For me, Windows 11 mandatory account, and Internet on setup. Yes there are bypasses, yes I could upgrade from 10. But where I'm from, having the internet isn't always a given.

So imagine dropping $500-$1000 on a new laptop booting it up for the first time, and learning that its now a brick since Windows refuses to let you use it since you have no internet. No Pro license can unbork you from this.

Even MacOS isn't that dumb (for now).

The account thing is a personal beef I have with windows. I.e. my PC my account, why does it need to be online, I have no reason for it.

So my plan was to migrate to FOSS or proper cross platform software for work, see if Linux works, and if it doesn't move to MacOS. So far Linux Mint has been stable.

Another thing which helped me was switching my Laptop first before my Desktop since if I had problems (which I did) I could loose my laptop and not worry about data loss.

As of now, I am 2 year with Linux on my laptop and 6 months on my desktop with no noticeable difference between my Windows experience and Linux.

    Moving truck Bet win rule

So I am moving 14 hours to a new place with my SO, and got into a debate with my Dad about fuel efficiency. I argued that since we were towing the car it would be more fuel efficient than driving the 2 vehicles separate. He disagreed that it would be less since the truck would be working harder since it’s pulling both the car and the trailer. Especially since the vehicle we are towing is a Yaris. Since we were picking up the trailer in the next state over, we got both data for driving both vehicles and towed. So I just crunched the numbers, on hilly terrain pulling the truck was 11% more efficient. While on flat terrain it was 20% more efficient. While I was happy to win my bet, my dad decided to sour my victory by changing one parameter. Did we save money? Since we knew the ratio of how much more efficient the moving truck was to the car, we could estimate how much gas the Yaris would’ve used to drive the distance. The result: Car would’ve sucked back $60 worth of gas while the trailer rental cost around $200. So while I won the bet, I lost the war. 😭

Timeshift just saved my Mint Install

Well this was a fun way to start my day. I was trying to install Davinci Resolve on my Mint PC (since Mint 22 broke some of Resolves dependencies), and it was still giving the warning of missing dependencies. One of the dependencies libasound2 couldn't install but apt recommended 2 others. Tried both and non worked. So I decided to uninstall both, and then Cinnamon Setting disappeared. I tried to fix it by reinstalling Cinnamon itself, but yeah... on reboot it would crash on the Mint file check. However after trying the Recovery mode to get access to the terminal. I was able to access Timeshift, get the backup from yesterday and I'm back up and running. So happy I enabled Timeshift. Hurray for safety nets actually working to protect me from myself.

Lightburn is ending support for Linux after v1.7 forum.lightburnsoftware.com

I just got an email about this today. Here is more context: To our valued Linux users: After a great deal of internal discussion, we have made the difficult decision to sunset Linux support following the upcoming release of LightBurn 1.7.00. Many of us at LightBurn are Linux users ourselves, and this decision was made reluctantly, after careful investigation of all possible avenues for continuing Linux support. The unfortunate reality is that Linux users make up only 1% of our overall user base, but providing and supporting Linux-compatible builds takes up as much or more time as does providing them for Windows and Mac OS. The segmentation of Linux distributions complicates these burdens further — we've had to provide three separate packages for the versions of Linux we officially support, and still encounter frequent compatibility issues on those distributions (or closely related distributions), to say nothing of the many distributions we have been asked to support. Finally, we will soon begin building LightBurn on a new framework that will require our development team to write custom libraries for each platform we support. This will be a significant undertaking and, regrettably, it is simply not tenable to invest our team's time into an effort that will impact such a small portion of our user base. Such challenges will only continue to arise as we work to expand LightBurn's capabilities going forward. We understand that our Linux users will be disappointed by this decision. We appreciate all of our users, and assure you that your existing license will still work with any version of LightBurn for which your license term is valid, up until LightBurn version 1.7.00, forever. Prior releases will always be made available for [download](https://lightburnsoftware.us13.list-manage.com/track/click?u=b2237a387b92c450992adebf6\&id=266f1f65f8\&e=655c28ba05). Finally, your license will continue to be valid for future Windows and Mac OS releases covered by your license term. If you are a Linux-only user who has recently purchased a license or renewal that is valid for a release of LightBurn after v1.7.00, please contact us for a refund. Rest assured that we will be using the time gained by sunsetting Linux support to redouble our efforts at making better software for laser cutters, and beyond. We hope you will continue to utilize LightBurn on a supported operating system going forward, and we thank you for being a part of the LightBurn community. Sincerely, The LightBurn Software Team

It tracks it but since eBay uses the term "used" for all the category its hard to tell the difference between the box vs box+power+av vs box+controllers+power+av

Sometimes it comes with crappy third party controllers other times it comes with one legit and the other is a madcatz

So its a bit unreliable for exact prices, but good enough to get a feel for what bit should be worth.

I like giving the seller the benefit of the doubt, not everyone can be on their a game everyday.

Honestly while eBay was a nuisance it understandable why it’s set up this way. I was on the other side of this where we shipped a thing and the buyer claimed it never arrived. Which we later proved it did. And considering how rare or hard to find some items are it’s a good service.

That said I support local sellers in my area before I check eBay. Then eBay but local to my country, the international if the price is right.

My experience with eBay Buyer Protection

I’ve been buying games off of eBay before I’ve ever owned a credit card, and its web page could render on a PSP. Over the years I’ve purchased consoles, rare games, and common guff for my game library with virtually no issues. Obviously eBay is full of scams and I’ve purchased my fair share of crap from china which either didn’t work, or never arrived, and grew to look at local sellers with returns or a good reputation. I’ve always saw the eBay Buyer Protection and thought it was neat, and that I’d never use it. Oh boy was a wrong. Last month I found a console going for an insane price, not too low that it would’ve been an immediate red flag, but good though that I didn’t worry about the sellers non existent returns. The system looked good in the photos and the seller feedback looked legit. The only weird thing was the description was written by AI (eBay is pushing it and it’s as useless as you can imagine), but the condition was used, so I got it. When it arrive the console was dirty as it was in photos. But nothing that a bit of elbow grease can’t fix. Then I noticed the ports were a bit dirty, and there was signs that it was opened by an ape before I got it. So I got my new cables, purchased separately since it wasn’t coming with any, plugged her in and… nothing. No light, no life. Took the system apart myself and the insides of the console was a complete mess. Rust and corrosion everywhere, so much I thought it was used as a boat anchor at some point. Or the side of the road in the rain. So I contacted the seller and asked them for a refund. They offered to exchange it, and thought to play ball… 2 days later the other system was missing. Suuurreee. I gave them an offer for a partial refund. Saying hey, this is so broken it’s not with the return shipping. Why don’t we compromise and you give me a return minus the amount it would cost me to return it and we’ll call it even. I paid $92 and I offered $67. They then offered me $27. Nope going full refund. Then they went silent with no messages or instructions. I escalated it with eBay, who gave them 3 option, pay for return shipping and refund me when it arrives, I pay for shipping and they reimburse me, then I got the rest of the money back, or we figure something else out. They opted for the first option. I printed the label and I waited for their currier to pick it up. The seller also gave no instructions but thankfully tracking had enough info from the tracking label I knew what was happening. Then the day arrived for the parcel picked up, and the currier was a no show. I checked the label and the address was wrong. Despite it showing up. Informed the seller, and they canceled the label. But ghosted me again. EBay got back to me and told me the case will default in 3 day if it was not picked up. Then 3 days passed and I had to reach out to eBay again, who tried to restart the process. At this point I was frustrated and told them it’s been 3 weeks since I started this return claim, please either refund me or escalate this. I got my refund that afternoon. What I learned about eBay buyer protection is this. It works, but it’s work too. It’s quite fair to the seller, but its resolution is heavily in the buyers favor. My only advice is for buyers who’ve been scammed like I was, is to keep on top of your eBay rep, as replies are handed in a shared pool, and the support agent is not going to look back on the case history. TL:DR got scammed on eBay, got money back from eBay buyer protection, however it took 3 weeks and keeping on top of eBay support.

I got my first taste of Modern Xbox.

The last time I touched Xbox was with the 360, and only because I needed to test used games to sell on eBay. But I've wanted to try out modern Xbox to see if things like GamePass and what exclusives they do have is worth it. Especially since on the used market, Xbox One games can be cheaper than PS4 games. With the loose justification of buying Conkers Bad Fur Day as my target price I bought Rare Replay and a Xbox One. --- Console Hardware --- The Xbox I got was the Original Xbox One, mostly because it was cheap, and because I got [the Halo 5 version](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/7d989922-2433-4ac2-a05c-15f5be410bbb.jpeg). I don't play Halo, but I love the aesthetics and blue accents. I wanted the Xbox One S since it's smaller and I like the design better. But I had a hard rule of "not buying white" and the color variants aren't as appealing. From first boot to getting my games installed, I can tell a lot of care an attention went into the hardware and the UI. Might be my imagination, but the interface feels snappier than it does on PS4. And the store is actually usable and not bloated like Sony tends to do later into a console life cycle. I wish there was more customization to the menu, but there is a clear aesthetic which Xbox wanted to have for their console, and I can respect that. The Xbox One controller has now become the "default" controller for me. Everything targets it, and since it now has a functional d-pad (looking at you 360), it's good. I prefer the musher feeling of a Nintendo D-Pad and shoulder buttons (or bumper as Xbox calls them). But it's a solid controller and with using AA batteries rather than LiPo, it'll last as long as I take care of it. I really like the overall package. The only thing I wish I could do is test the HDMI In on the system. But I am pretty sure it's broken or defective. No a problem for a Games Box, but it is annoying. --- Games --- I got my Xbox One for one game, Rare Replay. And if I am honest, it plays fine. While I will praise Xbox for not mucking about with the interface there is no denying that this is a game box from 2013. Games play just as well as they do on PS4, and has the same level of support as the PS4 does. I feel it's interesting that all games even disc ones install to the system. As I know not all games on PS4 like LittleBigPlanet 3 still run parts of the game from the disc itself. Overall the quality of Xbox One was about as much as I expected it to be. No worse than PS4, and maybe better at times. --- Game Pass --- Nah the big draw for me was two thing, Game Pass and Backwards Compatibility (which is the next section). Game Pass to me has always been the much needed revival of game rentals. For a modest fee, you get access to a treasure trove of games from just about everyone. And I got to try just about every game I wanted to try for my system. To build a list of games I wanted to play/try. Unfortunately for Xbox, many of the Game Pass games I've played, like Nickelodeon All Stars 2, Physconaughts 2, and Persona 3 Reloaded, are games I feel I want to play on other consoles or PC's. I liked them, but I don't want them to be tied down to the system. While other times they offered me experiences to stay away from, or confirmed that they were games I wouldn't like. But there are a few games which I honestly didn't think of or needed to play myself which I will be populating my Xbox with, and maybe even moving over to Xbox for. Like Sunset Overdrive, Halo 5, and Forza Horizons 5. Heck I tried Assassin's Creed Origin's and honestly I prefer to play it on Xbox rather than PS4. Plus the benefit I can have all the original games on one system is really tantalizing. Especially since the original 4 games can be found at bargain bin pricing at any good thrift store. --- Backwards Compatibility --- Which neatly brings me to Backwards compatibility. Like the native games, disc games are installed via the web rather than run off of disc. And I am fine with that. And it runs soooo well. Honestly I feel it's worth owning an Xbox One for the Backwards Compatibility alone. Sure not every game works. But most of the ones you'll want to play are here. I've been replaying the crap out of Saints Row 2, and finally getting the chance to enjoy Saints Row 1. Or at least I was until the Xbox Servers went down. --- Online --- Now I've always known Xbox as the online gaming console. For the guys looking for achievements and playing Call of Duty with friends. But that's not me. I just want to play Rare Replay and other single player games. But man has online gaming on consoles gotten bad since I last checked on PS3. I couldn't even start EA's Star Wars Battlefront II, with them demanding I make an account with them (or link my Xbox one to theirs). Most Xbox games I played almost expect you to be playing online and have that lobby menu thingy along side it. Guys I just want to play Halo, I don't even have the friends to even try co-op with. Nope, but what killed any recommendation for this system was when Xbox's servers went offline, and my Xbox immediately turned into a brick. Sure I could look at things. But no game I installed would boot, not even my disc games and the system won't work unless I am signed in. Even my backwards compatible games refused to load a save until I remounted the "cloud storage". On PS4 or Switch this isn't an issue, but if it was, one could make a Guest account, or an offline account. But that's not possible on Xbox. It's required that any account on any Xbox has to have a Microsoft account attached with it. Even for kids. This wasn't a requirement on 360, and I remember Microsoft being a laughing stock of E3 2013 with their whole, "online only thing" and "Discs being locked to a single console". And while we didn't get the latter, I am shocked that the Xbox community is OK with the former. But I wouldn't blame Xbox for this, as this decision has corporate Microsoft's hand prints all over it. Mandatory log in are now apart of even Windows 11. Ads taking up the lower third of your screen is also being baked into other aspects of Microsoft's software too. --- Conclusion --- And what's tragic is that this strong arming is hurting the end user experience on their hardware. I can't in good faith recommend an Xbox to friends or family, especially since if they want their kids to play Minecraft, they have effectively two choices. Let Microsoft track their kids and their every movement, or give their kids access to daddy's credit card since they have to use his account. But as I said, I don't blame the Xbox team for this, I blame corporate Microsoft. And for the services and continuing support for what is a 10+ year old console at this point. I am extremely impressed. Xbox One is still an extremely viable system in 2024 and I don't feel it's been outright abandoned like other systems of it's age, like the Wii U. Honestly who I would recommend an Xbox to is the same demographic I use to see playing Xbox, teenagers. It's cheaper than a PC, plays almost all of the same games, and if they want to play online they'll need to jump through the same hoops. And unlike Sony or Nintendo, who've destroyed their previous game console's library during the transition to newer hardware. I feel I can at least trust that Microsoft will continue to bring forward their game library to whatever they do next. Yes Sony has more exclusives. But that's quickly becoming a very short list, as they've languished in the years which the PS4 has had dominance. So If you don't want a PC which is the only other hardware with a larger game catalogue, or don't want to deal with the shoehorned in third party drm for every publisher. Then the Xbox isn't a bad platform to invest into, especially if you want to explore new games you want to try that's available on Game Pass.

