Serenity for sure. I love the 90s aesthetic and would like to see it make a comeback. At the very least I'd like to see their Ladybird browser become mainstream - we really need more alternatives to the Chromium family.

I'm not moving any goalposts. You're the one arguing about the semantics around "Plasma", and I keep saying that's irrelevant.

Refer back to my original comment which was, and I quote:

So, are there any plans to reduce the bloat in KDE, maybe even make a lightweight version (like LXQt) that’s suitable for older PCs with limited resources?

    To clarify, here I was:

    • Referring to KDE + default apps that are part of a typical KDE installation
    • Stating that a typical KDE installation is bloated compared to a typical lightweight DE like LXQt
    • Saying with the intention that the "bloat" is RELATIVE, with respect to a older PC with limited resources

The ENTIRE point of my argument was the KDE isn't really ideal RELATIVELY, for older PCs with limited resources, and I'm using LXQt here are a reference.

In a subsequent test, here's a direct apples-to-apples(ish) component comparison:

    Component Process_KDE RAM_KDE Process_LXQt RAM_LXQt
    WM kwin_x11 99 openbox 18
    Terminal konsole 76 qterminal 75
    File Manager Dolphin 135 pcmanfm-qt 80
    File Archiver ark 122 Lxqt-archiver 73
Text Editor kwrite 121 featherpad 73
    Image Viewer gwenview 129 lximage-qt 76
    Document Viewer okular 128 qpdfview-qt6 51
    Total 810 446

plasmashell was sitting at 250MB btw in this instance btw.

The numbers speak for themselves - no one in their right minds would consider KDE (or plasmashell, since you want to be pedantic) to be "light", in RELATION to an older PC with limited resources - which btw, was the premise of my entire argument. Of course KDE or plasmashell might be considered "light" on a modern system, but not an old PC with 2GB RAM. Whether something is considered light or bloated is always relative, and in this instance, it's obvious to anyone that KDE/plasmashell isn't "light".

I tested this myself on two identical VMs with 2GB RAM, one installed with Fedora 40 KDE, and another with Fedora 40 LXQt, both set to use X11 (because LXQt isn’t Wayland ready yet), both updated and running the latest kernel 6.8.10-300.fc40.

I logged into the DEs, opened only two terminal windows and nothing else, ran, and ran htop:

The KDE VM was unsable when I disabled swap - it completely froze on me. Meanwhile, LXQt chugged on just fine. Of

Of course, I could get rid of some bloat like akonadi, so I did that and rebooted my machine. Then I compared just the essential components, but I excluded plasmashell because it includes stuff like the panel and notifications, unlike LXQt where they're all separate components so you can't really compare them:

    Component Process_KDE RAM_KDE Process_LXQt RAM_LXQt
    WM kwin_x11 99 openbox 18
    Terminal konsole 76 qterminal 75
    File Manager Dolphin 135 pcmanfm-qt 80

You're arguing semantics and that's not the point I'm trying to argue here. Forget the term "Plasma". I don't really care about what the DE is branded as or what's in "Plasma" the software package. When I say "KDE", I mean the desktop + all the basic default/recommended apps that you'd see on a typical KDE installation, such as Dolphin, Konsole, Kate, Kalculator, Spectacle etc that's part of the KDE project. IDK whether the apps I've mentioned are considered part of "Plasma" or not, but again, that's not the point, I'm saying this is what I meant when I said "KDE" - and what most people would expect when they picture a "KDE" environment.

Anyways, I tested this myself on two identical VMs with 2GB RAM, one installed with Fedora 40 KDE, and another with Fedora 40 LXQt, both set to use X11 (because LXQt isn't Wayland ready yet), both updated and running the latest kernel 6.8.10-300.fc40. I logged into the DEs, opened only two terminal windows and nothing else, ran, and ran htop. The screenshot speaks for itself:

And when I tried disabling swap on both machines, the KDE machine was practically unusable, with only 53MB RAM remaining before it completely froze on me. Meanwhile, the LXQt one was still very much usable even without swap enabled.

I'd like to see you try running without swap and see how it fares. And if you think it's unfair disabling swap on a 2GB machine - try installing LXQt yourself, disable swap and see for yourself how much more usable it is compared to KDE.

