That's actually a very cool idea.

Do a proper SS leather jacket but with a defiled swastika all over the back (so no one can mistake it) and reclaim it?

I'd probably not use the red band.

And would this become problematic in a decade when the jackets get normalised and mainstream (probably without the punk defiling)?

A conceivable way could be to disrupt the nuclear force of the target atoms, maybe like an anti-Pion/Gluon ray that self-propagates the reaction through the released energy.

(As we might remember, splitting the atom yields a bunch of energy, and uncontrolled such reactions go Hiroshima)

It might be controlled by sub-particle lensing, probably some kind of magnetic field, to be active at a specific distance.

For the reaction to be contained, either there's a radially limiting component (air is not particle dense enough to propagate the reaction, or atoms not energy dense enough) or it's a cascade triggered by the beam which stops when the beam stops (or the reaction gets too far away from it)

As I believe Pions and Gluons are their own anti-particles, I don't know how we would go about doing this, but hey, that's for Science!™ to solve.

Board games have been nearly ruined by kickstarter.

Instead of buying a well reviewed and recommended game from a store, you have to back a hyped up sales pitch, and then wait 4 months for delivery, if the producers don't just bail with your money or go "oops, we couldn't finish what we promised, and we already spent all your money...".

And if you don't back it to later read the reviews, the game is out of print and still waiting for the first wave of deliveries, meaning a second print is still at least a year off.

Also, the ratings are heavily skewed by people rating on the hype or early/review copies, meaning the rankings are heavily amazonified.

EtA: Also games are heavily bloated with social media candy: heavy and fragile minis, box stands, blingy crap periferals (branded dice holding toucan) and still needing organisers, player aids and mods from third parties who've gotten review copies to make said supplements...

Oh, and the stretch goal extras (get another 150 vanity minis/3D printed scoring tokens) for only $150 and an 18 month wait!

Are you suggesting that being atheist is unnatural?

Of course it is unnatural or do you believe apes have strong opinions about theism? Same goes for theism. Naturality is mostly irrelevant for complex sociocultural views, IMO. I find atheism beneficial, though.

I think this puts a point on your confusion with the descriptor.

Do you believe ducks are convinced a god exists? If not, they're atheist.

Are rocks convinced a god exists? I'd argue they aren't sentient and thus not able to - they're atheist.

Atheism doesn't require an act of will, isn't an identity, it only describes one particular thing (which we have a need to describe as religious people get all tizzy about it), just like "blue", "tall" or "dizzy". And to belabour the point, it actually describes the absence of a thing, and thus covers all options but one.

An analogous term for someone not believing in aliens could be analienist, you can be analienist regardless if there are aliens or not (as it only addresses the belief). It doesn't also mean you're anything else (like tall, handsome, or mysterious). It doesn't require you to campaign against aliens, throw rocks at the sky, or go to analienist meetings.

As long as you don't believe in aliens, you're analienist.

I also have a hard time believing this to be intentionally meaning bearing, mostly due to this being a pop art meme overused in both social media and marketing.

Compare it to the ad poster, it can be art, but most of the time it isn't meant to. (and to my mind the ubiquity of ad posters raises the noise that the intentional art needs to cut through)

I believe OP is trying to troll the comm, or at least confused about the ambition of the comm.

But for shits and giggles I gave it a good 5 minutes of viewing and quite some generosity, two themes pop out: Contrast between old and new play, and a generational shift in Escapism

On the left side the legos are beige, interrupted by a line of chargers before the right side with candies, and the console controller.

This could try to convey a motif of a generational shift from constructive, wholesome play to an instant gratification paradigm. Maybe with the advent of the informational age

There's a difference in compositional choices I don't understand, and with the background of this art style am prone to dismiss as for visual effect rather than intentional meaning.

The shapes on the left side seem mostly to draw the eye rightward. The curve in the top left which could have signified a softening of regimentality is in contrast to the straight and formal positioning of non-rectangular pieces in the lower left. This could be trying to convey the variations or turmoil within the old paradigm, but this level of skill isn't expected neither from art form nor artist, and as it's a staple of the pop art style I'm leaning towards it being only for visual effect.

I find no way of differentiating the choice from just starting it as a social media post and half way thinking of a cool contrast.

Looking closer at the pills on the right side, none of them can be identified as pharmaceuticals, but several of them are famous candy shapes. I conclude that they most probably represent only candy and no pills/drugs.

Also on the right side, the controller breaks the motif and catches the eye, both for a visual payoff. But I see no reflection or contrast of controller against candy, nor divider, nor against lego.

If I stop looking for deeper meaning in the relations of elements and just look at emotional impact, it could simply be a nostalgic representation of early millennial childhood . Where the dividing line isn't a divider, but it's own part of a tableau, and the choice of items being significant as a collection rather than as elements.

I find no layers of meaning hidden in the contrast or relationships of elements, no artful nods that usually give away mastery enough to wield subtle meaning.

