Hello everyone! So earlier tonight the server seemed to be down for a while. What are everyone's thoughts on coming up with some type of alternative independent back-channel communication method to get short-form updates about outages and other important community updates (community as in for our server, not a lemmy community). Obviously this ultimately depends on how the admins and mods of this instance feel about this; how willing are they to invest time into setting that up if its something that will not be run and modded by us but by them, and how willing they are to actually use it if it does come to pass. I am thinking something like mastodon is quite good for this task, but of course if anyone has any suggestions or other ideas please share them. Let's get a discussion going, if this seems like a good idea to you write your thoughts about what you think is the best way to go about it, and if it seems like a not so good idea share those thoughts and reasonings too!
Hey everyone. Today I started noticing some people from eviltoast.org spamming the same message over and over again in comment sections (might even be the same person). I took a look at their instance and it doesn't seem to be a very old instance, and it seems like its not a bad place, except for this spammer. I already blocked one account but not too long after encountered the account in the link above. So after I block this guy too, and after reading this [comment thread](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/comment/6531649) it seems its a bot and they will simply be back with more accounts. What do we do in this situation? Is the only option to simply block them every time we encounter one of their accounts?
It looks like it may be related to new comments, but they're not yellow every time. I just went on a post with "23 [Comments] (10 new)", but only one is yellow. I'm using the darkly theme. I find it annoying because I can't easily see if something is a top-level comment or a second level comment. Reloading unyellows them.
I was recently made aware that XMPP supports account integration with various fediverse platforms (including lemmy for `Ejabberd`). I have long been looking for a proper chat platform that works with the fediverse and was more than disappointed by my experience with matrix. I don't know if there are other people interested in this so I'm making this post to see if there is any interest here locally. I haven't used XMPP yet; but I'd definitely be willing to give it a shot if I could use it with one of my already existing fediverse accounts.
Happy new year to everyone! May it be filled with happiness and good health for you and your loved ones :)
The instance seems to work on PC after a relog but it's completely broken on my mobile client. Probably because it keeps a token and refuses to ditch it or something Were there changes in the login mechanism?
Hi everyone! Wishing you all a happy holiday season, whatever it is you celebrate. For me, it's the solstice. Do you have a holiday in particular? What do you do to celebrate?
What is our instance's status with regards to threads? Is there a simple way for a non-owner/admin to check such things for their respective instance?
Looks like there's a new tool out to help federate new communities that don't have anyone subscribed from a given instance yet. [@soeren@iusearchlinux.fyi](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/u/soeren) [@MouseWithBeer@iusearchlinux.fyi](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/u/MouseWithBeer) [@binary@iusearchlinux.fyi](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/u/binary) shall we add this instance to it? I feel it would help people on this instance to discover new communities.
Is anyone else experiencing this? The posts section in my profile appears empty, as well as the community I moderate showing no posts. Ive checked this from Jerboa, Eternity, and browser on desktop and mobile. If I view my profile or the community while not logged in to my account everything shows up normally. Posts on my profile: ![1000004353](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/pictrs/image/b1813079-f548-42c8-a635-f25bd4ac02a5.jpeg) Community posts: ![1000004354](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/pictrs/image/f3fc3ab3-d665-4f83-a30a-b18b8c3bfb99.jpeg)
till 5 minutes ago I thought the domain name was: I, U, search linux
That is all. Everyone I know who has gone on travel without a mask (including myself) in the USA is catching COVID. Mask up, y'all.
I will try to move this server from digital ocean to hetzner tomorrow I will start after I wake up so probably around 8am UTC. I hope it doesn't take too long but it could take a couple of hours. I am not very experienced with this.
I was wondering how many wayland users are here, and what is your gpu? Why not the other? I for one use xorg, because of my ye olden nvidia gpu that does not mesh too well with wayland.
It has been a while since I last made a post questioning things, life has been really busy. But I currently got a little bit of downtime so why not make a new thread again :) So the question is how often do you do updates? Every day? Once a week? Once a month? When XY thing happens? Never? Or is it just completely random?
