I brought up broccoli specifically because I recently wanted to know the nutrition facts of broccoli, and the initial google results were for 1 cup, and not 100g as is standard in I guess everywhere that uses metric. I have absolutely no idea how much broccoli that is, not only because I'm not used to it, but the dimensions of the cup and how finely chopped the broccoli is matter quite a lot in terms of how much actual broccoli we're talking about. It's just so ambiguous.

Perhaps that's because it's what you know best and are used to. Volumetric measurements of anything that doesn't have a fixed density make no sense to me. What the hell is one cup of broccoli? Even a cup of flour can have wildly different ammounts of flour. My least favorite though is butter, how the hell am I supposed to measure out 3 tablespoons of butter? Melt it all on the stove and pour out what I need? I find it incredibly unintuitive.

You have misunderstood what I wrote. I said nothing about an employee purchasing a flag, I said that they would not be permitted to raise one, as they are a resource that is paid for by the act.
I think it's "asinine and childish" to be so rude, especially when it's you that has made the mistake.
mypasswordistaco 6 months ago • 50%
Right, but the public employee is being paid for by the funds that are covered by the act. Therefore if an employee raises the flag, funds are being used to display a non-state flag.
Edit: To be clear, I have not suggested that an employee of the state wouldn't be allowed to purchase a flag. The way I read the act, an employee would not be allowed to raise a flag because they themselves are a resource paid for by the act.
mypasswordistaco 6 months ago • 100%
I would think that the "or display" part prohibits a public employee from raising the flag.

Hi Lemmy, I'm in the market for a new phone as my galaxy S10+ that I've had for ~5 years has a dying screen. I haven't really been paying attention to the market in the same number of years, so I"m not sure what to go for and I would really appreciate your recommendations! I'm very interested in the Nothing phone 2, but it's just at the edge of my price range so I'm trying to see if I can find something that scratches the same itch, both in specs and form factor (but I'm sure that's too much to ask). Any advice would be appreciated!

What if I want to use my absolute freedom to oppress someone else? What if I use my absolute freedom to build a structure that blocks the view of the mountains from my neighbors, who love the view? Whose freedom should get oppressed to solve that?
Honest question, not trying to be a contrarian.

I think it's unfortunate that you're being so hostile. It was an interesting point and very good sources that you brought to the discussion. But you've decided to play the "you're all 'autists' " card.

I disagree. The connotation and literal meaning of the phrase "doing better than", combined with the comment on social circles indicates that they're trying to suggest the poor are somehow doing well, whatever that means.
That's how I read it, anyway. And I think that's why they're getting down voted as well.
mypasswordistaco 6 months ago • 92%
I think the wording in your original comment is pretty misguided. Nowhere does it say the poor are "doing better than" the wealthy. They just had the strongest short-term wage growth since covid. This does not equate to prosperity. Perhaps it is you that has the restrictive social circle.
Hey there! I'm a chemical physicist who has been using python (as well as matlab and R) for a lot of different tasks over the last ~10 years, mostly for data analysis but also to automate certain tasks. I am almost completely self-taught, and though I have gotten help and tips from professors throughout the completion of my degrees, I have never really been educated in best practices when it comes to coding. I have some friends who work as developers but have a similar academic background as I do, and through them I have become painfully aware of how bad my code is. When I write code, it simply needs to do the thing, conventions be damned. I do try to read up on the "right" way to do things, but the holes in my knowledge become pretty apparent pretty quickly. For example, I have never written a class and I wouldn't know why or where to start (something to do with the __init__ method, right?). I mostly just write functions and scripts that perform the tasks that I need, plus some work with jupyter notebooks from time to time. I only recently got started with git and uploading my projects to github, just as a way to try to teach myself the workflow. So, I would like to learn to be better. Can anyone recommend good resources for learning programming, but perhaps that are aimed at people who already know a language? It'd be nice to find a guide that assumes you already know more than a beginner. Any help would be appreciated.

If anything it'll be below 100 due to altitude. For example salt water for making pasta boils still at approx 100 deg. C. It takes quite a lot of salt (way more than you would ever want to consume) to meaningfully raise the boiling point.
mypasswordistaco 6 months ago • 91%
You must be at altitude. That definitely makes a difference for the boiling point, but of course water freezes at 0. Impurities that you'll encounter in tap water, for example, will not have a large effect on freezing point.
Even if it was different by a few degrees, how does that make the scale any less intuitive?

Ah yes, okay I see what you're saying. I think I'm very fortunate to have a couple of friends who care about media the way that I do, and we know each other's tastes and take recommendations seriously. I have a lot of other friends that are absolutely not like that, so I guess it's an individual sorta thing ya know.
mypasswordistaco 6 months ago • 100%
Yeah I just don't take it personally. I get what it's like, people have their tastes and aren't necessarily quick to try something on a recommendation. Honestly I don't think it's something you can really expect of people, and certainly it shouldn't be so transactional.

