I'm surprised you've made it this long without hearing about the sonic sunglasses.

Spoilers in that link, of course.

I just felt like the show lost its way a little. Like it doesn’t seem to understand the doctor anymore.

I think Capaldi is a fantastic actor and I love the idea of returning to an older doctor, but I recall an early episode when he duels a swordfighter with a spoon and it made me think of that old Reddit copypasta from the weird girl.

    Then the sonic sunglasses?

    I just.

I don’t know. It just wasn’t for me.

What an insanely powerful piece and a masterful use of black and white.

I'm honestly not sure what the authorial perspective of the crusades was. In the late 1800's, it probably wasn't safe to be openly critical, but this feels very critical.

The soldiers seem almost skeletal. There's a ghoulish tone to everyone except the angel, who seems to be undeniably leading this army of the damned.

    Really interesting image.

It's my understanding that, with LLMs, being polite can net better results because they're trained off human interactions where being polite is better.

It's not that they care at all, it's just how language works.

I've not seen a study of the phenomenon or even tested it myself, but it seems plausible.

I suspect just the air near the bat, as we both did it on our first try. Bats are small and fast, so the odds of us hitting the bat on the first try is low.

To be fair, in both instances, the bat had gotten into a building and couldn't be shooed back out, so intervention is pretty important to saving its life.

Once it's on the ground, you pretty much have it, as they can't take off from the ground. Mine scampered under a bed very quickly and we had to move the bed to scoop it up and carry it outside.

In both instances, the bat was perfectly fine and flew off safely once outside.

Anecdotaly, if ever a bat gets into your home and is flying around unable to escape, the easiest way to relocate it safely is to slap it out of the air with a bath towel whip.

In college, my best friend did this to a bat on his first try and it became the stuff of legend. Years later, stay at a hostel with some friends, a bat got into our room and I remembered the towel trick. First try! It was surprisingly intuitive.

I carried the bat (after getting gloves) outside where it lept from my hands and flew to safety.

    The more you know!

You’re applying the behavior of Republicans under Trump in 2024 to their behavior in 2016 under Mitch McConnell, which is not a fair way to interpret history.

The Republicans’ primary goal has always been to consolidate power, a strategy evident even before Trump’s influence. This was evident in 2016 when McConnell blocked Merrick Garland’s appointment. It wasn’t just about denying Obama a win; it was about maintaining control over the Supreme Court. By holding the position open, they ensured a conservative majority with Gorsuch’s appointment in 2017.

While their actions under Trump have often seemed erratic and without principle, the decision to block Garland was a calculated, strategic move rooted in the same pursuit of power. Viewing their behavior solely through the lens of recent events, like the border bill, ignores the broader, consistent strategy they have employed over the years.

The move to block Garland was a clear demonstration of their long-term strategy to secure judicial power, not an isolated act of obstructionism. This context is crucial for understanding the continuity in their approach to power, rather than seeing it as a sudden shift in behavior.

This isn't a bill and this wasn't 2024. Mitch McConnell was responsible for stonewalling Garland's appointment to the supreme court. Trump was responsible for killing the bill. Trump is an idiot, McConnell is just evil. They don't play the same way at all. They almost certainly would have passed that legislation if Trump hadn't interfered.

It was a lifetime appointment to the most powerful position in the country, assuming you have a like-minded majority. If he were a federalist, it would have been a gift to them on a silver platter.

We're dealing with counterfactuals here, but attributing their increasingly irrational behavior today to all their actions in the past is a terrible way to interpret history.

He is not. If he were, why would the republicans have stonewalled his nomination for Supreme Court Justice? It doesn't make sense.

He has participated in some events, like debates, with the federalist society, but he is not a member.

Do all the research in the world and you will not find any connection there.

There's always a chance, it's just very small. These corrupt justices are the end game for the republican party, the odds of any of them breaking ranks to convict is very low.

That said, it's almost certainly not about conviction, so much as upholding the rule of law and creating political pressure and support for something like packing the court.

Then you have to take the additional steps of finding privacy focused roms etc... It just wasn't worth the savings to me. There's things about Android I miss, but the fact that my phone is good for years and years is such a game changer.

I have been gradually transitioning over to proton for additional privacy and I've basically completely divorced myself from Google at this point.

Okay, source it if you've got it, because the idea that a single study ran out of funding at 25 and that's where the number comes from is such an odd suggestion, as though no one else has studied the brain's development and neuroscientists everywhere just shrugged and thought, "if only the funding were there."

