This whole soundtrack rules. That Filter + Crystal Method track is arguably my favorite from both those bands.

Basically. He's your typical swing voter. Went for Trump in 2016. Was keenly watching the 2024 primaries from the Republican side (Vivek and Hayley booster), but once Trump had it stitched up, seemed to support Biden. If you go back to the 2020 Democratic primary he actually supported Bernie when it was down to Bernie and Joe. Just all over the map.

Overall, wouldn't trade my home gym for much. But I do miss the community you get from going to a public gym. I met so many people I otherwise would never have met. Like a dance professor that had the same lifting schedule as me or the time USMNT player Ben Olsen brought some academy players in on a random day. I don't miss feeling rushed on equipment, or the commute to and from the gym, or being lectured for "dropping" weights when I do Pendlay Rows, but I do miss the community.

Roth always elevates the podcast when he's on. And Felix actually seemed engaged for this one, talking a lot of their favorite 2016 sickos in the Trump orbit.

I played last year after a pretty big gap (not 15 years, but close) and honestly it does not hit the same at all. Was thankful, it was pretty easy to put down compared to Vanilla and Burning Crusade. Just seems so streamlined now, I feel like I'm on a conveyor belt of various line fills up.

It was. In that they won the “restaurant wars” and did actually become classy. Our joke was that everything’s gone to such drek that a Taco Bell from today would be a high class experience
erik 2 weeks ago • 100%
My Shadworun campaigns implement a lot of this type of stuff. Like, for example, Taco Bell exists at our table, but instead of being considered low end fast food, it's high end fine dining, as they've continued to use the same ingredients since the early 2000s while everyone has been forced into a soy-based diet.
For some flavor text, I re-wrote a puff profile of Richard Spencer from like 2016 with our in game equivalent head of Humanis Policlub and I honestly didn't need to edit much for it to fit.
It's a setting that works great for exactly this type of thing.

Really have liked Alice Longyu Gao since I heard of her through that track she had Oli Sykes on. Wish she leaned into that screamy, heavy stuff a little more, but most of what she does is enjoyable regardless.

I really enjoyed the game circa 2014 or so. The game. The player base has individuals that are as toxic as reputation gives. But the matches were actually fairly slow paced and movement creep hadn't gotten incredible yet. Something very strategic about how the phases of the game went. The heroes were deep enough that you could become good with them on a level that impressed, but not so much so that you couldn't rotate between good "counters" to opponent's choices. I actually enjoyed how long the matches were. I usually only played when 2+ friends were also playing to mitigate the toxicity, but I had a blast doing it.
I remember a while back on here someone was asking how to get to a standing ab wheel rollout and today this video came into my timeline and it has some things I personally used along with some ideas I think are pretty inventive, especially putting a band around yourself.

At the more entry levels of filmmaking, nothing separates the wheat from the chaff faster than sound. Not only is it very underrated by a lot of budding, amateur filmmakers, but it's so easy to get wrong and so difficult to get right. A lot like finding a drummer for a fledgling band, finding a good sound designer is super hard to find, but so important.

I am happy that, for the most part, the computer handles the Pathfinder crunch, but I agree it is a bit much. I even have GM'd Shadowrun tables for like a decade now and find Pathfinder to be too much crunch haha

Oh, wow. I knew WotR and Kingmaker were very buggy too, but I didn't realize the turn based mode was a mod! Wild. Especially since Rogue Trader only really has turn based.
erik 1 month ago • 100%
I hear you on that. I haven't had a crashing bug that stopped me completely, but I've never had a game crash as much as Rogue Trader does. But, in some way I almost appreciate that because it stops me from playing a bit. It's the type of game I could really get sucked into and the crash pulls me out and lets me to other things with my 'me' time of the day. But maybe it just shouldn't crash and I should have more self discipline haha

Definitely have to turn on fast animations for combat in RT because so many character's turns are just recasting buffs. Also I do miss the "real time" combat setting from Wrath when you knew you could just bulldoze something and didn't want to have to do a full turn based thing.
erik 1 month ago • 100%
I would entirely agree with this if I wasn't playing Rogue Trader right now, and I think Owlcat have outdone themselves. I am enjoying RT more than even Wrath of the Righteous, which was already one of the best CRPGs I have played.