Quite some years ago I offhandedly recommended a band to a friend, and like a week later she texted me thanking me for the recommendation, and gave me her thoughts. I thought that was really cool of her, because it's all too common that recommendations are ignored. I decided then that I would do my best to actually follow up on recommendations from friends and then try to let them know what I thought. It's a practice that's generally very well received.
I also then decided to be more honest about whether or not I actually will check something out. For example, I don't really listen to podcasts so I'm pretty upfront with people that it's not likely I'll listen to whatever they recommend. I think it's had a ripple effect of generally being more honest in my relationships, which has been transformative. I highly recommend it.

You're straw-manning. No one is advocating for flooding the country with foreign money. I've been reading your comments and I think you might be misunderstanding the argument. It's a more nuanced criticism about capitalism, not an argument for how much workers for foreign companies in the Philippines should be paid.

Finland's recent closing of the eastern border had nothing to do with homeless flocking to available housing, and everything to do with attempts at destabilization by Russia. Do not use this as ammunition for your arguments, as they come from an obvious place of ignorance.
Finland's housing first policy has been in place for over 15 years. You talk about it as if it just started. A country can not only manage just fine with these policies, but can thrive.

I read the article. It was entertaining, and there's definitely a lot of truth in what they write, but I found the whole thing to be, very ironically, over simplified. I think what bothers me the most is the author assumes/implies that human empathy does not extend beyond our line of sight. As if it's impossible for me to be considerate towards people I don't know. Which is complete bullshit. Their arguments seem to assume that a general sense of morality does not exist amongst people.
I, personally, believe that most people are good and value being good. Certainly there are plenty that do not, but I believe they are the minorty. Fortunately my gripes with the article don't really discount the main point being made, it just suggests that things aren't as simple as the author tried to make it seem.

What do you imagine these "strict regulations" would be? I live in public housing right now and it's fantastic. It's also significantly more democratically run than private housing because it's mandated to be that way. I also like knowing that nobody is profiting off of my need to live somewhere.

If you're gunna use an adapter anyway then it makes it irrelevant whether or not there's a headphone jack in the phone. People in this thread talk about how you can't use expensive wired headphones with your mobile devices anymore as if adapters don't exist.

I think the problem is less timing the messages, and more that the messages from earth will just get redshifted more and more as the ship accelerates, which will require an ever larger antenna to pick up. This also has the affect of bandwidth tending towards 0.

You cannot transmit information through entangled particles, so probably not.
I noticed there was no physics-specific communities (at least that I could find) so I went ahead and made one! My idea is that it'll be a community for all people with an interest in physics to discuss, ask questions, and share knowledge. Come post stuff you find interesting! You can check us out at one of these two links that may or may not work: [Physics](/c/physics@iusearchlinux.fyi) !physics@iusearchlinux.fyi
I was inspired by someone's username and found this video. A video much like this one was one of the things that got me into studying physics to begin with over a decade ago. The characteristic blue glow is caused by [Cherenkov radiation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherenkov_radiation), which is analogous to a sonic boom, but instead of a jet breaking the sound barrier, it's charged particles moving faster than the phase velocity of light in a medium (normally water). Pretty cool, I think.
Not strictly physics related, but who's gunna stop me?
Let me preface this by saying I am not at all well versed in QM, but I've just recently finished a course that took us through most of Griffiths and I have some thoughts. The thing that blows me away the most about QM isn't necessarily all the standard "weirdness", like tunneling and superposition and whatever, but rather that all of this weirdness can be accurately described by (mostly) *pre-existing mathematics*. Linear algebra was a growing, but already established field, and the concept of abstract linear vector spaces, and later Hilbert space, came just before and evolved alongside QM. The fact that we discovered a mathematical language before finding out what that language could describe just blows my mind. I understand this isn't the first time the maths came before the physics, but considering how groundbreaking and unintuitive the theory is I think that fact is quite exceptional. Even more so is that we can use this mathematical formalism to *derive physically observable phenomena*. I don't know if you get what I mean, but wow. I think that's nuts haha
Hey there. Like many of us I'm new to lemmy, and have also never really moderated anything before elsewhere. I'm thinking about starting a community here, but I don't really have the time or willpower to moderate a community if it starts to grow too much. It could be nice if there were others that wanted to help out down the line, but I'm unsure if they'll be able to if they don't have an account on this instance. Does anyone know? My feeling is that it probably doesn't matter, but I'm unsure. Also, just out of curiosity, is it possible to make communities on other instances?
Hey there, loving the app! I've noticed that anytime I tap a blurred image to show it, my feed will jump down past the image, without showing it. If I scroll back up and tap again it will show and behavior returns to normal for that image. This happens once for each NSFW image on my feed. I'm assuming this is a bug, or am I doing something weird? Bonus question: is it possible to access your account settings via the app? I can't seem to find the option. Thanks!
Anyone else notice that you can still access reddit through rif if you're not logged in? I noticed after opening the app out of habit haha. You can even view NSFW content, so I'm not really sure what's going on.