Here's a well-sourced article that concludes the brain continues to develop well into the mid-20's.

While the brain will always continue to develop and grow, due to neuroplasticity, the concern is whether or not the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for long-term decision making, is properly developed. This development continues into the mid-20's and is well-documented.

Here's a 2022 study where they looked at over 100,000 brain scans from people 110 days old to over 100 years old used to draw and affirm similar conclusions.

While 25 isn't magic number, as everyone's brains develop on different timelines, it is a rational and reasonable landmark that can be reliably used for broad discussions.

Here's more from the National Institute of Mental Health and Penn Medicine.

I know there’s a lot of talk that after x season the show is basically over, but I’m curious what everyone here thinks. Do you watch and enjoy every episode and season? Are there seasons you would skip or stop watching entirely? Just curious how people here feel about such a long-running show.

My Three Kingdoms RPG (2nd Session AAR)

The Three Kingdoms era of Chinese History has long been a topic of fascination for me and my brothers growing up. I’ve never really GMed my own content before, but really wanted to set up a campaign for my brother, wife, and a few friends who’ve been drawn unwittingly into my esoteric interests. Because nothing existed to support my interests, I cobbled together a combination of Cortex Prime, which is incredibly modular and perfect for the purpose, and Reign, a fantasy RPG with rules for governing interactions between groups. For those who may not know, the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history is a massive, 80-year civil war during which 1/4 of the entire world’s population died. There are countless factions that ultimately condensed down to three major factions: hence the Three Kingdoms. My players have assumed the leadership of the fictional Hiahe City, after the previous ruler died at the Battle of Hulao Pass. Dong Zhuo remains ensconced in power in the new capital and rumors of a powerful sorceress becoming his newly adopted daughter imply his power may still be rising. Hiahe city has been economically devastated by banditry, it’s martial might a fraction of its former self after the battle and internal strife from various political families, many of whom have been courted by the envious Han Fu, a powerful but short-sighted nearby governor. After spending their first session familiarizing themselves with their problems and the setting at large, the players made shrewd decisions to buy time with internal factions in order to focus on dealing with the banditry. They located a group of Yellow Turbans (rebels from the civil war just ten years prior) and offered them supplies and potential amnesty should they help with the banditry. With some clever talking from the party’s Taoist monk and some abundantly generous supplies and the former rebels agreed to aid the players. In an unexpected turn of events, Gongsan Zan’s emissary, Zhao Yun, arrived with an offer of aid due to the city’s former master having saved his life at the battle of Hulao Pass. I fully expected my players to sit on this marker and save it for the storms that lie ahead, but instead they called it in immediately to arrange an overwhelming attack on the Black Mountain Bandits. The result was an absolutely devastating battle in which two of our players rode out and defeated the enemy commander, Zhang Yan, one of Gongsan Zan’s former lieutenants. With his death and the overwhelming allied might, the bandits routed almost immediately and their encampment was seized and their forces totally dispersed. Even some of the less martial players were able to serve with distinction and make a name for themselves. Zhao Yun, a legendary warrior from this period, became close friends with the player who serves as the spymaster and for those familiar with the setting, everyone hopes to lure him to serve Hiahe. Some players were upset at “wasting” the marker from Gongsun Zan. He was a powerful cavalry commander, think Rohan, who could have been a life saver in a pinch or the hammer to their anvil. Time will tell, but building brotherhood with Zhao Yun and completely dispersing the Black Mountain Bandits were unexpected outcomes from my perspective as the GM. Other players felt that employing former rebels to aid in the battle would come back to haunt them and there are certainly powerful families within the city who will be very upset to see former yellow turbans in the militia. That said, they’re flush with bandit treasure, have firmly established themselves as the new sovereigns and have laid the groundwork for renewed prosperity in the region. Still, unrest remains within the city as various factions vie for influence and wealth. Han Fu’s reach grows longer and Dong Zhuo threatens to extend his control beyond the capital once more. Still further ahead men of virtue and ambition, such as Liu Bei, Yuan Shao, and the infamous Cao Cao, all wait to make their move and build their name.

    Ad blocking and ProtonVPN

I've been on Mullvad for a while now, but I'm looking to move to ProtonVPN soon and I'm curious how well it blocks ads out of the box. I've looked into the possibility of combining it with something like NextDNS or AdGuard, but I'm not super tech savvy, so I think I'd prefer to keep it simple if possible. Mullvad has been okay, but occasionally ads get through. If ProtonVPN is that good or better, I'll probably be fine.
