science science We’ve Got Depression All Wrong. It’s Trying to Save Us.

  • loopy loopy 2 weeks ago 100%

I have to somewhat agree with the author. My experience and understanding of depression is that it is more of a (sometimes very persistent) symptom than an underlying cause. Ideally, we would all have the guidance to deal with depressing scenarios, but similar to dissociation during trauma, our mind defaults back to disconnection to limit the pain.

I’m not saying this is every case, but I do think as a society we could view depression more as a coping strategy, and try to replace it with healthier practices. After time, it takes more time and effort and support to replace those coping strategies, but that is essentially what psychotherapy does.

I think too often in the modern world people tend to just shrug and say “this is who I am,” instead of trying to improve their coping skills and quality of life. Like another commentor mentions, this becomes a feedback loop of depression feeding depression and takes immense support and effort to curve and should absolutely not be shamed.

Have you used the cloud service for photo backup? I currently have an iPhone and it sounds neat to switch to bundling Proton and dropping the iCloud subscription.

I’d probably just use Proton’s mail app on mobile. It’s actually pretty snappy and intuitive, and it has always had the basic features I need.

Spot on. It’s my primary working surface right now and will be mostly for ripping when I have a full bench. Sitting on it, my weight provides the stability, but I can pick it up and take it outside or anywhere.

I’ll use the joiners mallet to knock together joints and to motivate my chisel.

Yeah it’s convenient for some things, but not ideal for others. I might modify it by putting pegs into each leg to hold them in better, because the actual joints arent that good. Besides adding a crochet hook, some people add an attachment to hang down from the edge with the crochet hook to support longer boards with pegs, but I won’t know if that’s necessary until I use it more. The holdfasts dont grip well because it is so shallow, so I’m going to add some scratches to the holdfasts to see if the texture gives some better grip.

I’ll also add a couple more holdfast holes somewhere in th middle for sawing. Near the end of the bench where they are now, the saw sometimes bumps the leg that is protruding outward.

low Roman bench and joiners mallet postimg.cc

I made a low Roman bench out of a piece of bowling alley that was being trashed and some old fence posts. I fitted the legs with slanted mortise and tenon joints and realized that was a lot of work, so I did the other side with bored out round mortise and tenons, which was somewhat easier. There is a notch in place of a full vice, and I mad e a “crochet hook” attachment for wedging up large boards for edge planing, but it split so I’ll need to figure out a different grain direction. More pics: * [square mortise](https://i.postimg.cc/YqB3377N/IMG-8424.jpg) * [round mortise](https://postimg.cc/WDr0szkP) * [wooden bench dog](https://postimg.cc/hQ4m803S) * [notch vise](https://postimg.cc/ftfX0PC2) * [round mortise needed a peg](https://postimg.cc/XrBCgqxy) * [crochet hook](https://postimg.cc/dL1dL4y6) I also made a new joiners mallet. My other one’s handle broke because it was pretty soft. The head is a chunk of 3” thick red maple that I’ll use to make my full-sized bench top, and the handle is something dense (oak?). I had to slim down the end of the handle so it would fit through the head. I cut the curve of the handle by cross-cutting lines and then chunking them off with a hatchet and smoothing it off with a spokeshave. I didnt have an actual mortise chisel, so I essentially had to chisel out the whole mortise. I plan to go back and clean up the fit a little better and smooth out the edges later. I’ll use both of these to make a larger bench to work with, and use the Roman bench as a sawhorse. According to the state’s historical society, Jacques Marquette first described the region in 1673. The cursive M was later misread as a W by Rene Robert Cavelier. The meaning of the word was discussed: > However, the hypothesized meanings were derived incorrectly from the Ojibwe language, not Miami, because the latter had not yet been mastered by modern scholars. > Another possible origin for Wisconsin's name was [mentioned to WPR](https://www.wpr.org/how-did-wisconsin-get-its-name-well-its-complicated) in 2019 by University of Wisconsin-Green Bay elder in residence and member of the Menominee tribe, Napos. He said he "was always told the name came from the Menominee word 'Wēskōhsaeh.'" > The first part of that word come from the word "Wis-cu," which Napos told WPR means "something good." The ending of "Wēskōhsaeh" is locative, meaning "'a good place to camp,' or 'to make a clearing' or 'to basically live.'"

