I was a child when I got Weird Al's autograph when he performed at an antique car show with the audience all sitting on grass. He was super nice.
Not only will I not spend money at Loblaws stores this month, I will also take $750 away from them by using my points. Even better is a promotion starts tomorrow that if I spend $60 worth of points, they'll add $20 worth back onto my balance.

Oh my kid doesn't play -- more or less just listens to me vent about EA while occasionally providing advice on how to make my Sims clothing/builds look better. :D
dialecticcake 6 months ago • 100%
Aww thanks for the comment. I'll share this with my kid as they're the one who came up with that one. :D
I'm so looking forward to once Paralives launches (Early Access to be sometime in 2025). Out of all of the competition, that's the one I'm looking forward to the most. I've been a Patreon supporter for years and love seeing their weekly updates.

I'm not interested in giving EA any more money or in their 2 hour long commercial. However, what I AM interested in is all creative talents who may create their own versions of what the Sims movie should be based on Sims 4 is actually like:
- No plot since it's up to you to think up the story in your head!
- Dining out for hours but the Sims can't sit down and actually eat a meal.
- Sims getting married when they've known each other for less than a day.
- A wedding with guests doing things like pushups or using their cellphones during the ceremony.
- A sim drops trash and now can't walk around it doing their 'hey you - help here - hand wave'.
- A crying baby needing food with two parents who desperately need to pee. The parents pass the baby back and forth, pee themselves, then one places the baby down on the floor in the puddle of urine.
- Famous Sims oddly appearing in every scene despite it not making sense for them to be there and oddities like wearing swimwear in snowy areas.

Better to create your own instance then.
It's about reducing risk not eradicating it and there's a huge difference in risk in being targeted for legal action due to hosting c/piracy (via caching/mirroring) than from a single piracy post in c/hellokitty.

Yeah I agree re opaque policies as if someone can get suspended for this, it would be nice if it was easy to find a policy regarding it. Thanks for your response.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 16%
Can you or Laurence link me to the policy saying one can't have both a paid and unpaid app? Or are you asserting Google didn't follow their own policy in this regard?
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 14%
Linking a message saying that someone was temporarily suspended doesn't sway me especially when I see apps on the store that have both paid and free versions of their apps like the app I linked earlier. If they and others can do it, why can't the dev for Sync?
Now if someone could share a link to a policy document by Google saying "You cannot have both a paid version and an unpaid version of an app on the play store" then I would be very happy to be corrected here and I will happily adapt my stance to support that. (Seriously, I don't mind being corrected -- I'd just prefer something official from Google.)
And so it's a deal breaker for me. And while I never used Sync for Reddit, I am thankful to all the app creators for helping the community often out of pocket and/or while being severely underpaid for years. And I hope this dev will do well financially with other users who have loyalty or different priorities than I concerning privacy and transparency.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 100%
I appreciate your response and I agree. And likewise nothing wrong with the dev making money and fans supporting that too. (I've seen complaints of some people who think all Lemmy apps should be free...and I feel that's very entitled demanding someone else's time and effort for free, but they too can just use free apps.)
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 28%
Sure and if the dev goes back on that we have no recourse to get a refund from Google or for Google to take any action towards the dev since the dev can just show we agreed to our data being collected/used regardless of whether we paid or not.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 66%
Cool. It's great that you did this.
However, my concern is there are no guarantees it wouldn't change and there would be no recourse for Google to give us a refund since from Google's standpoint we gave permission for the app to track our data regardless of whether we paid or not.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 100%
Yeah I was going to try the app based on all they hype but I noped out based on the trackers and that you have to accept all those permissions regardless if you pay. A dev saying they won't use the data of paid users -- that isn't the kind of thing I would expect to be enforceable when legally you've already signed permissions for the data to be collected/used.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 40%
Just because it was done like this before does not mean it's a good or transparent practice. I can appreciate though that those who used and loved Sync for Reddit may not care.
I have not used Sync for Reddit however but upon hearing about how much people love it, I wanted to give this app a try. My main point is it's not transparent unless their is a separate app for the paid version that lays out the permissions.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 100%
A post doesn't matter to me if I legally agree for that data to be collected as a requirement for installing the app.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 57%
I didn't find anything against having both a paid app and a free app in the Google's Policy Center.
While you can't have two apps called the same thing, e.g., both apps called 'your app name', you can have one app called 'your app name' and another app called 'your app name pro'.
I found advice going back years saying one just needs to create a separate project like this. And here is the most recent source I found saying the same thing and it goes further and lists apps that are on the store with both paid and free versions. I also did my own search and found this example: My Lightning Tracker & Alerts is free and My Lightning Tracker Pro is a paid app.
And regardless the dev saying they won't use the data from paid users -- that doesn't matter to me when legally by using the app I signed away permission for that data to be collected.
I don't like the lack of transparency with how the Google Play Store doesn't list the permissions if one pays for the app and instead only shows the permissions if one doesn't pay. I generally prefer it when devs release two apps -- a free version and a paid version. This way it's very clear on the Google Play Store what is being tracked in the paid app. This won't affect me personally, but I am curious if others would be more likely to use and pay for Sync if the permissions were more clear for the paid usage case.