I have a Poco X3 Pro running custom android. Running a phone with custom Android is the only way I can run the OS now. I have a Xiaomi Redmi Note 4x which has finally given up the ghost that started with Android 6 and I can install Android 14. What killed it was the screen delaminating from the digitizer probably because of battery swelling.

With that being said, I know my next phone is probably going to be an iPhone. Unlocking phones these days is not as easy as it use to be, and many of my issues of iOS of the past are gone. The only thing I am waiting on is that third party app store support.

If I was to associate it with Linux. The Desktop Environment of iPadOS is excellent and I don't want it to change. But it's missing key features in the kernel or missing key drivers which would make it a better experience.

I've only reverted back for long typing sessions, my hand craps are only just going away now. I need a more sturdy keyboard accessory and I don't think they exists. And since the case is already falling apart, I'll probably just make my own replacement with what I can salvage from here. Need to make a 3D Printable friction hinge that doesn't break and is thin. I have a long list of things I want to do first.

TL:DR Using an iPad as a PC is possible, but only in a limited use case. I feel that for the average user the iPad can be as capable as a PC for them. However apple needs either allow proper third party app stores on their devices. Or add in missing functionality to iPad OS to make it feature parity to Mac OS, like being able to connect with third party devices over USB-C. ----Pre-Ramble My thoughts on an iPad and why I have one---- I think everyone has seen, or at least hear of [this apple add](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3S5BLs51yDQ&pp=ygUXYXBwbGUgd2hhdCdzIGEgY29tcHV0ZXI%3D), where a kid with an iPad asks "what's a computer". This ad has always irritated me since the iPad has never had the same power, let along software or support a traditional PC has ever had. At the time, and up until recently the iPad for me has been a Glorified iPod Touch with a bigger screen. However since then Apple has attempted to make the hardware more computer like, moving from the more conventional A series of chips to their M series for their newer higher end devices. They moved away from lightning to USB-C on the iPads before the European Union forced them across their entire lineup. And with official keyboard accessories and the like, to my eyes the iPad was looking more and more like a Computer, than it use to. I eventually got my own, a 3rd gen iPad Pro when they were discounted. I assumed the M chips would have a long shelf life, which so far has proven correct with iPad OS 18 support promised. It's purpose was for Facetime and iMessage chats with family, but eventually grew to be my Streaming Video player and Web Comic reader. I tried to do more on my iPad to see if it could do more. But every time I found that the App I wanted was behind a subscription paywall, had hidden fees, or was always online. A sad reality as a result of Apple's policies and complete lack of third party app stores. As much as I detest Android tablets, because of services like F-Droid, they have a much more robust software library which I can trust. Even though I do prefer the iPad software library which feels like they were designed for the device. ----Using my iPad as a Computer---- Now the reason I tested to see if I could use my iPad like a PC was because of my useless laptop. It's a Gigabyte U4UD, and it has the worse battery life I've ever seen in a PC. It literally cannot last more than 30 minutes off the charger. Even when the battery was working well, it barely lasted 1-2 hours on a charge. The reason I care about battery life was because I was going to visit my in-laws in the next Provence over. With several hours on the road and no guaranteed power jack near where I'll set up and I needed a device with a battery that will last long enough for me to do some work. And my iPad... was the only device that was left. On paper it could do the work, I've settled on my Office Suite with Apple Works (Pages, Number, Keynote), the default mail client is better than K-9 on android, and for web browsing I just switched over to the Orion Web Browser, and while it's not perfect, it has a much nicer browsing experience than default Safari. So I packed a much smaller bag, and was off on my 4 day trip. I actually didn't charge my iPad the night before, and when we arrived at our first overnight spot it still had a charge. Now if you've used a modern PC with Modern Standby you should know how much of a shock this was to me. And the wins kept coming. I brought along a Pi Media Server for movie nights and it was acting up. I needed to SSH into it to see what was up. I didn't preload anything and a quick google search showed Termius would do the job, and it did. Though I feel my Logitech keyboard case really helped here. My only issue was that I wanted to listen to music on my iPad, and forgot to sync my library via iTunes before I left. No issue I though most Apple app will let you import the files by "sharing" them. So I move a few songs over to test and... no share option. One Google search later revealed that it's not possible. Thanks Apple. Sure I could've used VLC, but I've already dug out my phone at just use that instead. Day 2 we were on a ferry, and I again still haven't charged my iPad. It was around 30% ish I think. And I was able to spend most of that 1.5h ferry ride doing work on my iPad with Pages. Now Apple Work's isn't the best Office Suite, it feels more like Wordpad more than Word. But as it is a proper offline office software I couldn't complain. Google Docs and Word technically work, but are online office suites, which I don't trust to work where the internet isn't a guarantee. Collabora Office would be a good alternative (Libre Office is my goto at home), but it has virtually no compatibility with the iPad keyboard mode. So it's more frustrating to use than helpful. By the time we arrive at our Hotel the iPad had 8% left. God I love M class silicon. But I also got a renewed hatred for iPad OS. We went for Fish and Chips and I got some nice photos on my Phone I wanted to share with those on iMessage. I tried to connect my iPad to my Android phone over USB-C and... nothing. I tried KDE Connect, and I couldn't find it. Why Apple, did I have to upload my pictures to Facebook, download them on my iPad before I could send them to people when my Phone was right there, and I know M chips can talk with Android, because I know MacOS can. Lessons learnt for next time, BRING USB-C FLASH DRIVE TO AVOID APPLE SHENANIGANS. But we got to count our blessing when they happen. Because hey, I was playing The Legend of Zelda Oracle of Ages on my iPad via Delta from the App Store. Sure it wasn't a perfect experience, there was a bug that de-synced audio the longer you played GBC games (no I wasn't using Bluetooth headphones). And I was able to connect my PS Vita to my iPad to move the save over... even if the connection is finicky. Apple really doesn't want you to connect anything to their devices do they? Day 3 was were things got really interesting. Because I saw the light, the iPad started making sense. Sure I can't connect much to it. But when you are woken up by the 5am sun and you don't want to wake your wife sleeping next to you. The last thing you'd want is to mess around with cables and adapters and make too much noise. I got work done in pages, check up and fired off some emails, all while listening to some video and podcast on my browser. I really wish the iPad had a headphone jack, but I've grown use to the USB-C adapters at this point. Even then I took some nice photos the day before and was going to wait and edit them when I got home. But remembered I could do them now since I had Affinity Photo (which was half off). If you don't do much off device work, the iPad can be as capable as any PC. Especially now that most software designed for computers are just websites. Sure you can't code on an iPad, and outside of drawing most professional software is gimped. But if all you do is light office work and web browsing, then the iPad really makes sense, especially on the go. ----Closing thoughts---- Nothing interesting really happened on the last day. But when I got home, I was reminded yet again just how good the battery life was. On this trip the iPad tried to be my PC, and despite a few issues it did almost everything I asked of it. My iPad effectively replaced my phone at our overnight spots, meaning when I went out, my phone actually had a charge. Yeah, it had issues, 2 of them. I couldn't move photos over from my phone to my iPad, and I couldn't add downloaded music to Apple Music. But when I looked at the word I did while I was out, and how I can work around those drawbacks with better planning and a USB-C Flash drive. I think I can forgive it. I am in love with the idea of the iPad for a small form factor travel machine. And it is perfect for that work load. Though when I got home, I tried to use it more, by my hand got cramps with the Logitech keyboard case. So I am back to my laptop/desktop if I need to do actual work. But with a massive move planned for me soon, I am happy to know I can pack away my laptop and lighten my load. ----Extra Notes---- I wanted to make this into a video, but I lost some footage, and I don't think this ramble would've been entertaining to watch. But I still wanted to get my thoughts out somehow.

My reason is that it’s extremely buggy. I find it looses the plot if you are moving more than 1 file at a time, and it often can’t find paired devices even if they are on the same network. Plus it’s over bloated with no default configuration. I.e. I just want to send files. I don’t want it to act as a mouse pointer. And disabling it for each and every device is tedious.

Granted it’s better than any other alternative apps I’ve found. Which is why it’s installed, even on my iPad.

So I moved to Eternity for Lemmy until support dropped. Now I'm on Voyager.

Good apps design keeps me using a platform and I like the slower pace of Lemmy. I still use reddit for time to time especially for smaller communities. But do my part here.

Finally got myself Conkers Bad Furday and it came with a free Xbox

Jokes aside. I wanted to do a fun numbers game and see if I could get an Xbox One and Rare Replay for the price of the N64 copy of Conkers Bad Furday. And it turns out I can. Conkers Bad Furday on N64 costs around $150-$175CAD (before tqx) given the condition and its shipping location. Meanwhile I was able to pick up Rare Replay for $10CAD at my local EB Games, and I was able to find Xbox Ones for as low as $100CAD, but on average around $140CAD. This particular Xbox One was $160 at the end of the day, a bit over budget, but I love the colors and design. Even if I don't play Halo. Totals Xbox One - $121.39 + $25 Shipping + 21.96 tax = $168.35 Rare Replay - $7.99 + $1.20 tax = $9.19 Total - $177.54 CAD

  • the16bitgamer the16bitgamer 2 months ago 100%

For me, Retro gaming has always been the budget option. And outside of a few rare example where the value of the game was about to sky rocket (see Pokemon XD), I usually wait for the price to make sense to me.

For me that price is between $5 and $30 depending on the game, system, and how good that game is.

When I see Cars for the PS2 for $3.99 at a thrift store, I'm not going to say no. But $300 for the SNES version of Chrono Trigger, and the sellers, and the idiots influencers that buy from them, are out to lunch.

For these games with hyper inflated price points like Chrono Trigger, or Conkers Bad Furday, what I usually look at is re-releases or ROM collections. For a game like Conkers, you can literally buy an Xbox One and Rare Replay for less than what the cart is selling for. If you get lucky you might even get OEM controllers.

With most retro games outside of license titles getting remakes, and re-releases you should look at remakes before the original. You can probably build a sizable retro game library from the various ROM collections on steam alone. But if you want to play on the original hardware, I do advocate for Piracy of Hyper Inflated games like Pokemon Emerald. Especially since those scalped prices are not going back to the developers who made it, and Nintendo appears to have no desire to ever re-release them. So in my books they are as good as abandon ware, and one foot in the door to the public domain.