    TIL of Waldorf schools en.m.wikipedia.org

I mentioned to someone how I think there should be more hands-on learning in schools and he told me to look up Waldorf schools. Very interesting to say the least. Rudolf Steiner had very unique philosophies, some very weird or outright morally questionable, but some that I think were an appropriate reaction to the “thinking in the box” that is often dolled out in school. The parts I agree with are that kids are taught engagement with crafts (eg, carving), music and creativity, an inquisitive exploration (reminds me of the Socratic approach), and an adaptive progression of subject matter that is based on the students’ individual levels. It reminds me a lot of the origins of the liberal arts being the skills a free person needed to engage the world, which included music and logic/rhetoric. The parts I don’t really agree with are the pseudo-spirituality, the pseudo-science, and the racist parts of Steiner’s theory. I think I would need to do a thorough investigation of the specific school before I would consider sending my student there, but the philosophy definitely seems to meet some needs of students that are otherwise under-developed in the current school systems. What are your thoughts?

I think that’s a great way to put it, “Platonic ideal love.”

And I somewhat agree that there is a use for distinguishing from romantic love, but I think it would be even more helpful if there were more descriptions for the different kinds of love, like one for companionship love, loving a family member, loving a passion, etc. They somehow all get lumped together to “love.” Maybe that’s a limitation of English as a language too.

I agree, meanings change throughout time. I guess I should have asked should it mean something different? To say platonic love only means non-romantic seems like it belittles the richer meaning of Plato’s views of love as being able to love a passion or eventually beauty itself. How do fully realize to love the concept of beauty itself without first experiencing romantic love? I don’t think a person needs to experience romantic love to experience beauty initially, but to achieve the most developed version of love that Plato describes, how could a person appreciate that without experiencing it?

Reading more about Plato’s thoughts about love, I think I understand what you mean; most of what he described was about the love of questioning and thought. I guess I’m just trying to read between the lines that even if Plato did not value romantic love as highly, is it not a part of “beauty itself”?

I’m learning about history of western philosophy and understand that Plato’s Symposium describes his theory on love and that a person initially desires physical love, but then eventually grows to love things that feel fulfilling, and eventually love the ideal form of beauty itself. So I would guess most people are looking for an alternative way to connect about common interests. And because it’s not the easiest path for social media, I would guess most people have a desire for agency/self-reliance.

And because the whole Fediverse seems to be a different way of approaching social connecting, it takes a little more understanding of computer technology, so I would also guess most people have a least a higher than average affinity for computer technology. Linux and Programming Humor are larger communities.

That said, I have enjoyed a somewhat active participation about woodworking, gardening, jokes, news, medical updates, etc. Like mentioned in another comment, the different instances will have somewhat different norms and practices.

It’s immensely helpful when when caring for someone not well, and can be much more stressful without one. I have had dying, incapacitated patients wait weeks for guardianship or POA-HC to be processed before care can be changed to comfort measures, because they did not have one on file.

Get one from the hospital you would likely go to, fill it out, give them a copy, keep a copy, and give a copy to who you list as a decision-maker. You do not want to add the stress of logistics to an emotionally difficult time.

I think as a society we should embrace death more. Pretending it doesn’t happen just makes things worse when that reality of mortality unwaveringly stares you in the face.

The handle and head were each laminated and the handle was mortised in, wedged, and glued. I rounded out the handle with a spokeshave and rasp. There are plenty of things I could have done differently, but I’m just glad I pushed myself to finish it. And now have a fairly heavy-duty mallet, so I dont need to swing on the chisels as hard. I can’t tell if I’m sharpening incorrectly or if my file is just worn out. Is there a way to tell? I read somewhere to replace after like five sharpening a but that seems really short.

Oh man, I have many many written down. I quickly found out that there are many schools of thought for approaching woodworking, so it’s helpful to think about what you want to make and what you like or dislike as you try different things. I decided I wanted to go the sharpening route, as opposed to continually buying electro-hardened blades, and I wanted to use as simple as tools as I can learn how. This ends up being axes, chisels, saws, and I did get a hand-crank grinder from 1910 for those heavy grinding situations.

