I run Linux on all home computers, MacOS on work devices.. if AMD's 8x40 APU turns out about as good as it's rumoured to be (efficiency-wise) I'll probably try to get my company to get me a Framework laptop with that and then all will be well.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure Steam Deck is having an effect here. Not only do they seem to sell well on their own but people may get ideas when they see Linux-based device running games decently..

Depends on conditions and what kind of birds but you'd need a pretty long lens (like in 300mm-600mm range), decent autofocus and enough image quality to resolve feather detail... it's pretty tall order for a phone. I hear some people like Moment add-on lenses on their phones but I don't think they make long telephoto lenses. Most of the long lens add-ons I've seen are of really questionable quality..

Back in the day Discord's advantage was that it provided a way for people to set up a voice communication server with push-to-talk without any technical knowledge and for free. I don't know how they're ahead of competition now.. I don't know what their killer features are.

I use it occasionally but there are a few problems that always drive me away . 1) I have muted all the servers but I still get occasional sound notifications and just cannot find any source for them, might be a bug 2) there is no global notification history. To me that seems like a must-have feature and I don't know how people stand to use discord without it 3) ui feels very clunky. To me it seems like I spend way too much time navigating through the ui and searching for things. For example, scrolling through the servers and trying to remember which icon was which. Anyway, I would be interested in hearing why people do use it besides everybody being there.

Well, maybe my perspective is skewed because metal music is popular around here in Finland and "everybody" knows Children of Bodom, Opeth and Amorphis, many know Arch Enemy, Dark Tranquility, Amon Amarth. But most have never even heard the name Be'lakor..

For me, it depends on where the crunch is.. like HERO is pretty crunchy but it's very front-loaded and it's pretty smooth during the play. Also it's a bit different these days because I play most of my games through Foundry VTT which takes care of a lot of crunch if the support is good.. That said, I'm leaning toward more narrative systems these days, not because of lack of crunch but because I think they make better use of TTRPGs' advantages (over say computer rpgs) and because it's easier to model characters and stories in them. I think I'd really like a narrative crunchy game :D

A friend of mine used to play Stratovarius - Black Diamond and Children of Bodom - Lake Bodom occasionally on car rides and I had to look them up .. and then more stuff like it. Melodic death metal is still my favourite genre :)

Tuosta nimenomaisesta ratkaisusta en tiiä mutta minusta on ollut hassua kun ihmiset esittävät vesitiiviyttä syynä vaihdettavien akkujen katoamiseen kun yksi harvoja vaihdettava-akkuisia puhelimia mitä Samsung tekee on XCover -sarja, joka on nimenomaan tarkoitettu rankkoihin olosuhteisiin.

Tässä nähdään ettei ole oikeasti haluja lisätä koulutetun työvoiman maahantuloa. Ja/tai sitä ettei taaskaan ymmärretä miten ihmismieli ja prosessit toimii. Kyllä itteä ainakin ahistais aika reippaasti tommonen ja miettisin parempia vaihtoehtoja :-|

Ite en oo havainnu kyllä tämmöstä toimintaa että ihmiset ottais huvikseen saikkua. Vituttaa vaan kun itellä on stressiin reagoiva migreeni joka on monesti just sellasta että päivän on kanttuvei ja makaan pimeessä huoneessa ja odotan että menee ohi. Voin sanoa että ei vähennä stressiä ajatus siitä että niiltä päiviltä sieltä täältä ei sitten tule palkkaa. Tää on vaan tämmöstä kyykyttämistä.

Suurempi osa käyttäjistä(/ihmisistä) ei tosiaan ymmärrä/välitä periaatteellisista ongelmista, joten veikkaan että 90% käyttäjistä pysyy redditissä. Arvelen vain että loput 10% olis ollu tärkeempi pitää kuin Reddit ja muut käyttäjät olisivat arvanneet.. Redditissä riittää kävijöitä ja pörinää, mutta laatu tulee laskemaan kun pioneerit, puuhaihmiset, innokkaat kokeilijat yms. lähtevät, perustavat pieniä mutta elinvoimaisia yhteisöjä muualle.. Ja elävät siellä onnellisesti kunnes massat lopulta parin vuoden päästä heräävät siihen että hei noilla tuolla näyttää olevan hauskempaa, mennään sinne.

Näyttää ihan jonkin verran olevan näitä "ei kiinnosta mitkään periaatteet, mulla toimii" -väkeä kommentoimassa tuohon ketjuun.. ne on tuskin ainakaan tänne siirtymässä ja sanoisin että parempi niin. Itellä lähti reddit-sisältö silppuriin ja koitan olla mukana rakentamassa tänne niitä yhteisöjä joita kaipaan. (paskuuttaminen on hyvä termi :D)

Yup, that's one of the annoying consequences. Another is that people need to post videos much more frequently to get promoted. Both lead to information-sparse content.

Yup, a lot of my time got wasted on YouTube.. I watched "educational" and "interesting" videos but I have to say that many of the creators got caught into enshittification process too.. I would do well with 95% reduction in watch time. However, if they start a real war against adblockers.. 100% reduction will it be.

I think they were lamenting the fact that people don't seem to recognize why capitalism's inherent forces tend to cause enshittification of services. That it's not just a bad CEO that causes this but the inevitable squeeze that will happens where user good-will is exchanged for money. This is why hopping from privately owned central service to another will not solve that problem.. but decentralized services that are not owned by any single agent (and therefore can't be bought, can't be turned into value for investors) can resist it.

It's good to see people here, good to see people protesting and taking control. So, I welcome you (if that amounts to anything :D) However, I wish people also take stock and ponder why social media service after another turns into crap.. :)

I tried it.. realized that the format pretty much precludes anything I'm interested in watching and that was it. Clearly I'm not in the target audience.

I'm a bit confused.. I thought you just said that your second example involved more typing. Anyway, I don't care much for that characters typed argument either.. but I do care about readability and "noisy" syntax or repetition tends to make reading/skimming harder.

I haven't looked but I don't think there's that much custom code in Doom Emacs for example.. it's mostly something that sets sane defaults and glue over disjointed points.. most of my slowdowns have come from different kinds of parsers etc and native-comp compiles all the packages which speeds up load / execution times.

And here's one that defaults to nothing but involves less typing:

Yup, made the move too a couple years back. It's honestly quite amazing how robust/hackable they have managed to keep Doom.

That's been my weapon of choice for a couple of years as well. It's already quite snappy but running doom on nativecomp-enabled Emacs made it even more so :)

If you use Firefox, password manager stores its data encrypted (not in plain text). You can also turn on the master password requirement if you like.

Recent conditions have been almost a perfect storm. I really hope that the time is right and all this will lead to a broad enough grassroots movement that'll have a serious impact on the exploitative system.

I watch a lot of stuff that I guess isn't really favored by the algorithm and would probably do well elsewhere but are there because Youtube is just so all-encompassing like.. category theory for programmers, video manual for my synth, some very specific DIY-stuff (like how to scrape oboe reeds). But I've replaced most of my time on Youtube with listening to podcasts and reading..

I think they have a marketing failure because it's not a startup it's a petition letter.
