Crap, every day I see signs of how AI is polluting reality, when it could and should only be used to improve humanity.

Also, I'm starting to believe AI is effectively going to destroy or resize several jobs. For example, a friend of mine told me it asked ChatGPT to write several lines of code and it did so, maybe 85% correctly. He went through the whole code and could find mistakes and correct them. Anyhow, long story short, it would have taken his a lot of time to write them himself.

I think it's an imperfect movie with a great premise and cast. Overall, I enjoyed it a lot when it came out and I've rewatched it once, but I haven't felt it so memorable or quotable. Still, it was pleasant

Wait, if you can (or anyone else chipping in), please elaborate on something you've written.

    When you say

That means they can engineer a solution to any problem that has already been solved millions of times already.

Hasn't Google already made advances through its Alpha Geometry AI?? Admittedly, that's a geometry setting which may be easier to code than other parts of Math and there isn't yet a clear indication AI will ever be able to reach a certain level of creativity that the human mind has, but at the same time it might get there by sheer volume of attempts.

Isn't this still engineering a solution? Sometimes even researchers reach new results by having a machine verify many cases (see the proof of the Four Color Theorem). It's true that in the Four Color Theorem researchers narrowed down the cases to try, but maybe a similar narrowing could be done by an AI (sooner or later)?

I don't know what I'm talking about, so I should shut up, but I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable will correct me, since I'm curious about this

That's an interesting take, because it is a plausible origin story arising from an "implausible" one! What I mean is that, according to the (admittedly not well defined) "bounds" of my original post, mutants have a less believable origin story since they're just born with powers, but Deadpool becomes a superhero since he already lives in a universe where mutants and healing factors exist and so it makes sense they make experiments on it!

I didn't know Norman Osborn tried to kill Deadpool with a cure for cancer. That's a neat plot device!

I'm trying to answer everyone and you pointed out correctly something I didn't define well in my original post: I was trying to find either "believable" powers (in the sense of being well constructed) or "believable" origin stories. They didn't need to come from radioactivity only. The reason I was excluding mutants in my original post was that they have powers since they have a different gene, but that is a very "cheap" way of creating a superhero, since no other explanation is necessary!

Wolverine (as pointed out in the first answer to your comment) is born a mutant and later on given an indestructible skeleton.

Make no mistake: the post is not about superheroes being or not being cool because of their origin story or super powers. I really like Wolverine and Sabertooth!

These are all great answers. As discussed in another answer to a comment (the one on Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze), I agree that "believable" experiments gone wrong based on actual science provide a source of "believable" super powers.

On the other hand: Ghost Rider and Spawn have really nice origin stories which also place restrictions on what they can do not to make the characters god like.

That's a great and involved origin story. Jack takes the mantle though he wants no part in it and becomes a superhero to protect and avenge his family.

It's interesting to have superheroes who are born out of revenge, like the Punisher mentioned in another comment. I guess revenge is also part of the Spiderman lore, though it isn't involved in what makes him Spiderman in the first place (and also isn't shown acting out of rage, like the Punisher).

I admit to not knowing Starman enough so I don't know if he's shown acting out of rage (like the Punisher) or of justice (like Spiderman)

Your comment nailed perfectly one of two the things I was aiming at with my post which I realized wasn't as well defined as I was hoping (the other thing being a colorful or original origin story, even if the power is unbelievable).

The Phantom is a perfect example: he's got no superpowers, but he managed to create an immortality myth around himself which makes him scary to others. That's great!

Watchmen is a great answer! All characters are normal people, save for Dr Manhattan and, even if the source itself of his super power is "sketchy" (in that it involves a radioactive event that just makes it true, without real explanation), there is a long section showing us how he tried to reassemble himself very very slowly while learning how to use his new powers which makes for a great and detailed origin story.

Doctor Strange is also a great answer since it taps into something that people have believed existing for centuries (aka magic) and Stephen Strange goes on to study it to save his own hands. It's a great origin story!

Green Lantern is also awesome in that it's a very unexpected origin story with aliens from Oa and lanterns being used to give this incredible power. I would say it's unbelievable as a power (with respect to the restrictions I was thinking about in my post), but the origin story and lore is much more unexpected than so many other superheroes

That's right! In a sense, Batman is very grounded as a comic book in that several of the main characters (Batman and the Robins) all are well trained people but with no super powers, so they are believable!