Lots of “old” games i don’t like. But Retro implies Popular, so that narrows it down for me.

If I was to choose, it would be the genera of 3D Collectathons during the N64 and PS1 era. I don’t like the idea of being given a game with no direction and be told find your own fun. The N64 was filled with these games, like Mario 64, and Banjo Kazooie, the PS1 would be like Crash.

The exception to this rule was Spyro which gave the worlds a bit of a story after the first game. Enough to know what to do in a world, so when you stumble into the side distraction you can play them if you want. At times even those have stories.

Got the games years ago for the GBC, and I've always love it. But I always got stuck in a handful of dungeons. Level 3, level 4, level 6, and finally the black tower. But I was finally able to solve it myself with no hints! This is in my view one of the best Zelda games.

I design and 3D Printed the smallest friction hing, I think is possible at 10mm

So I wanted a small, and thin friction hing for another project, and I couldn't find the metal ones that they use for the iPad's Magic Keyboard case. So I design my own the parts I had on my desk. The smallest nut that I had was 4mm wide which really limited how thick the design can be. The result is this ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/8dec6028-c634-423c-b3f8-6b25a9a51287.jpeg) It folds flat at measure at a maximum thickness of about 10mm ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/84a23f3c-d0fe-4410-9bd9-b841a80a2f86.jpeg) It works a lot better than I thought it would, especially since this is my first prototype print. Need to figure out some things, like to stiffen the arms and to prevent/reduce twisting. ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/e74d12e8-860c-45d3-a3e7-ddf588997d93.jpeg) But as a basis to start from this works nicely. I think if I add a TPU washer on the back end, I might be able to get it stiffer and more consistent feeling. But I'll do that at another time.

Finally got Emulators recognizing Steam Inputs during remote play

TL:DR Emulators installed via Flatpak won't recognize steam inputs during remote play, However AppImages will work. So if you want to play PCSX2 via Steam Link from your main rig, install the AppImage version. So this whole journey started when I wanted to play PS2 games from my PC on my Big Screen TV. Years ago I got a Steam Link, and outside of it forgetting my Bluetooth devices it's been quite reliable. However when I switched over to Linux and installed my emulators via Flathub, I could start the emulator, but outside of mouse inputs, the emulator refused to recognize the inputs outside of those directly connected to the PC. I presume it's due to how Flatpaks work. Reported the problem on the Steam Linux Beta github page, but that still left me without a solution. It's not like there exists a *.deb for every emulator, and if there existed one, it was out dated, so it was hit or miss if I could start a game with a controller. However when I tried AppImages, it worked! I presume it's due to the fact that the AppImage runner is a locally installed package, which means it can hook into the systems inputs, like Steam Input. Thus far I've tested PCSX2, DuckStation and Retroarch, and everything appears to be working beautifully!

Was trying out a new stitch to attach leather to my 3D Printed part. I love the results

Here is the reverse side: ![](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/a0f78289-f44b-4b16-ad49-d936391661e0.jpeg) For the long and short of what this is. I make 3D Printable e-reader cases that are held together by stitching cloth or leather. Up to now the cover had the magnet as a part of the design, but with no way to upgrade or change it out. This is my solution for that. With 8 screws and a tight fit, the cover can be swapped out when you upgrade or change out your e-reader. That way you can keep the case itself and just upgrade the components you need when you need it. Still testing it, but very happy with how it turned out.

