I actually did this **dd if=(running system root volume) of=(local usb attached hard drive file) ** This gives me a full disk backup that would be no worse than if power got yanked. (I know laptops have batteries, for this case we are pretending to be a desktop with no UPS)

Even for a home system? Not a fleet of data center servers. I am currently using rsync to backup /home/<<user>>/ to the ssh server. I tend to make a lot of changes to the base Debian/KDE install.
What is the best way to back up as much as possible of Debian 12 on my laptop to a server that has SSH available? I am currently backing up my users /home/<homedir> folder, but I would like to be able to nuke and restore the system from a backup. I have ventoy on an external drive if that helps any. P.S. I would like to be able to do incremental backups too.

Is there some difference in Wayland that would prevent bash from running the same startup as bash under X? Why would bash not run .bashrc if running under Wayland?
waspentalive 10 months ago • 100%
I took a moment to swich back to wayland, and tried "Task Manager" (I was using "Icons only Task Manager") both are showing this issue which is resolved by switching back to X.
waspentalive 10 months ago • 100%
The issue shows up under Wayland, not X. With X everything is working ok. I have yet to try a different Task Manager under Wayland though.
waspentalive 10 months ago • 100%
Here is the problem.
I had been running X before last night. I switched to Wayland just before knocking off. When I started again today I was now running Wayland. I just now switched back to X and now my icon for kpat works properly.
Is there some issue with the Icons-Only Task Manager under Wayland?
I was going back to Wayland because it seems important Distros are dropping X. I should be running under Wayland because at some point I will have to. I am back on X for now.

I have rebooted and now my path seems correct:
rhudson@adam:~$ echo $PATH /home/rhudson/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games
I can type "kpat" at the command line and it launches.
But when I click the icon in the task manager it still says it can't find the program 'kpat'
waspentalive 10 months ago • 100%
I have included this line in my .bash_profile:
export PATH="$HOME/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/local/games:/usr/games"
In the very last line.
My PATH still looks like this:
rhudson@adam:~$ echo $PATH /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin
What could be changing my path after .bash_profile gets its say?
I am also adding it now to the last line of .bashrc

I have only worked with .txt files and .odt (libre Office files) for the past few days. I have done updates as offered, but I have not installed anything, and I have not edited any system file as far as I can remember (before this morning, see below for a troubleshooting step taken).
And I have played Minecraft and watched Youtube and Freetube.
When I noticed this happening (by trying to launch kpat this morning) I went to look at /etc/profile and added /etc/games to the id=0 part of the path setting and that did not help any so I removed it again. - something is setting the path to SU's path along the way but I don't know what.
It has been on / off this morning. One moment I can get in, later I get a "try refreshing your browser or come back later" screen. Right now It is back, it had been gone a moment ago.

I have tried on a Dell Latitude 7390, it gets past the load-up icons screen at the start but then goes to a panic. Right now that machine is running a Linux and also has Haiku in a VM, has FreeDOS in dosbox, and has an apple II e emulator. Emulation and VMs to visit the past.

As fill-in ads are a vector for computer viruses and other malware I for one will NOT be disabling my ad blocker unless YouTube is willing to provide a lifetime subscription to something like Life Lock and make me whole for anything lost to whatever malware arrives as a part of an ad.
Where else can I watch sci-show, Linus-tech-tips, and all the other channels I subscribe to?

I see. Of course. That would mean the onboarding effort would have to ask a bunch of questions and each of the target instances would have to be able to describe their wants and don't wants. This could get much too complicated I guess.

I can only speak for myself - I don't want to have to package and mail the things I am getting rid of. They don't have much monetary value, but I feel good someone needed it and is using it.
There are scams that sellers have to deal with like the scammer that will send a bogus check to pay for the thing and ask for change back. You deposit the check and a small number of weeks later your bank takes back the money because the check was bad. The scammer gets their 'change' back and the item they bought. You get left with a possibly negative bank account.

It's like the Ikea lamp commercial. A person has a well-used lamp they have had for a long time. They go to Ikea and find a new lamp that is better and nicer. In the next scene, the old lamp is left on the curb. In the rain. alone. abandoned. The Ikea person comes on and asks "Do you feel bad for the old lamp?"
I only hope we eventually have some of the local communities that were subreddits of yore - like SacramentoBuyNothing - a place to share your old lamp so it does not have to sit out in the rain at the curb.> waspentalive

Please can we have a "BuyNothing" or "Freecycle" Comunity? One for each city/region/area would be better but If needed we could have just one where post titles contain the location (SacramentoCA) before anything else. Then sorting / Searching would weed out the unwanted due to distance items.

The story of WasPentalive - My normal avatar is a depiction of the R-Pentamino in John Conway's game of life. A 5 cell arrangement that throws off a number gliders in different directions. In one account I was simply PentaLive (Penta = 5 Live=the game of life) but I lost the password to that account at the same time as I no longer had access to the email address I registered. So I had to create a new account - I was Pentalive so I became WASPentalive.
Did I misunderstand the question?