Owlcat's follow-up, Rogue Trader, does have co-op. It's Warhammer rather than Pathfinder, so your mileage may vary on how that different setting hits you. But it has a lot of the same great writing.
erik 1 month ago • 100%
I also really disliked the crusade mechanic and was happy in Rogue Trader it was just the slightly annoying ship battles as the mini-game of choice. Not nearly as frustrating and a time sink and feels more connected to your character, since it's your character's ship, than just sending some troops around while your party does the real shit.

For sure. We have him try a few bites of everything we make around the house and usually have him try at least a bit of something he's never had before at a restaurant when we eat at one. And definitely praise him for being adventurous when he does it. But he's still an all American burger and fries kid haha
Like you say, I'm hoping it's something he'll eventually grow out of. It was easier when he was a toddler and would just eat whatever we put in front of him. I still have a great video of him just shoveling some sauerkraut into his mouth like it's breakfast cereal.

Yeah, Walz is far from a lefty candidate, but given the track record of the dems, I thought when it came down to him and Shapiro, they would make the same bad choice they've made basically my entire life. Not a victory by any stretch, but at least not the worst option for a change.

Wrath of the Righteous was one of the best CRPGs I've ever played. Would recommend that. I'm playing Owlcat's followup right now: Rogue Trader, and loving it even more actually, but will save final verdict for when I finish it.

Just re-watched Metropolis and I love it a lot more than I did back then. Fantastic film with only a little bit of dated 3d animation, but the 2D stuff is gorgeous and definitely captures the feel of an earlier style.

Lords of Waterdeep is a modern classic imo. Like, it stands up to some all timers as a good board game that seems like a “board game person” game, but casual folks who mostly stick to like Monopoly can play.

Kettlebell clean and press might be what you’re looking for. You do it with substantially less weight, relying on higher reps and the ballistic movement of the exercise to bring the challenge. If you want that extra quad movement in there, you could make it a clean and push press. Gyms that aren’t ok with Olympic lifting often still are ok with kettlebells.
If you haven’t used bells before, I’d recommend doing them one arm at a time to get the technique down (which is a lot of fun, there’s a martial arts like “move your are around the kettlebell, not the kettlebell around your arm” type satisfaction to it) and then move on to two.

For sure. I think that 1:1 ratio accidentally got attached to total body weight just because it's easier to remember. If OP has access to reliable body fat detection, they can get an even better idea of good daily protein. And of course, all of this is just guidelines, different bodies react differently. There are plenty of people that react well to a ratio even higher that 1:1. I was just seeing OP struggling with 150g and so wanted to make sure they actually need 150g.
erik 2 months ago • 100%
I would disagree. See Stronger by Science here, which recommends .8 at the top end based on a meta-analysis of multiple studies: https://www.strongerbyscience.com/athlete-protein-intake/
Also this Jäger et al study is referenced often, which puts the top end at .9, which is approaching the "bro science" number, but still isn't quite there. https://jissn.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12970-017-0177-8
And this is specifically for folks looking to get particularly strong and not just lift for their health. Without OP's goals, cannot say for sure what would be best, but regardless, 1:1 is probably overkill.
erik 2 months ago • 100%
You are welcome to consume more protein for sure. I just see a lot of novice lifters hear the 1:1 ratio and think they've got to get an incredible amount of protein in them because they weigh something like 220 lbs. And they often think it's per current body weight, not target body weight. Goals are important in lifting in general too.
Since OP sounds like they are struggling with reaching a fairly average goal of 150g, just wanted to make sure they actually need 150g. Stronger by Science has a great collection of data on protein to really dig into what multiple studies have to say, half of which are meat protein versus plant protein, so should be helpful to any lifter: https://www.strongerbyscience.com/athlete-protein-intake/
No doubt personalized levels of thermogenesis will help OP realize overall caloric intake required to bulk or cut depending on their weight goals, so that's important too. But wasn't really at front of mind for me to be honest. Good point to bring up.
erik 2 months ago • 100%
The bro-science thing you'll often see is 1g per 1 lb of target body weight, but that's an over simplification. Most studies I've read put it more at .7g or .8g at most for 1 lb of target body weight, and this is only if you plan on getting incredibly beefy. I think most people simply lifting for their healthy can do .5g per 1lbs of target body weight. So bear that in mind when you're talking about your protein intake.
To add to the general discussion, vegan protein shakes will probably be a staple of your input. I'm not vegan, but it would be incredibly difficult for me to get to about the 120-140 grams of protein I do a day without my shake.

