Because it all boils down to Trump's ego.
Saying it made him look like an utter fool. So his enablers will do whatever they have to do to prove that he was "correct".
It's honestly frightening.

That was exactly the problem. Some digging around in the config file showed a duplicate system tray hidden just off screen. Probably happened when I was moving panels around.
Thanks!

looks like OP is a beginner and not an experienced editor
Basically yes. I have contributed a few times when I thought about it, but then go long stretches between contributions. But it's only now that I'm trying to make a conscious effort TO think about it more once I downloaded organic maps so I could move away from Google.
I've always had the opinion that if you use an FOSS product, the "cost" is in "contribution"; which doesn't have to be monetary (though I often do). The payment for using a FOSS app (to me) is to contribute in terms of either helping to develop it, or writing user manuals for it (I helped with LibreOffice Documentation back in the day) or even creating tutorials or recording tutorials, or even just championing it's use to your friends and family.
Moving away from Google I realized that I had been negligent in that with OSM. I've contributed to most of mybigger ones (GIMP, Scribus, Inkscape, LibreOffice, etc...) But OSM just fell under the radar. So I'm trying to correct that by making a point of contributing to the data as much as I can.

Every single one of us, as kids, learned the concept of "garbage in, garbage out"; most likely in terms of diet and food intake.
And yet every AI cultist makes the shocked pikachu face when they figure out that trying to improve your LLM by feeding it on data generated by literally the inferior LLM you're trying to improve, is an exercise in diminishing returns and generational degradation in quality.
Why has the world gotten both "more intelligent" and yet fundamentally more stupid at the same time? Serious question.

I think these are just the ones who get caught and that there are hundreds more
"I think" is the operative statement there. What you think is pointless. Facts are what matter. And without evidence that it IS the majority doing it, automatically lumping them all into that group makes us no better than them in terms of their rhetoric and divisiveness.
Every damn side needs to stop painting the other with broad strokes and then complaining when they do it back. It's not helpful. Questions that are worded like this are not helpful.
This is a relatively new issue, although I don't recall any recent updates that would have caused it. When I plug in a USB stick or other device, the disk and device manager pops up twice; one is the normal one away from the edge of the screen, it goes away after about five seconds (like it should) The second, behind it, is tucked up right against the edge of the screen and does not go away until I trigger and then minimize my application launcher. Any ideas? I'm running Wayland because of the Maalit keyboard. Haven't tried to see if it duplicates it with X11.
Just a super quick question about helping to update the map locations. Between StreetComplete and Organic Maps, which is faster for submitting recommended changes to the OSM team in regards to things like business hours, etc...

I'm a guy and I'm in a very customer facing line of work and I don't have that issue at all.
As others have said, maybe it's an age thing (I'm middle aged) or maybe it's a tone thing. If I'm complimenting them, it's usually on something specific; "Oh hey, those are really cool glasses" or "I love what you've done with your hair.", etc...
It's never "You've got pretty hair, lady." or "Gosh yer' beautiful."
The line between platonic comment and creepy sex weirdo (in my mind) is if you're complimenting them on something they actively did that you think is cool (hairstyle, choice of glasses, etc...) it's fine. Complimenting them on features that they have no control over, like saying "Hey, I just wanted to, completely randomly tell you how attractive you are" is creepy.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the moment they lose the election, she tells him to fuck off and divorces him. Privately she's likely disgusted to find out that her husband is a feckless sycophant who without hesitation would sell out his own family for an attempt at power.

I'm not entirely clear on what your angle is (or even what you're particularly asking about). But I'll try my best to offer something meaningful.
From what I can gather, you are making the rather common mistake of equating captialism with corporate capitalism/venture capitalism It may seem convenient (and depressing to think of the things as intertwined, but they're really not.
Capitalism is very simple. It's the exchange of goods and services for monetary reward. The harder you work (theoretically) the more you're rewarded. It's only when corporations, venture capitalists and stock prices become involved that that notion begins to become corrupted.
If I make a point to trying to do my grocery shopping at the local grocery store rather than the big chain, that's still capitalism. I'd argue it's more pure capitalism than corporate douchebaggery.
If I have a neighbour who likes to make wooden furniture in his garage and I procure a table and chairs from him instead of going to IKEA. That's still capitalism.
If (as I had all the time growing up) our neighbours kept cows while my family kept chickens, we would purchase beef from them and they would purchase eggs and poultry from us. THAT'S CAPITALISM.
Seeing the reward from your own sweat rather than a corporation seeing the reward from other people's sweat.
I guess in some sort of answer to your question, take back the notion of capitalism from the greedy corporations that have hijacked it. Support your local community. Go to your local farmer's markets. Buy from local artisans and farmers. THAT'S how we reconcile (and fix) capitalism.

Hicks and Newt had to die in the beginning of Alien 3 in order for the film to thematically even be an Alien film.
At their heart, the films are about Ripley being alone, more in common with the titular alien than with her termporary allies. She's an outsider in her crew. She's a civilian among marines. She's a woman among convicts. She's lost her child, she's lost 57 years of her life. The Alien is her only real touchstone now, and in a way that is very expressly shown in the films, that becomes a kind of "relationship" in itself. She's closer to the alien than she is to the people who surround her.
If Hicks and Newt survived and were part of Alien 3, it takes that away and makes it an ensemble cast, which thematically doesn't fit, and (I think) it's one of the reasons that a lot of the new Alien films just don't feel like Alien films; they're missing that key thematic ingredient. Ripley is a tragic character, doomed to battle alone against the only thing she has left in her life.

What this is is MTG seeing the potential writing on the wall and slowly trying to sneak her way into more normal speak so she doesn't get fucking tossed out the door on her ass with the rest of them if Kamala wins and the "normal" republicans begin to purge their party of MAGA losers.