And this is why I say KDE is bloated and not suitable for old machines.

Edit: Also, check out the memory consumption listed by a user in this post: https://lemmy.nz/comment/9070317

Edit2: Here's a screenshot of the top 30 processes on my test systems, side-by-side:

Of the above, I calculated the usage of the top 10 processes specific to each respective DE, and you can see that KDE's memory usage is almost double that of LXQt. Had I counted all the DE-specific processes, it'd no doubt be a lot more than double.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this #OptGreen project isn't talking specifically about Plasma, is it? They don't mention Plasma anywhere on the page they linked.

In any case, that's irrelevant, also, I don't doubt that KDE can't run at all under the specs you mentioned - that's not the issue. The question is, how much free/usable RAM do you actually have on that machine - let's say with no apps open first, and with then check again with Konsole + Dolphin + KWrite/Kate open? And for fun, fire up Konqueror as well and check again.

Edit: Screenshots proving that what you're saying is not correct:

I'm not talking specifically about Plasma, I'm talking about the "DE" part of KDE in general; and particularly in this context of repurposing and extending the life of old PCs.

I find it a bit ironic for KDE to be pushing this message, when it's a heavy DE (relatively speaking) - it's NOT what anyone would have in mind when when selecting a DE for an old PC.

For instance, take LXQt - run the default/recommended file browser, terminal and text editor, and compare it with KDE + equivalents - you'd see a significant difference in resource consumption. On a system with low RAM, that extra bit of free memory makes a big difference, as it could mean avoiding the penalty hit of the swap file, which you'd invariably run into as soon as you fire up a modern Web browser. So it's vital that the DE use as little resources as possible on such a machine.

The problem is that games don't run at all or require major effort to run without issues.

A major cause for that is the distro - when it comes to gaming, the distro makes a huge difference as I outlined previously. The second major cause is the flavor of Wine you chose (Proton-GE is the best, not sure what you used). The third major cause is checking whether or not the games are even compatible in the first place (via ProtonDB, Reddit etc) - you should do this BEFORE you recommend Linux to a gamer.

In saying all that, I've no idea about pirated stuff though, you're on your own on that one - Valve and the Wine developers obviously don't test against pirated copies, and you won't get much support from the community either.

The following list of software packages is required for ntfs file system support: ntfs-3g / ntfsprogs.

First of all, make sure you install ntfsprogs-ntfs3 from the AUR (this package doesn't install the old/buggy ntfs-3g driver).

Once it's installed, you can then then attempt to fix drive using sudo ntfsfix /dev/nvme0n1p2 --clear-dirty.

Run it a second time to verify, and that should do the trick. No need to boot into Windows.

Btw, in case you're mounting this drive manually, make sure you specify -t ntfs3, otherwise it'd use the old/buggy ntfs-3g driver - which we don't want. In fact, I'd say get rid of ntfs-3g if you've got it - no point keeping it around if you're on a recent kernel.

Unfortunately you chose the wrong distro for your friend - Linux Mint isn't good for gaming - it uses an outdated kernel/drivers/other packages, which means you'll be missing out on all the performance improvements (and fixes) found in more up-to-date distros. Gaming on Linux is a very fast moving target, the landscape is changing at a rapid pace thanks to the development efforts of Valve and the community. So for gaming, you'd generally want to be on the latest kernel+mesa+wine stack.

Also, as you've experienced, on Mint you'd have to manually install things like Waydroid and other gaming software, which can be a PITA for newbies.

So instead, I'd highly recommend a gaming-oriented distro such as Nobara or Bazzite. Personally, I'm a big fan of Bazzite - it has everything you'd need for gaming out-of-the-box, and you can even get a console/Steam Deck-like experience, if you install the -deck variant. Also, because it's an immutable distro with atomic updates, it has a very low chance of breaking, and in the rare ocassion that an update has some issues - you can just select the previous image from the boot menu. So this would be pretty ideal for someone who's new to Linux, likes to game, and just wants stuff to work.

