I could see AI taking over a lot of storyboarding and preliminary drafts of stuff to a degree. But vfx? I guess it depends of the vfx but we're not there yet on most things I thought? Unless they mean like a visual auto tune which could maybe work?

Regardless we need to figure out how to operate society as automation continues to accelerate, replacing jobs faster than we can spin up new ones and retrain people. A lot of people are going to starve if we don't have a solution in place. Here's to hoping capitalism chokes itself to death with minimal loss of life

I'm on appeal #3 right now with my insurance for something they told me would be 100% covered. I'm getting my doctor in on it to do a peer to peer. He sounded so fed up with everything he was like "it's probably some retired pediatrician who doesn't know anything about what you need" when talking about who he'd need to talk with. If this one doesn't work then I'm on to the "threaten to sue" stage which I'm not excited about. The whole thing is a mess and the process and money that's gone into it would have easily bankrupted or put me homeless at most previous times in my life

I feel like people are tearing you a new one for suggesting an actually useful and arguably ethical use of AI... If it isn't for profit, it isn't for the public, it's fine. The only real concern is energy usage which don't get me wrong is a problem but nerds getting past writers block isn't going to be a meaningful impact compared to massive companies running millions of prompts with their public facing help bots. GMs yoink content from other creators constantly sometimes nearly word for word. Not everyone has the time to sink into building a shiny and perfect original world and tools like AI let them spend the time they have actually playing with friends. Don't hate on people for liking or using AI for mundane personal stuff when the fight is with companies abusing these tools

What about a bash script that calls your CI/CD because the system is so old and complex anyone learning how to use it immediately builds a 1-off tool to hide what they don't need but then everyone starts relying on that 1-off bash script so you extend the functionality then replace it with a proper tool then let that rot so you need a new bash script to call that to hide the useless parts?

    Lower surgery big update!

So this morning I wasn't able to stand without nearly passing out and thought for sure they weren't going to let me go home. I was really down and having some difficulty processing that I might need to be in the hospital for yet another extra day. It was really disheartening because I had actually been able to walk previous days but after the pain spikes I wasn't able to I got a motivational call from someone close to me though, the hospital trans outreach person brought the emotional support chihuahua by a couple of times, and I built really specific plans with my nurses and doctors for ways I could get walking again It took so much work and I was exhausted through the entire way but I managed to do it! Also bonus points I finally managed to poop which was a big event after five days of not 😐 They let me out of the hospital, one hour car ride back home with only some minor screaming pain toward the end, and I'm back on track again. I've walked around a couple more times today, like to go from bed to food to couch, I'm extremely exhausted, but we're back on track after the couple extra nights at the hospital I get to bumble around with the catheter for a couple more days still but that will be out soon enough Update 1: I used a walker but I got out of bed, across the house, and into a couch without help from caretakers! This is the first time I haven't needed someone to at least help lift my legs up once I'm at the target destination. Last night was mostly amazing I finally got more than like two hours of sleep at once (at hospital there were constantly people waking me up for various meds and tests). I did have one brief period of bladder spasms which felt pretty awful but now I know what they feel like for me early on so hopefully I can catch them early next time and get ahead of it. I'm really happy right now Update 2: Yesterday went well I did a lot of good walking. I'm not doing the full suggested amount yet though I'm running into serious fatigue partway through the day. Today the primary goal is to get through not being able to do bladder spasms meds for 24 hours before catheter removal. So I'm staying really on top of pain meds basically, making sure to continue to shift off the heavy pills and move to tylenol and ibuprofen. Having to be laying down so much is really starting to set in some back pain so hopefully my endurance gets better quickly and I can move around give my back some variety Update 3: As expected my bladder spasms are casually ignoring the pain meds so I'm trying to find out if there is anything that I can do other than suffering for the next 18 or so hours. Good news though is I made it up two stairs to get myself outside! I said hello to some bees and listened to the birds yelling at each other, smelled some lavender bushes, really helped with mental health Update 4: If I wanted to torture someone I'd put a catheter in them then just wander off for a weekend. I've only got about 8 more hours before this cursed device comes out of me

    Just had lower surgery!