Fact checking would be piping up to correct the record things like spin and exaggeration, which both sides always do in a debate (correcting numbers, etc...)
The moderators didn't do that for either side. Their "fact checking" only occurred on statements that were clearly not reality and so far fetched that letting them go by unchecked would be opening them up to a potential lawsuit when a Haitian immigrant gets murdered by a MAGA moron.

I misspoke a bit. I don't mean that his other works are garbage by any means. In fact I quite liked Lord of War and Anon. Just meant that they never really hit the same depth of messaging that Gattaca seemed to hit.

Of course it's illegal to discriminate; "Genoism" they call it. But no one takes the laws seriously. If you refuse to disclose, they can always take a sample from a doorhandle, or a handshake. Even the saliva off your application form. And if all else fails, a perfectly legal drug test can just as easily become an illegal peek at your future in the company.
This movie stands as one of the most prescient I've ever watched. It's a shame that Nicols later works never matched it, and that this movie itself is somewhat forgotten.

- File system access being locked down unless you're rooted. I basically makes using some retro emulators impossible because in some cases the emulator installs the ROMs into the data partition which the launcher can't access.
- The inevitable forcing of Google/Apple's fucking A.I into every aspect of my phone. I can only opt out for so long before it's just baked into the OS itself with no way to disable it. If I want to ask an AI a question, or to double check my code for errors, I'll go to a website and ask it. I don't need/want it doing shit proactively all the time.

I finally pulled the trigger on replacing my ChromeOS completely with Manjaro using the Mrchromebox script. Other than some glitching getting the audio to work correctly, everything runs great. For the first two years I had this chromebook (Asus 433 flip) I thought that it wasn't worth the risk and that running the debian container via Crostini was plenty good enough. Well it turns out that: - A. No...it wasn't much of a risk at all. It was actually really smooth, including disconnecting the battery to disable the hardware write protect. I honestly don't know what I was worried about. and - B. I may have thought Crostini was good enough. But man oh man...it's a night and day difference having Linux running natively on this old girl rather than through a container that had to boot up every time I use the first linux app of the day. Anyway. Just wanted to share. Been using Manjaro on pretty much all of my computers for years, and now I can take the "pretty much" away and just say "all of them."
So....I updated my Manjaro to Plasma 6. Any chance that Minimal Menu (or something similar) exists? I was not happy to find it gone. It's been a part of my system for so long that I honestly just forgot it wasn't default. Now it doesn't even show up in the widget search and I'm honestly not sure I can live without it, largely because I can choose to centre it in the display on launch rather than having to choose either a) full-screen or b) right above the icon. I can't even describe how upsetting it was to reboot after the update....
...but its robot designs were well ahead of the curve for the time.
Just popping in to post about a community to discuss FOSS creative software like GIMP, Inkscape, Scribus, Kdenlive, Blender, etc... https://lemmy.ca/c/open_creative I've used them all at one time or another. Since moving to FOSS as much as possible ten years ago, I've learned a LOT about most of the programs, and consider myself a near expert in some (Kdenlive, GIMP) and fairly competent in others (Blender, Scribus). I feel like having a place where anyone who uses FOSS creative software can both ask questions, share advice, and celebrate each others works, would be a nice addition to the Fediverse. So feel free to join and post your work, your questions, your news or your tips and tricks. I'm a one man band as far as modding and maintaining for now, so thanks in advance for your patience while I learn how it all works on the back end.
Anyone having a recent segmentation fault with GIMP 2.10.36 when closing a file without saving changes, the issue has been fixed and will be merged into the next point release. 2.10.38. More info here: (scroll to bottom) https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gimp/-/issues/10785
Putting this out into the community for anyone who needs it. When I was first learning video editing, I had trouble finding good *narrative* content to practice with. There was plenty of stock footage, etc... but nothing scripted where you could craft a scene between two characters. Cinestudy is the best for that. In fact I'm using footage from there for a book that I've been working on about narrative editing in Kdenlive. https://cinestudy.org/
One of the main things that I have been missing in Lemmy since moving over from *the other* site has been the myriad communities for the various bits of FOSS software I use on a regular basis. Any any given day, I'll use Kdenlive, LibreOffice, Blender, Gimp and Scribus in the course of getting work done both personally and professionally, and I kept waiting for the day when I wouldn't have to go back to the other site to keep up to date with them. While some (Blender) eventually got communities in the fediverse of their own, few are very active. So I felt that I should at least *try* to create my own in the hopes that it draws some activity. So if you're joining because of a shared love of FOSS creative software, welcome. I'm hoping to post news and other articles from around the web, as well as being a place for questions and advice from user to user. Maybe it'll be just as dead as all the others. But I hope not.
The tl;dr bot that pops up on every link to an article on Lemmy is depriving those websites of clicks, which deprives them of ad revenue. The only thing that will accomplish is forcing those websites to do the very thing that we rail about; replacing their writers with crappy A.I because they can't afford to pay for *actual* content. We rail against the enshitification of the internet, but when there's a legitimate way to fight back by giving these websites a page view/read/click etc... so that they can attract advertisers, we would rather have a bot summarize it for us, giving them nothing.
Like the title says. Just upgraded my Android phone, got it set up and working like a charm. Went to connect it to my chromebook in the chromebook settings and it won't let me get past the "sign in with your google account" screen. Keeps saying "wrong password". But not only have I been already using that account/password not only on the new Android Phone, but on my Chromebook for the last year...but I also LITERALLY copied and pasted it from my bitwarden account after it failed to take the typed password three times. I'm stumped. Help please. Thanks in advance.
