I think what would be interesting is to get everyone who self hosts this do part of the indexing. As in, find some way to split the indexing over self-hosted instances running this search engine. Then make sure "the internet" is divided somewhat reasonably. Kind of what crypto does, but instead producing the indexes instead of nothing.

It's a security thing. The HttpOnly cookie can't be stolen using XSS or something like that, while a bearer token must be stored somewhere where javascript can see it.

I've recently switched from Notion to Obsidian (almost anyway). But I still have to find a good way to sync. I tried nextcloud, but I couldn't get two way sync to work on mobile. I feel like €10,- a month for just sync is a bit much, and it (partly) defeats the idea of "the files are mine".
I wish the official sync software was available for self hosting (ie as a Docker container). Maybe even against a one time fee?
What solutions do others here use for syncing?

The crypto.com app. I mean maybe the reason is "security", but it takes like 10-20 seconds to view my credit card details.

I have also completed the survey. I think it would also be interesting to see how permanently people left reddit.
For example, I was Lemmy exclusive for a while, but started missing discussions on more niche subjects (aquarium and shrimp keeping, audiophile equipment), and have since gone back to reddit sometimes. But I also think many people that were part of the migration completely deleted their accounts.

For Google, yes that's true. Subscription model YouTube is working so that seems fine. But for other websites, such as news sites etc. I wonder if there is a feasible alternative because I don't want those sites to go away.

Will ungoogled chromium be able to patch this out?
Beside this, I'm still a bit worried about the state of the internet. Currently, ad revenue is what keeps a lot of sites online/free to use. Within the current economic system, is it even feasible to have privacy online?

I tend to wear Ecco's (not crazy expensive ones, more in the 120-150€ range). I quite like them in terms of being strong and looking good enough. But I think they last me about 2-3 years.

In the end, I decided that if I'm gonna buy new RAM for this server, I might as well take the opportunity and upgrade the motherboard and CPU as well.
I went with an i3-13100 (with IGPU) on a Asrock B760M-ITX/D4 motherboard. I also added an m2 SSD and 32GB of RAM forugood measure.

Well the judges are currently reviewing the evidence, so at best, the proof is not public yet. Suffice to say the prosecutors claim he appeared to be running a sex trafficking ring (https://www.reuters.com/world/romania-detains-ex-kickboxer-andrew-tate-human-trafficking-case-2022-12-30/). Which very often contains countless cases of rape.
He also "proudly" says he's a misogynist, woman are weak, etc (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-64125045). This its not something non-rapists tend to say.

I agree for serious/business applications. In my case, it's a home server that I and some close friends and family access. But it is indeed exposed (basically, my router routes port 80 and 443 to the server within the NAT).
To discuss the header-based firewall: the host is used by Traefik to determine which docker container to route (reverse proxy) the traffic to. So I don't see any obvious ways an attacker can really manipulate that to reach (in my case) the bitwarden instance. My main attack angle this protects if is there is some vulnerability in Bitwarden and bots are going around exploiting that. That way at least Traefik would already block them before they get to bitwarden.
But yes another service with a vulnerability could be exploited, then escape that docker container and you're in the whole server.
immortaly007 1 year ago • 100%
Something to keep in mind here. I am also using an IP white-list, but only on some services Traefik hosts.
So for example bitwarden is behind an IP white-list, but subsonic is reachable from any IP.
I think in that case it's not really possible (or doable) to write L2 firewall routes.
But if you want all traffic to port 80 on your server to be IP whitelisted, then a regular firewall would be good.

I personally am really into prog rock/metal, so here's a list:
- Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt 1
- Leprous - The Sky is Red
- Symphony X - The Odyssey
- Tool - Parabol & Parabola (or lateralus)
And for a complete genre switch 5. The Tallest Man on Earth - Tangle in this trampled wheat

From what I understand:
Pros of hosting your own instance:
- control over your data (privacy)
- performance (your instance is probably less busy/faster than lemmy.world, because it has to handle less people, so things load faster)
- it cool
Cons of hosting your own instance:
- maintenance
- federation cost increases for the network (i.e. All instances that host communities you are subscribed to (i.e. Lemmy.world), now need to send (federation) updates to your new instance). Note that as more people start using your instance, it is better for the network.
- you have to have a server running somewhere, which costs money's.
- you need a max 20 character domain name.

Good questions! I think I'm gonna have to upgrade the mobo as well. The current one is an ECS H61H2-I2 that has an 1155 socket.
The reason it's not keeping up is partly just that it's running a LOT of docker containers. But recently I've also added some that run headless chrome in order to check on website updates. That is just almost too much for it, it seems. It also has trouble with a plex transcoding so when I watch something where that's needed it's an issue 😅.
I have been running a little home server for a long time. It currently has an Intel celeron G1610, and a case that fits a Mini-ITX motherboard. It also has 3 big disks for data (NAS style), and one SATA SSD for the OS (Debian). But lately I've been asking a lot from it and it's not really keeping up so I'm thinking to upgrade. A relatively low power consumption is important to me. What CPU would you recommend?
