I was thinking urinalysis, which I was always told was ~30 days. It doesn't change the argument.

C-level or anyone in the company exempt? Do we monitor alcohol usage so closely? Would people tolerate it if we did? Federal law is the only reasonable basis for an employer to be testing for off the clock use of a drug that is legal or decriminalized in that state. Otherwise it's an invasion of privacy. And yes, it is, whether you tell me it legally is or not.

The moment there isn't federal law to lean on, I hope for and expect court cases predicated on the fact that there's no basis for an employer to care more about whether someone has smoked cannabis in the past thirty days than they do about whether that same employee gets blackout drunk every Friday and Saturday night - nor for that matter if the person responsibly drinks a couple beers after work some nights. (Or is someone pushing to detect alcohol use within the past 30 days as a reason to disqualify employment?)

Neither of those details of their lives speaks to someone's sobriety at work, and the basis for considering marijuana usage as somehow "worse" is rooted directly in the racist basis for policies enacted at the very start of cannabis prohibition.

The reality is that drug tests just like felony checks are very good filters for bad employees.

If this is true, drug testing should start at the CEO.

(from the article about the previous insane egg prices)

In absolutely unrelated news, eggs are suddenly incredibly expensive. A dozen "conventional" eggs are currently averaging $2.88, which is double what they cost a year ago. Supposedly, this is caused by a supply chain shock (an avian flu outbreak).

But – and this will shock you, I know – the single company that dominates the US egg industry, Cal-Maine Food (AKA CALM – ugh) is making record profits. Their Q3/22 net was up 65% from the year before. Cal-Maine's Q4-22 sales were up record-smashing 110% – $801.7m:

I had a guy on reddit WAAAY back when the war was just starting (when it was clear they would invade, but either had not yet or had literally just begun hours before) tell me all the Ukrainian citizens had to do was not resist and accept their Russian citizenship, the Russian soldiers were their ethnic bretheren, it would all be over nearly bloodlessly in three days, and of course Putin would not harm anyone if he didn't have to.

I was in disbelief that he believed this was true, or that he could believe there was any possibility they'd just stand by and let themselves be invaded. A month or so later I dug out the thread and called him out for his ridiculous bullshit (which had already been ridiculous bullshit when he first said it) and he gave me some version of "any bloodshed is the fault of Ukraine" and cursed me out.

I fathom neither how anyone sees Ukraine as anything other than the victim in this war, nor how anyone could ever have thought this would be quick and bloodless.

    As brief overview:

    • I generally only hear people in common conversation complaining that someone told them once that they heard someone say black people can't be racist. I don't think I've seen anyone in the wild claim it with a straight face - because many people use racism and bigotry interchangeably, and it's quite plain that anyone can be a bigot. However:

    • Racism by sociological definition is something that only the group in power can engage in (paraphrasing) so your problem, like most people who bring this up, is probably:

    1. You heard from someone that someone else said "black people can't be racist" one time, but have probably never actually been told "black people can't be racist." (Which is sort of multiple layers of irony, because if you define the word correctly, they can't, at least generally not in the US.)

    and/or

    1. You are using racism and bigotry as synonyms. Anyone can be a bigot, racially prejudiced, etc. Black folks can absolutely be bigoted and racially prejudiced towards others, just like anyone else can.

Here's a snippet of a definition from an into to sociology:

Racism is a stronger type of prejudice and discrimination used to justify inequalities against individuals by maintaining that one racial category is somehow superior or inferior to others; it is a set of practices used by a racial dominant group to maximize advantages for itself by disadvantaging racial minority groups.

The text goes on to say this doesn't preclude racial minorities from being prejudiced, bigots, etc.

And finally, and really this was all that truly needed to be said: In my experience, most of what people complain about online as "racism against white people" turns out to be nothing of the sort, and I'm personally doubtful MLK would have had a sympathetic ear for the common examples I see, either.

    Edit: Forgot the link.

Are you a KDE user? I switched from Gnome 3 when Plasma 5 was new, the very moment it seemed close enough to finished to expect reasonable stability. It was a huge departure from KDE4, and after trying literally every other DE to find happiness away from Gnome (that's all I'm going to say about that) over the course of several years, it was such a welcome relief.

Plasma 5 was not only a life preserver for folks bailing from Gnome, it also showed they'd learned from their own mistakes with KDE4, which many users felt was just as much a trainwreck as Gnome 3.

There's a lot going on under the hood with the change to QT6 as noted, and that alone merits a version number change, IMO. I haven't tracked a whole lot of specific features, but I know there are a lot of wayland refinements and HDR support coming, and I'm doubtful that the many pointieststick blogposts have been doing nothing but writing about bugfixes and menu changes, even if I haven't read every single one of them.

