This is correct - clot risk is quite low until you reach 40 or so, so it’s basically down to preference until then. Patches definitely have that lower risk, but lots of people don’t like them or feel anxious checking they’re still on, so pills can be a good option for them.

Important to remember pathways and medications are different all over the world, so what’s available might vary depending on where you live.

This statement is an interesting one - we absolutely need to be pushing large companies to reduce their emissions, because they have a huge ge impact. But you’re on the money here - here’s a really good write up about it, but that stat includes “use of sold product” in its emissions - aka us using those companies’ products. We’ve got a huge part to play here - climate action requires both pushing for corporate responsibility as well as individual changes.

This is really interesting to read, thank you! I work in medical education, specifically around gender diversity - so knew a lot of this but not the detail you’ve shared here, so thanks!

Practically speaking - the questions OP mentioned doctors asked are also just the best ways to provide the best care we can. So often we use the sex marker on someone’s file as a shortcut to the kind of care they need, but there are obviously so many exceptions to those rules, and not just for trans and non-binary folks. One of the biggest questions I get asked is about differing care and needs based on sex, and it’s actually so easy - just treat the person in front of you like a whole, individual person, rather than a sex maker on a file.

I think this is what I came here to say, too! Bags of MSG are soooo cheap, I have a tiny jar of it next to my oven and it’s so satisfying and so much fun to taste what you’re cooking before and after adding a sprinkle of MSG. Amazing difference!

I’ve learnt to add umami in lots of other ways, but for some recipes, msg really is a good hit.

I think it’s less to do with the traits themselves and more to do with the person and how they’re perceived. As other people have said - people get more of a significant impact from role models they can identify with or look like them. There’s so much room for role models of all types, but if we’re thinking about masculinity specifically, so many young men and boys only have masculine folk in their lives who, for example, don’t share their emotions - and this pattern affirms the idea that it’s not ‘manly’ to be vulnerable.

More people who express themselves in a ‘masculine’ way modeling these positive traits show other people with similar identities and expressions that it’s possible (and good) for them to do it, too.

This is great advice! I also think there’s a huge difference in being stealth by choice and stealth by necessity. Making an active choice in this can be great for your wellbeing - the difference between feeling empowered to do this and being required to do it.

I’d recommend being open to letting trusted people in - one of the biggest struggles of going stealth is the isolation and worry about being outed, and having even one person you can share about this with will make the world of difference.

I currently use nextjs and prismic for my CMS - while there are some nextjs themes and starters, it’ll probably require some coding (which I enjoy!). A benefit of next is that it has incremental static regeneration, so can update pages without having to rebuild the whole site.

I’ve also used Sanity on pretty much every other site I’ve built and it’s fantastic!

I’m looking at rebuilding my blog from scratch at the moment - I kind of have a whole different purpose for it now. I’m looking at Astro instead of Next, and thinking about TinaCMS over sanity - partly to try something new, partly because the speed and simplicity of Astro with a visual builder writing markdown is exciting to me!

I’ve been using it for the last week and really enjoy it - I’m on an m1 air and asahi is so much snappier than macOS, which is saying something because it still sings!

There’s a few key hardware features still missing - mic, speaker, and the thunderbolt port (so hdmi and external displays) that are preventing me from driving it fully because I do a lot of presentations at work, but it’s quick enough to boot into mac when I need to.

Occasionally there’s something that doesn’t want to run on arm architecture, but there’s usually an alternative - and it sounds like 4k paging is close.

Give it a shot! I’m invested cos I wanna hear more people’s take on it 😅

Kia ora! I've recently set up asahi linux on my macbook - it's been probably 10 years since I last seriously spent time using linux, so I'm real out of the loop! I've been playing with hyprland and really enjoy it - its approach to window management and productivity is feeling really instinctual, which I love. With that in mind, I'm on the hunt for email clients on linux - I'm open to trying a good few, because email is my bugbear and I'm invested in finding something that really works. Something that makes it easy to process them would be great - and if it's customisable in terms of looks, even better!

It’s also absolutely incorrect and pretty well documented - 9% of adults on average globally, trending much higher for youth according to some of the most recent data from Ipsos.

But you’re absolutely right - bringing up population rates is unnecessary and kind of odd - and how many of us there are doesn’t negate how poorly we’re treated in many parts of the world, and the deficits we still face in western society.