I almost always have the Mortise and Tenon podcast on as I’m doing things. Joshua and Mike’s discussions really resonate with me and the philosophical elements really prompt some introspection. Joshua has two books that I’ll probably get soon. Otherwise, I bought Sharpen This and the Anarchists’ Toolkit; anything from Lost Art Press is probably worth the money.

As far as channels, Matt Estlea has many great videos for the essentials of sharpening and good form for chiseling and sawing. He also has other videos that I would consider “optional” but I did end up making his sharpening block stop, because it makes sharpening quicker. I may try to do free hand honing though, since the heavy cambre is difficult with a honing guide.

Paul Sellers has so many great videos. I especially loved him making a bench without having a bench. So many people show you how to make things already having many other tools and setups.

James Wright (Wood by Wright) has some really good videos and offers honest opinions. Beavercraft has some nice simple ones for getting started with carving. I haven’t explored one for tool restoration yet; if you have any that you suggest, I’d be happy to hear them. I eventually want to just make my own wooden planes.

That sounds like a unique experience. When I had a running coach for a short while, he said I should curl my toe down as I pull my leg back. The lack of exercising that bottom foot muscle often contributes to flat-footedness. This wasn’t probably an issue when people walked barefoot because we naturally dug into the earth for traction.

Do your feet ever get sore?

I can relate with the passion for learning. I think that is so invigorating. Since you like physics and reading, if you haven’t already, I would highly recommend Project Hail Mary and Artemis, each by Andy Weir. He is an astrophysicist, so his works occur how they would likely physically happen as we understand physics currently. Super neat but different plots for each.

Thank you. I wholeheartedly agree, learning to work with nature such as wood, instead of imposing our will on it definitely gives me perspective on considering our connection with nature. In the modern era, much of how we connect with nature is removed or sterilized.

I’m really glad to hear you sing. There are so many ways music and rhythm weave through our lives. I expect a follow up post if you Snow White like 20 birds onto your arms!

What do you really enjoy doing?

I recently started learning hand tool woodworking and won’t shut up about it haha. I found a few books and channels that are helpful and feel *real*. The more I do it, the more it’s apparent to me that many things around me are just distractions. It’s really nice to unplug from everything and make some things or practice using/sharpening my tools. Those little moments when something clicks feel weirdly fulfilling. What do you all enjoy doing? Have you found any new passions? What do you like about it?

I’ve enjoyed using Mango. It’s always been free but there’s a paid version now too. It dives right into useful conversation, but gives cultural context before, like formal/informal or when certain phrases are used. It has flash cards built between lessons to help with memorization and you can even record your pronunciation and hear/see the audio clip and how it compares to how you are saying it. It also has the ability to download lessons for offline use. I first used it because it was one of the only apps/websites that specifically taught the Levantine dialect of Arabic not found on other apps.

[bug?] time on posts are different

I first just want to say thanks again for putting the time and effort that goes into making Lemma. It’s still my main Lemmy app. I just noticed after making a post a few minutes ago that the post in-app shows a much old timer. For example, I posted about 7 minutes ago (which shows on the browser) but Lemma shows 6h. The post prior to that one showed something like 12h when I first posted it. Is that maybe referencing when the server synced or how ever that works between instances? Those were both posts to instances other than my home one. Edit: I tried it on the same instance has my home instance and similarly got 6h ago

French press or borosilicate pour over?

I currently use a pretty nice Ninja coffee maker but I’m trying to simplify my coffee experience and found using a pour over coffee maker to be somewhat therapeutic. It may sound weird but I felt more connected to the coffee. So I think I’m down to deciding between a borosilicate carafe pour over with a 304 stainless steel filter and an insulated French press (also 304). I have never used a French press and I like the idea of having the insulation on either, but then I second guess myself and think “Can’t you just make more coffee if you need more or pour more hot water? Why do you need to keep it hot?” What are your thoughts about it?

