Like a lot of things it's very coruptible. I'd say the things that make it borscht are: beets, tomatoes, sour cream and the dill really is the thing (although again, if you just plain don't like dill don't force it).

Do it by the recipie(ish) once then make it your own :). Tomatoa broth isn't terribly common in recipies.

Borcht is delicious. It's beef/chicken/protein veg with beets as a kind of stew with a sort of tomato creme sauce. You typically serve it with a genous dollop of sour cream and dill. The dill is optional (I know some people hate that flavor) but in my opion is really key.

It doesn't really have a particular scent other than "stew". It's great in a slow cooker, and you can bastardize/customize it if you want (although it may not technically be Borcht at that point). If I don't have beef I'll do it with polish sausage and sometimes had boiled eggs.

10/10 don't sleep on tasty European tomato beet meat stew. Stew/soup season is coming.

Dude, they flubbed this so damn hard by over reaching. A few years ago, when they mentioned there would be a button in word that you could use to make a slide deck of your word dock, I was so excited. The teams meeting part where it will summarize meetings is honestly fantastic in doing Roberts rules of order type stuff. My response was "I hate what this means in terms of privacy, but godamn that sounds useful".

In turning into an everything all or nothing they massively screwed up. I have a self hosted instance of llama-gpt that I use to solve the "blank page" problem that AI was actually great at.

I have a lot of issues with AI on principle, like a lot of folks. But it blows my mind how hard they screwed up delivery (and I don't just mean the startups, that's to be expected). There's plenty to be said about uber at a principle level, but it's still bloody convenient. The entire roll out of a AI-ecosystem reeks of this meme: "but we made plans!".

CDPR is still on my "probably pass" list after cyber punk. I read the launch news, stayed faraway. I picked it up this year, after all the patches and work and... yeah it's still fundamentally broken.

Not in terms of balance or bugs, but it didn't have the magic. To start, I really don't like fantasy games. They're just not my thing. Witcher 3 had bad combat mechanics, could be terribly grindy and YET is one of my top five games. The story telling, from the plot itself the tiny immersive details in the world, hooked you. They nailed the big things, but it was the little things like sometimes you'd free someone, and realize they murdered a bunch of dudes who were minding their own business, and none of this was mentioned in or affected any other plot line, it was just a random detail in the universe.

Cyberpunk has a semblance of the big stuff, but exactly none of the soul. I cared about some of the main characters (emphasis on "some") but exactly none about the world. It never felt like more than a backdrop.

A loss and misstep is ok, particularly given a growing studio, the problem with CDPR is they think they fixed cyberpunk. With that mentality I'm giving their next game a huge berth.

And if you liked cyberpunk, enjoy. There are parts to be enjoyed. There are some neat plot threads, some nifty side quests, if you enjoy it don't let people ruin it for you.

The holiday special is best star wars story told. To be sure, it borrows from a lot of the character building that had already taken place, but that adds to it, not detracts. Where as the main trilogy was a scifi retelling of a classical samurai tale, the Christmas special comes with its own new ideas as to what drives the starwars universe and the plight of the everyman under the empires boot heel, a perspective we actually didnt get to see much. I think it was bold artistic direction made possible by the original trilogy's unexpected success, and we're richer as a species for the temerity of the writers. The tones got a bit more alacrity than the trilogy which catches a lot of fans off gaurd but nothing to objectively dismiss it for.

If it's determined there's liability, maybe. I don't know about jail but a victims family absolutely could sue in civil court in the US.

I don't know about specifics but there are absolutely cases and laws around determining when and if a storage company in this case should have known. Also for things like kids breaking into your derelict building and hurting themselves and a million other things.

Don't ask me to get into whether the laws around establishing liability are correct or ethical, I barley know any details in my own country let alone others (and what international treaties apply). But you asked a question and the answer is: it depends but, yes, sometimes.

Tires are well and truly goofy. Black magic engineering. The things you could do in an astrovan with the right tires VS a wrangler with the wrong tires just doesn't seem right.