(and the more I look at it, the less I admire the craftsmanship)

Precisely, so the Federation may be anarchist, even though the member races aren't.

With what we know about how the Federation interacts with other races and planets, real world logic would indicate that the humans could be (and live) the model that the Federation is built upon.

All this is conjecture ofc, and is probably as much an exercise in understanding post-scarcity anarchism as possible Star Trek lore :p

    Which is inherently anarchist :P

As it seems a common confusion in this thread, I repeat, anarchism doesn't have to be without government or rules, several forms of anarchism are focused on not limiting individuals freedoms and/or not allowing power over eachother (while accepting government and rules not contrary to that). Both of which I believe describe how the Federation works.

The tech is called Window farm and had a quite large, global community developing the system for simplicity, climates and yield. I haven't looked at it since pre-pandemic times, but the site seems to have been updated since.

Check it out, there's a lot of cool solutions upcycling everyday objects!

As for NFT, I haven't tried it yet, but have had Kratky, DWC, Ebb & Flow, window farm, and am currently designing an aeroponics system to play around with.

Haven't ever chosen NFT as the simple setups require a lot more supports and/or floor area than I can comfortably accommodate. And DWC/Kratky with a bubbler seems to outperform it with less fiddling or effort.

I'm now curious to see if aeroponics will lower the water usage, and how it will affect yields.

For home use, I'd suggest DWC, with or without bubbler, as probably the most yield/fun for least hassle. Having multiple plants in the same system will always lead to complications and unnecessary mass death.

A typical window garden runs on an ebb & flow, with flooding happening at intervals according to climate and plant needs. Evaporation will be different in Finland than Cuba.

I'm curious as to how you come to think NFT would be more space efficient? The vertical window garden setup in the picture should be able to fit more foliage than the side-by-side configuration most NFT seems to use.

I'd say they're post-scarcity anarchist. There's no central/communal resource dispersal as needed for socialism, nor the central/communal resource allocation/planning needed for communism.

There's seemingly no authority outside starfleet exerting any power, nor does anyone ever claim a motivation beyond exploration or study (to do something meaningful). The lack of money and unlimited access to replicated resources pending available dilithium also points to a society without exploitative discrepancies.

The humans also never are reported to have any resource hogging, the only tensions/stratification seem to be militarily (and against external parties also diplomatically), meritocratic, and even then the bottleneck seems mostly to be to not fall behind other races.

I don't see neither capitalism, socialism, communism, despotism, theocracy, nor fascism, but many aspects of anarchism. If you've read anything about The Culture, they openly speak about being anarchist, and it's very similar to Star Trek.

You can't really help someone that doesn't want to be helped, until they want it you can only be supportive and an inspiration/showcase/model.

The way to break out of it is to focus on your zone of control and do small, but noticeable things. Even if you can only decide where the papers on your desk go, start there and put them where you want them, then practice putting them back in their new place as they move around.

Build upon that success with other small wins in areas you can affect, and slowly the zone will grow bigger.

Line it with ground cover fabric and you don't have to care about material, rot or anything ;)

I built a wood planter on legs with no bottom, attached ground cover fabric in a sling/U-shape that hung a bit away from the wood in all sides.

A dm of LECA, then soil and compost as per usual. LECA makes for nice drainage and water reservoir.

Keeping the soil away from the wood made it so I've had no rot or degradation at all for 6 years as air comes in around to dry it all out.

Sizewise I covered the whole short end, and made it deep enough to fit the door and other furniture, about 40x60x195 cm.

Check out figure 2 it shows equivalent cooling in energy units. Meaning how much energy is carried away by perspiration, and showing it for different levels of humidity. I read it as between 5-10% lower at higher humidity.

Compare that to the radiant heat difference (from 32 degrees to 22, as per the cooling chart) which cools you about 286 % more. And with convective cooling we expect even more at higher temperature differences.

(Calculated with Boltzmanns law for 310 K body temperature)

You are unfortunately wrong in your scepticism, they've been used for millennia to great effect, and are even part of how ice was made.

In a modestly arid climate (like a mountainous region) with 30% ambient humidity, you can achieve, a 12 °C drop, that's a lot more than the ~10% of lost sweat cooling.

And in case your brain works in a way that needs steps, for a practice trip I'd suggest these steps:

    1. Prepare everything you need according to your boat, waters, weather, safety needs and trip. Make sure to double check that you have everything you need before casting off.

... Get out on the water, prepare the rig you want to practice, etc...

    1. Pick a direction you want to go in, note a landmark, buoy, or something stationary to steer towards. If you don't pick a direction straight against or with the wind, the rest will be easier.

    2. Try adjusting your sails to give you some speed. If you have a common Bermuda rig, start with your foresail, it's going to be easier to see when it's good, and it will give you speed enough to steer. I usually teach it as: take the sail in until it gets that nice billowed curve, and then let it out again until it just about can't keep it. Then do the same with the mainsail.