[P1V2] Quotes and Review 2 Electric Boogaloo

In my continuing adventures of finding quotes in every Bookworm volume for a new web forum, I'm finally over the hump and have started Volume 2... AKA the volume where it gets good. On a side note, I read this on the new Clara BW, while it's a marginal improvement over the Clara 2e, there's a weird bug which prevented me from highlighting lines near the sides and top. This also impact the Clara Color, which is fun. Oh well. ---- Review ---- While Volume 2 is leagues better than Volume 1, it still took me a couple of days to get through it. Better than the multiple weeks that Vol 1 takes me, but not as gripping as future Volumes. I am looking forward to re-reading the swap day. What's good about this volume is that Myne becomes likeable, as her attention moves away from Books to making paper... to make books. Look she's getting there, and she's evolving into a budding Chaos Gremlin. This is also the start of the Merchant chapters, and the beginning of the battles of whit. Which is just sooooo good. The bad, is that the pacing is still about as slow and expositiony as the first volume. It's necessary for first time readers, and I remember lapping it up after watching the anime. But during re-reads it's easy to skim read, and potentially missing something I missed the first time. But man that cliffhanger is a doozy, I do wonder what will happen next. /s ---- Quotes ---- Prologue - ...and explained that in the first place she wasn't expecting much from Myne's efforts. Her expression said that she was dead confident that Myne would fail. [Ouch, Myne does deserve this from Effa, but you should have some faith] - "...It feels like Myne isn't Myne lately. She still gets sick and passes out all the time, but she doesn't cry about this being unfair anymore." [Oh crap, they're onto you Myne! Quick run... I mean walk... umm, never mind, you OK kiddo?] - "She'll become more capable over time, more understanding of her limits, and eventually she'll stop pushing herself too far." [... ummm no she won't and I have Lutz here with evidence to the contrary] Chapter 1 - "How could I not be excited? I mean, we're making paper here! Paper! I can make books with paper. Ahahah yes!" [As you can see from the evidence she will never calm down, all you can do is prepare to weather this storm] - "...Myne, alright, we're making paper. But how are we gonna do it? I've got no clue myself. Don't we need toold or something? Is this gonna work?" Lutz calm questions threw a bucket of cold water over my excitement. [Good on you kiddo, this is why you are the Myne manager] - "Welcome back. Don't feel bad Myne. You'll Be useful to someone Someday." [Ouch that one hurt me, who let Tuuli play with fire] - "Bwuh? Tuuli, what's going on?" [Number 1, our first Bwuh of the Volume] - The problem with making tools? We didn't have the tools to make tools. [Wise words from someone who rarely thinks far enough ahead] - If anyone wanted the shampoo, it would be a girl... A girl?! His wife?! If his beloved wife wants the shampoo, it all makes sense. [Otto your simping so hard even a 6 year old realized it.] - "A merchant has a lot of things he heeds to keep secret so..." "...Can't I start practicing with something easier?" [Myne dear, Lutz is right, having Lutz hide things from Karla is like sending a lv.1 hero to fight the end boss] Chapter 2 - And you can't decline this invitation anyways. If you do, your mom and older sister will probably get fired from their jobs." [Ouch, poor Effa, I am sure Corinna is doing this to good reasons] - "Fear not, Captiain. I take full responsibility for your daughter and will ensure she remains safe." [Unless my wife's involved and I get scammed by a 6 year old. Then it's anyone's guess what happens] - "Oh my, was it not boorish to observe a woman while she's prettying up?" "... I just said that because I didn't want him flirting with you while I was working." "Oh my! Aha, I do wonder how Otto behaves outside of the house, if a little girl such as yourself would fear that from him." [Corinna, you can I both know you don't need to "wonder" to get your answer] - Despite claiming to be so busy, he handled all of the budget season work himself, negotiated with the merchants that came to sell equipment and commodities, exploited his position as city guard to obtain as much information as possible, and so on. [Is Otto what Ferdi would be if he was a Commoner?] - "It's fine. Otto's giving me nails in return for all this." "...Nails? Truly? Is he not selling you short?" [Yes he is sweetie, and no she won't ever realize it] - "Listen, Myne. Would you do me a favor and remember some important errands you have to do?" [Gunther getting an unexpected urge that he should beat up Otto when he gets back] - "If you give me all of them I might be able to think of an excuse that will convince Dad." [And Otto this is why you lost her to Benno] - "Oh? Lutz? What're you doing here?" "Myne?! That's my line! What are you here? Wha? Are you alone?!" [Imagine finding your Grandpa who's stuck in a wheel chair and needs nurses on them 24/7 just sitting in the middle of a kids park and you'll understand Lutz freakout] Chapter 3 - His mom, Karla, was constantly on his back saying that he had given up on becoming a travelling merchant, so why couldn't he give up one more and become a carpenter? [... mother of the year. And the answer is because that sets a bed president and he'll give up on that too, probably out of spite] - Otto lived on the third floor of Corinna's family home, and that has been arranged because her older brother was worried for his cute little sister. In other words. Corinna was Benno's little sister, which makes Otto his... "...You're his brother-in-law?" [Funnily enough 5 parts in and she is still this gullible] - Benno was sitting at an administrator's desk behind which was a shelf crammed with wood boards and pieces of parchment. ...Wait, is that a bookshelf?! [Oh lord, the gremlin is loose! Who forgot the leash?!] - "...Thinking's your job, ain't it? Whatever you want to do is fine with me, Myne." [Lutz you fool, what have you done] - "...Um, did he just way contract magic? That's what it sounded like. Wha? Wait, has this been a fantasy world all along?" [Geeze this was what gave it away for you? Not the rainbow of hair colors, or the fantasy plants that bleed. Lord she's dense] Chapter 4 - "Myne, do you know what tools and materials you need? " "Yes, don't worry." [This is when you want to worry] - “Myne, you have pot written here, but how large of a pot do you want?” “Ummm... I was thinking a pot about as big as the second-biggest pot at my home.” Mark’s brows furrowed deeper [Why did you think this answer his question, you fool] - I somehow managed to write supply orders for everything except the screen, which Mark gave up on. [Dear gods, she reach this man’s limit. I can’t imagine the headache he has to have right now] - My excitement for a fantasy world full of magic shattered in an instant. Seriously...? A power only nobles have? [Careful what you wish for sweetie] - “Bwuh?! It’s fine! The contract has our exact agreement written on it, there’s no problems at all.” [It took a while for Bwuh Number 2.] - “Your turn” ...No thanks! This magic’s just scary! [Side eyeing P5V9] - “Bwuuuh... Hyah!” Holding back tears, I put blood on my thumb and stamped my name. [Number 3] - “You... You are Myne, right?” [My boy, there are questions you are better off not asking.] Chapter 5 - “...Can you manage that?” “I’ll be fine.” I clenched my fist to show strength. [I can’t believe like myne I miss understood what Lutz asked here] - “I’m afraid not. Those who deserve trouble shall receive it.” “Noooo...” [Corinna would make a good mom] - “Bwuh?! I Couldn’t ask him to do that I’ll apologize to him and then go home on my own!” [Number 4, and sweet lord she needs Ferdi to call her a fool. Good new is Benno will call in the thunder] - “WHAT IS! WRONG! WITH! YOU!” “Bwuh?!” “I said go home!” “Kyaaah!” [Benno used Thunder... it was super effective against Myne. Number 5] - “You are no longer allowed in my store without the boy! If you’ve got a brain in that head, don’t forget” [Myne, meet leash, leash meet Myne, and never let go] - “But y’know, now I get it. You collapse in no time. You’re smart but careless, you’re weak, you’re tiny, and thinking about it, there’s a ton of things you can’t do. Now you can’t even go into the store without me” “So mean, Lutz! I’m useful to people too, sometimes!” [Myne just take the L this time] - “Bwuh?! I can carry stuff too! I’m a lot stronger than I used to be.” [Number 6, while yes you can carry things. He’ll need to carry you home if you did] - “Myne, I know that look. You’re just pretending to agree, aren’t you? You’re not listening to us at all.” He... He saw through me?! [And has for a while now you fool] Chapter 6 - That made me so happy I immediately pumped my fit and said “Let’s go!”, only to get hit on the head from behind by Lutz. [Oh my sweet boy is growing up so fast] - “It seems that Myne wishes for me to carry her today as well.” “Bwuh?!” [Number 7, and Mark you are truly a gentlemen] Chapter 7 - It’s a weird fantasy fruit! Apparently, the red fruit was brother to those weird ingredients I sometimes had to fight with to make supper. [In a far off land, there lies a former God, who felt a great disturbance in the force] - “I was gonna ask why you didn’t go to the other side of the river, but... I’m guessing it was too much for you.” “...It was too much.” I was breathing a lot harder than Lutz [Honestly this is an amazing feat, she didn’t just pass out Lutz, you should praise her] - Over time I had gotten better at managing fires so they didn’t get too bug, but I often would take my eyes off it just long enough for it to get out of control. [Oh gods, who’s bright idea was it to let the gremlin manage a fire, this is almost as dangerous as those red fruits] - “This one’s no good. It’ll make your limbs tingly and you won’t be able to move for three days. This is no good either. It’ll make your stomach hurt for two days. This is worse, you’ll froth at the mouse and die if you eat it.” [Ferdi in the background taking notes] - Incidentally, twenty percent of those mushrooms were poisonous. ...I just don’t get it. How does this keep happening... ? [I’ll take this as the will of the gods of chaos reminding you, that you have more important things to do, Benno still has his hair] Chapter 8 - “Bwuh?! Ah, uummm, yeah. Pretty good right?” [Number 8, and girl, you need to keep your act together, he’s already suspicious and you’re just digging yourself into a deeper hole] - “Yeah! You can trust me! I’ve done this before.” “...When, and Where said Lutz Sharply [In your eagerness to appear useful, you’ve made things worse, you only have yourself to blame here] - “Ngh? U-ummm, th-that’s a girl’s secret! Don’t even think about prying!” [And Myne has thrown water onto that oil fire] - ...Oof , that look hurts. He’s definitely figured me out. [You think! He figured you out a very long time ago] - “Alright. Hey... Eh, scratch that. I’ll say it after the paper’s done,” [Hey babe, we need to talk levels are coming from Lutz] Chapter 9 - “Are we going to talk out here? Do you want to go into the storage building” [Oh shit Myne’s gloves are off] - Urano just followed her whims and read the books around her, which was nothing like who I had become. [I feel that has more to do with the lack of books than anything else] - “Th-That was just... I wasn’t trying to make you own me or anything, I just... gaah, crap!” “Why did you say it, then?” “Don’t ask me that! Let it go! Forget about it!” [Awww, I wonder how red he is here, and only if our future romance novelist was here] - “Myne won’t come back even if you leave, right? And if you’ve been her for a whole year, then the Myne I know is mostly just you,” [This is sooo sappy I love it. Now I wonder how a certain noble would write this out as] Chapter 10 - “It’s really too bad we can’t just grow trombes ourselves.” “Don’t even think about it!” [Lutz what’s the worse that can happen?] - “Bwuh?! They’re that dangerous? It didn’t look like that happened with the one we saw” [Number 9, & Myne just remember the geneva convention doesn’t exist here, so you’re good to go ahead] - “If you really want to throw in something extra, how about... information on some kind of new product to sell, or something like that?” [If a future reflection Otto remember the exact moment he lost Myne to Benno forever] - “...H-Holy crap. How’d you turn paper into this? I have no idea what you just did.” [I’m looking at the step by step guide here Lutz and I too don’t get it] - Wait... How much is this origami crane worth, from