There is another answer below about Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze which I also liked and commented on and which (coupled with your answer) points to how much of the lore around Batman is well constructed (that is, characters and villains have a "believable" and well thought origin story)

I really like this. It has a similar (but different) feel than the answer involving Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze (which at the end I was abstracting as "believable experiments gone wrong with unexpected but somehow credible outcomes").

In the case of para humans you're saying, powers are well constructed within the limits of the world they live in and are related to something traumatic (and not necessarily reversible) which gives them abilities related to the event.

I admit ignorance in their respect and will look more into it. Thanks!

Hawkeye and Black Widow are examples of what I was looking for, thanks! They are normal people with extremely good training.

Daredevil is one I was kind of ruling out in my original post since he gets his powers from chemicals spilled on him, so it feels a bit like a "deus ex machina" plot device, like being a mutant or an alien or touching something radioactive. EDIT: on second thought, you're right that it's known that if you (unfortunately) go blind your other senses somehow help you make up for the loss of sight and so it may be believable that by chance the chemicals he was wetted with could somehow heighten his senses, so actually Daredevil is more in line with what I was looking for than I initially thought!

Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze are amazing answers! Poison Ivy is "believable" in that she's grown immune to poison because the mix of herbs she's taken "could" have an unexpected effect and Mr Freeze too is awesome in that he's a scientist trying to save his terminally ill wife with cryogenics and somehow the experiment goes wrong.

Now you're also making me think about the very first episode of the Batman animated series where a scientist researching bats is turned into one.

Your answer suggests that a source of "believable" origin stories are experiments gone wrong, if the experiments are somehow well thought and resembling actual science

Edit: updated my thoughts on Daredevil after reading another answer on para humans in this thread.

Being a parody comic, no one (not even the characters of the comic book) believe he can be real since he's grown to become a god like creature simply by doing a fairly normal workout. That's right! Moon Knight is a former mercenary (so believable training) with split personality. Then he also receives power from a god. This is also "believable" in that he is bestowed power after making a pact.

Of course, the Punisher also fits the bill. He has no powers (like Batman) just lots of training and motivation

Fascinating read about a horrible tragedy by a complete idiot. I also learned such a way of scamming is called pig butchering.

I'm not making fun of scammed people and feel for them, but I'm stunned how person X from NYC could believe that person Y from Hong Kong would want to marry them by never having met them. I mean, I can't understand why you'd trust someone who you've never met and only been chatting to.

For example, if a real friend of yours had been a victim of email spoofing and the scammer started trading emails as your friend, then you'd be interacting with a "trusted" party and I can see it would be easier to fall for it, but these are random numbers from a country you've never visited (which no one can even certify even is the one they claim to be) and you start trusting them for no good reason.

There are tons and tons of scams, some much more subtle and/or targeted than others, but this stuns me in how generic and random it is (and how successfully it works)

What is a well structured origin story (or super power) for a comic book super hero?

Lots of superheroes are "children of the atom" in the sense that they derive powers from some sort of radioactivity (think Spiderman or Hulk or even Daredevil) while others are just born with powers without explanation (X-Men, Thor, Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman). Who is a superhero that is somehow grounded in reality, meaning that they could "potentially" make sense (either their origin story is believable, even if it has some obvious gap to make a super power happen, or their power is somehow limited or constructed in a "reasonable" way). I guess with these restrictions, Batman would be OK since he's got no superpowers, but he's insanely rich and therefore can both train himself and have access to sophisticated gadgets, but can you think of less obvious ones (even if they're minor characters)? Thanks for reading this! Edit: thanks for all the answers and apologies for the slow replies. I've had a couple of complicated days. I'll now go through answering you. Several people made me realize I hadn't been precise in what I meant and helped with their answers. I was looking for superheroes or superpowers that are somehow "believable" in that they're either constructed in an unexpected way or in a way that you could almost accept as plausible

True, but the feeling is that in general Voyager was hard to watch.

I rewatched TNG and DS9 several times from start to finish and almost skipped no episodes (though in later rewatches of DS9 I'm skipping the alternate universe ones since I can't bear them). I tried rewatching VOY and I just can't. Sure I can rewatch some of the awesome episodes from the show, but I can't watch it from start to finish since I find most episodes to be cringey (even if I like most of the actors and their characters, but something doesn't work when watching entire episodes).