This is such a strange read - the article starts by talking about how Gen Z are prioritising wellbeing over wealth (true and so important to talk about) but then just totally rags on them for having no motivation and ‘delusional’ thinking? It touches so briefly on how the norms and expectations previous generations had are now absolutely inaccessible for so many, then criticises them for ‘manifestation’ and not just trying?

This is so worth talking about but I think a much more useful and interesting analysis would be looking at why manifestation is on the rise, and why so much focus is on wellbeing over wealth - and how exactly traditional goals like home ownership and retirement became so out of reach. But that would require more than just name-dropping late stage capitalism and actually acknowledging its failures though, huh?

The issue isn’t that the majority of people are straight (though I’d point to what we saw in the rates of left handedness once we stopped punishing it), it’s how we talk about it and the assumptions we make - and it’s about the disparities LGBTQIA+ people can face because of the specifically heteronormative way society is set up.

Marriage equality is a great easy example - the reason marriage equality was (and is, in so many places) such a big deal wasn’t just so we could marry just like heterosexuals - it’s because there are so many rights afforded to married couples that aren’t afforded to others. Healthcare access is the big one - in so many places, only married spouses are considered ‘family’ and able to make decisions for their partner, or even visit them in hospital.

To use your analogy, it would be like there not being any metal concerts, ever, because everyone just likes pop, right? Why would anyone want to go to a metal gig?

Yeah, I’m really puzzled at what they’re thinking. I suspect this most recent statement is entirely motivated by wanting to control the narrative going into the election after the treasury report yesterday, but I’m also confused as to why they didn’t continue with the tax switch plan in the report. Seems like an easy win and relatively easy to communicate - my (pessimistic) feeling is they’re just not wanting to risk any chance of an election loss at all.

I agree with you - I really like Bernard’s take and I think the tone of it is absolutely spot on, because this really is an ongoing issue of parties (and voters) ignoring obvious solutions - but I don’t think it’s off the cards for a whole generation. I think this election is going to be a fascinating one, especially with the amount the smaller parties are picking up in the polling. You’re right, in 10-20 years so many of the problems we’re facing now are going to be so much more evident and affecting so many more of us.

Absolutely great read from Bernard Hickey on Hipkins' wealth tax announcement and the treasury report released yesterday: > That’s it. It will now be almost impossible for a wealth or capital gains tax to be implemented within the next decade or two. > The future of Aotearoa’s political economy will now remain frozen in its stagnant, unequal, unjust, unproductive and unhealthy state for the forseeable future. That’s what our leaders, and ultimately the only voters that matter, have decided. Those hoping to change that frozen landscape should now look after themselves and their families, and/or hope and work for an electoral miracle that gives parties who want such taxes dominant positions in any post-election negotiation.

It’s so interesting seeing the discourse on fedi about threads and meta - like I absolutely think it’s the right call for so many instances to not federate with meta because they for sure will be scraping user data and it will be a moderation nightmare, but this article raises a really valid point. Federation is almost a harm reduction approach for so many users who aren’t so privacy aware and are keen to be connected to their friends and family on threads.

I’m not a fan of the fedi superiority complex we so often see - people who use meta products aren’t a monolith, they’re people just like us, and a huge majority of them simply aren’t aware of the privacy implications of meta’s approach, or it’s not a huge priority for them.

This isn't a new video, but it's new to me - as someone who's slowly working their way through these games (about halfway through OoT for the first time), this video is such a nice dive into its story and the themes at play.

Tips for a long-lost android user

Kia ora! I've been an ios user for 100 years at this point, but used to be deep in the android scene before then. I've just got an android for a work phone and am wondering what's changed in the last 10 years - what are your essential apps, settings, customisations? I've had a hunt around xda but can't seem to find much in the way of roms for my model (Samsung A04) - back in the day it seemed there was a thread for every device! What do I need to know?

Kia ora! Introducing myself as a new mod!

Kia ora! My name's Jen - my pronouns are she/her, and I'm a queer and trans artist and advocate living in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand. So pleased to introduce myself as a new mod for this community! In my day job, I work for a rainbow social service, organising an in-person community - pleased to do what I can for this community, too!

    Multiple exposures on 6x7

I picked up a ligero67 this summer, a 3d printed body for Mamiya Press lenses and backs. Developed my first couple rolls recently and had a fair few accidental multiple exposures, but I liked this one!