In saying that, getting games to run in Linux can be tricky sometimes, depending on the game. The general rule of thumb is: try running the game using Proton-GE, and if that fails, check Proton DB for any fixes/tweaks needed for that game - with this, you would never again have to spend hours on troubleshooting, unless you're playing some niche game that no one has tested before.

As an actual M1+Asahi user and a gamer: Asahi is not there yet. Right now, if you're on macOS, Crossover (or Porting Kit) and/or Parallels is able to run more games and with better performance compared to Asahi (using krun + FEX). Also, Steam on macOS (non-native) is much more peformant compared to Asahi, where it's currently slow and glitchy.

But that will all change in the future once the Vulkan driver and TSO patches are ready. FEX is also seeing a lot of improvements, so by the end of the year, there's a good chance that gaming on Asahi would be much better than macOS.

Why not just leave them as NTFS for now? The new in-kernel NTFS3 driver is actually pretty decent (since kernel 6.2), and shouldn't pose any issues if you're just using it as a bulk data store.

Eventually when you replace the disks, you can can format your new disks as ext4 (or even better, use btrfs or bcachefs).

Sounds like an issue with your WiFi adapter/driver. You can verify this by creating a mobile hotspot on your phone and connecting your PC to it and see if you get the same issue, if you do then it proves it's got nothing to do with your router.

Another thing you can check is your journalctl logs - run journalctl -f before launching the game, then run the game and quit it when you run into the DNS issue, and check the logs at the time the issue occurred. If there's indeed a hardware/driver issue, the errors should show up in the logs.

If it's a driver issue, there may not be much you can do about it besides reporting the bug and implementing some sort of workaround (eg using a VPN). Of course, depending on the error, there may be a fix you can apply, like turning of aspm for your chip. A better option would be to replace the WiFi chip/adapter you're using and get something that's better supported under Linux, like something with an Intel or Atheros chip. But check journalctl first and see how it goes from there.

It's not that simple. The biggest issue is that Apple Silicon uses 16K memory page sizes instead of the 4K pages used by pretty much every other architecture out there. This means you'd need a kernel patched for 16K pages - but that would also cause an issue with drivers and other apps designed with 4K pages in mind. So there's a lot of work done in that area to get both the kernel and apps working. Even then, some apps may never work, and so you'd have to resort to using hacks like microVMs to run a 4K kernel and then run the app on top of it, but that introduces it's own set of issues of course.

Then there's the issue of hardware components - of course Apple hasn't open-sourced any of their firmware/drivers, so most of the Asahi drivers were developed by reverse engineering. The GPU was the biggest piece of work, the reverse engineering done to get it to a workable state by the Asahi team was nothing short of genius. In fact the current state of the OpenGL driver is so good that it's far, far more compliant to the spec compared to macOS itself - macOS only supports OpenGL upto 4.1 and is not certified either (and technically no longer supported by Apple), whereas Asahi supports up till 4.6 - and it's still being improved. See: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/02/asahi-linux-projects-opengl-support-on-apple-silicon-officially-surpasses-apples/

Similarly, a lot of wizardry was done to get the sound going, and not only did they get it going - they even improved the DSP so it sounds even better than macOS! (Scroll down to the speakers section here: https://asahilinux.org/2024/01/fedora-asahi-new/).

But in spite of all that, there's still a lot of work to be done, such as getting Thunderbolt and DisplayPort going, as well as improving compatibility with x86 apps (using krun and FEX) and more GPU improvements etc and support for the M3 and newer chips.. Even then, Asahi is already in a usable daily-driver state for many users, and it's improving at a rapid pace.

So long story short, the Asahi team had to do a ton of work to get it all going on a complex, closed piece of hardware like Apple Silicon - and it's genius levels of work, the level of which I can barely comprehend - and isn't something any random distro can pull off.

