I think you’re probably worrying too much though,

This could certainly be true, but I prefer to think of it more as a prophylactic approach to critical thinking. These videos show viewers that it's okay to form volatile opinions absent fact, critical thinking, reason, context, or application. I don't want my child be trained to think like a Republican or a Christian.

When he says ‘I don’t know’ maybe you should believe that’s how he really feels,

If that's how they really feel, then I want to encourage deeper thought into something before forming opinions on it. I want to train them to sort through their feelings on something and be able to come to a rational conclusion. If that's not how they feel and this is just a cop-out to not have to discuss something with a parent (I'd bet my mortgage on this), then I want to discourage the notion that an excuse can be used for everything and the concept that nobody can be held accountable for their stances on something.

Your seven points you worry about are well and good but media doesn’t do that, politicians don’t do that, corporations don’t do that,

These are not excuses or explanations, these are problems.

life partners and lovers don’t do that, friends don’t do that,

Which may be the cause for much strive in social interactions.

    I bet YOU don’t do that…

I do do that. I am a scientist and a philosopher. I believe in reason, rationalization, context, applicability, utility, and equality/equity.

we’ve got to learn why people do the things they do

People do things because they either 1) Have a rationalized reason for doing so (someone who has critical thinking capabilities), 2) they have an irrational reason for doing so (someone absent reason and logic), or 3) they have no reason for doing so (someone absent sanity or care/investment).

I listened to endless craziness like

It sounds like all these sources did nothing but build up their own disrepute, and you knew it. Entertainment factor, sure, but the only value you get from listening to this stuff is to understand their motivations. They don't contribute any new information, and justifiable hypotheses, any authoritative conclusions; they only instruct their listeners in how to copy their behavior. Which is exactly why I don't want my child exposed to such garbage until they're capable of the critical thought necessary to spot the fallacies.

Yes maybe the entertainment is more important than the content of their arguments, being able to know the truth is useful but being able to entertain friends, girlfriends, bosses and authority figures is what can turn a hard life into a great and easy one.

I can see the point you're trying to make but I have to disagree. I'd much rather be able to form a cogent argument that fosters profitable discourse than post an adequately funny meme without understanding why the joke is inappropriate.

Perhaps I'm being too impatient. Just this morning I was watching with them a video where the pundit was complaining about people who do gender reveal parties for their babies. I turned around and asked "Does this person have any kids of their own?" and they said "No, why?" Didn't see the connection. Didn't pick up the absence of authority on the topic. Just wanted to watch because it's fun to watch someone make fun of someone else.

I've sat and watched it with them and said things like "That makes absolutely no sense," "All of that was incorrect," "None of that is supported by any evidence," and such. They just figure I'm a stupid adult and ignore everything I'm doing.

I agree with all of this. My issue is that the child in question literally will not listen to anything. They completely ignore heart-to-heart conversations, won't take any advice, and don't even acknowledge anyone is speaking. I've tried to use reason and logic but they just don't care. I've tried to point out logical fallacy and they don't get it. I've tried to show arguments being made with more cohesion and sound justification but they don't care.

They just want to watch this garbage for entertainment. And that's fine; I did the same thing. It's just that this crap in particular is going to make them stupid and unable of critical thinking.

I agree. The issue, however, is that they simply do not engage with any conversation. All I get is shrugs and "I don't know" to literally anything I say. My latest idea is a litmus test I will reward them for taking which gives me an idea of their cognitive and critical thinking .

