Going to Taipei for an exchange semester, how do I find good and affordable housing?

I'm going on an exchange to Taiwan this fall, and am going to study at NTU. There are very affordable dorm rooms on campus, which I have applied to, but there is no guarantee of getting a room. Therefore I am looking into alternative solutions if necessary. Ideally I'd like a solo studio apartment somewhere near NTU (or quickly accessible using public transit), but I am also willing to share an apartment. My budget is realistically maximum 25000 NTD/month, but I may be able to stretch it to 30000/month if necessary. I am aware of the Facebook groups and have joined a large number of them. I will definitely keep an eye out there. I tried going on 591.com.tw, but since I don't yet read or speak any Mandarin I wasn't able to figure it out. Do the members of this community have any general advice about renting or living in Taipei, or specific tips for places to look? I'm interested in any and all information about this! :)

Visiting Taipei - what are some hidden gems

I'll be visiting Taipei later this summer for a few days. What are some hidden games? I am most excited to see the old Spanish fort, the palace museum, and the indigenous park which will be a day trip away. Are there any hidden gems in Taipei I should out on my list?

How much would a knee meniscus surgery costs in Taiwan with the NIH

Hi folks, I've been living in Taiwan for years so I have the NIH. Recently my knee is acting up and will get super painful during runs. As much as I want to deny it, I suspect that I have a meniscus tear 😢. If that is the case, I don't know if I have the financial means to support the treatment, so I want to ask if there's anyone here with an experience with knee meniscus repair or ACL reconstruction surgery in Taiwan? Any recommendations for a hospital or doctor? How much did it cost or did you get quoted? Thank you very much!

Taipei Nightlife

Some people might not know where to go for night life activities so here is a non-exhaustive list. * Revolver - social bar * Maji square (at yuanshan) cheap night, Triangle club, Tiki Hut, etc * Xinyi qu - expensive night with local Taiwanese clubs. This is good for going with friends, but the locals typically won't chat with you. * La Fin - new night club in xinyi qu * AI - club in xinyi qu, has some Taiwanese gangsters * 1001 Nights - $600 get three drinks, Latin music, mostly foreigners, closes at 6am. * Pawnshop - City outskirts, some drug use * Studio 9 - $500 cover, one drink, techno music * Pipe Live Music - Gong guan area, has outdoor bars and techno music night club * Game over - this is a video game bar If you got questions just let me know. Most foreigners just go to maji square on Fridays / Saturdays cause it's cheap and is foreigner friendly.

Taiwan’s minority indigenous peoples are being used to refute mainland China’s claims on the island – but what does that mean for their recognition, land rights and identity?

Alliances in Taiwan’s parliament after 01/13

according to the polls the country will have 3 main parties in a hung parliament: DPP, KMT and as a minor but still relevant party, the TPP acting as kingmaker. Lai (DPP) will be elected president. My questions about the hung parliament: Will KMT and TPP form a conservative alliance, or is it more realistic to believe DPP and TPP will sign a 4 year agreement? I consider the TPP a bunch of opportunists, but this opportunism in a hung parliament means they can form an alliance with whoever they want. All they have to do is party shopping and ask both main parties: we got this seats that give your party a majority. What are you going to give us in exchange? If party coalitions are something foreign to Taiwan, do you consider it feasible for any meaningful legislation to be passed in the next 4 years? I don’t see how: laws passed by the legislature would be vetoed by the president. Only minimal changes to current laws or laws with a very ample consensus would be possible, meaning nothing meaningful. You are the Taiwanese, you know better than I do. 謝謝

Any good tailors in Taipei for minir reparations?

Looking for a tailor who can repair textiles. I have had the loop which holds the belt on a pair of my jeans come loose due to the thread breaking, as well as one of the buttons on a bag of mine break. Is there anywhere in Taipei I could get these repaired? I guess it shouldn't be too difficult for someone who knows what they're doing to fix this, but I have no clue where to go for something like this and I can't fix it myself. Any info is appreciated! :)

In Chinese, Sodium is "鈉" (Nà). Is this because it's also the elemental symbol?

Or is this just a coincidence? Any other elements with the symbol as the full word?

Best way to learn about indigenous cultures from Taipei?

I will be visiting Taipei and would like to spend a day learning more about indigenous cultures. Is there a day trip that is recommended or a museum? I read that sometimes there are protests about tourists visiting indigenous areas so I don't want to do anything that would make someone uncomfortable

Vote for 臺 over 台

It's silly, but I like the proper 臺灣 better than the lazy version 台灣. It looks more sophisticated and is more official. I vote for the title of the community to have the lazy 台 replaced with the beautiful 臺. Anyone else in? Much love. Edit: spelling
