IME this is largely the stance that the LA Metro buses* take, as long as you're not causing trouble. A lot of the time I get waved on for the card not reading quick enough (resulting in a free ride), and I've literally never seen a driver tell someone to leave because their card won't scan or they don't have the money for it.
Which, when you think about it makes sense. The $1.75 or so they're 'losing' from the passenger not paying (the bus will be going that route anyway, regardless of whether they board or not) will be FAR exceeded by the cost of paying a bus driver to sit there with a bus out of commission for however long it takes cops to get there and force someone out, PLUS a literal bus full of now pissed off people who may be missing connections because some bus driver had a stick up his ass. It absolutely doesn't make sense unless the fare-evader in question is either a chronic problem causer or an immediate threat.
* trains/subways are a different matter, they have cops checking randomly onboard there to fine people

Another great one is seitan aka wheat meat, and it’s really cheap if you make it from flour rather than vital wheat gluten. Still pretty cheap if made from vital wheat gluten too.

I’m so, so hopeful that I’m a few decades people will look back at our terrible indoor air quality the way we look at indoor smoking, breathing in leaded gasoline fumes, etc. One of those things that just seems like an unimaginable way to live once you’ve experienced the alternative.

Do you actually think the watermelon racist trope is because black people just happened to like watermelon a lot? Because if you do you need to go read up on it, and if you don’t then you need to stop trivializing the history of racist oppression by equating it with a joke about a snack purchase.

Totally depends on your local laws. Where I live (southern California) any fruit hanging over the sidewalk is free for the public to take, regardless of whether the tree itself is on public property. But if you cross the property line to reach it, it becomes theft.

Out of all the types of American political voters that exist (as defined and studied by Pew), the progressive left has the highest voting rate of any group. Including 'Faith and Flag Conservatives.'
If you're super worried about criticism from someone further left than you killing support for your candidate, it's not because leftists don't show up to vote.
'Transgendered' is best left in the 2000s btw.

Station Eleven from… Station Eleven is probably there only one that’s been as interesting to me as the story itself, I guess because it’s such a big part of the story and character motivations. The book and show are both good in their own ways, but I particularly like the passage repeated throughout the show:
I remember damage, then escape
Then adrift in a stranger’s galaxy for a long time
But I’m safe now
I found it again, my home

Your "presentation" not matching your ID is not an issue.
Should it be? No. But it’s an issue in some places for some people every election, because some poll workers hopped up on Fox News think the gender section in the ID not saying what they think it should say means voter fraud is happening.
As the article goes on to say, trans people vote at a higher rate than cis people, and that’s in spite of potential access issues at the poll.

The one I have is from REI and made of modal (similar to rayon, made from wood pulp), it’s the only one I’ve used but it feels very nice, soft, and lightweight. I don’t ever feel like I’d be better off not wearing it if I’m in direct sunlight, and sweat dries from it fairly quickly. I’ve been hot while wearing it but not any hotter than I would have been standing in the sun to begin with, you know? I’ve also never had it fail and result in a burn, and my dermatologist was enthusiastic about it when I brought up that I’d been using that instead of sunscreen.
The main reason I went with that brand was because I couldn’t find any non-polyester options anywhere else. There’s nothing wrong with them functionally, I just try to avoid polyester in general.

If you absolutely hate sunscreen for sensory reasons, check out UPF jackets and other clothing. I live in a place where the UV is 11+ every day in the summer and it works great without being suffocatingly hot. Being able to just throw a jacket on and go outside without worrying about sunburn is pretty great.

You didn’t have to, plenty of people were talking about pressuring Biden to step down and let someone else run way before his disastrous debate performance. Nothing about wanting a different candidate for Dems implies that you want Republicans to win.

Anyone who has been a pedestrian is also well acquainted with this. Cars watch for and expect other cars, not people (bikes, mopeds, etc). The amount of times I’ve almost been hit by someone who is staring intently at oncoming traffic and flooring it without looking anywhere else is too damn high.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I don’t really care if they got what they wanted when the result is that way more voters are way more hyped about voting against Trump. The people who were convinced Biden was destined to be re-elected if he went up against Trump again were delusional and putting way more people at risk by demanding everyone shut up, fall in line, and be grateful they were giving us a not-Trump to vote for.

This man is far too old to be learning for the first time that the press treatment of Trump ranges from ‘with kid gloves’ to ‘trying to get him elected’. Has he been asleep since 2016?
This also has the taste of a dude that is seething about Biden being pressured into not seeking re-election, in which case he needs to get the fuck over it.

We’ve got a blackout curtain on our largest ‘window’ (glass sliding door onto the porch), and all our windows are single pane, if you can believe that shit existing somewhere it reaches 110+ F in the summer. 🫠
I’m half of the mind to just install the cellular shades regardless of what the landlord says and eat any potential charges for damage when we move out, it can’t be more expensive than the AC blasting like it is all summer.

It has always amused me that the tourists to the US that I’ve spoken to are often very excited to see raccoons, and disappointed if they don’t see them before they leave. Some others I’ve noticed on the east coast of the US are blue jays and cardinals. Boy, do people get excited about those if they’ve never seen them before! Very pretty birds of course, just very easy to get used to and see as uninteresting as well.
I saved it from a cropped image of an old zine and forgot to make note of where I got it 😭 Reverse image search isn’t helping me Queer shitposters you’re my only hope!

Note: this is not a request for troubleshooting help. For the past few years my 10ish year old “smart” TV will maybe once a week or so completely lose the ability to play sound in the Youtube app, and only in the Youtube app. Sound works just fine everywhere else. Bizarrely this is always triggered by an ad and never a video. Restarting the app doesn’t fix it, and neither does clearing the cache. Fortunately doing a full restart of the TV fixes it, it’s just irritating to have to restart because an ad somehow broke the sound. What technological gremlins haunt you?
An interesting exploration of Etaoin Shrdlu.

I’m getting an error when I try to upload pictures that says: “syntaxerror: JSON Parse error: Unexpected identifier “Request”” I saw an older thread on here about the same error and it was suggested it could be a file size thing, but the files I’ve tried uploading are around 30-50 kb so I don’t think it’s that. It doesn’t seem to be an issue with the file itself having something causing an error either, as I’ve tried using image files made on different computers as well.
As the title says, what are your favorite books with trans protagonists? I just finished Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki and thoroughly enjoyed it. The main character is a runaway trans girl who wants to be a violinist. Without spoiling too much it’s also a sci-fi/fantasy story and has a lesbian side-romance. TW for rape and general transphobia. What Moves The Dead by T. Kingfisher is another favorite of mine. It has a nonbinary protagonist and is a SFF horror rewrite of The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe. If you like an alt-history Victorian setting with the undead this is straight up your alley.