    Parent to Moderate YouTube

Hello, folks. Hoping I can get some opinions on my situation. My 12-yo watches *a lot* of YouTube. It is mostly streaming personalities who have a lot to say on a variety of topics. I have either watched these videos with them, overheard them from another room, or looked some up from their history and viewed them myself. I have problems with them and want to do something about it. I care little about the topics being discussed; my child is allowed to be interested in their own things, even those separate from ours (their parents), and it's also reasonable for them to disagree with us. All of that is fine. My problem is with how these streamers present their content: 1. They do not provide critical scrutinization of the issues. 2. They do not apply logical rationalization or reason to the stances they take. 3. They do not cite sources of repute to justify their positions. 4. They are needlessly hyperbolic. 5. They examine no dissenting opinions. 6. They present themselves as authorities on every topic with zero credentials to support that assertion. 7. They succumb to, support, and repeat what is obviously propaganda. To say nothing of the fact that the value the entertainment potential and viewership counts more than the content of their arguments. I was raised allowed to moderate my own content because I was trusted to be intelligent and wise enough to critically select what I watched or read and learn from the mistakes I made if I consumed something negatively influential. I have tried to extend this same trust to my 12-yo, but their constant repetition of what they hear and their inability to form a cogent argument makes me feel like their YouTube viewing habits are teaching them to accept concepts at face-value simply because they are popular. I don't feel it would be productive to start out-right blocking content and pundits because this would feel more hegemonic than educational. I'd rather increase the likelihood that they'd critique and dismiss the content than decrease the likelihood that they'd view it. I would love to hear what others have to say about this situation.

Yeah, same. I've had to increase the dose a few times to get it dialed in right.

Some nights/weeks it's just not gonna do it's job. This can be random, but also predictable based on environment.

My provider added as-needed Adavan and I've also supplemented with low doses of Valium with some effect.

My opinion/experience, though, is that (as is common with these types of things) talk therapy, reading, and workbooks yield the best/most impacting results.

I buy 4-5 pairs for $10-$20 at cheap stores and even gas stations. The utility is nearly identical, I get multiple fashion choices, and the easy (affordable and available everywhere) replaceability compensates for the slightly lower quality.

Helps that I'm not a brand loyalist or in need of expensive status symbols.

You're missing the point. He did a bad thing. Yes. But punishing him for doing it doesn't undo the bad thing. Right now we have the chance to praise the good thing: switching sides.

What will get more blue votes: penalizing red votes after they're already cast, or extolling the virtues of voting blue, especially using cases of those who have seen the value of switching sides?

You're not wrong that his vote may have caused harm, but he has just as much right to cast it as you have to shun him for it. The real story here is that he learned and is now on a more productive side. We should be celebrating the future, not dwelling on past mistakes.

What did he get away with? He voted for a candidate he believed in. It was a poor choice from some perspectives, but he apparently knows that now and is advocating for the opposing side. Literal democracy at work.

We should reward this behavior. Punishing bad behavior only teaches people to get better at lying about it. Rewarding good behavior creates more of it.

Will punishing him cause Trump to lose the election he already won?

    GPS Tracking (Android) App

I'm looking for recommendations for an Android app to track and report GPS-type data (if such an app exists). Specifically, I'm hoping to be able to extract stops, origin/destination, roads/route traveled, and speed information. Two use cases: 1. Friend does an ad-hoc delivery service where requests are phoned in when they're needed rather than scheduled ahead of time. The ability to see where they started, where they went, and what roads/distance they traveled as they scurry about all day without having to enter it all manually into a map program later on would be invaluable to calculating expenses. 2. Same friend was pulled over, while I was also in the vehicle, for speeding but was definitely *not* exceeding the speed limit. I would've loved to be able to pull up some GPS data that said what speed we were going at the time on the road in question.

What I should do about auditory "hallucinations"

I'm trying to figure out what's happening to me and I'm not sure where to look. For the last *several* years, whenever I listen to silence-filling noise (white, brown, pink, etc.) I tend to hear additional sounds. It's like having your radio tuned to a MHz that's just off a *tiny* bit, so you hear static but there's just a *slight* edge of voices or something that you can't quite make out but is definitely there. Sometimes, instead of voices, it's also patterns in the noise or various pitches. It happens in a variety of situations, like Youtube videos, audio tracks from meditation apps and noise generators, and even devices that have no audio input or antenna and are specifically for noise as you'd find in the waiting room of a massage clinic. It even happens when it's a completely benign source like an air fan. And the sounds I hear match the volume of the source. Do I have superpowers? A brain tumor? Am I just sensitive to imperfect wave form generation? Am I part-dog? Have I done damage to myself from listening to Metallica way too loud for too many years? Where do I start looking into this? Does anyone have any possible explanations for what I'm experiencing that might lead me in the right direction?