Yeah, it's easy to see how these 17 year olds that love going to see the latest blockbuster with their buddies and then think that's what strong looks like and try to be Chris Hemsworth or something and when a half year or lifting doesn't give it to them, they start juicing or something.

Jackman is especially interesting because when he had that body in The Wolverine, I remember reading articles about how he was happy he got into the 1,000 lbs Club while training for that film. It's powerlifting term for when your one rep max on your bench, squat and deadlift all add up to over 1,000 lbs. I remember that being my lifting goal when I read about that and when I hit it, I looked a lot more like X-Men Wolverine for sure haha It is surprisingly easy to hit the 1,000 lbs club and still look like a pretty normal guy.
Just goes to show how practical strength and Marvel looks don't always have a lot of overlap. Those lats, traps and low body fat do most of the work for The Wolverine Jackman, rather than the quads, posterior chain and chest that do most of the work on powerlifting moves.

It's not even just plastic, the type of gear a lot of guys get on to get bodies like The Rock is coming home to roost in terms of the damage it does to the body. There's this older sci-fi film called Yor Hunter from the Future released in '83, right at the tail end of what you're talking about. B-movie. Not worth watching unless you like so bad it's good stuff. But you can see in the promotional photos what was "big" and muscular looked like during that time:
Not to brag, but I have comparable measurements from about a decade of program lifting. I still have people regularly surprised I've been lifting as long as I have because I don't look like a professional wrestler. I look like Yor. Because I'm natty and mostly lifting for fun and health. And now I see teenagers getting on chemicals while their bodies are still developing because they want to look like what they see in Marvel films and it's really sad.
It's a wholesale rip-off of Jet Set Radio, but SEGA has barely touched the franchise in 20 years so you snooze, you lose. Actual cyberpunk story and isn't even named Cyberpunk. Maybe a little too easy, but hey, games are power fantasies, right? Nice, tight, single player experience. No skin store, no micro transactions, no games as a service filler. 60 fps on my Switch. Doesn't get much better than that.

From what I've read funds raised for the Biden-Harris campaign that don't involve at least one of them on the ticket could feasibly be hard to legally transfer to a different ticket. So, unless that's mistaken, I think Kamala is involved somehow anyway.

Bluesky is VC backed and could be rug pulled like twitter at basically any time. Mastodon is actually decentralized, like @gay_king_prince_charles@hexbear.net mentioned, and won't suffer the same fate. That pretty much made my decision for me. I deleted all my information off of Facebook years ago. Completely nuked my twitter. Haven't posted at Reddit in years. I'm only doing stuff like Lemmy and Mastodon that are actually decentralized and not owned by anyone nor need to pay the piper at some point.
It's not fool proof, they could still bottom out, but it's not guaranteed like it it with Bluesky; where it's more a matter of when than if.
That said, Bluesky has done a much better job of getting the "cool kids" over to it. A lot of weird/left twitter folks went there while their Mastodon account haven't seen posts in years. So, I don't begrudge anyone that goes to Bluesky too much, pretty much all my favorite podcasters are active there. But I'm done with this corporate shell game crap.

Seems like Scott has some major health issues. Really sad news all around.
Just wanted to recommend this free program from Stronger by Science if you're looking for a powerlifting based program. It's a little wonky, the 28 "programs" are basically modules for the press (bench or overhead), deadlift and squat divided up by frequency, intensity and/or volume. You then combine them together for a program. I have an incredibly hard time building upper body strength and size. My legs have always been good to me, I hit a 440 lbs squat during this for example. But I have never seen my arms peak above 16 inches around until after two months on this program where I went from about 15.75 to about 16.25 inches or so. My legs also blew up over 27 inches around now, and that's fine and all. But it's summer. Suns out, guns out and all that. Just wanted to pass it on if anyone is looking to for a change up in their lifting.