    Bazzite. Here's why:

    • Optimised for gaming (gaming optimised kernel, common tweaks pre-applied, all common gaming apps pre-installed like Steam, Mangohud etc)
    • All necessary drivers pre-installed (game controllers, RGB, and even proprietary nVidia)
    • A Steam-Deck like gaming experience, if you want (the Deck variant boots directly to Steam)
    • Immutable and atomic (image-based OS updates, so updates either work or don't - there's no chance of a broken state)
    • Easy rollbacks (just select the previous image in the GRUB menu)

    But since you said:

how to squeeze the best performance out of this

and if you're really serious about squeezing the best performance, then check out the Arch-based CachyOS - unlike most other Linux distros, Cachy has optimised x86-64-v3 and v4 packages in their repos, which means apps can make use of advanced CPU instructions such as SSE3, AVX512 etc. Most other Linux distros on the other hand still use x86-64-v1 for compatibility reasons, which unfortunately means that you'd be missing out on all the cool new optimised CPU instructions introduced over the past 16 years.

You can read more about microarchitecture levels (aka MARCH) here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86-64#Microarchitecture_levels

In addition to the MARCH, Cachy's packages have other optimisations such as LTO/PGO, optimised kernel with the BORE and Rusty schedulers which are better for gaming, plus several performance-oriented tweaks which you'd otherwise have to do manually on Arch (such as makepkg.conf tweaks, pacman.conf tweaks etc).

Finally, Cachy are always on the bleeding edge when it comes to gaming/driver/kernel/performance related stuff, so you'll get all the good stuff even before Bazzite or other optimised distros. For instance, Cachy was the first distro to include the new nVidia driver which has explicit sync support for better Wayland compatibility, and they're always on top of major Arch developments and provide detailed announcements which are relevant to gamers and performance freaks.

Eg, here's their recent recent nVidia announcement:

    Hi @here,

as you maybe noticed, we have rolled out the new NVIDIA Driver, which includes the explicit sync protocol and tearing for Vulkan. We have been prioritized to move this forward to finally resolve the wayland situation. Additionally arch has pushed CUDA to 12.5, which is NOT compatible with the current 550 driver (it needs the 555 Driver).

The beta driver is not perfect, but so far we are applying some fixes to avoid issues and restore performance problems with disabling the GSP Firmware load. This is handled via the "cachyos-settings" package.

Anyways, since some people maybe have problems with this driver, here is a short instruction to manually downgrade and block the driver:

    [...]

If you are facing issues with the new NVIDIA Driver, reproduce the issues and then run "sudo nvidia-bugreport.sh" and report it to their forum: https://forums.developer.nvidia.com/c/gpu-graphics/linux/148

We are also shipping now an precompiled nvidia-open module. This will be also as default installed for users, which have supported cards as soon NVIDIA releases the 560 drivers.

    The CachyOS Team

So as you can see, they're pretty on to it with this sorta stuff.

Now the Bazzite team are also like the Cachy guys and keep up with this stuff, but because they're based on Fedora, they can't be as bleeding edge or as optimised as Arch. So it's up to you - if you prefer stability, a primarily gaming-focused optimisations, and want something that "just works" then get Bazzite; or if you want an ultra-optimised distro to squeeze out the most performance out of your box but also don't mind ocassionally diving into the terminal and getting your hands dirty, then get CachyOS.

I wouldn't recommend it in your case. Mind you, Arch is easy enough to install with the archinstall script or say using EndeavourOS, but the issues come afterwards. For starters, you'll need to occasionally deal with .pacsave/.pacnew files when you do an update, keep up with Arch news and be aware of breaking changes which may require some non-trivial manual intervention, like in this post for example: https://lemmy.nz/post/7648427

So if you're after something that "just works", then Arch isn't for you. Since you're into gaming and you're lazy, Bazzite would be an excellent choice as its an immutable OS with atomic updates (updates either work or don't, there's no middle/broken state). But if you're after a more traditional distro (ie, non-immutable), Nobara or Pop!_OS also work well for gaming.

If you want to make it fancy we could do a presentation type thing, like via slidesgo.com or similar, but since this is on/for Lemmy, I think we should just keep it simple and make it a normal post.

For the anniversary day, maybe we could have a post showcasing a few highlights of our community over the past year, something like Spotify's Wrapped, but for Lemmy - so maybe a highlight of the most upvoted posts/comments, most profilic posters, membership counts, major server changes and little victories (maybe share some of your experiences in keeping the ship afloat)?