Looking for Live Video Recorder to Cloud

I am looking for a recording tool/app (preferably for Android) which would allow me to start recording a video and have that video saved to the cloud *as I record it*. I already have several ways to automatically upload video files to the could once the recording has ended and the file is saved to the device. I want something that will save a video *in progress* to the cloud *as I record it*. An example use-case would be an activist filming coverage of an event where the device is accidentally destroyed or confiscated by authorities mid-stream/record. The ability to go and find what was recorded before it has to be completed, saved, and then uploaded is extremely valuable to me. The upload to cloud option is, of course, in case access the device can not be restored; I'd like to go find what was captured up until the moment of disruption from any device so long as I have the credentials. I avoid mainstream services like YouTube and Facebook but will use them if I *must*, preferring FOSS, decentralized, privacy respecting, etc. options where possible. Any suggestions are much appreciated!

    Finding Time

My *(mid-30s M)* wife *(mid-30s F)* took a job that has rather extreme hours. She also has another time/location commitment as the direct consequence of some of her actions. These combined have left us with, at most, 1 hour each day during which we are both awake and under the same roof. As you might imagine, it has put quite the strain (for me at least, she doesn't talk about it) on our quality time, conversation, interaction, romance, and amorous activities, which have become, at best: difficult, forced, unenthusiastic, and incredibly rare. She mostly spends what little time there is playing games on her phone. I put myself in her shoes and it becomes *marginally* understandable: After a long and challenging day, I could see the desire to sit quietly and do an activity with/for myself rather than attend to the needs of yet another person. But I've been having a really hard time. I am being stoic and supportive and appreciative of all that she is doing, but, under the surface, I am lonely and miss my wife and long for connection. Should I stay the course or find some way to broach the issue, adding yet another burden to her already laborious time? I'd really appreciate hearing from someone who's dealt with/is currently in a similar situation, or anyone who has encouragement or advice, or just anything I could think about while I deal.

Blocking app access to the internet

Question for the group on a problem I'm trying to solve: How can I block internet access for some apps on standard, OOTB Android? My current set-up is to use Proton VPN with the Android settings "Always-on VPN" and "Block connections without VPN" and then use Proton VPN's Split-tunneling to exclude certain apps from using the VPN. This has the desired effect of blocking certain apps from having access to the internet. However, I now find that I need to use certain Apps *without* the VPN but *with* internet access. In the past, I'd used something like NetGuard to control which apps have internet access, but, as Android only allows one VPN slot, this would require me to swap out Proton VPN. So my problem statement: I'd like to be able to continue to use Proton VPN, exclude *some* apps from using that VPN but still have access to the internet, and block *still other* apps from the internet entirely. I'm struggling to find a way to do this. Any suggestions are welcome!

    Alternative to Azure DevOps Boards

Hi All! I'm looking for an alternative to Azure DevOps boards for my project management. I'm particularly interested in the ability to create relationships between tasks (parent/child and predecessor/successor *especially*) and to organize cards/stories into parent features or epics or however (I don't care what they're "called"). I've tried [alternativeto.net](https://alternativeto.net/software/azure-boards/) but I'm just not finding what I'd hoped. I'd prefer [FOSS](https://wikiless.org/wiki/Free_and_open-source_software?lang=en) and self-hostable (especially **[YunoHost](https://yunohost.org)**, for which I've tried Focal Board which comes *close*), but I wouldn't mind local-only or something online if they have a good privacy policy. Any suggestions are totally welcome. Thanks in advance!

I have: - Pulled up all the carpet and padding so there are only hard-wood floors. - Sealed the window. - Sealed/used gap-filler on all the edges where the wall meets the floor. - Switched out the mattress for one from a hospital, which is sealed and hypo-allergenic. - Applied repellent spray on all edges, corners, and cracks. - Vacuumed regularly and always switch out clean sheets/blankets. - Treated all pets in the house for fleas. I believe it is isolated to *this* bedroom because all other members of the house use all other rooms and furniture but *nobody* else is suffering any bites at all. However, I am at a loss as to what could be causing it. All I can think of left is: - The hardwood floors that now remain, having pulled up the carpeting, *do* have *tiny* cracks between them. Perhaps there is something underneath *this specific* section of the house (crawlspace)? - Could something be coming in through the HVAC? If so, why is it so regularly making the adventure to come out and *repeatedly* bite *this* child? I suppose I could still try: - Covering the floorboards with some kind of sealing paint. - Bombing the room. - Switching rooms with the child. I really need some insight, I'm at a total loss. Why only *this* child and why *so many* bites *so frequently*? I've investigated other environmental sources and it doesn't seem to happen at other houses nor is it coming from school as no other child suffers. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could try to not only determine how/why/where this is happening but also how to stop it?