Note that if the boat changes angle against the wind, you'll have to adjust the sails and/or start over. When you're starting out, you'll have no chance to keep the boat going straight for long enough to both hit your landmark and trim your sails.

    1. Check your course against your goal, try to adjust course a bit (10-15 degrees) and adjust the sails as needed.

    2. Now try keeping course against the wind rather than the landmark. Can you sail with the wind straight from the side? How do you adjust the sails for that? How does that affect what you need to do with the tiller to keep straight?

    3. Repeat for different wind angles. Also, note that winds change around obstacles, sails, and with time of day. Typically not a deal breaker, but enough to be confusing if you're not aware.

This is probably enough for the first dozen trips. Remember to save energy to be able to get back, moor, and set everything ship shape again.

As you get more comfortable, you can try doing tacks (same sail adjustment procedure), then try doing a tack so that you only need to adjust the foresail, then maybe trying deliberate listing, sailing donuts (with continuous sail adjusting) with a gybe, and then onto maneuvering tasks like stopping at a buoy, doing a figure of eight Man-overboard maneuver, picking up something out of the water.

And somewhere along this you start doing actual boating, learning to moor, anchoring, cooking, planning your days, routes, planning for weather, etiquette with other boats, etc.

You're (almost) book right, but sailing wasn't made by or for people reading/writing about it.

Most seamanship is actually about managing poor conditions, poor weather, poor alertness, lack of judgement due to weather fatigue/boredom/hangovers, but also changes in weather, wind, currents, equipment failure etc.

I would suggest you start from the opposite direction, see your boat as a tool, and explore what you can do with it.

Try what happens if you pull in your sail or not in the current wind, where is a nice sweet spot?

Do you know how to find the wind direction without your instruments? How precise can you get?

How does the tiller respond, what happens if you turn fast or slow or in between? Is there a difference up against the wind or down? Is there a difference to port or starboard?

How straight can you steer? How straight does the boat go when you steer straight? How does this change over different winds?

If you don't try this with a comfortable/skilled sailor, you might want to avoid some things with risk of injury, like:

keep to low to moderate winds, with mild gusts, when practicing (or the forces and noise will make things unhelpfully harder),

only do tacks/turning against the wind for now (turning with the wind behind you can have the boom launch you off the boat, and wind you or even knock you out), and

Do have backup emergency equipment, if something goes bad you do want to be rescued even if your SRC got wet, mobile lost signal, and you fell overboard. Prepare according to your size boat and waters, signal whistles, flares, or automated beacons can be good. Also make sure that someone will look for you, leave a plan with check-in times with someone on land.

(A plan with check-in can be as simple as: I'm going out thereabouts over the weekend, I'll send you a text on where I anchor in the evening, and I'm expected back late Sunday night. Here's my number, here's the number for the rescue service)

For some there might be reasons and considerations more important than granting their offspring a life without strife (and thus make different moral judgements). I'm not trying to judge one choice over the other, I'm curious as to why the topic gets so personal and passionate even with people who otherwise are level-headed and well reasoned.

I've been asked to make a Thai Red curry with chicken for a larger party, and they've asked for the soup to be of variable spicyness. I was thinking that maybe I could do the soup mild, and have an additive with extra spice. I could go with chilli oil ofc, but I'd prefer to have the richness of the red curry flavors if possible. Is there a good way to make some kind of red curry seasoning? Do I just offer the guests red curry paste to mix into the soup, or should I mix it with something?

    Reading tips for B2B consultancy

I'm looking for new reading recommendations, specifically for stuff applicable to B2B technical/engineering consulting. We're a small business selling engineering hours for a niche building discipline (noise design/acoustics engineering), and I find it difficult to apply many of the most common books to our situation. I'll happily take any recommendations you have, especially about growth, early organisation, and first employees. But anything on topic would be awesome.

Where do I find drafts for comments?

When replying to a post or comment I get the option to save my draft if ever I exit the reply. Stupendous feature! But I'm pretty sure I've forgotten to go back at least some times and will have unfinished drafts saved somewhere. Is there a way to check on these and/or remove these? Do they get auto-removed, and when? Or will they be stuck clogging up my device data until the end of times?

[bug] Local and All show up thrice in the sidebar

In the sidebar you can choose Subscribed/Local/All in the top bit, and then again in the comms list. On top of this, Local and All show up twice in the comms list on one of my accounts. ![Screenshot ](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/75721fd8-caaf-4fb5-adb7-3d40bd89ee9d.jpeg)

    [bug] Subscribed comms don't list

Bug: My subscriptions don't show up on any of my accounts. After the lemmynsfw.com update I tried to access my lemmynsfw.com account but not being logged in, my subscriptions didn't load for that account. I've since tried to relog into that account but failed, and after that I've had no subscriptions in my list on any account. Posts still load correctly in the subscribed feed.

A cure little story about the stick that saved the day. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qI3UEwvqXLY

One of my favorite creators made a little vlog [3:33] about finding herself a stick on a gloomy day. I just found it today, and thought it might delight this comm. Hope you enjoy.