a materials perspective? [I mean from your end not much, from a “how much I could’ve sold it for” more than what your dad makes in a month I recon] - “If you want to sell hair stick, what about that other kind? The thing you made Tuuli for her baptism.” [this was the exact moment Myne went from working at the Castle Gate to working at Benno’s store] - “Do we pass? Will you take on Lutz as your apprentice?” [Very nice wording Myne. I am surprised that Benno didn’t ask about your apprenticeship after this] Chapter 11 - “You’re slow! This is a waste of time,” and picked me right up [I’m shocked that there was no Bwuh] - “That’s right. It’s powerful and greedy. You gotta pay to register an apprentice, you gotta pay more if you want to start a new business, and basically anything you do there will have some kind of fee attached” [I can see Benno demanding less taxes] - “Keep quiet and don’t say anything unnecessary” [Benno you are asking the impossible from Myne here] - “The first floor here is used for parking carriages and carts” [You know, I don’t think we’ve ever seen this. Since it’s in the Ivory building I wonder what it looks like?] - Immediately, the gate shone with a white light and then melted into thin air until it was gone. “Bwuh?! What was that?!” “It’s a magic tool. Lutz, don’t let go of my hand. It’ll knock you back” [Number 10, and oh oh, I know how this tool work... neat] - “Wait, is that a bookshelf?!” [Oh lord she’s loose Benno call in Lutz to try and stop her!] - “If you get too excited, you’ll pass out before getting to read anything.” No... Anything but that [Fhew, Crisis adverted] - “This one, Ehrenfest. The family name of the area’s lord is used as the name of the city” [I wonder if Lord is no longer the correct term here, or that commoners just associate all nobles under the same banner] Chapter 12 - The only time Tuuli had worn this hairpin was during her baptism. What had happened then? [Everyone saw the angle which Tuuli is, and wanted to imitate her image. Fredia just so happens to have the money to pay for it] - ...Lutz, no fair! Why do you get to hide behind Benno?! [What not like you’d throw him to the wolves if you had the chance. - The second I did, Benno clicked his tongue. ...Bwuh?! What’d I do wrong [Open your mouth... which appears to be a frequent occurrence, also Number 11] - “Bwuh?! Blood?!” Was blood essential to make magic work? [Number 12, should we tell her?] - ...Magic tools were convent, but scary. [The further in we go, the more this statement rings true] - “Sh-She resembles her grandfather?” I tried imagining a little girl with the guidmaster’s face, but it just didn’t work.” [Lutz please smack this fool for me] Chapter 13 - “Are you Myne, pray tell?” “Bwuh?! Ah, yes! That’s right. Are you Frieda?” [I believe it is customary amost chaos gremlins to give a customary greeting of Bwuh as we see here with this startled one. Number 13] - “I see. I thought that maybe Grandfather has been surprisingly considerate, but in reality, you have him from himself.” [F, I don’t think he’ll survive burns that severe] - “Oh, that’s no issue. I can just repay him for you.” “Bwuh? Ummm...” [I wonder if they are deliberately miss interpreting “repay”, or that’s not a phrase here. Number 14] - The rumours were all true. Benno’s fears hadn’t been unfounded. .. She is just like the guildmaster! She’s saying the same things, just in a different tone. [Watch as she never says this to anyone else] - ...Banno, I’ll stop whining about you ripping people off, so please save meeee! [After this, Myne still whines about Benno ripping people off.] Chapter 14 “Also, uh... I thought she was a lot like Myne.” “Bwuuuh?! How?!” That’s just... unbelievable! I demanded an explanation for his shockingly bad opinion. [Number 15, and Lutz, you are a brave man for challenging Darth Myne.] - “...I’m sorry. I feel a little regret now.” “You should be feeling a lot of it.” [Yeah she won’t change anything folks] - “Welcome back, Myne. How was the girl you weere meeting today? Are you friends now?” [Awww Tuuli you are such an angel. Thinking that a fly caught in a spiders web can be friends with said spider] - “You’re an angel, Tuuli. The healer of my hear. You’re the greatest older sister in the world” [Keep the praises to Tuuli coming] - “...but I’m a weird little sister who acts way different from how she looks. Sorry, Tuuli.” “Haaah... You just now realized?” Tuuli sighed [Damn, Frida’s not the only one playing with fire today] - After the much more lively than expected meal was over, I caught Mom and asked her to return the needles I used for thread.” “What for?” [The sewing gremlin is up against the chaos gremlin, the will be no winners only losers] - “Please show me that thread, dear.” My mom, a dyer by trade and a skilled seamstress, didn’t even try to hide how interested in the thread she was. [Myne the difference between you and her is the fact she can control herself.] - Dad who was drinking while keeping an eye on us, called out to Mom, who was eagerly watching my hands. “Hey, Effa. If you’re that interested in all this, want me to make another needle?” “Dada, I want one too! Can you me two?” Mom’s enthused hug and Tuuli’s cure request put Dad straight into a good mood. [When Gunther asking, you know you have a problem] Chapter 15 - “Aaah, hold it. You two will be eaten alive if you go there alone. I’ll go with you.” Surely he was exaggerating? We were just going to make an appointment. [You fool did you forget what happened just the other day] - “One moment please. The guildmaster said that if children by the name of Myne and Lutz were to come, let them in immediately” “Buwh?!” [Told, you see I told you. Number 16] - Wow... Freida made her first friend, huh? I don’t know who it is but congratulations [Man she’s dense] - “... You ended up friends with that geezer’s granddaughter?” “Bwuh?! Me?! Umm... I wonder about that” [Number 17, and lol] - Ngh... Curse you, rich people. [You know, I’ve been hearing this a lot lately] - “I’ve accepted the products and paid their price. Now we can become friends without any hesitations.” [And the triangle peg goes in the... you right the square hole.] - Maybe this kind of thing was never discovered because nobles, those who bought most luxury goods, just compensated with magic. [This is certainly a chicken and egg scenario] Chapter 16 - Um, Mom? Do you not trust your daughter at all? [Ummm, why do you think they pay Lutz to keep an eye on you] - “At times like these, you never know when you’re fine” And at times like these, you’re so stubborn that you never give in. [Yeah, sweetie when he does you feint, or get to the verge of death so suck it up] - Usually it’s less. You’re making a little more since we’re not dealing with the boss of any shops, but still. “Bwuuuh?! Not even a single middle copper?” [Number 18, and poor Myne all that hard work for nothin] - Benno grimaced, rubbing his temples “...You again?” “Bwuh?” What does he mean, me again? [Benno don’t expect the natural disaster which will remake the market anew to know what they did. Number 19] - “Lutz, don’t take your eyes off this idiot. I get the feeling she’ll try to read the card on her way home and end up in an accident.” [Wise words indeed, Truck-kun was almost the reason she was brought here in the first place] - “Lutz, why all the thread?” Mom... why are you asking that to Lutz and not me, your daughter. [Is she a goldfish, how does she keep forgetting things, like how you are so untrustworthy that they need to play Lutz to keep an eye on you] - Tuuli started to laugh, but then she froze in place and pointed behind me, blinking rapidly. I turned around to see Mom, who was standing still with her hand on her cheek. She was thinking really hard about something “Myne. Should I join you two after finishing your special dress?” ...Um, Lutz? Mum mom looks really pumped about starting this. We might need more pins. [Myne you have unleashed the sewing gremlin. While I would ask you to reflect, and how your own actions can impact other like this. But we know you’ll forget this by the morning.] Chapter 17 - It was pig day. Unlike last year, my family trusted me just enough to leave me at home alone, so they left early in the morning without me. [And Gunther also increased his home insurance for some unknown reason] - I pushed it down into me, visualizing a cover being put onto a pot, and let out another sign. [It’s a surprise tool that will help us later] - “..how much would link cost?” “About 4 small silvers.” “Bwuh?!” [Number 20, and poor myne, you have your paper, but nothing to write on it with, taking bets on Myne destroying the ink market] Chapter 18 - ...because he was both unable to think of a better name himself and used my original name for it, he settled on shortening it to “rinsham.” Um... Is that really good enough? [Hey it’s better than what they came up with in the Anime] - “Myne, it sounds like you know a lot more than you’ve been letting on, huh?” I did, but I wasn’t about to dig my hole any deeper. [...0_0 did she learn from last time... no that can’t be right. The chaos gremlin can’t be taught... right?] - The moment the foreman answered, Benno hefted me up and abducted me into the conference room. “Bwuhbwuhbwuh?!” [Number 21, and wow 3 whole bwuh’s in one word... sadly it only counts as 1] Chapter 19 - He told me with slumped shoulders that it was easier to do all the work himself than run the risk of pointing out the mistakes of his superiors. [Yeah Otto is totally commoner Ferdi] - “I am positively delighted to receive such lavish praise from one of your esteem.” [Suckup] - “Huh?! What?! Butter?! Why butter?! What for?!” Waaait, did I not tell him about it? Whoops, whoops. [Proceeds to not explain herself. Classic Myne] Chapter 20 - Mom pointed at the eighty-percent-finished hairpin and gave a troubled smile. That wouldn’t take long at all given how fast she worked. Tuuli and I tip-toed into the bedroom, making sure not to wake Dad. ...So why where there two finished hairpins on the table when I woke up? Did you stay up late Mom? Tuuli’s mad since she wanted to keep working too. [Yeah know, I get this a feeling Myne gets at least some of her impulses from Effa] - Thiiis isn’t good. The power of money is simply too strong. I didn’t expect them to speed up this much. [Ahhh the power of Capitalism, with the addition of not one but two gremlin’s and it’s unstoppable] - “Okay. Want me to cast a magic spell on your family too?” [And by magic she mean narcotics] - Benno let out a sigh as he walked up to me, then immediately hefted me up and literally tossed me to mark’s direction “Bgyaaaah?!” [We need a “Handle with care” sticker for Myne] Chapter 21 - “Actually I remember you calling the pins stuppghpph!” Zasha clamped his hands over Lut’s mouth and glared at him. “You didn’t tell us nothing about the pay.” [Ah boys will be boys, and by that I mean not listen until you see it in front of your face] - “Get fired up! Do you wanna die!” [consider what this chapter is called, it’s a real possibility] - “Sproutday, Fireday, Leafday, Winday, Fruitday, and Earthday alternate on a cycle, yeah?” [I keep forgetting this order.] Echapter 1 - but her fever just kept going up, to the point where it felt like her body was about to melt. In fact something resembling yellowish vapor was rising off her body like steam. [Oh that’s how you know it’s about done. Just wait 10-15 more minutes of until she’s golden brown] - “Listen, Lutz. This girl’s not as young as she looks. At the very least, she’s mature enough to smile and take care of others when she’s suffering herself. Don’t let her fool you. Don’t take advantage of her help.” [Damn Benno, not even her family recognized that] Echapter 2 - The guildmaster was a petty man who proposed to my mother in the immediate wake of my father’s death, and upon being refused, began harassing us in small but infuriating ways. [So let propose to do this again, who know maybe 4th time lucky.] - “If my brother cannot find a wife due to this, perhaps I shall have Myne take responsibility?” I suggested with a laughter of my own. [Oh lord no, don’t I can feel the Thunder coming down.] Echatper 3 - “I’ll go hurry her up and start getting ready myself. The things I do for her...” [Man Tuuli, you got some sas] - It seemed that Myne has pleasant dreams whenever she fell asleep with a fever, and she was never as happy as she was when talking about the wold of her dreams. [That’s heavy man] - Inspired by the tales of knights in minstrel stories as he was, he mimicked a knight when courting me. He got on one knew before me and held up a magic stone he had obtained after slaying a feybeast. [I hope Effa can tell this story to Myne one day]