Tires are just incredibly use specific, Usain Bolt would do terribly in a sprint with bowling shoes, and would hurt himself bowling in running shoes. It doesn't matter what you drive if you've got the wrong shoes for the drive.

A truly skilled driver/rider might be able to pick a good line, but most of that skill will show when they go "nah. Ain't doing it".

Signed - an ADV rider who's tires are and will forever be a compromise between dirt and tarmac performance.

The point being how damn fragile a facade is when there's nothing behind it, and how much these kind of "strong men" depend on it.

The whole "weird" thing was the perfect shot. The reason it works is because it's also true "no man, you're not to tough for me, you're just... Fucking weird..."

Also the ecology of maintaining specific populations is important, deer being the most visible example. Any state environmental authority would tell you they depend on hunters. We influence our environment, and some species are better equipped to deal with that than others. If we want to maintain a diverse ecosystem, that means controlling some population numbers as habitat shrinks.

The best solution would be to not shrink the habitat, but that's gets into a lot of human factors I'm not really equipped to talk about.

Shooting and stuffing animals was seen as "conservation" back then. It seems wild to us, but in a time before it was truly fathomable you could wipe an animal from the planet, having a stuffed specimen for study was seen as laudable.

And the more rare it was, the more information could be gained by studying it's body. Again, it seems ass backwards now, but to put it into context Mendal (the guy with the peas) lived around the same period.

But for whatever it's worth, this whole last decade has been weird. I know, personally, people who showed up with the goofy "tea party" hats that just kinda quietly bowed out, and on the other end people who became more vocal. It's just not normal. There's not a consistency between teaparty/not teaparty republicans and Trump.

I'm glad your Dad at least is in the former. I'll argue all day with those people about basic human rights, but my point is shit is fucked. The people I know, whether or not I agreed with them, that were on those statehouse steps, are not turning out to vote. Killing the GOP is in your best interest if fracturing the Democratic Party is what you want. Progressives have been ready to bail since 2016. It’s not likely to make American politics any less statist, though.

'nuff said. Right there with you. As per the rest, like I said I vote out idiots when I can, and I'm avoiding naming the state because it's the internet, but we do pretty well in terms of workers rights, civil rights, and healthcare (yes there are libertarians who support MFA etc), so I think it's important to indicate that, especially for local issues, the national issue of the party means less.

But I hear you and you do you. I'm pretty damn far from accelerationist, but if we really can't keep to clear cut things like the EC... well... we've got far bigger issues.

And I can't wait. I am firmly in support of ranked choice. I think it's absence is the root cause of a lot of issues and should be a single issue voter issue... second ONLY to the fact that there is a "candidate" in the running who is responsible for a Temu quality coup.

Again (not for you but others), I know the issues of my party. It's my party not my religion. I am uncomfortable with the compromises democrats make. The thing about coalition governments and multi-party systems is they allow compromises to happen while keeping support and acknowledging they are compromises in the name of pragmatism. It's the way it should be, it's how we get the best of all ideas.

There are things that should never be compromised. I'm a libertarian because Obama was in favor of "strong civil unions", renewed the patriot act, and kept Guantanamo open. In a coalition government, I maybe could have understood that, but that's the issue: without a coalition, and without ranked choice, those are now principles of the democratic party.

And again, it's all secondary to being able to vote at all in 2028. Harris is going to have a hell of a time, but I'm excited for it.

I'm a registered libertarian. Despite the craziness, I don't plan on changing that. I wouldn't have voted for Biden, strictly because I live in a state that has 0% chance of flipping, BUT I routinely vote for democrats in senate/house/local races where my vote actually does make a difference. I also encouraged friends with similar mindsets in battleground states to vote Biden.

I think the democratic party needs to fracture, it just needs to fracture AFTER the republican party.

All of that is a setup to say: I also am excited, and if someone like me is excited, I think that's a DAMN good sign. I cannot wait to piss and moan about a Harris admin. It is a big damn country, I look forward to disagreement returning to the point it doesn't result in erosion of fundamental rights and democracy itself, not to mention godamn violent insurrection.