Unrelated: I watched DIS until it was on Netflix (and deemed it an action TV series that's got nothing to do with Star Trek) and watched only a few episodes of PIC until it turned into the "fellowship of the ring" with the introduction of a sword wielding elf. Should I squeeze my nose and dive into it again and try to finish it?

I'll watch SNW as soon as I can. Still haven't gotten around it

Day of the Tentacle (1993). Admittedly, it was the remastered version from 2016 which has more modern controls, but the game is exactly the same as the old one.

It was fascinating to look at it again with more mature eyes: besides the fact that it feels a bit dated as a whole, it was funny to me to notice how much humanity loves time travel stories.

It's not that this game is doing anything different in that regard, it's just that I thought about how much media exists on the subject (and has been very successful).

Anyhow, although dated, the game is brilliant and wholesome and made me wonder which are the best (and recent) graphic adventure games

Where does pollution go when it rains?

I unfortunately live in a very polluted area, one where air quality apps mark in red and recommend that I never get out of my lair. When it rains enough the air quality becomes more bearable and here comes the question: where does pollution go when it rains hard? Does it get pushed to the ground and stays there? Does it get embedded in the water (so instead of breathing it, I get to drink it later in the tap water)? I'm curious to know where it gets dispersed or stuck (to possibly avoid it)

Why do some posts disappear, but can still be voted?

Yesterday I saw a post about the Reddit IPO and commented on it. The post was on c/World News of Lemmy.World and seemed to just have been posted since it had no comments. I then kept scrolling as usual and found out that the same exact post with the same title had already appeared on c/Technology of Lemmy.World with lots of comments and votes, so I understood the first one I saw was a repost and this was likely the original post and I decided to write the same comment again. Now something interesting happened. I use Eternity and see my two identical comments being up or down voted and someone replied to my first comment (and I can see this reply in my inbox), but I cannot access the first post anymore (it says "error refreshing the page") Thought the first post had been taken down because perhaps the original poster or mods decided it was a repost, but I woke up this morning and both of my comments keep being voted, so someone must be able to see both posts! How is this possible? Edit: fixed grammar

    Some feature requests and questions

Are any of these features already existing (and can be activated, but I didn't see how)? (1) Making the sub-lemmy in the header have a different color so the user can visually spot the topic before reading the title (2) Moving the header road footer, so see the topic/sub-lemmy after the title of the post (3) removing the exclamation mark in the sub-lemmy header across the app. Since it's present in all sub-lemmy's it is a bit a nuisance (4) change the size of the sub-lemmy names in the list of subscribed sub-lemmy's (5) write in user's points in the about tab (6) graying out titles of posts already read (7) search through posts you only upvoted (but not saved). This may be a Lemmy feature request and not just Liftoff though as I've seen this lacking from all other apps I tried Thanks for making a really awesome app!

Grazie mille

Why do I appear as "pending" forever in some communities and why can't I search for some instances I know to exist?

Since I joined joined Lemmy, I signed up for two instances (Lemmy.World and Lemmy.Zip) because I didn't entirely understand the fediverse and also because it seemed useful to be on multiple instances, since Lemmy.World sometimes has outages. Anyhow, coming from Reddit I started to look for communities I care about and I tried to join them. It's been two months now and there are some communities where I clicked on "join" and I still appear as "pending". Of course, they need to chose to approve me, but I'm wondering what I must do to prove worthy. Moreover, I learned about communities I might want to join and I cannot find them from the two instances I signed up for. More precisely, I wanted to join some communities on feddit.it and I cannot find them from the search bar in Jerboa, while I can see them from Connect for Lemmy but I can only browse them as guest. Is that because they're not federated with the two communities I signed up for? I suppose in that case I need to try to make an account directly in such instances Thank you for any insight you might have! UPDATE: regarding the first question, as several people pointed out below, I still appear as pending, but these communities now appear as those I am subscribed to in my apps (this is some sort of standard glitch in Lemmy and it's OK). Regarding the second question, I've been to feddit.it on my browser and looked for communities I like and then I searched for them in apps with a better search function, such as Liftoff. While I know everyone is going gangbusters about Sync for Lemmy, I still haven't found an app I like the best, but found each app is doing something slightly better than others, so I need to get more used to the fact that (at least for now), I need to access Lemmy through multiple apps (which is not necessarily a bad thing). Thank you everyone for your help!