Hey Battery, are you OK? You've been saying 0% for 15 min now.

Running a Gigabyte U4UD, been having battery problems for months now, and the battery health only reports 50% capacity. Started playing Battlefront and got distracted and saw my battery looks like this now. Been doing this for 15 min, so either my battery is magical... or the Clevo design is flawed. Seeing how long she goes for on battery before it just dies. I am not looking for tech support, just thought this would be funny.

    [P1V1] Quotes/Review

A while ago I mentioned I wanted to go a re-read of Ascendance of a Bookworm, and I was asked to get some quote when I went through it for the community. Well because of many thing and just how low Part 1 is I've dragged my feet a little. But I've finally re-read P1V1. But man is P1V1 a hard read. If you were to give me this book to me and told me I'd fall in so love with the series I'd buy an e-reader to read it, I'd call you crazy. Take it from me, while I love this series, if you want to get into it watch the anime, or read the Manga. Myne is unbearable at times, (as per her character is designed to be), and I quickly grew tired the one sided obsession of "Books" after 1-2 chapters. The book picks up steam again once she's stopped obsessing with books, like with the shampoo and food, but in P1V1 these are far and few between. But from the perspective of the story this is understandable why and in Volumes 2 and 3 it gets so much better. If you want my two cents on when to read this book. Do it after you've read the Manga or watched the anime, to fill in the little bits of extra world building. Especially for the side stories. Overall a rough start to what is still my favourite books series. ---- Quotes ---- Prologue - Urano Motosu loved books [understatement of century] - She had her books, and that was enough to make her happy. [A certain high priest has words for you] - "Complain all you want. A little pain is a lot better than getting hit by a truck and dying, yeah?" - Shuu [truck kun misses their chance this time] - "That's true. I wouldn't want to die from anything but an avalanche of books" - Urano (Myne) [Moments before disaster.] - "But if I did die, I'd ask a god to reincarnate me so I can keep reading books in my next life. Isn't that smart? Ahaha." - Urano [I can see the God of Chaos saying; "deal, but you'll need to work for it"] - "Life ain't that convenient, moron" - Shuu [I think Shuu and Ferdi would be friends] Chapter 1 - "A college girl nearing graduation was crushed to death by books in her own home" [we would call this natural causes] - ... That's so embarrassing! I died twice that day, once physically and once socially. [You did ask for this] - "I don't see any books... Maybe this is just a nightmare? A death nightmare?" - Myne [God of Chaos asking if you've read the fine print] - No, I'm not Myne! I wanted to protest, but I couldn't. [This is why you get hit by Truck-kun] - I can survive anywhere as long as I've got books. I'll endure anything. So please. Books. Let me have books. [The beginning of the book fueled tantrum] - By acting like I was worried about her. I could avoid things I didn't like. [I feel this is how she handles most situations even 5 parts in] - Attention, whichever god put me here... I wanted to live somewhere modern and convenient. [God of Chaos laughing in the background] - I... I miss Japan. It was filled with so many wonderful things I took for granted. Soft wash cloths, comfortable beds, books, books, books... [I don't think she mentioned books] Chapter 2 - "Wow, Myne! You've gotten really good at this. Soon you'll be able to do it on your own," Tuuli [to myne while she was peeing] - I could appreciate that she was happy for her little sister growing up, but my pride, dignity, and self respect as a human being were in tatters. [She had dignity?] - The first step to improving my life here would be getting books. [Good luck with that] - It wouldn't be long before I started screaming "Books, give me boooks! Waaah!" while sobbing and flailing [the tantrum continues] - "Bwuh?!" - Chaos Gremlin [Our girls first Bwuh, I should start a counter] - ...Um, God, do you hate me? Is this a cruel joke? [Na girl the gods will love you soon enough] Chapter 3 - Um... Do your best, Tuuli! My lunch is counting on you! [Myne you need to respect our angel more] - For some reason, only the steps from the second floor downward were made out of pretty stone. [This is what we call foreshadowing] - Aaaah. A temple. It sounds like religion is enforced here, which sucks. I'll try to avoid that place as much as possible. [Good luck with that sweetie] - ... Oh wait, am I going down the child prodigy path here? At age ten I'll be God's gift to mankind and at age fifteen I'll be a genius, but once I hit twenty I'll just be a normal person. Oh well. [You'll soon have people which will ensure that you are revered like a goddess] Chapter 4 - Um, was that alcohol?! Who in the world would give an innocent little girl strong alcohol like that! [your mum huny] - Bwuh?! [number 2] - "M-Mister! What's this? Wait is it?!" "Oh, that's a book" [Myne entering nirvana] - "I-I don't know what's gotten into you... But I get the feeling I shouldn't let you touch that book" [wise words] - "...And what do I do if I can't get them? Well, what choice do I have but to make them myself?" [rinse and repeat] Chapter 5 - So many of Myne's memories were burred in her thoughts of "no fair," it made me kind of not like her. [spoilers] - "What? Huh? Myne your hair's all pretty and dark blue now. It's like the night sky. And your eyes are like moons!" - Tuuli [first worshipper of the saint] Chapter 6 - My Family's faith in me had hit rock bottom and apparently Tuuli wouldn't even consider leaving me home alone. [it isn't just your family] - "Hey, Myne. Want me to carry you?" ...Lutz, you're such a good kid! [The beginnings of a long friendship] - "Myne, you were sick again recently weren't you? It must hurt. I'll carry you" - Lutz [You'll be saying this a lot soon enough] - Ohohoho, my sweet young Ralph. Are you after my Tuuli? [Elvira frantically writing in the background] Chapter 7 - So... So nice. You're way to nice Tuuli. All I cared about was avoiding Mom's wrath over him forgetting what she worked so hard to find. - "Hahaha! Teach you...? Heh, don't you barely know how to write Captain?" The moment I heard that, I felt a crack run through my very soul. [Be nicer to your dad sweetie] Chapter 8 - Um... Just how useless do people think I am? I mean, it's true that I never do anything, and I'm useless almost all of the time, but still. [At least you have some self awareness... fool] Chapter 9 - "See? It Broke. I told you it wouldn't last all winter. Now, Dad Fix it" ... "Myne, go help Effa" [The struggles of all parents of chaos gremlins] Chapter 10 - ... Wait. Am I the most useless thing in this wagon? [Yes... yes you are] - "Myne, close your mouth. You're gonna bite your tongue off." "Bwuh?!" [number 3] - "He did say she wasn't as young as she looked." [Ummm Otto he meant she was 5, not mature] - "Sorry Tuuli" "Seriously. This is a real pain" "Aww what? Didn't you promise not to say that?" "I never promised that!" I mean... Okay you didn't promise that. But isn't it still like an unspoken promise? [That's not how that works. That's not how any of this works] Chapter 11 - "Bwuh, it didn't work. I wonder if there's something else I can use like a (mirror)..." "I would appreciate it if you would stop wasting out time." [Numbuh 4 and Effa, she will never stop wasting people's time. They just learn to profit from it] - "That's right. Creating clothes for your family is important both practically and to show off to the neighbours. You can't be a true beauty if you're not good a sewing and cooking" Aaah... I'm definitely not gonna grow up into a beauty, then. And I mean I can understand all that being important for a good wife, but what do cooking and sewing have to do with being beautiful? [Myne I am certain that a god will bless you with beauty, it just takes time] - ...Bwuuuh, there’re all so thin I can barely tell them apart. Fiddle fiddle fiddle fiddle [Number 5] - "That's it! I can't do it! Okay (ancient Egyptians), you win! I lose!" Mentally and emotionally exhausted. I clenched a fist around my faux papyrus and yelled out in frustration. [She really needed Lutz here] - "Bwuuuuuh... I failed. My papyrus plan failed so hard." [number 6] - "Be quite. Myne! If you have time to play with plants, weave some baskets!" "Baskets won't turn into books..." "I don't know what you're talking about, but you failed, didn't you? Just start making baskets already" [Good Lutz impression Effa, but only a true Lutz can turn this into something about books] - "That's amazing Myne. I didn't know you were a natural at this. Maybe you should try to be an apprentice carpenter?" "Whaaa? That's a little..." [Poor Myne, your secret is out and now you'll need to work] - "Ngh, why are you so good at this, Myne?" Tuuli compared her basket with mine and slumped her shoulders, depressed at how much worse hers were - "Don't worry about it, Tuuli. You just need to lean how to tighten gaps and plan ahead to make patters" [Tuuli is so precious] - "I can't believe you're better than me, Myneeee..." Oh no... Looks like I've really hurt Tuuli's older sister pride. [Poor jelly Tuuli] Chapter 12 - "It's sunny Dad, it's sunny! Come, wake up! Myne!" Tuuli's excited voice rang through the dark bedroom and soon I was shaken awake. [Ahh the joys of winter] - "Once noon comes and the sun rises, sunlight fall into the forest and like the parue leaves start shinning, and the tree starts shaking, and the leaves all start making swishy swashy noises" [The explanation of a child are fun] - This... This is what happiness tastes like! It's like thick coconut milk! [Poor sugar deprived child] - "Wait, seriously? She made you eat bird food, Tuuli?!" [and it tasted good] Chapter 13 - “Bwuh! So cold!” [Number 7] - "Uh huh, I really like him." I mean, he's my teacher (or so I've unilaterally decided), and he gave me this slate. How could I not like him? [Ah, never change fool never change] - What exactly are you trying to stop your five-year-old daughter from doing? Even if I did like him in that way, he wouldn't give a five-year-old the time of day. - You sure are being dumb, Dad [Myne you did this to yourself] - "... Myne, I'm going to swallow my pride to ask this. Would you please help me?" [Ah enter merchant #1 taking advantage of the chaos gremlin] - "A-Anyway! The point is, I'm not a cheap enough girl to work for free" [No you usually give the information away for free if you talk long enough] Chapter 14 - Dad's face fell with disappointment the moment he heard my answer. He looked so, well, pathetic that I wished he would at least try to act a little tougher. [You did this to him] - "Myne, it looks like Dad's all cheered up now. I'm so glad!" Tuuli beamed the innocent smile of an angel [never change Tuuli never change] - "If there's a way to make her cuter, it's wrong not to do it" Cuteness is justice!" [A future orange haired believer nodding in agreement] - I wonder if all dads act like this when their daughter is sweet to them. Well... Now that he's happy. I guess it's ok if I stop worry about him for a bit? [You'll soon get a few more Dad's to test this on, and ouch so cold to your old man] You see... Making one big flower would be a problem if I got bored halfway though, right? Once again, I kept my thoughts to myself. [She really needs a Lutz] - "You really thought this through Myne." "Of course I did! I'm doing all this for you, Tuuli." [This chapter needs a diabetic warning for how sweet it can be] - "Really?! You're amazing, Dad! I've never respected anyone this much in my life" I got so emotional that I hugged Tuuli hard as Dad muttered to himself, "Hehehe. I beat you Otto." Apparently he had been secretly competing with Otto [Oh lord not again] - Also, Mom ended up addicted to lacework, and before I Knew it the needles Dad made for me were in her sewing box. [Effa is as much of a gremlin as Myne is] Chapter 15 - I had been very careful over the winter, so I only got ever and passed out five times total. Um... That’s a lot less okay? My family was really impressed. They’re like, wow, that’s amazing, you’re doing so much better. And they mean it! [I know it, you know it, she knows it. But it’s better to not shatter her disillusion] - “...So I can do to the forest if I throw a tantrum?” “No need for that. Don’t be dumb” [Never change Myne, never change] - Otto was real serious about convincing me. Said I wouldn’t find a cheaper helper for him anywhere.” [The trap is set, Myne will not escape the merchant’s grasp] - “A pace like today’s is ultimately for the best. You really shouldn’t compare them to me.” [Many a sibling of Myne will agree to this statement, now and in the future] - ...I mean, the forst words and phrases he taught me were “Person Inquiry”, ”Noble”, “Letter of Introduction”, and “Written Petition” [And thus begins Myne’s slanted education] - Apparently, past Myne had barely ever participated in the neighbourhood social events, so the local children considered her something of a rare monster with a low encounter rate. [Can’t decide between Chansey or Tauros] Chapter 16 - “What were you doing at the gate Myne?” “Learning my letters.” “Letters? You can write?!” Lutz looked at me with utter shock. I got the feeling his eyes were whining with respect and admiration for me , but I don’t know enough words to really say I could write. [The second worshipper for our saint has joined us] - Incidentally, first Lutz, and then all his older brother actually cried afterwards. They were sincerely thankfully for how I had not only given them delicious food, but more food than they normally got to eat. [And only Lutz appears to respect that] - ...So hard! Bwuh? Is it even possible to dig into this? [Number 8] - “Why are you willing to help me, Lutz?” “Huh? I mean, you made those parue cakes for me when I was real hungry, right? That day I decided to help you with whatever you need. No matter what” [The beginning of a long a beautiful friendship - ...Bwuh? Just that? He’ll help me dig out clay just for that [Bumber 9, and yes you idiot he likes you] - “Sheesh! You look all nice and sweet on the outside, but I can’t let my guard down around you!” [Wise words for someone so young] - “Actually, I think you should let your guard down a bit more... Why do you have to be smarter than Dad?” [No sweetie, you need actual guards to keep you in line] - I glared at Fey and the other as hard as I could, shocking back sobs as tears streamed down my face. Rage coursed through my body as if to set my blood boiling, but somehow, my mind was frighteningly calm. [Darth Myne has appeared] - Fey and his friends flinched from my glare and slowly backed away, trembling in fear. [Your ability to destroy clay tablets is insignificant to the power of the force] - “Myne, what’s wrong?!” She peered over to see my face and immediately her expression twisted into one of fear, just like Fey’s. “...What happened? You look really mad.” She averted her eyes from me and looked around to assess the situation while consoling me [Don’t use the force on Tuuli, she’s our angel] Apparently, I reigned as the queen of the rumoured “Top People You Should ever Make Angry” rankings for some time. [And thus began her rule, of fear, terror, and books] Chapter 17 - What was normally a grassy wonderland had been scarred deeply by the storm, with mud scattered everywhere. Um... Does this world have financial assistance for natural disasters? [Nope] - I Began to teach Lutz, feeling an odd sens of responsibility to proselytize books, and writing” [And thus began Mynes long childhood career of teaching other children her age] - I heated them on the hearth and boom! My first book turned to dust and rubble. [Almost there girl, you just need Lutz for the whole project] Chapter 18 - The meeting had been ordered by an arch noble, one of a higher-ranked family in noble society, and thus his head would literally fly if he didn’t go. Literally?! Really?! That’s scary! [I wonder is this noble is the one we get to know in the future] - “...I’ve heard that they don’t go to the temple. They summon the priests to their home. Nobles don’t understand how we commoners feel.” [Neat] - “It’s a father’s duty to wait outside the temple.” “Isn’t going to work and making money a father’s duty too?” “Ngh!” [Ahh our baby girl is learning] - To think that a simple change of clothing and crimson blush from crushed red plants would make her look so much more beautiful. Wow... My mom’s got perfect genes. She’s like an absolute beauty. [You can do the same thing if you keep your mouth shut] - I hate working with needles, so I guess I’m pretty much guaranteed to never find a boyfriend or get married here. [I think you’ll need to keep this excuse in your back pocket Myne, you’ll need it] - “Oh goodness, Myne did that? To think she’s good a something other than weird cooking.” [Karla, you need to be nicer to the chaos gremlin, she already is corrupting your boy] - “Oh, okay. You’re healthier now, but we really can’t tell when you’ll get sick. That’s too bad; I wanted everyone to know how amazing you are.” [You are such an angel Tuuli, don’t worry this will be in her benefit] - ...”Go home with this captain immediately. He as so antsy during the meeting that an archnoble glared at us and thereby shaved years off my life.” [And he will never change] Chapter 19 - “Whaaa?! She hasn’t just been resting at the gate?” “Myne wasn’t exaggerating about all those things?!” Tuuli, why are you that surprised? And ouch, Mom, that hurts. I can’t believe you though I wasn’t telling the truth. [Honestly I can’t blame them.] - Wouldn’t that mean it looked it I was in love...? Bwuuuh! [Number 10 Oh I need to save this quote for P5] Chapter 20 - “Wha?! Myne, do you want to become a travelling merchant?! Wha?! Hold on! Did I inspire you by accident? The Captain’s going to kill me!” [And this is how Otto survived all these years] - “Bwuh?! Awww... Okay I guess that makes sense...” [Number 11] Wooow, This would suck really bad if I weren’t fooling myself into thinking I’m cosplaying Cinderella [yeah... cosplaying] - “How long do you think I should dry them?” “Meh? “Maybe I should try cooking them.” “Don’t bother. They’ll explode again” “Awww...” I followed Lutz advice and quiety let the soot pencils dry on their own. [And thus begins Lutz’s long career of being the Myne Manager] Chapter 21 - The moment she glared at the white radish and sharply cut it in half, I heard a loud scream. From the radish. “Bwuh? What?” [Number 12] - Is it just me, or does Mom look at lot more dangerous than the radish? It’s probably just me. [A rare parting of wisdom from Myne] - Sorry Sorry. But Dad, when I asked for some, Mom gave me a meaningful smile and told me that you had stealthily brought that without telling her, and that you it’d be a waste if everyone didn’t get to enjoy it. For once I actually managed to read between the lines. [Gunther you fool, why did you think Effa wouldn’t notice] Chapter 22 No Notable quotes I found in this chapter. Just Darth Myne using the force on herself in confusion. Chapter 23 - “I want ahead and told her you did it for me. ‘Go and ask Myne this stuff’ I said” Bwuh?!” [Number 13 and good on you Lutz, your mother is scary] Chapter 24 - But although he was a successful merchant, her wasn’t like a wizened company president. He has the intensity of a CEO running a venture capital firm. [If you knew that why are you jumping into the jaws of death] - “...Your assistant hasn’t even been baptized?” “Aah, well, actually, I’m in the middle of teaching her to read and write so she can become my assistant.” “You sure made it sound like she was already helping you out quite a bit” “...Let it go, man.” [Benno is right Otto, but we both know he’s no better] - “Listen, girl, I don’t wanna hear them. He’ll never shut up once he gets going” Benno hurriedly tried to stop me, but Otto’s eyes were already shining. [Myne attracts weirdo’s like this a lot huh.] - In the end, I didn’t know whether I pulled Lutz into this or if Lutz pulled me into this, but if Lutz was willing to do what I couldn’t then I was willing to do what Lutz couldn’t. [And here marks the beginning of Assendance of a Bookworm. Took long enough] Echapter 1 - “Oh? My brother force to negotiate? Please share the details with me, Otto dear.” Corinna’s gray eyes shined and she scooted her chair toward Otto a little as she asked for details with a sweet voice [We don’t believe it too Corinna] - “Hair so silky that light gleams off of it, you say?! What does she do to make it like that?!” “Wha? Corrina, you’re plenty pretty already.” “Quiet, Otto. I’m asking my brother” [Corinna has Otto well under her thumb, and Myne... run] - “...I knew it, you have been making her work as your assistant. How could you make a little kid like that help with budget reports? Shameful.” [Again Benno has a point] - “I’ve never said this to anyone, but listen. She’s doing most of my paperwork for me. Seventy percent, at least” “...What?!” “...Seventy percent? Dear...” [can’t tell if this is praise for Myne, or Otto making himself look incompetent] - “... She’s going to become a living natural disaster that destroy the market and remakes it anew.” [I think her scale has the potential for more Benno, don’t sell her short] Echapter 2 - “Should be about shumil season now. I’m bettin’ there’s tons of them running around here” Ralph grinned, holding onto a net [First instance of Shumil] - “Phih phiiiih!” Other shumls that had been earing nearby also ran off after hearing their friend’s squeals. [Pooey] - Fey gave a mean smirk, “That shumil kinda looks like Myne, huh? They’re both blue and stuff” “No they don’t! Shut up, you’re making this hard for me!” Tuuli resisted Fey’s bullying and safely finished her butchering [Don’t be mean to our Angel Fey, you jerk] - “Think about it. Myne and shumils are both super weak right? But when they get mad their eyes get all rainbowy and stuff. What’s the difference?” [I mean you’re not wrong, but you are still mean] - “Hey Lutz, go home early with Fey and sell this at that crystal store. Me and Tuulu gotta stay here to watch the little kids” [Remember this kids as it will be helpful later.] - “When Myne glared at me with those rainbow eyes, it felt like, like, I couldn’t breathe. It hurt. Just think about that freaks me out. Myne’s just weird and scary.” [Then don’t crush her hopes and dreams] - ... and looked up at the darkening blue sky. As it came closer to resembling Myne’s hair and the moon rose looking just like the color of her eyes. [You’re a hopeless romantic Lutz] Echapter 3 - Urano I hope that someday you get stuck in a world without books and suffer! [You fool don’t make wishes like this]

I made a printable physical duplicate of my Kobo e-reader. Mostly for fun.

The other reason is because I got the Kobo Clara 2e to make a e-reader case for it, which I did. And now I don't need it any more, but I'd like a stand in for it just in case, I need to test fit and finish. Now I can sell my old 2e! If you too need a Kobo Clara 2e stand in... for whatever reason. You can download them here Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6577515 Printables: https://www.printables.com/model/842520

I've Installed multiple Linux Distros on my Editing Rig to see how well Davinci Resolve Studio works. Here are the results.

