Okay, but (as per the article) the allegedly-"top" court that made the ruling, the European Union’s General Court (EGC), is not the same as the court that the lawsuit would be appealed to, the European Court of Justice (ECJ). How can the EGC be the "top" court if the ECJ is above it?

Besides, the bottom line is that saying "the top court ruled on this" strongly implies that it's a final decision, but that's not the case here. Regardless of the details of which court does what, that's misleading and therefore clickbait. Don't write headlines telling me it's hopeless when there's actually hope!

As a Georgian who has been closely following this ratfuckery for some time now, I think the odds of Georgia's actual popular votes getting (a) accurately counted and (b) correctly certified and translated into Electoral College votes is are a toss-up, at best. I think it's alarmingly likely that either (a) so many voters get suppressed and so many ballots get illegitimately thrown out for bullshit reasons like "signature mismatches" that it changes the popular vote outcome or (b) MAGA poll watcher sabotage/refusals to certify/fake electors/bad-faith lawsuits result in SCOTUS or some other MAGA-sabotaged court either invalidating GA's EC votes entirely or using the manufactured uncertainty as an excuse to assign them to the candidate who, in actuality, got fewer popular votes.

Voting is absolutely necessary, but also woefully insufficient. We desperately need to be preparing to force the MAGA conspiracists who have infiltrated the elections bureaucracy to do their jobs properly and organizing massive counter-protests. Perhaps most importantly, we need to be doing this despite how the MAGA election deniers have poisoned the well against acknowledging real election fraud, and we need to get over the idea that it's somehow hypocritical or uncouth to use some of the same tactics they've been using to undermine democracy in order to save it.

I believe we can beat the fascists, but in order to do so we have to actually be willing to do what's necessary to beat the fascists, and I have seen precious little evidence that there's any sort of widespread movement towards that.

In general, you're not wrong in your summary of how the Web developed. The problem is, though, that you seem to be assuming that since the Web did develop that way, that it had to develop that way. I disagree with that: I think other possibilities existed and might have been viable or even dominant if the dice of fate/random chance had happened to land differently. (And I think that they would've been much more likely to be viable or even dominant if some of the regulatory environment had been different, e.g. if residential ISPs hadn't been allowed to get away with things like drastically asymmetric connections and prohibiting users from running servers. More enforcement of accessibility and standards compliance, instead of tolerating companies deliberately abusing things like Flash and Javascript to unduly restrict users, would've also gone a long way.)

and make it look/function the same across different screens and different brands of computers.

That was not only totally optional, but also arguably considered harmful. HTML was intended to leave presentation up to the client to a certain extent, by design. Megalomaniacal marketers and graphic designers demanding to have pixel-perfect control and doing a bunch of dirty hacks (e.g. abusing <table> for page layout instead of tabular data) to achieve it were fundamentally Doing It Wrong.

But I do wonder if anyone is thinking about how foss replacements and competition will gain any ground because honestly they either pay the bills with donations and ads, or they charge a subscription fee because these things cost money to run.

Or they implement a distributed architecture that offloads the bandwidth and storage costs to users directly, a la Bittorrent, IPFS, Freenet, etc.

You can also get different varieties of Ubuntu with different default desktop environments, named as portmanteaus of [DE name] + "Ubuntu." Specifically, there's Kubuntu (with KDE), Xubuntu (with XFCE), and most relevantly, Lubuntu (with LXQT).

Note that LXQT isn't the same thing as LXDE, but is sort of a successor to it (even though LXDE is also still maintained).

sudo apt install lxde (or sudo apt install lxqt, for that matter) is definitely simpler than starting over installing a Lubuntu image though, so try that first.

    Hydrogen powered shit is dumb.

I had the same skepticism, so I looked into it. The TL;DR is that this isn't that. It's not using the hydrogen as a fuel source; it's using it as reactant in the reduction reaction that produces metallic iron from iron oxide, so that it does { Fe~x~O~y~ + H~2~ ⟶ Fe + H~2~O } instead of { Fe~x~O~y~ + CO ⟶ Fe + CO~2~ }.