Simple average color library for video? (edit: closed, problem wasn't the problem)

Hi All, I'm screening a large media library (20TB) wherein some files got corrupted when I did a transfer via filezilla (by my guess ~10%). The corrupted files display with a green "filter" over every frame (when played via plex and a number of local video players playing the file directly). I'd like to screen the library, and want to write a script to get an average color reading. Are there any libraries that would let me return a value AND specify how many frames I want it to take the average of? Because of how consistent and defined the issue is, it's really not necessary to average the whole file. It would also be great if it automatically skipped non-video files, but I imagine a simple "try/except" would be fine. My skill level here is best described as "high level hobbyist". I'm familiar with what I need to do iterating over the folder etc, but would prefer not to learn how to pull specific frames from a video container unless I have to. Thanks for any help!

How to screen a 20TB library for corrupted files?

Hi All, About a year ago I transferred all my files to a new drive. I used filzezilla which did mostly ok-ish, but I didn't notice that some of the video files were corrupted. Random files will have a green tinge to them (like someone put a green filter over the lens). It seems random, although if it's a series it's usually the whole series. I've been replacing them as they come up, but I was wondering if anyone had any bright ideas to expedite the process. Thanks for any help!

Random skipping on direct stream? Temp fix.

I was wondering if anyone bumped into this. I noticed random jumps (1-3seconds) in playback when playing original quality. Definitely not buffering or performance lag, just an actual playback error. Jump was at the same spot anytime I loaded the media and regardless of what time I loaded it to. Which is curious because on playing the file with a different media player on the box it was on, zero issue what so ever. Disabling direct stream option (under debug) resolved it, and there doesn't seem to be much of a performance hit, I'm just curious what's going on here.

Noob stumbling along. Just looking for some guidance on adding a module to initramfs.

Running Bookworm, Plasma DE if that's relevant. Background: I'm learning here. Decent amount of coding and embedded hardware experience but I'm usually missing one or two key concepts with this stuff. Getting a box running, and wrestling with NVIDIA drivers. I successfully installed the driver (I think), but now lightdm isn't working. From what I read it appears there's a common issue around a race condition where lightdm tries to fire up before the drivers ready, so I need to add the nvidia driver to initramfs. Can anyone give me some pointers? Specifically while I get the above: 1) I'm not sure what modules need to be added and if they're named something specific for debian vs other distros 2) The correct file to modify 3) The correct format/syntax that needs to be added I've found lots of examples, just none specific to debian, and screwing around at this level I don't want to bork something enough I need to do a bare install. Thanks for any help!

Not sure where to start. Playback from webclient is great but HTPC program is performs terribly. Same machine, local media.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here? I have a pretty beefy PC I use as a server and HTPC. 24 2.5ghz cores, 64gb ram, kind of a crappy video card, debian 11. I just migrated all my stuff over and stress tested it supporting 8 different transcribed streams simultaneously (mix of in/out of local). That worked great. BUT, the video playback is choppy (as in frame skipping) and out of sync when I'm running the HTPC program. Oddly using the web client on the same machine avoids that issue. Any thoughts? I'm wondering if it might be that it's an older TV it's plugged into and there's some issue there. Thing is, like I said, the webclient its *worlds* better. Webclient seems to have some issues but I'm pretty sure that's just due to the TV. Any pointers are helpful! I'm OK at this stuff but very much learning.

Blanking on a term. I remember a protocol/firmware for wireless routers where the idea was to connect as many as possible to create a quasi internet without any ISPs. Help?

Basically title. I remember reading about it back in like 2018, I even remember a company that would provide crypto based on the amount of traffic you let through. Just curious if that ever saw any growth. Everything I google keeps bringing up things on the darkweb. The goal of this was explicitly to go "ISP-less". Like they envisioned mesh net covering giant swathes of space.

    Want to be a mod?

Hi All, I mostly grabbed this as a place-holder because this is a community I'll miss from reddit. I'll post some of my bog gardens after I can give them a proper hair cut. If anyone wants to take on any mod responsibilities now or in the future just reach out. I imagine it'll be a while before there's anything really involved though. Glad to see there's already some posts :)