So a couple of weeks ago, [I made this post](https://lemmy.world/post/13058334) asking for help from those who used Linux and Davinci Resolve, and their experience. To those who's response was effectively "I use arch btw", I hear you, but that wasn't the question I wanted to ask. The TL:DR of the responses I got from my last post was 1) Pick the Distro with the DE I wanted 2) Installing Nvidia Drivers in Fedora is a "fun" experience 3) Arch will work if all else fails, but Debain/Ubuntu has community projects to make Resolve work too. So with a plan in hand, am because [Windows is really annoying me with it's bugs](https://youtu.be/tREg4SplhYo). I decided to swap my 1TB Windows drive out, with a spare 512GB SSD to test Linux to see if I can actually use it. My Hardware: - Ryzen 5 1600x - Nvidia RTX 3050 8GB - 16GB DDR4 - 512GB Nvme - 4TB HDD (Personal Storage) - 8TB HDD (Work Storage) My Linux Requirements - Minimal Terminal usage outside of onetime installs - The Ability to use and install Davinci Resolve Studio from my Work Storage - The Ability to install and run Steam and Wine (Lutris/Bottles) - Cinnamon Desktop (best of Gnome with the Window layout I desire) - Minimal configuration to use, should be good to go out of the box with minor tweaking The OS's I tested (in-order of installation) - Linux Mint DE - OpenSuse - Fedora - ~~Debain~~ Debian - Linux Mint The results ----- Linux Mint DE ----- Installing Linux Mint DE was straight forward and easy. The system looked and ran nicely, though the installation of the Nvidia Drivers did require some work, but wasn't too difficult. Davinci Resolve Studio install and ran fine (though I installed it without the deb tool). It alerted me that I didn't have the nvidia_driver installed. But once it was installed, oh boy was it a fun learning experience. Good News, the "Studio" license means I get access to H.264, yay. Bad News, the "Studio" license doesn't include a license for AAC Audio, and by default all *.mp4 containers are muted. Uggh. MainConcept has a plugin that might work, but I've yet to test it. What I did test was the FFMPEG script floating around to copy the h.264 to a mov file and convert/strip the audio to pcm16. I played around and found that H.264 in a MKV container with MP3 audio both worked and resulted in more compressed video files. I like this so I made a script, called it a day and installed some games. Currently I am playing Hogwarts Legacy, a pretty new(ish) game that requires beefy hardware. Good test by my books for this, since not only do I play these kinds of games on my desktop, but I remote play them on my TV with my Steam Link. Sadly I never made it far since after the install process ended and I tried to boot the game in Big Picture on my Steam Link, the display manager freaked out and the desktop started flickering in and out of Big Picture. Yikes I didn't sign up for this seizure inducing mess. But this kind of bugginess was a given with Mint DE, as the goal of Mint DE was to "... deliver the same user experience if Ubuntu was ever to disappear. ". Thus the focus and resources weren't there for issues like this. If I had the time and desire it might be worth experimenting with it more, but as this fails a requirement (3), onto the next Distro. ----- OpenSuse ----- I love the idea of enterprise Linux, and OpenSuse sound perfect for my use case. But the last time I used it, by DE of choice was plasma, and during my install I forgot that OpenSuse doesn't come with Cinnamon by default. No matter I can just choose the Generic desktop and add it in myself... right? Well 30 min later and my desktop looked like a Picasso Painting. I don't know how I got here, and I fear if I was to try again, I wouldn't be able to recreate it. Sorry OpenSuse, I couldn't even give you fair shake down, but you fail my requirements (4&5) before I could check the rest. ----- Fedora ----- I had high hopes for Fedora. Not only is this the upstream of the recommended Distro for Resolve (Rocky Linux), but it's also the basis for many Steam OS like distros so gaming should be good on it. I was nervous about the Nvidia driver install, but it can't be that bad right? Welp finding a Spin of Fedora with Cinnamon was easy enough, and the install is as painless as ever. I like DNF Dragon, but prefer a proper GUI, so Gnome Software here we go. Man I forgot how agonizingly slow DNF is, and I wish they made DNF5 the standard now. Too bad I didn't find out about DNF5 until after this, but 1 set of updates and package installs later and it's time for the Nvidia driver install. Which, yikes, no "nividia_driver" package on the Gnome Software, nor DNF Dragon. Just an AKMod driver. Fine, lets go onto google and find a script. [Which I did easy enough.](https://www.tecmint.com/install-nvidia-drivers-in-linux/), But when I installed it via DNF, it broke my entire distro. The driver install, but the kernel module isn't working and errors out. Thankfully I have access to a terminal, but yikes, nothing I do works, and on a machine without a TPM or secure boot, I don't think it's that Reddit. KK that's fine, I can install the driver from Nvidia itself and install it that way. Lets re-install my distro and try again. Take 2 and the driver installation works, but now there is this ugly grey screen slowing down my boot, and when I install Resolve... it doesn't see my GPU. Fine lets make sure CUDA is install and.... still nothing, and the Nvidia driver is still broken... IBM/Fedora Project, get your stupid heads out of your stupid buts and give us proper verified access to Proprietary drivers. Cuz your distro fails all of my requirements except (4), and I wasted a day. When people point to say that Linux is too difficult to use, this is the distro they are referring to. NEXT! ----- Debian ----- Ah back to familiar territory. Mint DE had issues, but Debian should be fine. It's upstream Ubuntu and everything supports it right? Well after 3 install attempts to get GRUB to work. First was my fault and the second time I don't know what happened, I just kept pressing enter hoping that it'll work. I installed everything set Cinnamon as my DE, and OMG what did they do to you my sweet summer child. Where's the theme control? Where's my ability to force apps to dark mode? Where's Papirus Icons? Are they safe? It's OK, I can spend a bit of time styling as I install things, like steam... which isn't in Gnome Software. Uggh I need to enable "Non-free" in settings. At this point I'm just happy it's a toggle. But I'm starting to not like Gnome Software. It's slow unresponsive and very touchy. But with everything install, it's time for the nvidia drivers. And a Debian guide and terminal later (points marked down), they are installed. And things seem to work. I even tried that [MakeResolveDeb](https://www.danieltufvesson.com/makeresolvedeb) program, and while she takes a minute, it's worth the wait. And Resolve does work, but my MKV MP3 clever work around doesn't work? Maybe Mint DE installs some extra codecs for me. Oh well updating the script back to pcm16 fixes it, but I really need to find a proper solution to that. Otherwise Resolve works well enough. Steam though.... sadly does not. I don't know if it's because I am in Debian, or because it was the flatpak version. But I couldn't even boot into LEGO Star Wars. And with how Cinnamon is slowly turning into a Picasso Painting like Fedora, I feel it's time to bail. Good new I made my Mint installer with Etcher in my Debian install. It was nice. ----- Linux Mint ----- When I hear that modern linux has improved to the point anyone could use it. Mint is the experience I think of when I hear it. Not only was the install process painless. It may have killed my previous Manjaro install on my laptop with it's bootloader malarkey, but with my Windows Drive not plugged in, I had nothing to worry about. Booting it up for the first time, not only was it nice and friendly, but the welcome guide was perfect to setup my machine, offering codecs I was missing. Setting up backups, themes (papirus I missed you), and even *gasp*, install my nvidia driver right on boot, with options for which version I can use. This is what I am talking about for ease of installation. A+++ Mint team, please do this for DE as well when you have the chance... or just merge the projects, up to you. Setting up Resolve on the other hand, yeah that wasn't so easy. Don't get me wrong the challenge before was getting Nvidia installed, but this time the MakeResolveDeb program ran like a asthmatic pickup truck, and took far too long. I actually timed it, 25 min in Debian, about 45-1hour in Mint. No clue why. So as I waited, I played some games, and boy howdy can she game. Why do I know this. Well Mint is on my laptop and is my goto to try games to see if they work in a 13th gen mobile i5, before setting them up in Windows. Hogwarts Legacy booted fine, though shader compilation was annoying especially with the double whammy when the game boots with it too. But hey I'd rather be complaining about game performance and load time than the OS, so this is a win here. And no issues with LEGO Star Wars as well. Now onto Resolve and.... I've apparently used the maximum amount of authentications for my license and I need to wait week. Drat. But hey it should work on paper since it worked in both Mint DE and Debian.... I just really want to try it, especially since MainConcept has a codec plugin for davinci resolve which is suppose to support AAC. It's $100 but if it works, I'd take it. ----- Conclusion ----- At the end of my Test I had my answer, if I wanted to Game and do Work, I need Ubuntu/Linux Mint. Debian appears to just do Work, while Fedora can find a hole and die in it for the amount of wasted time with DNF and Nvidia installations. I wish I could've given OpenSuse a bit more of a chance, but no Cinnamon by default no go. And I am sure Arch would've work, I am just happy I didn't need to go down that rabbit hole. While I would like to say that I closed my desktop up and am riding in the sunset with Mint, sadly that's not the case. Windows 10 refuses to work as an external OS running from USB, and I have ongoing projects there. So one last swap and My desktop is back on Windows. With that said, my Mint install will work as an external USB, which is excellent since this will be a perfect way to both do a long term test with Mint, and slowly Migrate over from Windows to Linux. [In fact I am writing this on Mint right now.](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/c4d7316f-ff76-4c28-9b5a-88286bca7c2d.png) Sure it's load times are slow, but I can easily use my internal HDD for work and it won't impact my Windows. Win/Win for me. Though in the long term I need to do some more testing. FreeCAD and Handbrake are running better, but I need to make sure Resolve doesn't miss behave and the games and accessories I have work well. But I need actual projects to test and right now that work can be done on my laptop. I'm just happy everything works (for now), and hopeful this transition doesn't go too long. But you know what they say, there's no more permanent of a solution than a temporary fix. TL:DR I tried many distros, OpenSuse didn't have cinnamon, Fedora broke twice installing nvidia driver, Debian/Mint DE worked but games were wonky, and Mint worked for everything, but I ran out of Resolve Activation so I presume if it worked on Debian it'll be fine here.

Planning on moving over from Windows 10 to Linux for my Personal Work Station. Can't decide which OS I should switch to.

Windows has been a thorn in my side for years. But ever since I started moved to Linux on my Laptop and swapping my professional software to a cross platform alternative, I've been dreaming on removing it from my SSD. And as soon as I finish my last few projects, I can transition. (I want to do it now). Trouble is which I danced my way across multiple amazing distros, I can't decide which one to land on since the one software I want to test, Davinci Resolve doesn't work on my Intel Powered Laptop. (curse you intel implementation of OpenCL). So the opinions of those of you who've used Davinci Resolve, Unity/Godot, and/or FreeCAD. I want it to be stable with minimal down time on hardware with a AMD Ryzen 5 1600x and a RTX 3050. Here's the OS's I am looking at. CentOS (alt Fedora) - Pro: Recommended by Davinci Resolve for the OS, has good package manager GUI that separates Applications and System Software (DNF Dragon), Good support for multiple Desktop Environments I like. Game Support is excellent and about a few months behind arch. - Con: When I last installed Fedora my OS Drives BTFS file system died a horrific and brutal death, losing all of my data. Can't have that. And I personally do not like DNF and how slow it makes updating and browsing packages. Debain (alt Linux Mint DE) - Pro: The most stable OS I've used, with a wide range of software support both officially in the distros package manager, or from developers own website. I am most familiar with this OS and APT - Cons: Ancient packages which may cause issues with Davinci Resolve and Video Games. An over reliance on the terminal to fix simple problems (though this can be said for most linux distros). I personally don't like APT and how it manages the software. EndevourOS (alt Manjaro) - Pro: The most up to date OS, great for games with the AUR giving support for a lot of software which isn't available on other distros. - Cons: Manjaro has died on me once, and is a hassle to setup right and keep up. EndevourOS has no Package Manager GUI, and is over reliant on the Terminal. Can't use pacman in a terminal the commands are confusing. OpenSUSE Tumbleweed - Pro: Like Fedora but doesn't use DNF, good game support - Cons: Software isn't as well supported. Edit: from the sounds of thing, and the advice from everyone. I think what I’ll do is an install order while testing distros (either in distro box or on a spare ssd) in the following order. Debain/Mint DE -> OpenSUSE -> EndevourOS -> CentOS This list is mostly due to stability and support for nvidia drivers.