I agree we all have the power of voting with our money. In my case, I hope that buying Sims 3 while at the same time NOT buying Sims 4 kits will help EA see that some people care about game play more than graphics...BUT EA wouldn't focus on kits and expansions with shallow game play if that wasn't making a profit so looks like I'm not part of their main demographic.
And now with announcements this week that Sims 5 will be a free to start game that works on mobile and will include lots of microtransactions (based on EA job posting 179118 which they'd since taken down but can still be seen here.... While it's too soon to know exactly how this will unfold, I'm really looking forward to Paralives and Life By You. Both to play those games but with the hope EA may lose market share and smarten up.
I'm Canadian but I expect this sale is on for other countries as well. This also means if you are in the USA -- the price for you to get the Sims 3 bundle is even lower. (EDIT: Note that the bundle doesn't include the Base Game which is required but can also be bought off of steam.) ![steam summer sale Sims 3 bundle](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/79a9eba9-6c3f-43e4-9f36-a416b9a1ef30.png)

Based on this source the issue has been fixed but the instance owners need to update to the latest version of Lemmy (v 0.18) which has the fix.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 100%
This is a known issue that has been fixed in Lemmy version 0.18. However some instances are still not updated to that newest version. Once your instance owner updates to version 0.18 this should no longer happen to you. Source

I switched from Tiddlywiki to Logseq 3-4 months ago and LOVE Logseq.
Part of the reason I didn't like Tiddlywiki was it kept everything in a single html file (including embedded images -- eww) which made it annoying to move information around. (Note there is an option to run your own server which gives you extra flexibility, but I wasn't interested in doing that.)
With Logseq, it's separate markdown file per journal entry / wiki page. I like the addons that are available as well as the queries, e.g., {{query (todo doing)}}
displays my do now tasks on my journal page.
Here's a Beginner's Guide on how to use LogSeq: YouTube video by Keep Productive

I've been using Logseq for 3-4 months now and I love it. It takes a bit of getting used too, e.g., using the journal, but one can also use it as only a wiki if they prefer.
For me, I tend to do a mix of both. For information I want more organized, I'll update the specific page and otherwise I use the daily journal.
I also really appreciate the queries and addons.
Here's an excellent in-depth guide for beginners on getting started with Logseq. YouTube Video by Keep Productive channel is here

I also don't know anyone who uses a Brita filter. I prefer tap water and have never had to boil it but I've mainly lived in large cities in southern Ontario, Canada.
However for a few months when I lived in a very small town (< 250 people) and the house I rented got water from a well -- at that point I drank only bottled water. The well water turned the shower wall orange so I really wasn't keen to drink it.

That's so dreamy that I created a feature request post linking to your comment. (I also did an @ you but not sure I did that right.)
@1993_toyota_camry@beehaw.org wrote a great post about Slashdot upvotes/moderation which I think makes a good feature request. Here is the opening line of their post: "this was something I loved about slashdot moderation. When voting, people had to specify the reason for the vote. +1 funny, +1 insightful, +1 informative, -1 troll, -1 misleading, etc." The post also mentions moderation as well so I suggest a full read.

Those were just two random examples. It would depend on whatever rules/guidelines each community owner makes.
Basically each community can have their own rules.
- Some communities may allow swearing and some may not
- Some may allow 18+ content and some may not
- etc.

To complicate things, you may also get different behaviour in different communities by the same user.
I think it's really at the community level that culture can be formed as at the all post level, we all just have our different preferences and that's fine. Also, our preferences may changed based on what we want/need in a day, e.g., one day we may want jokes while another day we may want tech support.
And so at the community level, community owner Bob may want no low-effort posts so he can put that into the rules, the mods can enforce that (be removing low-effort posts), the community can enforce it by only upvoting high-effort posts, and then a culture is formed which will draw other people who are into that.
And likewise the same for other culture/expectations.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 100%
Agreed. I think for now it's up to each community owner to set the expectations for their community and for the mods to enforce it. And so like Twitter...the quality of your feed will be dictated by whom you follow or in Lemmy's case which communities you join.

@angrylittlekitty@lemmy.one (comment link) had mentioned server costs from hosting duplicated content which was a great point.
I will also add, that people's time is also a finite resource. And so we can all help by being respectful of the rules for each community (save moderators time) and additionally in communities where you are asking for help -- avoid being a Help Vampire.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 100%
I think this is an excellent point (re: server overhead) and one I hadn't considered. Thanks for sharing that.
dialecticcake 1 year ago • 97%
I think it's natural to want the majority of posts to meet one's preferences but what one finds interesting/entertaining/etc. varies for each person.
I love diversity and choice and so I'm happy that each community can have their own individual rules/cultures and we can pick which communities we want to join. E.g., I wouldn't expect the same behaviour/rules/culture in a shit posting community compared to an arch linux community, but I'm glad both types of communities and content will exist.
We can collectively choose what kinds of unique cakes to bake and we can choose which cakes to eat too. :D
I appreciate being able to talk about different life sims in one place such as Sims4, Paralives, and Life By You. Thanks for creating this community. :)
