Maybe part of the solution should be to change how we talk about products or make recommendations. Such as describing what to look for in a product instead of the product itself.

https://news.ufl.edu/archive/2012/02/color-is-key-in-controlling-flies-uf-researchers-find.html
A key to making the device effective was the discovery that flies are three times more attracted to the color blue than to yellow and that yellow actually seemed to repel flies.
Well TIL, maybe it's the color?
My original guess was that red watermelons are more common and so flies have evolved to crave it. You could also try with other fruits and report back 😄

I found this (rather toxic) thread talking about turning it off. Doesn't seem like it's possible normally, but I'll be curious how GRAPHENE IS handles it.

The new version also hasn't been around for that long, so it might face issues that will be worked out over time. We already had a post on a Lemmy android community about moisture issues

I think you can do that with one of the brushes actually

Am I the only one that gets this? I tried uploading a video but can’t seem to regardless of file size
I don't think you can upload a video to Lemmy directly. People usually upload to another site and then paste the link in the URL field.
Toggling between sections makes no difference
This shouldn't happen, I'll poke around and see if I can replicate it.
so many different sections of lemmy makes it difficult to know where to post
Quick overview if it helps:
-
subscribed
,local
,all
,moderator view
are different feeds that will show posts from different collections of communities:subscribed
shows posts from communities you subscribe tolocal
shows posts from communities on the instance. This can be helpful for topic specific instances, and on our instance it will get you a lot of the Canadian content. The full list of communities on our instance are here: https://lemmy.ca/communitiesall
shows all content that the instance knows aboutmoderator view
only shows posts from communities where you are a mod.
-
hot
,active
,scaled
,controversial
etc. affects the order of the posts on the feed.
You can set defaults in your settings once you know what you like, I haven't changed mine in a long time now. I use subscribed
with scaled
, but I recommend trying out things to see what you prefer :)
When posting, you will be posting to a specific community. What I like to do is navigate to it in my address bar. It will follow this format:
lemmy.ca/c/COMMUNITY@example.com
For example
- the fediverse community on lemmy.world:
lemmy.ca/c/fediverse@lemmy.world
- the Canada community on lemmy.ca:
lemmy.ca/c/canada
(orlemmy.ca/c/canada@lemmy.ca
if you find it easier)

Ah any reason why Firefox decided not to include WebSerial?
Maybe you don’t want to buy the Station, or you left it at home. In either event, you can simply plug the iron into your computer and configure it via WebSerial.
You’ll need a browser based on Chrome to pull this trick off, as Mozilla has decided (at least, for now) to not include the capability in Firefox. In testing, it worked perfectly on both my Linux desktop and Chromebook.
Unfortunately, plugging the iron into your phone won’t work, as the mobile version of Chrome does not currently support WebSerial. But given the vertical layout of the interface and the big touch-friendly buttons, I can only assume that iFixit is either banking on this changing soon or has a workaround in mind. Being able to plug the iron into your phone for a quick settings tweak would be incredibly handy, so hopefully it will happen one way or another.
The WebSerial interface not only gives you access to all the same settings as plugging the iron into the Power Station does, but it also serves as the mechanism for updating the firmware on the iron.

Would you be able to take a screenshot of the map and edit that in as the link URL? Nice thumbnails help a post be seen, and it might let people see the map when the site is getting a hug of death 😄
Then just have the website link at the top of the post

I think it is since it was a similar interface across the 2 I checked, but I don't have WhatsApp installed to check that one
Even if you don't enter data into Facebook/Meta directly, they may be getting data from other games/music apps/etc. **How to check** - Navigate to the `Accounts Center` menu. - Instagram: open your profile page > 3 bar menu > `Settings` > `Accounts Center` - Messenger: 3 bar menu > gear icon > scroll to bottom > `Accounts Center` - `Your information and permissions` - `Your activity off Meta technologies` There should also be an option for `Manage future activity` --- I use some apps to communicate with family, and clearly my privacy protections weren't as good as I thought they were. I set things up a long time ago, so I imagine something changed since then. I'm considering of either sending the apps to the work profile, or switching to only using them in the browser. If it's because I connected my account to the other service at some point, I don't know how to sever that connection now aside from dropping that other game/app/service

The app was crashing instantly on a family member's phone, and looking up the problem got me a lot of recent posts about the issue. **Fix:** 1. Go to the play store and find the app, either by searching for it, using the `installed apps` list, or this link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.maps 2. It should have a button for "Uninstall", with a note about only uninstalling updates as it is a system app 3. Select uninstall, and then open the app You may also need to disable automatic updates for the app until this gets fixed. 1. Repeat the first step to open the app page 2. Tap the 3 dot menu 3. Uncheck "Enable Auto Update"

EDIT: I didn't notice in the original post, the article is from 2023 cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/19707239 > Researchers have documented an explosion of hate and misinformation on Twitter since the Tesla billionaire took over in October 2022 -- and now experts say communicating about climate science on the social network on which many of them rely is getting harder. > > Policies aimed at curbing the deadly effects of climate change are accelerating, prompting a rise in what experts identify as organised resistance by opponents of climate reform. > > Peter Gleick, a climate and water specialist with nearly 99,000 followers, announced on May 21 he would no longer post on the platform because it was amplifying racism and sexism. > > While he is accustomed to "offensive, personal, ad hominem attacks, up to and including direct physical threats", he told AFP, "in the past few months, since the takeover and changes at Twitter, the amount, vituperativeness, and intensity of abuse has skyrocketed".

About the project > Plant-it is a self-hosted gardening companion app. > Useful for keeping track of plant care, receiving notifications about when to water plants, uploading plant images, and more. About this release: > Highlights > In this release, we've made significant improvements to both the app and server, focusing on performance, notifications, and overall user experience. One of the most notable changes is the switch from Ubuntu to Alpine as the base Docker image for the server, resulting in a much smaller image size, which should lead to faster deployments and lower resource usage. We've also introduced Gotify notifications across both the app and server, providing alerts to keep you informed. Additionally, we've addressed various small fixes and enhancements to improve stability and usability.
New releases are a chance to talk about how a project is developing. I'm happy to make another post in a bigger community to get more feedback, but I wanted to check here first to see if this is something you might want to do [@PhilipTheBucket@ponder.cat](https://ponder.cat/u/PhilipTheBucket) A potential process could be 1. User makes a request in !meta@ponder.cat, and tags the relevant mod 2. If the mod approves, they can tag the admin of this instance to turn the feed on There are also general communities that this could work for, such as [!opensource@programming.dev](https://programming.dev/c/opensource) or [!selfhosted@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/c/selfhosted), but those communities are active and may see this as spam. It may help to crosspost the bot posts to them instead. Technical: - This [article](https://medium.com/@vilcins/rss-feeds-for-your-github-releases-tags-and-activity-cbda2c51373) had some information on creating feeds for GitHub. - There may be a similar option for the GitHub alternatives. - F-Droid would be cool, but [I don't think that's possible yet](https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/1641-rss-feed-for-f-droid) Potential issue: Repos with lots of pre-releases may feel like spam. Relevant issues [here](https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/17052) and [here](https://github.com/orgs/community/discussions/4993). Those repos could be skipped. (sorry if this was already discussed)
