was for medieval women overseas to gain power, they just had to marry their emperor husband!", and how European history is so much more interesting and tragic and worth analysing because everything is so complex in Europe compared to those "primitive cultures." Family member then jumps to how Europeans have invented EVERYTHING and how everybody else copies us (clothes, music, science) and Europe is the sole inventor of everything apparently. I get up and leave. Apologies for the rant. Do y'all have any supporting words or advice on how to speak to these individuals? I thought I could post this here because I appreciate y'all's anti-colonialist attitude, but do feel free to remove if it's appropriate.

Yeah, that makes sense. I actually think the distinction between female emperor and empress is interesting, because (I think) it suggests becoming an empress in the first place wasn't possible due to the patriarchal structures. I am looking to research how she affected female gender roles / the view of women since becoming a ruler. I believe those in her closest political circles were all women, which must suggest she did it on purpose because she knew that hadn't been possible before?
Asking because I'm writing a paper on her and I think a lot of you like Chinese history/politics. Please don't shoot me for being non-Hexbearian. Do you like the way she ruled? Was she a positive influence? Do you agree with the critics or people who praise her?

I also had another question. I've tried to get my parents to use NextDNS, but they think it's blocking too many sites (like "sponsored websites) so they don't use it. I wonder if I should use a DNS on my router at all because I don't want my visitors to get blocked from any sites, or is there a way to configurate NextDNS so it doesn't block those sponsored sites?
Furthermore, what are the consequences of using a VPN and DNS on a router AND your phone (different locations, etc)?

Solid advice. I already know what brand is good in my area (Bahnhof), and I've enjoyed using Mullvad and NextDNS, so I already know what VPN and DNS I'm comfortable with.
I've always been a bit confused about the exact purpose of PiHole, what it is and such, but I'll have to read up on it and see if it fits my needs.
At risk of sounding stupid, I need some pointers on how to set up a Wi-Fi router and make it as private and secure as possible. To sound even more stupid, I don't really know what PiHole is, or why some people route their traffic through a VPN. I suppose my main questions are these: - What Wi-Fi router should I get? - How do I configurate it as somebody who is somewhat privacy-conscious but not very tech-savvy? I don't really know how regular Wi-Fi routers work, what the common worries are, how/if data is at risk of being leaked, and so on. So, any pointers would be appreciated! Feel free to direct me to any privacy guides, as well. Cheers!

I'm not sure what to call this specific genre, either. What the hell is shoegaze, anyway?
Not sure if I used the correct terms but what is the difference in security and privacy between downloading from a public wifi (or a closed wifi; with password) and mobile hotspot (sharing 4G/5G data from your phone to your computer)? Which one is recommended or does it not matter?

Like the stupid newbie goober I am, I forgot the first step to downloading music: do it in a public setting with a public wifi. Ended up downloading it all at home off of our private wifi. Did use a VPN but forgot to switch it from my home country. Kind of wondering how easy it is to trace me and persecute me for this. I am not the one handling the ordeal with the wifi, that would be my lovely mother. Cheers y'all!