You can sill use Medicare to create the USB and then add your favorite antimalware rescue CD to it, like the Kaspersky/Avira ones, but if it's an unknown malware you'd have to use other analysis tools like Sysinternals RootkirRevealer, Autoruns etc. If you want to fix Windows stuff then it's best to get a WinPE-based live CD with these tools, like Sergei Strelec, Gandalf etc.

Before y'all get excited, the press release doesn't actually mention the term "open source" anywhere.

Winamp will open up its code for the player used on Windows, enabling the entire community to participate in its development. This is an invitation to global collaboration, where developers worldwide can contribute their expertise, ideas, and passion to help this iconic software evolve.

This, to me, reads like it's going to be a "source available" model, perhaps released under some sort of a Contributor License Agreement (CLA). So, best to hold off any celebrations until we see the actual license.

This has nothing to do with Arch or Bazzite, it's actually a bug in recent kernels. Switching to Mint only fixed it for you because Mint uses an old kernel.

The fix/workaround is to enable "above 4G decoding" and "resizable BAR" in your BIOS. If your BIOS does not have these options, you can either downgrade to an earlier kernel (or OS image if you're on Bazzite), or switch to a patched kernel like the Cachy kernel.

You cannot go back after trying it

I did! Used to have a Samsung 49" ultrawide. After using it for a couple of years, I sold it and got a 16:10 32" QHD, which I found worked better for me (+ one or two laptop screens for chat / random stuff when I'm doing serious work).

The biggest issue I had with the ultrawide is that most of the games that I played weren't optimised for it, especially in some games where things like the mini-map might be at the far end of the screen, or worse, if it was an older game then you'd have to put up with black bars, or play the game in windowed mode.

Is that all? Will that remove all the traces of arch?

There will be some other minor dot files in your /home which you might want to review, like .bashrc, .bash_profile, .profile etc. These should be mostly harmless, but if you don't recall customising them, then yeah free to nuke all the dot files. Also be aware that some programs also leave their configs outside the .config folder, like Firefox might have a .mozilla folder, GTK programs might create a .themes folder, vim has .vim. So you might want to review and delete these as well, if you want a clean config.

As for the last step - just before you boot into your new distro, you might to get rid of the Arch/Endeavour entries from your ESP/UEFI. Run efibootmgr to see your current UEFI boot entries, then nuke the entries using efibootmgr --delete-bootnum -b #.

And to get rid of the GRUB configs, delete your <ESP>/EFI/grub folder. I'm guessing your /boot is on your root partition? If not then you'll also need to delete /boot/grub.

Now when you install your next distro, you should get a nice and clean GRUB install.

    1. No
    2. You'll need to delete your ~/.config, ~/.local, ~/.cache ( and maybe ~/.var, which is your Flatpak app data/cache). Might be best to rename your .config instead of outright deleting it, just in case you need to restore some old config.
    3. It's been a while since I used Nobara, but IIRC it only creates the default @ and @home subvolumes.
4,5. Nobara should have Timeshift installed by default.

Honestly though, since you said that you want something that "just works" for gaming and coding, you should just get Bazzite. Bazzite is an immutable distro and everything is set up to work out-of-the-box. You never have to worry about broken updates again due to atomic updates and image rollbacks. You can directly boot from a previous image from GRUB (no need to restore it first), pin known good images to your GRUB, and even rollback to any previous image via the web (upto 90 days) - all with just a single command. And for coding, you can easily set up a Distrobox container to install all your tools and IDEs etc, it integrates well with the host OS so you won't even notice/care that it's inside a container.

How the xz backdoor highlights a major flaw in Nix https://shadeyg56.vercel.app/posts/nixos/xz-backdoor/

The main issue is the handling of security updates within the Nixpkgs ecosystem, which relies on Nix's CI system, Hydra, to test and build packages. Due to the extensive number of packages in the Nixpkgs repository, the process can be slow, causing delays in the release of updates. As an example, the updated xz 5.4.6 package took nearly 5 days to become available in the unstable branch! Fundamentally, there needs to be a change in how security fixes are handled in Hydra. As stated in the article, Nix was lucky to be unaffected, but multiple days to push out a security patch of this severity is concerning, even if there was no reason for concern.