    Apps Requesting Permissions

So I installed this app that wants permissions to my photos and/or files so I can upload a picture. Totally normal. I want to know if it's possible to specify that these permissions are only granted for a *specific* directory/folder, rather than the whole device. It doesn't seem like it, but curious if there's a way to do this. Any suggestions are welcome.

    Free Internet Non-Believers

I believe in an open internet, FOSS, privacy by default, etc. I migrated away from Google by self-hosting Nextcloud. I prefer messaging apps like Molly, SimpleX, Threema, Matrix, etc. over standard SMS. I love the Fediverse (Lemmy, Mastodon, etc.). But everyone I live with and everyone I know simply *refuses* to take part. I can't interact with them socially because they're all on Facebook. I can't communicate with them because they all use group texts for SMS/RCS. I feel like I'm living in a different part of the world and am completely disconnected from everything that's going on around me (with the people I want to interact). **My question is:** does anyone else experience this, and how do you reconcile it? I want to share photos and clever posts with my family but they aren't on the Fediverse. I want to communicate securely with them but they only want to SMS. I want to share documents but they only use Google Docs. There are people I've met on the Fediverse and through some secure messaging apps with whom I've struck up a rapport, but these are still (predominately) strangers, and I'd really like to involve the people I care about in these exciting new times. They just *wont* participate. I feel like I've invited everyone in my family to go on a great, grand vacation away and I'm the only one who's packed.

    Help Getting News

Hello! I'm looking for help in finding ways to stay up to date with News "of the World" in the modern age. Having de-Googled (and, therefore, abandoned Google News), I find it hard to track what is going on outside of links posted to Lemmy/Mastodon (my only social media), and have no subscriptions to any streaming channels and no cable TV. I'm hoping someone can help me find a way to subscribe/watch enough news that I can stay properly informed. *(For context, I am living in the US but believe I should be aware of activities in the rest of the World as we all undoubtedly impact each other.)* My goals are: 1. "Watch" topics in particular (ex: Tech, Science, Politics, LGBTQ+ rights, etc.). 2. Discover new items of interest based on my current interests. 3. Reputable sources that at least attempt to be unbiased (especially those that cite respectably, such as academic publications and the like). 4. Prefer FOSS solutions. 5. Multiple (even dissenting) opinions are enjoyable. I am a learned man and value knowledge, open-mindedness, objective truth, and perspective. Any suggestions are eagerly encouraged. Thank you all.

Help Branching Out / Upgrading Skillset

I've been a data (reporting) analyst for nearly a decade. I got my start writing complex SQL queries to develop reports and expanded into visualization (Tableau, Power BI). Lately I spent time as a data modeler designing DBs and helping create ETLs using ADF (though not putting hands on that process myself, I'm familiar enough with it to make it work). I'm looking for my next opportunity and finding that my lack of knowledge in Python is creating a blocker. Also, other skills I don't have seem to crop up, like Spark, Hadoop, etc. It seems like the Data Engineer role has been folded into my Data Analyst role and I just can't compete any more. Would anyone have any suggestions for paths I might take to remedy this? I can work with some online Python courses but I feel I'm not getting the full experience needed to really support the new needs being asked of those in my role. I'm hoping someone might have some suggestions for directions I might take to up-skill myself and be more prepared for the emerging needs of this changing industry.

    Discrepancies in Ladder/Cube score

I've noticed that, when switching between the Steam and Android versions of the game, my ladder score (or amount of Cubes) does not stay consistent. How do I get in touch with SD to alert them to this?