I've noticed that federation here can be unstable lately - sometimes my comments will federate, and sometimes it won't. An example of a comment I recently made that has not federated: - https://iusearchlinux.fyi/comment/2017031 (my comment) - https://lemmy.world/comment/3163328 (parent comment) An example of a comment I recently made that _has_ federated: - https://iusearchlinux.fyi/comment/2104278 (my comment from this domain) - https://pawb.social/comment/2343226 (my comment from the remote domain) Might want to check the logs in case something's up. I don't think it's to do with the backend or whichever version it's using.
As you have probably noticed we took a pretty hands off approach to moderating this instance. If something is straight up malicious we will remove it, if not we will let the moderators of the respective communities to deal with it. We believe everyone should have the right to their own opinions, even if we don't necessarily agree with them and based on that we have not defederated from any other instance, till now. Yesterday I came across what I would very much consider borderline, if not just straight up CP communities that someone on this server subscribed to. There was not just one single community, there were several on a singular instance. I told Sören about it and the instance has now been defederated and the communities purged. Hopefully there shouldn't be any leftovers of it. I don't imagine anyone having an issue with us doing that, but we just wanted to let you know for fully transparency. We like for people to have access to everything, but some things are just too much (and rightfully illegal).
Hello everyone, Following that thread: https://iusearchlinux.fyi/post/515890, is it still the case? I tried commenting in this post : https://lemmy.world/post/2949072 Comment on my profile: https://iusearchlinux.fyi/comment/1367161 Same for that post: https://lemmy.zip/post/1261543 Comment: https://iusearchlinux.fyi/comment/1367114
Is it just me? My comments don't seem to appear on other instances. I've tried checking using my older accounts (subbed to the same communities and instances) and none of my comments are appearing. Also tried on multiple apps. The issue started just a few days ago, iirc. I was thinking I was blocked/banned, but this happens on multiple instances. What did I do. 😭
as stated in the title, how long after subscribing to a community (when i'm the first one on the instance to do so) does it take to be able to see all upvotes and comments? i subbed to a few and it says all posts have 1 upvote and 0 comments.
It has been a little bit since my last post. I generally post when I am bored at work and the past 2 weeks were busy. Today for a change I am curious about your hardware. Do have a laptop, desktop, both? One, 2, more? Why so many if you got more than 1? What hardware is it in it? Anything you would like to upgrade/change for your use case? Ever ran into any support issues with them? Any Steamdecks or funky hardware around?
Still figuring out how cross-posting works, please forgive me if I bork it up. ![](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/pictrs/image/f650b2f7-7690-4c25-8c33-02edaadc9b15.webp)
I saw this [post](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/post/343535) which is completly unrelated to me making this post btw. The way you sync communities makes a lot of sense when you only want to subscribe to certain communities, but when you want to see what's going on lemmy it's bad. When I scroll through `all` can't shake the feeling that I could be not seeing some interesting posts. This is not only a problem that small instances have. I checked lemmy.ml and it had some posts missing from `all: new` that we can see. But this could also be because of defederating. This problem is even worse with nsfw communities. They don't show up when not logged in, so looking on other instances is useless. And the community search site in the sidebar doesn't work well and doesn't show nsfw, although lemmyverse.net works fine. So what I'm saying is who on this instance is going to subcribe to furry porn, jk
!free_nyp_music@iusearchlinux.fyi For context, [the MusicBrainz community has a thread for music downloads that are legally free](https://community.metabrainz.org/t/share-your-links-to-legal-free-music-downloads/611998), including name-your-price that's common on Bandcamp. I thought it'd be an interesting community that'd work here and across Lemmy. This sorta thing helped me discover new music I wouldn't have heard otherwise. I'm posting some free/NYP releases I know of right now, but if you know of any music that fits the bill, do post it there! I'm going to give it time before I post it to New Communities on lemmy.world.