Currently laying in the hospital, like 18 hours post surgery. I didn't ever think I'd get here and there has been so much hardship but I'm here and so far recovery is going well. Obviously there is still a long way to go and there could be complications down the line but I'm happy and well right now I've been able to have a full meal already and in a few hours they're going to see if I'm able to shuffle around. The nurses have all been so kind to me. When I went into the OR before I was under, they let me name the giant robot arm machine. Everyone here has been good I feel very cared for Because all the meds and bandages my brain hasn't made the connection yet though which is exceptionally weird. I'm having phantom limb basically. I've read about that happening can't say it prepared me for how it actually feels in person though Update 1: I was able to walk two times, the third attempt I almost passed out after standing up though. I've had some good hours of sleep but suddenly got very locked in feeling and anxious, my body is sore from laying down and not being mobile enough to get comfortable spiked my anxiety. They're going to give me a relaxant soon. Tomorrow we're going to try and get a good breakfast, a warm drink, some anti nausea, and see if I can walk around outside my room some. I think I'll be able to but it's going to be rough. Drinking lots of water because I'm off the drip now and need a ton of fluids still Update 2: I walked like 15 feet and back! My entire day has been the singular goal of making sure I had as much going for me as I could to make that walk. Breathing exercises, nausea control, carefully timing different meds, staying well hydrated. It took everything I had but I did it and I'm feeling pretty good. Almost completely unassisted too only needed help moving after I got back to the bed and couldn't lift my legs back up. going to try and do it all again today and be ready for discharge tomorrow noon-ish. Update 3: No discharge today. Last night was spent mostly screaming in pain :/ Doctor came in to look and said it's a stitch on the bolster being pulled taught from swelling. I got new outer padding on to help, some pain med refreshers, and told because I showed how well I could walk yesterday that I should focus on taking it easy today and getting swelling down. No stitches or anything popped while I was flopping around in pain so really about as best as it could have been. I'm so proud of how well I walked yesterday and come tomorrow I'm going to be seriously itching to wander around again instead of being bedlocked Update 4: First attempt at walking today almost ended in me shitting myself and passing out. If I can't get walking around today then they're going to end up keeping me at the hospital another day. I'm really tired of the hospital bed and morale is a bit difficult to maintain right now but I've got to keep going forward. I know I can walk I've already been up and about several times it's just if I can walk well on release day

(long rant) Feeling very isolated and scared

Just want to note ahead of time, yes I'm in an enormous amount of therapy already Nothing in particularly spicy detail but topics and possible triggers include: Surgery, breakups, alcoholism, sex, generally poor mental health I'm having surgery in June which I'm very excited about but also it's a big thing to be going through and I've needed a lot of emotional support. I spent the last few years building up my social circle and being in a vibrant polycule. In the last year though I've managed to go through 5 breakups, 4 of which were very long term, and now a divorce. This most recent breakup has been so hard on me, I was starting to heal from my paranoia I'd get dumped out of nowhere, the day I finally couldn't hold it in any more and was going to tell them I loved them they broke up with me before I had the chance. I don't have any partners left, I've only got a couple friends left one of them is in a different state. I spent years lining up my social circle with a lot of care and now that I need it most it's just crumbles. This recent breakup was kinda my last hope to have a grounding intimate relationship through surgery. They were such a lucky find and everything I've been hoping for and missing and I was healing so much pain just being around them but that's all gone now. There's only like 10 weeks before surgery and last time I tried finding anyone it took months of heartbreaking work. I don't do well without physical comfort, I'm back to sleeping only a couple hours a night, I'm losing weight again really quickly, I can feel my body falling apart from the stress I'm doing what I can to find people, going to bars even though I've been sober for almost three years now (I'm getting Shirley Temples so I feel less out of place), I've completely gone through multiple dating apps, I even went to a sex club for the first time the other day which was kinda magical but didn't help with a lot of what I'm going through. I'm scared something is going to go wrong with surgery and I feel a major urge to use what I've got while it is still here. I'm also not very attracted to other trans women which I feel ostracizes me from the local trans community. Often the expectation is because I'm into women and I'm trans I should make exceptions on my genital preferences for trans women; this has caused a major disconnect with how I'm able to socialize with the local trans community. It's so difficult to find people I match well with physically and emotionally and I've lost everyone I spent years finding. I was really hoping to have an intimate relationship to ground me before and after surgery and to have a trusting relationship be there while I'm learning my new body. My tranniversary is coming up soon too. The last couple I had were filled with people and they were so special. This one I knew there wouldn't be very many people so I made plans with my now ex, we were going to do something out of town just us so I could get away from the bad feelings. Now I guess I get to celebrate my tranniversary alone, the one a month before surgery. I don't know how I'm going to keep doing this. After surgery instead of being in a caring environment I get to split finances in the divorce and move into an apartment likely by myself maybe with total strangers. I'm completely burnt out at work, at life, I feel cut off from people and now I have major trust issues. I honestly don't know how I've gotten this far without picking up drinking again. Every day I want to nose dive off the wagon. I'm so hurt and scared and don't think 10 weeks is enough time to figure out how not to be. I know going to clubs and stuff trying to hook up probably isn't good for me but I don't know how to stop this empty pain in me without human comfort