(For the record: I completely agree with everything you wrote, except for the small mistake of assuming "hydrogen powered shit" was an accurate description of this particular project.)

to build one of the largest hydrogen fuel furnaces in the world

Hey, it's a "hydrogen" thing that's actually not blatant greenwashing, for once! I was skeptical, so I read through to the press release and Wikipedia to figure out what it was talking about, and now I'll share with the class:

Calling this a "hydrogen fuel furnace" is misleading. The point of this thing isn't to use hydrogen as an energy storage medium and then burn it to produce heat/fuel-cell-react it to produce electricity. Instead, the point is to use the hydrogen itself as a reactant in the reduction reaction to convert iron oxides to metallic iron. (In other words, there's actually a good reason for it to use hydrogen specifically, unlike the hydrogen cars we more commonly hear about.)

Specifically, reduction of iron typically occurs via two paths, using either carbon monoxide (CO) or hydrogen gas (H~2~). In a "normal" foundry these gases are typically obtained as combustion products of burning coal and the reduction happens along a mix of the two paths.

    3 Fe~2~O~3~ + CO ⟶ 2 Fe~3~O~4~ + CO~2~
    Fe~3~O~4~ + CO ⟶ 3 FeO + CO~2~
    FeO + CO ⟶ Fe + CO~2~

    3 Fe~2~O~3~ + H~2~ ⟶ 2 Fe~3~O~4~ + H~2~O
    Fe~3~O~4~ + H~2~ ⟶ 3 FeO + H~2~O
    FeO + H~2~ ⟶ Fe + H~2~O

Using pure H~2~ as the reducing gas eliminates the first path, and produces the iron metal without needing any carbon (assuming it used "green hydrogen" (produced by electrolyzing water using electricity from renewable sources) rather than "blue hydrogen" (produced from natural gas), as doing otherwise would completely defeat the purpose).

    There are two caveats, here:

    1. Steel plants still need carbon inputs in order to carburize the iron into steel. That's not a problem in terms of global warming emissions as the carbon is consumed in the process and becomes part of the steel, but it does mean the thing would still consume fossil fuels. (Maybe there's an opportunity in the future to hook it to CO~2~-capture systems and make it net-negative?)

    2. The press release describes the furnace being funded as "hydrogen-ready flex-fuel". In other words, it's not actually going to run in the environmentally-superior mode I described; it's just capable of it. The actual magnitude of improvement will be fuck-all until they go further and install a "green hydrogen" source at some undetermined later date that the press release doesn't even contemplate.

I learned Python after I already knew C, and I will forever be grateful for that.

I took an Operating Systems class in undergrad whose first assignment was to implement a simple web server in C, and it was fine. Later, I took the same prof's grad-level class and had to do basically the same assignment again, and all I could think was "wow, this is incredibly tedious: this whole thing would be literally two lines of Python." Python absolutely ruined my patience for writing C (or at least, for writing C socket code that has to manually juggle IPv4 and v6 struct addrinfos and whatnot).

cross-posted from: https://feddit.uk/post/16276908 > Plans for a new city centre car park in Exeter have been criticised. > > Proposals to turn the former bus station site into a car park are part of a public consultation which also involves increasing car park prices across the city. > > The Green Party said the plans for a new car park were "ridiculous" and did not "make any financial sense". > > The Labour leader of the council said he wants to increase the options available for the use of the site. > > The council is considering creating a new Paris Street car park, external on part of the old bus station site which was demolished earlier this year. > > Previous plans for offices and a multi-purpose performance venue on the site were scrapped in 2023. > > Diana Moore, Exeter Green Party leader, said: "A new car park, right next to St Sidwell’s Point, a place which is meant to be a showcase for sustainability and health, and close to a dangerous roundabout and the new bus station, beggars belief." > > Ms Moore said the plan showed a "breathtaking lack of imagination". > > She said: "This decision also puts cutting carbon emissions, reducing congestion and improving air quality firmly into reverse gear. > > "As existing city centre car parks are underutilised, this decision doesn't make any financial sense either." > > The council is also looking at raising prices at car parks across the city centre. > > The council's executive met on Tuesday to approve the plan for a six-week public consultation which should begin later in August. > > Liberal Democrat group leader Michael Mitchell also raised concerns at the meeting about how the plans fitted alongside Exeter City Council's plans to become net zero on carbon emmissions by 2030. > > Phil Bialyk, leader of the council, said he understood the concerns raised by opposition parties but said the council was trying to prepare for different scenarios. > > He said: "All this will do is give us the ability to charge for whatever part of the old bus station site we might choose to use as a car park site. > > "Having a parking order will increase our options on how we can use this space for the benefit of the people in Exeter." > > Mr Bialyk said the council was working on new plans for the area which were expected to be made public in the autumn.