The general default look and feel maybe isn't being radically changed, but this is Linux, and more importantly KDE; we're all about theming and customization anyway, right?

Most importantly they aren't throwing out the baby with the bathwater. They did it (intentionally or not) with 4, and then (in my perception) they were forced to do it with Plasma 5 because of KDE4.

After living through the transition from Gnome 2 to 3, and KDE 3.5 to 4, then feeling the relief when Plasma 5 just absolutely crushed it, I'm very happy to see them upgrading the undercarriage and making things generally better instead of building it all from the ground up again.

Please help me.’” But instead of helping him, Bunge said, Aurora Police Officer Randy Roedema and his former colleague, Jason Rosenblatt, ignored McClain's pleas for help and told arriving paramedics that he had been resisting and had "crazy strength." Then the paramedics gave McClain a sedative "as he was drifting closer and closer to death," Bunge said in Adams County District Court.

Philips Hue will force users to upload their data to Hue cloud www.home-assistant.io

Today’s story is about Philips Hue by Signify. They will soon start forcing accounts on all users and upload user data to their cloud. For now, Signify says you’ll still be able to control your Hue lights locally as you’re currently used to, but we don’t know if this may change in the future. The privacy policy allows them to store the data and share it with partners. (more in the article)

Where are folks hosting images they want to post to kbin? Uploading images never works for me, and using imgur link gets no thumbnail.

My understanding is that the imgur thing is imgur's fault, but until the image upload functionality is working I don't really know what the best choice is.

Leopold FC660C - love it as much as the day I got it, but I have some questions

I have a Leopold FC660C which is my primary keyboard at home. I bought it lightly used several years back. It is bone stock, and I'm every bit as big a Topre fanboy as anyone you have ever met since owning it. (It prompted me to get a 980C and 104 key Realforce also) I consider the FC660C and 980C my endgame boards, as new purchases stopped in their tracks after that, BUT: The mini-usb port on the FC660C is a little bit wonky. I don't think the port itself is loose, I think there's a pin within it that's slightly out of whack. I often have to plug and unplug it several times before I can get it to receive power and work, independently of what system I'm plugging it into or what cable I use. Are there reasonable mods out there (either to do myself or pay a reasonable fee for someone to do) which could accomplish one or the other of these: * Replace with USB-C * Add wireless capability I learned awhile ago that folks often replace the controller boards, but I don't know the full spectrum of likely options, nor whether that is overkill to just get a properly functioning port. I'm also open to just having the mini-usb port replaced, but I figure if I'm going that route I may as well modernize it a bit. Any thoughts or opinions?

Hook an old FPS gamer up. Anyone else fondly miss "assassin mode" from Soldier of Fortune (2000)? en.wikipedia.org

I have never played another FPS that had a mode like this, and it was so damn fun and self-balancing. Having said that, I don't have the time to game nearly as much as I once did, so I have missed plenty of modern titles, even big ones. **Is there anything still being played that has a mode like this?** From the link, emphasis added: > > > > > > > Nash Werner of GamePro said of the PC version, "With its well-written storyline and thought-provoking missions, SoF's singleplayer will keep you thrilled for hours, **and you'll probably be playing the Assassin mode for months.** > > > > > > Edited to describe it: (from memory) In this mode, it's a lot like Deathmatch mode, except each player is assigned a target. You can only shoot your target or the person who is targeting you. You advance up the rankings by killing your target. The genius of the mode is that the more you are dominating, the more people will respawn with you as their assigned target. So pro player on the server is going to have essentially every other person on the server trying to kill just them very quickly, while a noob is never going to be targeted by more than one person. If you are having a day where you've really hit your A game, it's very, very satisfying, but it's still fun if you aren't having a great session. This is happening dynamically throughout the match as people respawn, so it's very fluid, and the balance shifts during the game continuously to keep it fun for everyone.

Deleting a post - is it generally broken or am I just unlucky?

I keep wanting to delete a post, and getting "We're currently working on resolving issues." Comment deletion seems to work fine. Anyone else able to delete a post?

A lingering question about Federation from a user perspective

Many of the subscriptions I'm making are to magazines that are coming from lemmy or other nstances because these are the ones making their way into my feed. Is there *any* downside to this in the fediverse? Is there any reason (technical or otherwise) why I **should** prefer magazines that are at kbin.social (or kbin.anything) or does it literally not matter at all? **Edited to add: Thanks for all the good answers, I get it now!**