Saw a post about a user saying he enjoys reading the modlogs for some reason. So I went ahead and checked it out which got me thinking... Have we deleted/censored anything in this instance yet? Have we banned anyone yet? Anyone willing to take one for the team/instance? (The last line was a joke. Don't ban me plis.)
At first I thought it might be that XSS vulnerability, and someone used it to force people into some communities. But then I noticed all the subs are on this instance. Maybe it is a local database error. The subs I definitely didn’t ask for are: Teardrop…trailers, Hardstyle, Geohints, geo games, and Seventeen (lol).
Been using Apple Music lately since the experience is better than Spotify in some places. Searched the community browsers, couldn't find anything, so I decided to start one here. Is it odd that an Apple Music community is being hosted on a Linux-centric instance? Maybe. But hey, Android counts as Linux, right? :^) !applemusic@iusearchlinux.fyi
Soo.. Apologies if this is in the wrong place. Still new and unfamiliar to Lemmy. 😊 I could not find a specific vm community, so chat is hopefully ok? Posting this with Jerboa on iusearchlinux.fyi (hopefully?) I have an issue with booting a windows vm from a physical drive and I hope this community might be able to help. I run arch on my desktop where I have 2 nvme drives. One with Linux and the other with win10. This us the first time I am using systemd-boot for dual boot setup. I normally use grub but this I went with systemd. Possibly a mistake... I have used these drives and the win10 install with several Linux installs over the years on this motherboard. Both as a dual boot, but also for vfio virtual machine. This works like a charm. But not this time... Dual boot works great, but the vm boot is not working atm. I normally pass the entire windows drive to qemu, pass the spare Nvidia card and if we go. Usually controlled with looking-glass. It's sweet and work like a charm. But for some reason I cannot boot the windows drive like this anymore. I suspect systemd-boot does something but I am not familiar enough to tell for sure. Anyone with a similar setup with a success story to share? Is this possible with systemd? Or is my best bet to go back to grub? Cheers all!
Yesterday I turned on 2FA but the link didn't come up after I saved. So I unchecked 2FA and saved again. Today I deleted my browser history after hacking but I can't log in now. It wants me to enter 2FA Token.
We also removed all custom emojis :( Sorry guys for making you all log in again. As far as I can tell no admin was affected by the hack. Still some users could be compromised. This is why we regenerated the JWT secret so all sessions are invalidated. Also we try to avoid the web client for now. There seems to be a bug when viewing this instance: ![](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/pictrs/image/f2dade9f-cfa7-48f9-a083-a26537302680.png) (Heh, it's at least way better than accessing lemmy.world right now...)
Basically the title. Here's a quick background, though (because I have nothing better to do today). Suffered a failed EOS update on my laptop and it refused to boot. Rather than fix it, I decided to do something I've been thinking about for a while now: I installed NixOS (I still use Arch on my VM, btw). Problem is it's been a bit long since I last set up my laptop I can't remember everything I did on it. Lol. So what do you guys install after changing distros? What are your must-have applications (for any distro)? I'm already running zen kernel, got bitwarden up and running, hardened firefox and installed ungoogled chromium. Seems there's no standalone pihole (yet?) for Nix so I'll be checking that out as well. Thanks in advance for your input!

Last week I was asking [about when and why you started using Linux](https://iusearchlinux.fyi/post/179921), thank you everyone who took their time to write an answer! It was interesting to read all of your guys stories and I was surprised just how far back some of them go. Now I am curious about your guys DE/WMs. What do you use? What do you like/don't like about it? What have you tried? What is you go to? Any you absolutely can not stand the sight of? Any that you tried that disappointed you? Once again no judgment, just curious about peoples experiences.
Hey there. Like many of us I'm new to lemmy, and have also never really moderated anything before elsewhere. I'm thinking about starting a community here, but I don't really have the time or willpower to moderate a community if it starts to grow too much. It could be nice if there were others that wanted to help out down the line, but I'm unsure if they'll be able to if they don't have an account on this instance. Does anyone know? My feeling is that it probably doesn't matter, but I'm unsure. Also, just out of curiosity, is it possible to make communities on other instances?
