How many times a day are you shown ads that are completely irrelevant?
Me personally, I’ve never once experienced the “they’re listening to my mic for ads” phenomenon. I think someone would notice by now either by seeing increased upload usage or a hot device- at least with current technology. On device machine learning will make this much easier to analyze without having to upload audio.
Not that I don’t think it’s entirely possible to listen right now, I just don’t think it’s occurring to unimportant people. I’m not particularly important or rich nor is anyone I know. It seems much more plausible to me that we’re just seeing conventional web tracking get a lot better + a healthy dose of confirmation bias.

What this demonstrates is how good tracking is now. They’re not listening to your microphone, at least not while your phone is in your pocket or whatever, because they don’t need to. They can already see your fingerprint, what websites you’re visiting, what your searching, and all of this applies to people you know as well- people who likely aren’t privacy conscious and share all contact info with whatever app is requesting. Listening to the mic is not necessary to suggest highly relevant ads.

Tiny needles make it pretty easy, if you can do phlebotomy you can shoot up with a 31ga needle. I was in lab tech school in the military and ended up shooting dope sometime in the 00s, but stopped before I got in any serious trouble. Those people who have to hit weird veins in odd places because they’ve ruined the rest blow my mind though. I guess if it’s between that and being dope sick it’s worth it in the short term.

Sounds like you need to communicate your desires. This is not limited to extroverts. It’s harder for us introverts but not impossible.
I’d ask for them to stop. If this isn’t followed, something written. If this isn’t followed, time to involve someone higher. I’m very reluctant to involve HR, they’re going to fuck with you very likely. However, your supervisor’s supervisor might be able to help. Important to slowly escalate and make a paper trail if the initial verbal ask doesn’t work out.
Also, did I read that correctly that sex is being discussed? As in sexual intercourse?

It only makes prodrugs that first need to be metabolized by CYP3A4 to be active less effective. This is a pretty small minority of drugs. It makes drugs that are inactivated by CYP3A4 more effective, which is the majority of them. It also only competitively inhibits the enzyme while the drug is in your system, it’s not permanently inhibiting the enzyme like a suicide inhibitor.

Absolutely. I never really thought much of OCZ to begin with, and sure it was a very early SSD, but damn. It crapped out way early the first time, at least in terms of I/O, and the second time it died it was just outside of RMA eligibility. Never again.

And you had to get the partition aligned (?) when you formatted it. I had a 120GB OCZ Agility I paid like $380 for. It was amazing loading in way before everyone in games, I remember always being first in my WoW clan raids. Left 4 Dead 2 also ripped on that SSD. It died within a year and the RMA replacement died within year as well. RIP

Still Wakes the Deep. Shit goes wrong on a Scottish oil rig in the 70s, it’s sorta like dead space mixed with alien isolation and a walking simulator. Stealth gameplay with some puzzles and a decent emotional narrative. I had a good time playing it and it’s on gamepass. Short and sweet.

I really doubt they’re listening to your microphone. Constantly uploading your audio would be noticeable in bandwidth and constantly analyzing audio on device would kill your battery - at least currently.
What this demonstrates is how good tracking by other methods is getting. You don’t need to listen to someone’s microphone when you know what they and their friends/coworkers are looking up online and likely bringing up in conversation. It’s trivial to fingerprint someone and track near everything they’re looking up online, and even if you’re privacy conscious, many of those you associate with share their contact list with every app that asks for it. This makes suggesting things your friends are looking up pretty easy. Add a bit of confirmation bias to the mix and you’ve got this “listening to the microphone” theory, because you’re not counting the number of times an ad isn’t something you’ve been recently discussing.

You could say the same thing for any Fallout/Elder Scrolls game, too. 'Boring ride through the country' < oblivion and Skyrim. 'Boring walk to the next area' <Fallout
Exploration is one of the most enjoyable parts of those games. It’s not boring in ES or FO because of all the things you find along the way. Walking from A to B and getting distracted for 2 hours at random POIs you find is a hallmark of these games.
This aspect was completely absent in Starfield, idk how they fucked up exploration so much.
it's a literal SPACE exploration game, how can you complain about travelling through space
Traveling != exploration. Eliminating the load screens just leaves you in boring space with no POIs to discover along the route.

It still works pretty well, not as effective as regular external NC of course, but the difference between transparency and isolation modes when chewing crunchy foods or using my electric toothbrush is very noticeable. Now I’m going to have to do a bit of an experiment with bone conduction headphones from a friend and ANC mode to see how well it’s working.
deranger 2 weeks ago • 100%
Some headphones now have internal noise cancellation, such as AirPods Pro and Max. I can hear it working when I’m chewing something crunchy or when I’m using my electric toothbrush and toggling between transparency and NC modes. Kinda curious if some other cans have this as well, it’s a nice feature. There are microphones inside the cup listening to internal sounds and cancelling those out as well as external sounds.