[RESOLVED][PSA] Bazzite-Deck Users Beware: Your AMD GPU's TDP might be capped to 15 watts!

#Edit: This has been resolved now. ---- For those of you who've been using the Steam Deck variant of Bazzite on desktops/HTPCs with AMD GPUs - beware that currently there's a bug affecting (some?) users, where the GPU's TDP is capped to just 15W! You can check your settings by running a tool like LACT (`ujust install-lact`): ![](https://lemmy.nz/pictrs/image/4ceb9022-3e4d-449a-8594-1c80f78ee40d.png) As you can see, LACT shows the current limit is 15W, but it can actually go upto 280W on my card. A bug report for this was [opened last year](https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite/issues/320), but it was closed as fixed, but at least one other user (besides me) [has been experiencing it](https://github.com/ublue-os/bazzite/issues/657) - so check your wattage, you might be affected too! At the moment there are no actual fixes - but you can try the workaround posted in the original bug report. Also, using tools like LACT or corectrl isn't a fix unfortunately, because as soon as you go into game mode (or reboot), the limit resets back to 15W. I'm currently troubleshooting this with a couple of the developers, and hopefully we may get to bottom of this soon. As for the performance impact - here's a screenshot of Last Epoch running at a glorious **4 FPS**, thanks to the caps: ![](https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/1218225210516439040/1218454569642889316/20240316_183448.jpg?ex=6607b93f&is=65f5443f&hm=103c6ac611a832718a04ab2ced4a3d3263820906e3b871931e2fc8476ab92e49&)

    btop++ v1.3.2 Released - GPU support for AMD ROCm v6 github.com

In case you guys missed it - btop++ has had for GPU monitoring [for a while](https://github.com/aristocratos/btop/pull/529) now. However, it didn't work with AMD ROCm v6.0 until a few hours ago (v1.3.2)! To get GPU monitoring to work, you'll need to compile btop with GPU support, or used a distro-provided package compiled with GPU support. Arch users for instance can use the [btop-gpu-git](https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/btop-gpu-git) package for this. The other catch is that right now the monitoring options are pretty basic, so if you're really interested in proper GPU monitoring, you might want to stick with [nvtop](https://github.com/Syllo/nvtop). But hopefully that changes in the near future now that btop has basic GPU support!