TIL most ancient texts were read out loud and it was strange if someone read to themself https://lithub.com/rediscovering-the-lost-power-of-reading-aloud/

    > Sumerian cuneiform, Egyptian hieroglyphics, manuscripts in Aramaic, Arabic, and Hebrew, the illuminated Christian Gospels, the Talmud, the Koran—with these forms and collections of writing came the expectation that a person would read them out loud and would, in a manner of speaking, conjure their reality. > In his book A History of Reading, Alberto Manguel points out that Aramaic and Hebrew, the “primordial” languages of the Bible, draw no distinction between reading and speaking. The same word stands for both. Buddhism and Hinduism also give an exalted place to the spoken word. >The opening words of The Odyssey—“Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story”—make this clear: The storyteller is acknowledging at the start that the tale he tells is not his own, and that he hopes for divine assistance in telling it well. I think it is pretty interesting that people engaged with reading this way. The author of this article notes that it becomes a living story. This also had the benefit of reaching persons that could not read. I wonder if the content was remembered more vividly through both seeing and hearing the words.

Help with a simple and private phone

Hi everyone, I’m looking to possibly simply my smartphone setup. I would really love to keep it as a utility: phone, text, camera, GPS, web browser, notes, email, music player. Im think of switching to local NextCloud backup system as well. I currently have an iPhone but used to flash ROMs on Android phones, so I would be willing to do that again for more privacy options and less unnecessary changes to the OS. I have looked a little into it, and I’m wondering about getting a couple year old Pixel and putting GrapheneOS on it. I also searched a little and came across the Purism Librem 5 that has physical kill switches and sounds neat; a little pricy but I’d be willing to pay if it lasts a while and has good privacy options. What are your thoughts? Are there other hardware suggestions or setups that you like? The idea of FOSS is appealing because it seems like the money aspect seems to skew the priority of smartphones.

    Self entitled people exhausting

My wife and I share a vehicle and it needed to be dropped off at the shop. I brought my bicycle with me to bike back while it’s getting worked on. Biking back I tried not to take many traffic lights, but there are two that are inevitable. The lane splits into a right and left turn lane, so I take into the left lane. Someone honks behind me but I couldn’t tell if it was directed at me. I made the turn and someone pulled up next to me and said “You gotta signal buddy!” I said, “I was in the left lane?” It looked like he was texting and driving, didn’t see me until the last second and thought, “he should not have been in my way.” Fucking self-titled people throughout the day are just annoying. Get off your God damned phone and pay attention to the road, and don’t pretend like it’s someone else’s fault.

    Lemma 0.10 Review

**Things I Like:** * The new icon and color options are cool! * Multi-communities! * Still love the sepia theme and comment cascade color options. * The gif scrubber is always super helpful, and it feels a bit more tuned now and not so sensitive (some short gifs before were really touchy to scrub). * Hide Read button on Feed. * I’m not sure if it was present before, but the Mod, Admin, Dev tags are very nice. * Switching icon left/right/none and thumbnail size options for Compact View. * The Tap to Collapse toggle can be set to only comments. I like this because I never really need to close a post and accidentally close it trying to click a link in the post. * The Lemma scroll distance was a fun little finding. **Things that didn’t work:** * I could not logout of my account. I added a second account from another instance (I didn’t see a toggle to switch between, I think it just logged in “overtop” of my first account). I was able to remove the second account, but when I tried to logout of the original account, the Logout button didn’t log me out. [cue Sword Art Online - “Guys…there is no…Logout button…”] * Directly clicking the link/image from the Feed sometimes only marks it as read and does not actually open the post or link/media. * I think the No Subscribed in All option resulted in not loading my Subscribed posts at all. All and Local worked, but Subscribed only loaded when I disabled the No Subscribed in All toggle. * Switching to a sort other than the default for the Feed switches right back to the selected default sort. **Things to maybe change:** * Please please add text size options, at least for comments and posts’ text. * Disable Hide the Scroll Bars while in the menus. Sometimes I need to pull down quite a bit to get them back to exit the menus. * With Show Username at Top disabled for posts, they disappear from comments as well. * The Search is generally very nice and actually finds things I’m looking for. I think the filters could be a bit more clear though. If possible, maybe add No NSFW as a filter; because even with it de-selected, there are NSFW results that appear. *Thanks again* for all of the work that goes into this. It always amazing me what people like you can accomplish to share ideas and experiences with each other. Or cat memes or whatever ya know. This update makes it by far one of my favorites to use.