Is old-school tar paper hardwood flooring underlayment and old-school tar paper roofing underlayment the same thing?

I fixed my roof a few years ago, and have part of a roll of tar paper sitting in the basement. I’m now re-laying some hardwood flooring. Can I use that leftover stuff as underlayment, or is there some subtle but important difference between “flooring” tar paper and “roofing” tar paper that means I ought to go buy some other product? (If it matters, the house was built in the 1940s and uses materials typical of that era. I’m just doing repairs/small modifications, so I’m patching in like-for-like stuff.)

Cake days have an off-by-one error

In my profile it says my cake day is today (June 13), but it was displaying a cake icon on my comments all day yesterday (June 12). The icon was a black and white outline so I thought maybe it was showing it the day before on purpose so other people would see ahead of time, and that it would turn colorful on the actual day. But then midnight hit and it disappeared, so it must be a bug instead.

Wall framing question: stud spacing between openings

I'm framing up a non-load-bearing wall that has two closet doors on it, close together (the king studs for the two openings are 13" apart). Unfortunately, they are aligned such that one of the 16" OC common studs would fall within that gap. In fact, it would only be 1/2" away from the left king stud, so not even anywhere near the middle of the space.) Is it still normal/expected to include that stud, or can I omit it? (BTW: both doors will go to the same closet so there's no perpendicular wall teeing into this one, in case that matters.)

Transportation is the largest single contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, accounting for about 30 percent of the total; 60 percent of that comes from cars and trucks. To reduce emissions, Coloradans would have to drive less.

Ikea launches deliveries by cargo bike (in Florence, Italy) www.firenzetoday.it

The article is in Italian; here's an automatic translation by Firefox: > New sustainable delivery service by the Swedish giant Ikea on Florence. In fact, customers will be able to choose to receive in their homes light products - up to a total weight of 30 kilos - via cargo bike. A way to help reduce traffic and city pollution that will be made possible by the Ikea Italia agreement with Ecopony and Robin Food, local and ethical delivery specialized in deliveries on two wheels. A green experimentation that sees Florence as the protagonist. > > “With the increasing diffusion of sales methods such as e-commerce and new purchasing habits, it is necessary to put in place actions that are sustainable in the long term – says Carlo Guandalini, IKEA Market Manager Florence – For this reason, even in the city of Florence, we have implemented an important plan linked to the logistics of the last mile to ensure that the path of our products has a positive impact, not only for the environment but for the entire community”. > > Florence was also among the first Italian cities that saw IKEA equip itself with a fleet of electric vehicles to make deliveries to the plan in zero emission mode: from last June 10 electric vehicles were progressively introduced to cover all deliveries in the city. The Swedish giant aims to deliver zero-impact deliveries by 2025.

Stop in the Name of The United Fruit Company! - Thompson SMG Riot Ammo (1925)

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/11207741 > In the 1920s an increasing number of corporations were acquiring machine guns for labor relations related reasons. Deterring striking employees. > > >Did you know that the Peters company made ammunition specifically for riot control for the Thompson submachine gun in the 1920s? And it wasn’t rubber bullets, either – it was paper-wrapped snakeshot. The cartridges were actually longer than a standard magazine would accept, necessitating the production of a special longer magazine to fit them. That magazine would hold 18 rounds, and was specially marked as such... > > >... At about 8 feet it made a pattern about 18 inches in diameter (from a rifled Tommy Gun barrel), and did not cycle the action... the proper way to use this ammo for crowd control: fire it into the pavement in front of the crowd, allowing it to ricochet up into the crowd at a lower velocity. It would be less lethal that way, but still a great way to lose an eye! > > Ian's video: [5:30] > https://youtu.be/ud3Csq6568k?si= > > [Old *Popular Mechanics* article that mentions this type of ammo.](https://books.google.pl/books?id=fdoDAAAAMBAJ&amp;pg=RA1-PA41&amp;lpg=RA1-PA41&amp;dq=Thompson+SMG+sidecar&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=r2hbkLk461&amp;sig=rbZpYd9snUcsevSCGUKaBjjhTRE&amp;hl=pl&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0CBMQ6AEwAGoVChMItpCSgJepyAIVwpRyCh2UzQYL#v=onepage&amp;q=Thompson%20SMG%20sidecar&amp;f=false)
