The predatory credit cards in the US should be not legal. They are exploiting people who don’t have so called “financial literacy” and encourage wasteful spending.

In Europe the US style credit cards don’t really exist and people just have debit cards. Also there is a social safety net, so people don’t have to rely on keeping money in the bank for when they become unemployed.

The anti-tampering solution sounds like some trusted computing bullshit like on mobile where banking apps will refuse to run if your device has a custom rom or non-locked boot loader. This would be how anti-cheat software could continue to lock out linux.

I have had a similar idea. Basically some third party that is trusted to be the escrow for all the source code and documentation would basically release it once the company stops supporting it.

I think the point of co-operative/collaborative parenting would be for the group to agree on how to raise the children. You collectively raise the children, not each adult implementing their own rules/methods. When you have differing opinions, you would most likely compromise and come to a common ground. The whole point of working together is to operate as a group to reduce the workload and not work in isolation.

I (originally from the US) moved to Germany with a Swiss girlfriend, so we visit Switzerland frequently and know the cultural/politics.

I find Germany to have much better social policies than Switzerland, such as better worker rights/conditions, public health insurance. The Swiss people voted against having minimum 5 weeks vacation and also just rejected caps on the private insurance minimum costs. The politics are much more conservative/individualistic compared to Germany. On a positive side, Switzerland probably has the best public transport system in Europe.

The fact that it is a open linux device and I can launch in to KDE is the reason I got it. If it was some proprietary OS like other games consoles or Windows, I wouldn’t have bought it. The Steam Deck is such a breath of fresh air compared to how hostile other consumer electronics have become.

I’m not for sure this is fair to call it worker led, as the company is a normal capitalist company, not a worker owned collective/co-op.

Is it insane that so much government money is going to a profit company, which is trying to make as much money as possible, in turn wasting government/tax payer money.

I think expecting people to consume less is the wrong approach. We should instead stop the wasteful production, then the people will naturally consume less. For example, banning production of SUVs.

I think having the focus be about reducing unnecessary and wasteful production to be a more accurate description, as we don’t want to degrow everything. Sectors of the society providing human and social value/services will need to grow. It is only the wasteful production that needs to be degrown.

Even if companies were replacing existing hardware, the existing hardware uses less power. So whether it is additional hardware or not, there will be an increase in energy demand, which is bad for climate change.

Now, the Initiative for a New Social Market Economy (INSM), a market-liberal lobbying organization, has created a pop-up museum designed to turn up the heat on the German government

While funny, the group behind it certainly sounds scary. We don’t need more neo-liberal policies.

I mentioned game consoles as an example of consumer electronics that function without having yearly updates. This is largely due to giving game devs a performance tagtet to hit, but it shows you don’t need marginal updates every year. Mobile app software could probably benefit from not having better hardware every year, forcing devs to write better software.

From a software standpoint, iPhones are locked down like gaming consoles, focused on consumption and not general computing devices. Apple controls what software runs on their devices just like Nintendo.

I think yearly car updates are also wasteful and the car industry has adopted a fashion style model where the changes are mostly atheistic and they try to make people’s cars feel outdated/obsolete and for them to buy a new model. Cars are viewed as a status symbol, so this works.

Apple has been applying the same play book as the auto industry, though they can actually obsolete hardware through their software.

I’d suggest getting rid of client side rendering and JavaScript. At some point web developers decided to try to emulate desktop app UIs and cram it into the browser. Websites used to be rendered on the server and the HTML was just sent to the client, which had to just parse and displayed natively. Is was really fast and efficient. This would also be a massive win for privacy and it would automatically eliminate all the spyware/adware client side JavaScript code.

As far as I understand, this isn’t changed.

Apple didn’t really open control of iOS as all apps still have be approved by them through notarization, which they said will be done by a person and not automated.

You can’t run unsigned apps on iOS like you can on macOS.
