I haven't powered it up in several years, but I keep an old Windows XP machine with my DAW software on it. I just always ran it offline and moved files with a thumb drive. That said, I never did try a native Linux solution.

I can respect and agree with that. I'm also not asking anyone to start buying Biden merch or waving flags or anything like that; just asking people to see the bigger picture here.
Personally, I don't think he's been a bad president, all things considered. I voted for him last time expecting him to be a seat filler that wouldn't make things worse, but he's genuinely surprised me with what he's been able to get done, especially with the current Congress.
Would I like to see someone more progressive at the helm? Absolutely. But that's sadly not the world we live in right now or a choice we have at the moment.

Yeah I'm not as much of a fan of PopOS as I thought I'd be. I have it on my daily driver laptop, and every system update seems to introduce some wacky bug/glitch or another. Nothing major, just random small annoyances that usually get fixed in the next update.
It dual boots Pop and Debian, and Debian performs flawlessly. It's a Thinkpad, so Linux support has always been fantastic. I'm thinking of just dropping the PopOS partition and going back to my original love, Debian.

Unless you run some really niche software or are a heavy gamer, you'll likely have no problems and enjoy it. Most software that you need for daily use has a FOSS equivalent that's equal or better. Usually those are also available straight from the package manager (if not there, then most likely Flatpak).
Just stick with a well supported distro like Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, or PopOS, and it'll be super easy.
I'm actually looking forward to the perfectly good Linux boxes that are bound to be popping up at yard sales or on ebay once that happens.

Republicans, who have already shown us their plans if they win, are unified behind Trump. That's who they're backing, they vote in droves, and put no further thought into it than cheering for their favorite sports team.
The other side, us, are splitting hairs, nitpicking, and generally letting perfect be the enemy of good at every turn.
All these accounts dredging up every article that fits their "Biden Bad" agenda (yes, agenda, based on post history) are not helping anything. They're not suggesting any alternate candidate that can win. They're not suggesting contacting elected representatives to support/oppose specific polices. They're not doing anything other than spreading FUD.
Every time someone in the comments asks one of them to recommend a candidate that has a chance, they either go radio silent or move the goalposts.
The constant bombardment of "Biden Bad" posts (but adding "though I guess we should vote for him" in the fine print that no one reads) seem tone deaf at best and actively encouraging voter apathy at the worst. Whether the posters are actual trolls or misguided progressives is completely irrelevant.
And no, I'm not saying we can't or shouldn't criticize members of our side (that's one of our defining characteristics versus the cult of the other side), but when it's a constant drone of "vote uncommitted / third party" it's hard to not see those as bad faith and working against the greater good.
Like it, understand it, or believe it or not, the reality of the situation is we have a two-party first past the post system, it's pretty much already guaranteed to be Biden v Trump, and one of them has already laid out plans to be a dictator (cough not biden cough) . Those are our choices.
Pick a side or get out of the way. The opposition is unified, and we should be too.

I naively thought OP (and the similar accounts posting similar patterns) would shut up and get on board as we approach the general, but looks like they're going to be banging the "tHiRd PaRTy" drum all the way to a Republican victory. And then all the things they've at least pretended to care so much about are going to get much, much worse.

WebDAV has been around a lot longer and does many of the same things as object storage. It also has support for random access read/writes where object storage requires you to download, edit, and re-upload the whole file. Seems like a no-brainer if you wanted to offer cloud storage to customers. I thought maybe supporting large uploads was the draw, but WebDAV can support chunking, so you don't need to allocate extra server resources to accommodate large files. I use both daily, and WebDAV just seems like it does everything better: object storage feels like throwing files in a junk drawer and WebDAV more like an organized filing cabinet. Aside from Nextcloud and a few FOSS applications, the only big thing I recall that adopted WebDAV was Frontpage back in the day. So, what am I missing? What makes object storage so compelling that it became ubiquitous while WebDAV is practically a legacy spec?