As such, it is a key component that will impact the value-chain of intelligent products - from R&D to manufacturing, operations, and services,” comments William Rozé, CEO of Capgemini Engineering and Group Executive Board member. “This new agreement with Unity will allow Capgemini to embed 3D visualization software capabilities into our end-to-end business transformation services, to help clients realize the immediate and longer-term benefits of intelligent industry.” “Unity has reached a point in its growth where the opportunity for us in the enterprise market has outpaced our ability to scale fast enough to meet client demand,” explains Jim Whitehurst, CEO, Unity. “With its scale and breadth of services – from design and engineering to business transformation and data expertise, Capgemini is well placed to unleash the full potential of Unity technology for enterprise clients across industries with specific use cases.” As part of this agreement Capgemini plans to scale a range of sector-specific solutions that are currently in high demand. Particularly relevant for automotive, consumer products & retail, energy & utilities, aerospace & defense, healthcare & life sciences, and industrial products/manufacturing, tailored offerings are expected to include: - Simulation: A digital representation of an asset, facility or product that emulates its real-world counterpart through advanced modeling to provide real-time insights and simulate future scenarios. - Human Machine Interfaces: Interactive experiences for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI), meters (gauge clusters), and additional screens. - Immersive Training: Engaging training experiences in interactive 3D or augmented or virtual reality (AR and VR) to enable better knowledge transfer and safer workplaces. :::

I registered the big stupid cars domain lol

As found in https://lemmy.ml/post/12000676 It seemed like a fun bit so I registered the domain. I have nginx running on a server but we need to wait for the dns records to hopefully point things the right way. So while that's in progress, what should I put on the new site? (keeping in mind the server I got is absolutely tiny because I'm not spending -that- much on a bit, also my website making skills are minimal) Edit, here's the link for whenever dns goes through: http://www.learnhowtodriveyourbigstupidcaryoudumbfuck.com/ Edit: Got the url to work and hopefully it is redirecting correctly to https. Now to figure out adding things people are suggesting using my 15+ year out of date website making knowledge

Exclusive-Unity Software cutting 25% of staff in ‘company reset’ continuation www.yahoo.com

By Anna Tong (Reuters) - Videogame software provider Unity Software will target laying off approximately 25% of its workforce, or 1,800 jobs, the company said in a regulatory filing and internal company memo on Monday. This is the San Francisco-based company’s largest layoff ever, with completion expected by the end of March, the company said. While Unity is not widely recognized outside the gaming industry, over 1.1 million game creators rely on its software toolkit each month, including the maker of the popular “Pokemon Go,” “Beat Saber” and “Hearthstone” games. Monday’s deep job cut will affect all teams, regions and areas of the business, the company told Reuters. The layoffs come shortly after interim CEO Jim Whitehurst announced a “company reset” in November. “We are … reducing the number of things we are doing in order to focus on our core business and drive our long-term success and profitability,” Whitehurst wrote in the memo to all Unity employees on Monday. While Whitehurst provided no specifics on structural changes to come, a company spokesperson confirmed there will be additional changes coming. This is the fourth round of layoffs the company has conducted within the last year. The layoffs and company reset follow a tumultuous period for Unity. In September last year, the company tried to impose a new “runtime fee” pricing policy, which charged new fees to its game developers if certain revenue and install thresholds were met. Following a developer revolt and a steep dropoff in share price, the company revamped the new fees. Following the controversy, then-Unity CEO John Riccitiello retired, and the company appointed former IBM president Whitehurst as interim CEO and president and Sequoia Capital partner Roelof Botha as board chairman. In November, Whitehurst announced the first part of the company reset, which included terminating an agreement with a visual effects company founded by the “Lord of the Rings” director, closing offices and no longer mandating employees work from offices. Monday’s layoff is the second part of the company reset. Unity was founded nearly two decades ago by three Danish engineers, and gained popularity among game developers for its “game engine” that makes it simpler to develop and publish games across different platforms, such as via mobile or virtual reality. It is also used in other industries like film and automotive for 3D visualization and virtual reality. After its IPO in 2020, Unity's stock reached a peak of around $200 in November 2021, but subsequently fell below $30 last year. Shares have risen since Whitehurst announced the company reset. Flail Snail with Goblin Rider

Here's one I painted for a friend, flail snails are one of their favorite DnD monsters. Lot of firsts on this one: Using UHU glue for slime effects, smooth color transition (red/yellow eye stalks), played with some red/blue duo pigment for the shell, and I'd never made a desert base before. I'm pretty happy with the results!