I have met a few people of different walks of life that I could tell did not and I have always used it, so I’m just curious. [Feedback]

After first trying Mlem, Memmy was my main Lemmy app for a good while, until I have been trying out some other ones. Coming back to using Memmy, I am pretty happy how well-rounded it is. For me, the most important things are functionality and readability. The customization and font options are very nice. I especially like having a theme like the Golden Hour that is easier on the eyes, and still get to pick a theme color! With the red, it gives me a *chocolate factory* vibe that I enjoy. The automatic reader mode for links is great for minimizing distractions on links, ability for switching feed link icons to the right is nice for being a lefty phone user, and the icon options are nice to have. The actual communities’ pages having the banner makes it feel more complete. The markdown editor seems well done and the Jump button is great for reading efficiently. The concise UI is very pleasant. And most importantly, the function of the things that are implemented are seemingly all working and are pretty snappy. Having the post click first before the going directly to the link is actually really nice, because half of the time I try to click a post on other apps and end up clicking a link to somewhere. Also, the saving of a post draft is nice, although I wish there would be some pop up message or small banner that would say so. Some things that could be improved: the favorite icon on the left list of communities does not seem to work, the Moderates feed does not load (but is a great idea), adding a *Mark above as read* button for the Feed would be very welcomed, the read messages do not appear in the Inbox, and lastly I tried to post this using the app and it only blinked and did not post. All of that said, I’m really happy about the balance of features and functionality and will stick with Memmy for a good bit.

Anyone have book recommendations for woodworking?

I’m working with only hand tools at the moment and also interested in the green wood work, with axes and such, and restoration of hand tools. I have the book Wood by Eric Meier, which is great so far for wood properties and identification. Are there any other books that you guys can recommend? Ones especially for green wood work, hand tool restoration, or hand tool identification and usage would be fantastic. There are many good videos and books out there, but sorting through which ones to try can take some time.

    Some thoughts for Hawbee-ists

Howdy Beehaw, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting lately and wanted to share some thoughts. I’ve been having these strange little epiphanies that many things today just don’t seem to fit right. Like at least in the US, everyone is working so hard just to get to this fictitious level of “success” that finally means “you’ve made it,” i.e. finally making enough income to have a decent work/life balance. But it from what I see, often people need to take out a large school loan to do that, pay it off seemingly forever, and there never seems to be a real point of “made it.” I took a vacation to much more relaxed, beachside spot and saw how the locals were living. Basically off the grid, get fruit at the little market, fix things or trade things. Everyone seem to have this collectivism that felt really connected. No one was money rich, but everyone had this peace about them that almost felt fake to me at first. And then I went down this whole rabbit hole of “why do I need money anyway?” I know there are certain things life that just costs money, but I’m coming to realize that I don’t think I need as much as I previously anticipated. The people that are “living” to me aren’t just enduring and saving for most of their life so they can sort of relax during retirement, they’re doing real things with *people* that make them happy. On a somewhat similar note, I wanted a hobby/activity that did not involve screens and I could continually learn. I ended up picking up hand tool woodworking and feel pretty nice to simplify a bit and get a little creative. I listened to a few podcasts that discussed the industrial era transition and the focus to “more efficient and lower costs,” which took some of the feel away from many things. The more I think about it, the more I think that industrial shift was not entirely beneficial. The hand tool working podcast said they’re “finding the ‘new’ old ways of living.” And that there is this natural desire for human connection. Restaurants have fake wood marks in the paneling to *feel* more authentic. Before machined things, there was more *intention* that went into goods. Anyway, in my sea of thoughts about enhancing human connection and intention, I thought about Beehaw. After the whole Reddit-geddon searching for an online community, I noticed that the communities here are respectful, open, and actually making human connections. It felt like a breath of fresh air. And I just want to say that I appreciate y’all.

Would it be possible to make swipe from the right to …uncollapse (expand?) the comment again. It’s one of those little things that would really improve the flow of reading through comments. On a completely unrelated note, the saved draft for posts is very helpful. I would normally have to cut the text, go back to whatever, and then paste it back.