The people clamoring for traditional FPS flashlight took a lot away from the horror aspect. Being forced to choose between flashlight or weapon was great, sometimes I’d just be seeing from the muzzle flash. Having the flashlight and gun simultaneously ruined this deliberate disempowerment.
I played the shit out of this when it was released, really enjoyed it. Getting stoned and playing it in the dark on my Viewsonic P95f+ CRT was an absolutely blast.
Glad the article mentions Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay because that was a really dope game of the same era that I rarely see mentioned.

stand of the tide', which is when tide levels 'stand' at a maximum or minimum
Isn’t that when it’s just standing at high or low tide?
Some googling leads me to find it’s either “ebb tide” or “flood tide” depending on whether it’s halfway falling or halfway rising, respectively. I’m not sure if this is exactly half way though, some diagrams make it appear that any time in between in either one of these, not necessarily half way exactly.

I had a really pleasant drive through Croatia, it didn’t seem too crazy to me. This was more than a few years ago though. Drove from Plitvice Lakes park to Split by way of some rural as fuck road through the woods, eventually getting on some highway, A1 I believe. My expectations may have been altered by the years of driving in Italy.
Going through the tunnel on A1 was a cool experience. One side was green, temperate, and humid, then we cut through a tunnel, the other side was brown, dry, and hot. One minute of driving completely changed the microclimate. This was northeast of Zadar.
Edit: unrelated to driving but my girlfriend and I at the time went driving downstream from Plitvice lakes to find a place to swim. Ended up pulling off the side of the road near a river and walking upstream until we found a spot. We didn’t realize it was behind somebodies house but they came out and let us swim anyways. A super cool experience. We literally wandered into their natural river pool and they didn’t care.

Eat more good food and lift some weights to gain muscle mass. You don’t have to be one of those giant dudes but a bit of definition goes a long way. It’ll also help prevent you from being frail when you’re older. I’d like to continue opening jars and carrying my own groceries for as long as possible. There are a lot of health benefits, and you don’t even need to go to the gym if you get adjustable weights and a multipurpose bench. I’ve been doing exactly this and I’m up 40 lbs and look better. I’m still a tall lanky dude at 6’3”, but I’m not nearly as skinny (165->205lbs).

Why not just use ublock medium mode?
Roughly similar to using Adblock Plus with many filter lists + NoScript with 1st-party scripts/frames automatically trusted. Unlike NoScript however, you can easily point-and-click to block/allow scripts on a per-site basis.

Poster was made fun of in the past for saying Signal gave metadata to the feds. He has a learning disability (regarded = deliberately misspelled R slur). They’re looking for someone else to corroborate the metadata claim.
That’s my interpretation at least.

Benzodiazepine addiction. Was abusing etizolam at first then graduated to clonazolam and was getting fucked up and going to work. I have no idea how I didn’t get fired honestly. I have some videos of myself doing things and I’m clearly fucked, but I suppose I didn’t get that twisted for work. My memory went to shit and a bunch of other things did too, because who gives a shit when you’re constantly wrecked. Weight dropped from normal 185lbs to a skinny ass 165lbs. Mind you, I’m 6’3”. It wasn’t a good look.
It took me 2 years to slowly taper down and that still was a pretty shitty process. Now I’m 9 months clean and up to 205 lbs by lifting weights and actually eating.
What a nightmare. Fuck benzos and godspeed to anyone who’s been using them for longer than a few weeks. Even at clinical doses you’re going to be in some shit when you stop. You’ll be glad you did, though. I’m helping a friend quit etizolam after I told him of my problems and he told me of his addiction. He’s doing great and making a lot of progress on the taper. It helps so much to have someone you can talk to.
A less serious answer - Reddit. Fuck em for killing the apps. Lemmy has been pretty great except for a few rare encounters with tankies. I genuinely enjoy posting here, the smallness is great.

Reddit is winning over advertisers by showing that it’s different than other internet platforms, which often rely on users’ identities and personal information to target ads. Instead, Reddit is targeting people based on their interests, relying on the site’s deeply detailed communities — called subreddits — to match advertisers with potential customers.
Knowing which subreddits I’m following IS using my data, assholes.
Edit: I’m probably wrong about what they’re doing, see below.

I took a little liberty with what “downloads folder” meant. It’s not in my root downloads folder, it’s sorted out into a music folder. It was a download though.
I’m just pretty impressed I managed to keep my music library going continuously for 24 years. 20 of those years are just single HDD no redundancy storage, just hopping HDD to HDD.

Is it possible to transfer favorite communities from an account on one server to another? Say for example I'd like to have an alt with the same favorites on another server for a backup. Is this possible with wefwef or other means? Looking to get my main off lemmy.world to help load balance, but I don't want to refavorite everything; if I could somehow keep them in sync that would be ideal.