    Ranting, Could use some encouragement

I've somehow managed about a year and a half without drinking. A couple things helped me stop but the biggest one was the people in my life supporting me and the deep connections I had. I'm poly and married (for now anyway) so a lot of my emotional stability is through having several people very close to me. This fucking year though. This year I lost my anchor partner who I was expecting to move in with, two other long term partners, a third long-term partner hasn't been talking to me much lately, my spouse of over a decade is wanting a divorce (which has been expected for a while still rough though). Losing my anchor partner has absolutely fucked me up. I was falling more in love with them every day and we were talking often about our future togerher. They broke up with me very out of the blue via text. Add to all this my job is talking laying off a huge amount of employees. I'm fighting with insurance and might end up owing something like $50k. This whole year has been like this just piling on more stressors faster than they can be resolved. The previous year was so happy and everything was working out, I felt connected and like my future was going places. I don't understand how things shifted so dramatically in so many ways. So the encouragement I guess I'm calling into the void for is guys, I want to drink every day. I'm so tired. Most the people who helped me stop drinking are gone or are on their way out. I thought my relationships would improve after, a lot of people said they were worried about me and I put in the time and effort to be better. I'm trying to socialize and find more people again but alcohol is basically the centerpiece of social gatherings so I can't go to most of them for long. I don't know what I'm doing anymore.

Unity Software to cut 3.8% of staff in 'company reset' web.archive.org

By Anna Tong SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Videogame software provider Unity Software will eliminate 265 jobs or 3.8% of its global workforce and end an agreement with a digital video effects company founded by the “Lord of the Rings” director as part of a “reset,” the company said on Tuesday. The move follows a tumultuous period for the San Francisco-based company, which makes a software toolkit used by many videogame developers including the maker of the popular “Pokemon Go” mobile game. In September, the company tried to impose a new “runtime fee” pricing policy, which charged new fees to its game developers if certain revenue and install thresholds were met. Following a developer revolt and a steep dropoff in share price, the company revamped the new fees. In October, Unity CEO John Riccitiello retired, and the company appointed former IBM president Jim Whitehurst as interim CEO and president and Sequoia Capital partner Roelof Botha as board chairman. Tuesday’s announcement includes termination of the professional services piece of an agreement Unity struck with movie director Peter Jackson’s visual effects company Weta FX in 2021 after Unity purchased the technology and engineering division of Weta FX. As a result, 265 employees whose jobs are related to the agreement will be laid off, the company said. The company has said its total workforce was around 7,000. In addition, Unity will shut down offices in 14 locations such as Berlin and Singapore, pending employee consultation in some countries, and significantly reduce its office footprint for the remaining offices, including in San Francisco and Bellevue, Washington. Unity will no longer mandate that employees work from offices three a days a week and will reduce “full in-office services” to three days a week in most locations, the company said. More changes are in store to “refocus” Unity’s business, Whitehurst told Reuters. “While no additions have been finalized, it’s clear that we will reduce the number of things we are doing overall,” he said. New instance can't upload images

I just got a new instance up and running (more or less) and am currently running into errors when I try and upload images `SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data`. I get two of these popping up in the lower right whenever I try and upload an image. I found [this GitHub post](https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3349) which ends up linking to this [Stack Overflow post](https://stackoverflow.com/a/14358928). I'm still pretty new to setting up servers, and the ones I have set up have all used Apache so this is very foreign to me. Could I get some help troubleshooting if I'm actually running into the issues described in the linked posts or if I'm hitting something else? And if so, could I get help tracking down all the config files in the Lemmy install?

I'm like 10 tutorials deep and on day 3 of trying to figure out what is going on with Postfix. There are so many words and acronyms being thrown around I don't even know what I'm looking at anymore let alone knowing what the right questions to ask would be. Very likely I'm going to nuke my droplet this weekend to make sure I have a fresh start with no half-baked solutions competing with each other. Would someone be willing to set up a time with me this weekend on Discord or something and baby step me through how to get this thing up and running?

    Train station naming schemes

How do you all name your train stations? I was using load/unload for a while but wanted shorter names. So I switched to in/out where "in" is a resource input that is deposited by train. This causes some confusion though people thinking "in" means putting stuff in the train. I've also been floating the idea of on/off for putting things on or taking them off the train.

How to delete image from server, accidentally added one during creation of a post

I was trying to copy/paste some things into the body section while making a post. I accidentally pasted a screenshot and it seems to have loaded it onto the server, made a link and everything. I don't want to add to server overload by having a dead, unused image on here. Is there a way to find that image from my profile or something and remove it? It isn't even part of my actual post and honestly seems like a great way to quickly mess up server storage if someone had malicious intent.

[Resource] Obsidian and Obsidian HTML are my go-to tools for writing and sharing setting notes

Like the title says, great tools for hosting world notes (or really any kind of notes) in knowledge graph style. - Obsidian: https://github.com/obsidianmd - Obsidian HTML: https://github.com/obsidian-html/obsidian-html I have all of my world notes set up in a private repo for safe keeping. Whenever I update them I run Obsidian HTML locally and move the new files over to my server. Next step will be to make a Jenkins build job to automatically build/host the latest notes when I push to the repo. Obsidian is great for my style of note taking where I end up being all over the place and want to set up 'figure this out later' pages. It is also very easy to change the names of things on the fly and update across all my notes.