The screenshot doesn't make it apparent, but the user self-deleted that account. As a user, it's annoying when there's good conversations in the comments that just disappear forever. Got suckered into helping a non-profit with their web presence, and of course, it was a Wordpress site (at least it wasn't a Facebook page). Everything about WP is mildly infuriating at best, just regular infuriating at worst. Everything. If you know, you know. It's like they tried so hard to make it "easy" to use that it went full circle into a fuster-cluck of unintuitive and clunky everything. With every facet of the experience being an upsell, is there a tier where it's just not horrible to use? Specific examples: - WYSIWYG editor doesn't match the preview - Chasing the scroll point in the outline when moving elements - Can't edit block properties after they're added - Everything is a damn upsell - Want to remove the Wordpress footer? Upgrade to a paid plan (does not specify tier) - Okay, I've updated to a paid plan that meets our needs. Please remove the footer please. - "Oh, you have to have a plan two tiers up to do that" - General clunkyness - Only supports Apple map embeds which cannot find any of the addresses I need to enter - Cannot embed a Google map properly (doesn't support percentage widths for the iframe element so I can't make it responsive) - Changing the column widths on a layout grid block never releases the slider, so you have to mash keys until *something* else selects that locks it roughly where you want it.
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.nz/post/6893317 Two Peruvian women accused of drug trafficking got more than they bargained for on Wednesday when a romantic gesture turned out to be a police raid leading to their arrests. Police footage of the raid showed a giant teddy bear holding up gifts outside the women's home, while another officer held a heart-covered sign reading "You are my reason to smile". One of the women rushed down the stairs to receive her offering. But love can be deceiving, and the cuddly bear quickly sprang into action, tackling her to the ground. The second woman was arrested inside.

Of all the random Wikipedia articles I stumble upon, this one definitely had me saying, "wait, what?" more than once. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_3D_Noah%27s_Ark > The game that would eventually become Super 3D Noah's Ark was originally conceived as a licensed game based on the film Hellraiser, a movie that [Wisdom Tree](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisdom_Tree) founder Dan Lawton was a great fan of. Wisdom Tree acquired the game rights to Hellraiser for $50,000, along with a license to use the Wolfenstein 3D game engine from id Software, believing that the fast, violent action of Wolfenstein would be a good match for the mood of the film. > Eventually the Hellraiser game concept was abandoned due to several issues: the hardware of the NES was found unsuitable because of its low color palette and the addition of a co-processor would have made the cartridge far too expensive for consumers. ... In addition, the management at Wisdom Tree decided that developing and publishing a horror-themed game would clash with their religious, family-friendly image.

There's no hard limit on the number of people you can block in Lemmy (unlike the alien site which assumes only 1,000 assholes exist in the world). If the TikTok-ers mostly come from one instance, defederation would be swift. Barring that, I would just engineer a solution since my instance runs a lot of custom frontned/backend components already.
TL;DR: I'd notice it long enough to get annoyed, but it would be an easily solvable problem.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. I currently drive a hybrid and am looking to upgrade in the next 1- 2 years to either PHEV or full EV. In either scenario, I envision most of my charging will be done at home. However, if I go full EV, I will eventually need to charge in public. [I've read it varies from charging network to charging network](https://blog.evbox.com/electric-car-charging-payment), so I figure I'd ask EV owners what their experiences are like. I *really* don't like the idea of relying on an app or monthly subscription or anything like that. So, is a debit card more or less guaranteed to be accepted, and if so, are the rates significantly higher than some kind of membership option? Edit: In the US if it matters.

Years ago, after Xbox Live for the original Xbox shut down, there was a program you could run on your PC that would connect over the internet to others running that software. It would emulate an Xbox and do matchmaking and your local/physical Xbox would see the others through the program as "local" using the system link option for multiplayer games (Halo, etc) For the life of me I cannot remember what that was called, and my Google-fu is failing and only returning results for console emulators. Some friends from college and I dug out our old Xboxes, and we want to setup remote play for Halo 2 and have a nostalgic "Shotguns on Midship" night. Update: Solved. Thanks, mouse@midwest.social. XLink Kai was the software I was thinking of.
I've been noticing an occasional sewer smell in my bathroom, and finally realized it's only present when it's below freezing outside. As soon as the weather warms up, the smell goes away. For reference, my house was built in '55 and the toilet is plumbed into the original steel sewer line. There are no leaks (everything below the upstairs bathroom is easily accessible from the basement), and no issues flushing. House has sewer service, so no septic tank to worry about. Could it just be the steel pipe contracting in the cold? If so, would replacing the wax seal address the issue? Additionally, if that's plausible, would putting a space heater near the steel pipe help by warming it back up (temporary solution to address the smell). Basement is finished and conditioned, but I don't heat it for comfort unless we're spending time down there. I'll just deal with it being 60 degrees when I'm doing laundry. If not, any other ideas? That's my only hypothesis, so hoping to get some feedback. I've got no problem calling in a plumber and plan to do so, but I'd just like to have an idea of what I'm up against so I can set expectations for pricing and such. Edit: Have ruled out dry drain traps. Current plan is to just let the plumber figure it out and hope for the best. Thanks for the suggestions.