Minisforum UM780 XTX - Ordering Dramas, Network Errors and BIOS Update Woes

A couple of months ago, I came across the [Minisforum UM780 XTX](https://store.minisforum.com/products/minisforum-um780-xtx). People were raving about it at r/MiniPCs and r/Homelab - finally, we have a mini PC with a Zen4 CPU, decent graphics and compute performance, a good TDP window, excellent IOMMU grouping for virtualization, and future expansion capabilities (+Oculink!), which makes it suitable for both home lab and gaming scenarios. This seemed like the perfect option for me. #Ordering Dramas - Part 1 I decided to buy directly from Minisform. Normally I'd prefer buying from local or well-known retailers like Amazon or eBay, but since the UM780 was brand new at the time, no one else stocked it. I used PayPal to place my order. It was going well, until the payment screen got seemingly frozen at the "One more step... Finish paying at Micro Computer Tech Limited.." screen. I waited and waited and nothing happened. Had no other option other than to close the window, because it was going nowhere. Went back to my order on the Minisforum page and it looked like it hadn't been processed. Got no confirmation email either. Sweet, so I tried making the payment again, and this time it went thru just fine. A while later I decided to check my bank account, and it was just as I feared - I was charged twice! So looks like the payment for the first failed transaction did indeed go thru. No worries, PayPal are usually good at this stuff, so I raised a ticket with them, provided screenshots etc, and I had full confidence I'd get my money back, so I didn't worry about it any further. Meanwhile, my actual order was seemingly progressing well - Minisforum had surprisingly shipped out my device the very next day, and was expected to arrive in just 3-4 days (via DHL)! It was pretty impressive, given that I live in New Zealand and getting stuff shipped here generally takes a while. Which was also a good thing, because I was going away on vacation in three weeks, and no one would've been around to receive the package (and I also wanted to set up a VPN on my box before I left). I checked the tracking two days later, and I noticed something strange - the package was bouncing around in Hong Kong, and it seemingly looked like it was going back to the sender! I thought I was reading the log incorrectly or maybe it was one of those tracking quirks, so I decided to check it again the next the day. Day 3. I checked the tracking, and the status said that the package was indeed returned back to the sender! WTF! I checked my emails, and once again, there was nothing. I immediately contacted Minisforum for an explanation. They replied the next day, saying that they recalled my shipment because I had a PayPal dispute open (even though I already got back my money) and that according to their company policy, they had to cancel the order and they'd refund my second transaction as well. Double WTF. #Ordering Dramas - Part 2 I was pissed off, but I was still really, really dead set on getting the UM780 - and that too before Christmas. I immediately placed a new order. This time around, thankfully, the order went thru without a hitch. If the last time was any indication, I expected that the package would be again sent out the next day, and that I'd receive it within a week. I checked my mails the next day and there was no tracking number yet. The order confirmation email *did* say there may be a 3-5 day delay due to the Christmas rush, so I decided to be patient. I checked again, 6 days later, and there were still no updates - so I reached out to Minisforum for for an update. They replied saying: > Your order is already being shipped, and the logistics information has not been updated yet. > It is expected that the logistics information will be updated to you within 5-7 days, we will inform you in time. I check again a week later, and there were still no updates. I'm starting to panic a bit, as it'd been two weeks since I'd placed the order and I still hadn't received a shipping number, never mind the actual product itself. And I knew for a fact that they had them in stock, since my old order was just returned, so it couldn't have been a stock issue. I also had just a week left before my holiday, so I ask them for an update. They responded saying: > Your package has been shipped, but the company name and address you filled in, please confirm what the company name is and send it to us. WTF. They keep saying that my package was shipped, yet they're unable to provide the tracking number.. which didn't make any sense to me. So I ask them what the tracking number was, and also provided my company name (which I already provided in the order form, so not sure why they were asking for it again). I had it shipped to my work address since we have a bit of an issue with package thefts at home, and I didn't want to risk it. They responded with: > After the company name is corrected, the tracking number can be updated and shipping can begin tomorrow under normal circumstances. Bastards. Which means they never even shipped my package in the first place, and I was just f***** around with for the last couple of weeks. WTF. Why did they even say that my order was being shipped? If they needed more information to ship my package, why didn't the first agent pick it up and just straight up lied about it? And why did the second agent say that it was shipped as well? None of this made any sense to me. I finally received my tracking number the next day, but being this close to the holidays, I'd lost all hope of receiving my PC before my vacation. Now there was a bigger issue of who was going to receive the package, since my office would be closed as well. Thankfully, my colleague volunteered to receive it, so I redirected the package to his address. And it finally arrived, just a day after I went