Here are my thoughts on Tinykin

Recently I got myself a new game bundle, and in amongst the games that I actually wanted to play, was one called Tinykin. For me a game like Tinykin would just get added to my library and languish for years until I decide to play it, or remember I even had it. See my Turnip Boy post for a case in point. But I want to start doing better and give all the games in bundle I get at least a few minutes in the spotlight. So when I installed and tried out Tinykin, I wasn’t very impressed, and yet I found myself unable to put it down. Which made me want to take a closer look at it. I feel that my intrigue with this game, comes primarily from it’s gameplay. At it’s core, Tinykin is a collect-a-thon platformer akin to Banjo Kazooie, or a Spyro the Dragon. Where you are given a giant level to explore with various paths, hubs and areas. With lots of things to do, things to collect, and activities to complete for more rewards. But unlike other platformers, where you unlock new moves as you play, slowly expanding both your abilities and the world, in Tinykin you get Pikm… cough cough. I mean Tinykin of various colours and abilities that will expand your abilities and things you can do. From interacting with object in the world, to destroying obstacles, getting to new areas that you couldn’t before and solving various puzzles. Movement is where this game truly shines. While these worlds feel gigantic, exploring them never felt tiring. There’s this methodical rhythm that guides you through the entire game making platforming never dull. I fell this is part due to the game excellent aesthetics and music, but also because the game is jammed packed with something for you to do and to interact with. And it’s in the interaction with this game, which initially tripped me up and made it seem a whole lot less impressive then it actually is. The game heavily relies on narrative to push you along and gets you started. But the walls of text the game expects you to read and go through, just put me off. I think there is a good narrative here, but I wasn’t able to pay attention to it. At least not until the end, when there is finally a character that is voiced. Thankfully I was able to play the game, without deliberately talking to a single NPC, objectives can be found, and completed at my discretion and on my own time. Tinykin is an oddly relaxing and wholesome game, where there are no villains, no enemies to fight, no bosses to beat, and no twist villains. Tinykin is just a simple, plane Jane platformer, with a simple gimmick, and unique aesthetic that give this game a unique identity. While for me I probably won’t be replaying it. I have a feeling trying to collect everything would be a chore, and the lack of voice acting doesn’t help starting the levels fresh. I do feel this is a game I want to recommend. It’s not the most impressive platformer I’ve played, but it has this calm and simple enjoyability that I don’t think I’ve seen in another platformer.

I Made a Controller Wire Spool for the Nintendo GameCube Controller

You can download it on: - Printables: https://www.printables.com/model/791235 - Thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6514969 I've been wanting to make this for a while now. I've previously made controller spools for NES, SNES, and DualShock Controllers, but this odd design of the GameCube controller has always pushed me away from making one. However with the addition of a Supporting pillar and some fun design curves, it's working the way I want it to, and it can be flat packed in a 2cm shipping box.

Word of warning to those with Prusa MK4 and Satin beds. There is a chance that the auto bed leveler will mess up and destroy your print surface.

I've tried to report the issue to Prusa support but they keeps trying to diagnose it as user error. But at this point I'm at a loss and presume that it's either a firmware issue or a sensor issue on my unit. Either way im very disappointed. And before you ask, this is the opposite side ![PXL_20240301_160413072](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/ab7e9690-eeb4-4971-92d4-b4eae9f30a47.jpeg) EDIT: I will note that this print sheet is ruined for my use case, since those patterns will be shown on the underside of my prints. But the print surface still works and can be used without issue... if you ignore the gouges that are being detailed into every print.

Here's what the Reddit DSP invitation looks like and the limitation.

Full Text: u/[deleted], tl;dr – you’re invited to a special program that lets redditors purchase stock at the same price as institutional investors when we IPO. Details about eligibility and next steps follow. This (long, dense) email has all the info we can provide due to legal restrictions. As you may have heard, Reddit has taken steps toward becoming a publicly traded company with the initial public filing of our registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on February 22, 2024. Yes, it’s happening. And because you have helped make Reddit what it is today, you now have the opportunity to become Reddit owners at the same price as institutional investors. We’re offering a Directed Share Program (“DSP”) that invites eligible users and moderators who have contributed to Reddit to participate in our initial public offering (“IPO”). (Including you!) Program Requirements While being selected to pre-register is the first step, there are certain legal and regulatory requirements to participate in the DSP that are outside of Reddit’s control. Bear with us here… To be eligible for the DSP, you must: Be a current U.S. resident; You will be asked to provide the DSP Administrator a valid social security or permanent resident number, along with other personal information. Reddit will not have access to this data. Please note that U.S. residents using a VPN may face application limitations if the VPN locates them in certain non-U.S. jurisdictions. Be at least 18 years old; Provide your full legal name and an email address; Not be a current or former Reddit employee (FTE). When the DSP launches (a few weeks after pre-registration ends), individuals who have been confirmed for the program will be contacted by our external DSP Administrator. You will then be asked to provide additional information securely to the DSP Administrator to confirm your eligibility. How to pre-register The number of people who can participate in the DSP is limited; we will offer this opportunity to as many redditors as we are able to accommodate. If capacity is reached before the deadline, you will be added to the waitlist. Based on demand, we may also limit the number of shares available. If you are interested in being part of Reddit’s DSP, please go to https://reddit.com/dsp on desktop to complete the pre-registration form. If you are one of the confirmed participants, we will follow up with an email with more details in the coming weeks. You can also refer to the Frequently Asked Questions for more information. Due to regulatory restrictions (yeah… we know…) we are not able to respond to further inquiries or questions. Pre-registering does not guarantee that you will be invited or able to participate in the DSP; it also does not obligate you to purchase shares. As with any investment opportunity, you should make an individual decision based on your own personal circumstances and risk tolerance. Therefore, we urge you to review the preliminary prospectus, when available, before deciding whether to invest in Reddit. The deadline for pre-registering for the DSP is March 5, 2024. If capacity is reached before the deadline, you will be added to the waitlist. What happens next? While there won’t be a confirmation email immediately after you pre-register, everyone who pre-registers will receive an email in the coming weeks from “noreply@redditmail.com”, telling them whether they can proceed with the next steps for the DSP. This is an automated message (beep, boop, beep) and does not receive replies. Please refer to the FAQ for more information. Per our lawyercats, we are not able to respond to further inquiries or questions. Prospectus and Important Disclosures The offering will be made only by means of a prospectus. When available, a copy of the preliminary prospectus related to the offering may be obtained from: Morgan Stanley & Co. Here are my two cents on Side Order!

So I've been playing and I've beat Side Order already, and I have some thoughts. Spoiler Free TL:DR is I like it, but I feel it's unfinished. If you want my full thoughts they are below but be warned. ---THERE MAY BE SPOILERS BELOW--- Side Order, or as Nintendo creatively calls it in their credits "Expansion Pass" 😒, is a first in the Splatoon series, a Rouge Like DLC, with a tower that is 30 levels deep. Where as are you climb, you'll get random power ups and buffs, upgrading yourself and the Pearl Drone (best feature in the whole DLC) as you climb. The way the game is laid out is exactly like Octo Expansion, but gone are the tailored made levels. And in are a gauntlet of battle arena's and challenge missions, usually culminating in a handful of repeating mission types of your choice. As a game mode it's a perfect mix of challenge and randomness that makes each climb fun. It fits perfectly into Splatoon's post-apocalyptic and dystopian aesthetic. And with the weapon variety and unlocks, there's a lot of replay value. A Lot more than Octo Expansion. But if I am perfectly honest, while I do like Side Order and the content it has on offer. And I personally feel it's well worth the price. For some reason it feel unfinished. I don't know if it's how often the same 2 or 3 levels get repeated. The fact that there is only a handful of game modes. Or the lack of enemy and boss variety. It just feels like the devs made a good first part of a game, and said that's good enough, and shipped it. After my 3rd or 5th run on the tower I was actively looking for the ??? levels since it was something new. But even then what I did was the same across the board. And it made me think back to Octo Expansion, from the creative level designs, grind rail challenges, 3D Picross levels, that made me yearn for something a little more. I don't think it's fair to judge Side Order to Octo Expansion, they are two completely different beast. And with Splatoon 3's signal player campaign I can see why Nintendo felt they needed to do something different. I just feel that this game at a bare minimum needs some extra enemies, bosses and floors, especially on the lower levels, to make it feel a little more complete. As it is I feel it's like 85% done, and it needs a little more to go from being a fun experience to an excellent one. This is defiantly worth getting if you already have Splatoon 3, but unlike Octo, I don't think it's worth getting Splatoon 3 for this expansion.

I made a simple display stand for every video game cartridge type I own

I use to sell games on eBay a long time ago and I still have quite the collection. So I made these display stands for my games. Would've killed to have these back when I was selling them! Of the carts I have shown here we have stands for - NES [Printables](https://www.printables.com/model/770344-nes-cartridge-display-stands) | [Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6491683) - SNES [Printables](https://www.printables.com/model/770358-super-nintendo-cartridge-display-stands) | [Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6491695) - N64 [Printables](https://www.printables.com/model/770332-nintendo-64-cartridge-display-stands) | [Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6491676) - Sega Genesis/Master System [Printables](https://www.printables.com/model/770349-sega-cartridge-display-stands) | [Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6491692) - Atari 2600/7800 [Printables](https://www.printables.com/model/770319-atari-26007800-cartridge-display-stands) | [Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6491666) - Atari Jaguar [Printables](https://www.printables.com/model/770327-atari-jaguar-cartridge-display-stands) | [Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6491671) You can also see my design files on [GitHub](https://github.com/the16bitgamer/16BitVirtualStudiosDesigns/tree/main/Game%20-%20Video%20Game%20Stands)

3D Printed in TPU a replacement gasket for my bath tubs Spring Stopper. Where the only option was a $30 replacement

Long and short of it. My bathtub's spring stopper has deteriorated. Building manager solution was to use a rubber stopper. I looked for a replacement part, couldn't find one outside of an [outright replacement](https://www.homedepot.ca/product/os-b-universal-clicker-stopper/1001156641). So I modelled and printed this one in TPU. It works! ![PXL_20240216_192037973](https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/ec17aba2-4c1b-4393-a18e-3f0bf99a3342.jpeg) EDIT: 2h30m later, the I've lost ~20mm of water in the replacements tub. Probably should increase the width of the Part to get a better seal. Nothing I can do about it tonight EDIT: 12h later, the tub was pretty much empty. Trying again with a wider plug since I think the fit wasn't tight enough before. As for those who think a regular stopper would be better, you are right. But for the $0.16 of material and a learning opportunity for TPU I don't see it as a waste of time

Trying out the Lightning Infill for the first time, so far so good

If you don't know what lightning infill is, it was made by [Cura](https://ultimaker.com/learn/how-to-print-like-a-flash-with-lightning-infill/) and was added to [PrusaSclicer](https://blog.prusa3d.com/prusaslicer-2-5-is-here-new-perimeter-generator-step-file-support-lightning-infill-and-more_70562/). I chose to print with it since it showed up as a tool tip. Hoping has the same infill strength as Gyroid as it's suppose to use less filament (estimates is around 5 grams for this part). It was suppose to also save time, but it instead added 10 min.

I just finished playing through Crash 2 for the first time!

You know when you want to play a game, but you just can't find the time to play it. Well that was my long running excuse on why I haven't played Crash 2 after all these years. But I finally found some time, so here is what I thought of the game. Crash 2 Cortex Strikes Back is the second game in the series, and the first I played through on PlayStation (well DuckStation but same game). And trying to get started with this game was... difficult for me. For some reason I want to play this game like a Spyro title, trying to get all the collectibles and gems on my first playthrough. But even after multiple runs of the first level I couldn't get all the gems. Nor with the second level. While before this mentality made me want to put the controller down, this time I just decided to say F it, and just get the Crystals and make it past the first warp room. And what can I say but wow is this a fun, but extremely difficult platformer. Crashes jumps are heavy, platform collision detection is small, and the ice physics are brutal. But I'd never call this game unfair. The game always provides lots of opportunities to get extra lives, and with checkpoint and box placements, it's always just a matter of time before I can complete a stage. I mean I only ever game overed once in my entire playthrough. No if I had to criticize this game, it's that this is a "Strategy Guide" game. A game which basically demands the player to get the official strategy guide for the game, so you can get that 100% completion. What this means for Crash 2 is that there is no in game hints and tricks to lead the player to get the various hidden gems. Especially the colored ones. Thankfully you can beat the game without one and Gamefaqs exists so it's not difficult to find the secrets on your own. But I kind of was hoping the Crash was going to be like Spyro. A game which you can play at beat on your own just by playing around and not running into every wall to find one you can clip through. But for what Crash 2 is, it's a very good, beautiful, polished, almost essential PlayStation experience. Out of the 3 games this is the one I'd recommend picking up first. If I am honest though unlike the Reignited Trilogy for Spyro which I feel is hit or miss for the spyro games, I feel the Insane Trillogy is the definitive way to play any of the Crash games.
