Dank voor de reacties trouwens. Ben blij dat er gewoon een Nederlandse gemeenschap is buiten Reddit.
Jammer alleen dat ik in de reacties m'n anonieme account voor altijd heb gekoppeld met mijn niet-anonieme account.
For some years now, I have seen this graph go around on social media. I think it's a powerful image, because it shows us so clearly that it is happening in our lifetime and under our watch. But when I use it in my work, I always add the disclaimer the the graph does not show when it was made. Because that is a problem: the graph might show us that if you are currently 30 years old, 50% of all the CO2 that has been emitted since 1751 has been emitted in your lifetime. But that percentage changes over time. By now, for people who are currently 30, the percentage will be higher, simply because the annual emissions have gone up since the graph was made. So I made a new version of the graph, the interactive version of which you can find here: http://mishathings.org:8050/ ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/ba4bc073-48b3-4ede-a43f-7f20f1f22961.png) I wrote a post about this: https://mishathings.org/2024-08-12-how-much-co2-has-been-emitted-in-my-lifetime.html
I love how I can customize my PC/VPS (Linux), and I feel truly at home. I hate smartphones (iPhone and Android). I hate it how limited I am in configuring them, and it's a PITA to make sure it all syncs with my main computer. Why isn't it much more common to just use our phones as little windows/gateways to our actual computers? Using something like VCN? Internet speeds should be fast enough? We could even build a little interface that makes it easier to navigate?

Just to clarify, in the video I hoover the (unfortunately invisible) cursor above the comment links, which then appear at the bottom of the screen.
I was trying to link to one of these specific comments, when I found out that the one next to it has the same url. Is this supposed to happen? https://mander.xyz/comment/717587 [Video](https://diode.zone/w/u8JTV1siq7wRe9MwyiQB2v)

Lol, I didnt see the screenshot yet. Thanks.
(Doesn't it make sense to separate these options?)
(Loving the updates of the latest jerboa version BTW)

You mean this?
On the web version of Lemmy I can choose different ways of sorting comments, but in Jerboa there are no options for this?

Hi there! Great that you're here. Among other things, I would be curious to read about what is happening in your corner of the world. For instance in terms of biodiversity and attempts to map/protect it.

There is interesting correspondence about this between Newton and Burnet, as documented by Gould in his 1987 "Time's arrow, Time's cycle":
Newton suggested to Burnet that "the paradox of creation in but six days might be resolved by arguing that the earth rotated much more slowly then, producing a "day" of enormous extent."
To which Burnet incredulously responded "But if the revolutions of the earth were thus slow at first, how came they to be swifter? From natural causes or supernatural?"
Burnet also objected that long early days would stretch the lives of patriarchs even beyond the already problematical 969 of Methuselah and his compatriots—and that while organisms might enjoy sunny days of such extended length, the long nights might become unbearable: "If the day was thus long what a doleful night would there be".

/e/ os seems to be running Android 12, which I believe is the latest?
But yes, a different launcher solves the issue!

Can't find any, but I'm on a slightly obscure OS (https://e.foundation/e-os/) so probably they have made some choices like that. Thanks!

What could a Fediverse alternative look like? One in which every community gets to fill their own canvas, and the resulting canvasses are peacefully co-existing as a patchwork in a shared main larger canvas?
mishathings 1 year ago • 100%
I now see that the problem is quite simply that the background colour and the lining of the jerboa are the same (for me).
Does anyone recognize this issue (see image)? ![](https://mander.xyz/pictrs/image/0ca12ab6-bb62-4d28-828b-febfbda84ae2.jpeg)
Just checking: am I correct that there are two AskLemmy's? https://lemmy.ml/c/asklemmy https://lemmy.world/c/asklemmy If so, is there any way to bring communities with the same purpose (or even same name) on different instances together? If not, how can we prevent fragmentation of these communities?
It's a bit old, but I thought that some of you might still like this thing.

Aren't governments asking people to get vaccinated to protect vulnerable people? A fascist government would let a virus like covid-19 spread freely, justifying it with some "let nature/evolution strengthen our gene pool"-social darwinist bullshit.

Thanks, I had also found those pages, but they didn't really help. This turned out to be the solution: https://prouser123.me/mastodon-userid-lookup/ Thanks anyway!
Does anyone by any chance know how to find/obtain one's Mastodon "Account ID" (also sometimes referred to as "User ID")? Thanks!

See the book "Riding for Deliveroo" by Callum Cant. You'll have a clear answer (at least when it comes to the food delivery platforms). (You can find it at http://libgen.rs/).

I'm not sure if automation really brings down our labour footprint though. For that to be the case, automation would need to lower the number or hours we work, which I don't believe is the case?
mishathings 3 years ago • 100%
No, specialization is fine. It's just that, through the market, you lose track of how many people work for you.
Let's say you own an estate and have a gardener, a butler and a maid, it's clear. It's visible. You know it, they know it, your neighbours know it. If you, through the market, effectively consume 3 fte of (international) labour, you're practically living the same aristocrat life, without realizing it.
If this situation would be more visible, people might be more willing to vote for (internationally) redistributive politics?

I was thinking about a website/app that uses Google Translate API, but saves each result to its own database, so that every time anyone uses it, we slowly build an alternative together.
But I guess to have a properly functioning alternative you would also want to have the code that generates the results?

Thanks for the reference, I've added the book to my reading list.
However,knowing the price of commodities are more closely correlated with labor-time than with profits (or ‘markups’;
I see. Assuming that prices are mostly made up of labour costs (?), I "only" need to know the average hourly wage/salary in the supply chain-network of the products I consume could get me a rough estimate of the labour time that went into it.
variations between prices and labor costs are, on average, 15%,
Is this in Shaikh's book? If so, do you maybe have a page reference for this? Do you mean that on average, prices are for 85% made up of labour costs? And the rest is profit [1] and rent [2]?
[1] what workers effectively pay their bosses to be allowed to use their machines
[2] what farmers need to pay to landowners to be able to use their land

Yes it is mind-boggling. But then again a lot of these processes serve many people. It may take months for a farmer to grow the wheat that is in my bread, but in doing so he provides for thousands of breads. So effectively my bread doesn't contain "months of work", but "months of work" / "thousands of pieces of bread".
If you would add up all the labour that goes into the things you consume on an average day, how many hours do you consume a day? Extra clarification: https://mishathings.com/2021-08-23-how-many-people-work-for-me.html

I suspect rich influential people of actively keeping "their inner circle" small so that "access to influential people" is such a scarce valuable resource that they can then sell at exorbitant prices (salaries) to companies.

Related, but slightly different: when I DDG this question I find this post, but I cannot comment on it (because I have to sign in to that instance). But when I then search for this title in the search bar of my instance I don't find the post?
1) I can see that people have been asking for the ability to - as a user - move to a different Lemmy-instance. Is this still considered? How probably is it that it will be implemented any time soon? 2) When I create a user at an instance, I delete it, but then afterwards I want to create it again (with the same name), it says that the user already exists. Is this intentional? Will it be possible to (re)create a user with the same name after some time? Or never?