on my holiday. Sigh. Oh well, at least it arrived at last, and in one piece. But I had to wait until the new year to unbox it. #Unboxing and Network Issues I got back to work and found that my colleague had left the package on my desk. Woohoo! It's unboxing time! Finally, after all that drama and waiting, I get to play with my new toy. 64 GB DDR5, 5.2Ghz Zen4, USB4, Oculink, dual 2.5GbE... this thing is going to rock! Or so I thought. After hunting around for a bit for a suitable distro, I decided to go back to my old favorite - Arch, with Hyprland, and the latest Xanmod kernel with the fancy new x86-64-v4 optimizations, and everything seemed to be sweet. [![](https://lemmy.nz/pictrs/image/59036f1c-100e-45ca-8f28-0f668a9c75d1.png)](https://lemmy.nz/pictrs/image/6264d947-7444-426f-950e-4ba3e70f0360.png) Except, I noticed that my dmesg was being constantly spammed by various "BadTLP" errors from a PCIe device. An inspection via `lspci` showed that the culprit was one of the NICs, ie the RTL8125 2.5GBE controller. A Google search suggested there were others out there too getting similar errors with this chip, and various fixes were suggested, but nothing worked - short of disabling the NIC itself, which I didn't want to. I finally managed to [come across a post](https://forum.level1techs.com/t/minisforum-um780-xtx-has-excellent-iommu-groups/204221) from a random website called "level1techs", where it was mentioned that there was a [new BIOS version](https://www.minisforum.com/new/support?lang=en#/support/page/download/95) (1.05) which fixed the BadTLP errors! The release notes stated: 1.Update PI to 1.1.0.1a. 2.Set BASE_BOARD_VERSION to 1.1 for 1.1 MotherBoard. 3.Fix Network Stack load default issue. 4.Fix RGB LED load default issue. 5.Enbale pluton. 6.Add Enable option under Global C-State Control. 7.Fix WHEA-Logger 17 error in event viewer. That looked promising! #BIOS Update Woes Now the big question was - how do I update the BIOS frrom Linux? fwupdmgr is usually the tool for that these days, however, while it seemed that fwupdmgr *did* support updating the BIOS, there weren't any updates available via the LVFS. I guess LVFS updates for a small brand like Minisforum, with no official Linux support, would've been too good to be true... Another search later, I found [this Reddit post](https://old.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/comments/17mu8i5/comment/k7ve25h/) with instructions on how to manually flash the update from a USB drive and the EFI shell, so I gave that a try. No issues kicking off the update, it seemed to be going off well but was a bit slow, so I decided to go and make a cup of tea. I got back to my desk, only to find a blank screen, with the RGB panel on the Minisforum flashing away in a loop (which in itself was strange, since I'd disabled the RGB panel previously). I waited and waited, and the screen remained blank. I went into panic mode. Google was no help this time unfortunately. In fact, I found several posts saying NOT to update the BIOS on Minisforum devices, as there was a high chance of bricking it - apparently these Mini PCs do not have a backup BIOS or a recovery option, unlike most PCs these days! To throw salt on the wounds, I came across another [concerning post](https://old.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/comments/165ylyg/a_little_concerned_about_minis_forum_response/) which suggested that Minisforum may not even cover this under warranty! Comments like the one below did not inspire any confidence, and I wish I read these before attempting to flash the BIOS: > I had a UM690 that was bricked by a BIOS update. Here's the fun thing about minisforum computers: there's no way to reset or flash the BIOS if things go bad. The BIOS update also happens in windows. I tried updating my BIOS and halfway through, it just died and never came back. > > I was fortunate that minisforum was willing to fully refund my purchase but I had to pay $120 to ship it back to Hong Kong. > > Be very, very cautious about updating the BIOS. These are not robust machines. I was tempted to power cycle the box, but instead, I took a couple of deep breaths and decided to just wait it out and see if something changes. 15 minutes later, I noticed the RGB loop on the box slowed down. I thought it was just my imagination, so I kept staring at it and all of a sudden, my monitor flashed - and I got a "Secure Boot Violation" error. ![](https://lemmy.nz/pictrs/image/afb794a8-7998-4750-8049-fca247b7c151.jpeg) I thought it was strange, since I disabled Secure Boot, but anyways - progress! At least my box wasn't hard-bricked.. yet. I clicked the "OK" button, but the error popped up again. Clicked on OK again, and the same thing came up. Damn. Pressed OK a *third* time, and BAM, third time's the charm and now I'm in the BIOS! The version number: **1.05!** Now onto this Secure Boot thing - went thru the menus to see what's changed, and Secure Boot was now enabled, and the options to disable it was greyed out! WTF. I wasn't sure if this was a new "feature" as part of the update. I went thru all the BIOS options and couldn't find a way to enable the options. The changelog did mention that [Pluton](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security/hardware-security/pluton/microsoft-pluton-security-processor#what-is-microsoft-pluton) was now enabled, so maybe it had something to do with that. I decided to just reboot again and go back into the BIOS, and this time the Secure Boot options were changeable again! So I disabled it, managed to boot back into Arch, checked dmesg - everything's good, and we're back in business! *Fin*. If you've read thru and reached the bottom of this, thanks for tuning in. **TL;DR**: Beware of Minisforum. If you *really* want to get one, buy from Amazon or some other retailer with a reliable ordering system, decent customer support and refund policy.
