Possibly yes but that doesn't help if one is morbidly afraid of approaching women for example.

However my point was that it's a bit pointless to ask why would someone become something when by definition it's involuntary. It's like asking why would anyone be under 6ft tall.

Yikes, a major war you say?

Those are not my words. Not even Elon's. Those are the words of the author of Elon's biography, Walter Isaacson. What Elon said is:

If I had agreed to their request, then SpaceX would be explicitly complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation.

The reason Ukraine can't use Starlink in Russia (or occupied territories) is because Starlink is not enabled there due to US sanctions to Russia. Enabling it would be literally illegal for him to do. He also added later that had he been contacted by US officials and told to enable it, he would have, but they didn't.

How to move blocklists from account to another?

The native lemmy feature for this doesn't work. Maybe it's because my list is thousands of users / communities long. I tried several times and only a handful of these gets moved to the other account and it actually seems that me trying to move them crashes the entire instance. Is there a lemmy app or some other alternative method to move these over?

Did Elon Musk Turn Off Starlink Access in Crimea To Disrupt Ukrainian Attack?

To clarify on the Starlink issue: the Ukrainians THOUGHT coverage was enabled all the way to Crimea, but it was not. They asked Musk to enable it for their drone sub attack on the Russian fleet. Musk did not enable it, because he thought, probably correctly, that would cause a major war.

The one I live in: Finland

The only thing I don't like is the short summer and long winter but I try and convince myself that it's the 4 distinctive seasons and the shitty winter that makes me truly appreciate summer. It's also good for the human character which probably partly explains why we've been voted the happiest country in the world who knows how many years in a row. It may be less true now but it's still in our genes; in the past you better be nice to your neighbour because once the winter comes and food runs out, your life may depend on them.

Serious. Even if people don't say it aloud, there are ones practically hoping for Tesla FSD to fail and kill someone, Neuralink recipient to die of complications or the Crew Dragon module to fail and kill the astronauts only so that they can say "I told you so" and then keep shitting on Elon. Any rational person would hope for these companies to succeed despite who the CEO is because it'll benefit all of us on the long run.

Why isn't there more incel violence?

We conclude by offering one hypothesis as to why modern day incels are not as violent as we might expect. The Male Sedation Hypothesis, that online virtual worlds, such as pornography, may pacify the potential for violence among sexless young men, providing a counterfeit sense of sexual fulfillment and reducing motivation for real- life mate competition.

So in other words; in the past such men would have taken their frustration to the streets. Gathering into groups of other such men and causing trouble, kicking grannies and such. Nowdays they instead retreat into their mom's basements smoking weed, playing video games and watching porn.

I've only been doing this for around 6 months so I haven't had any that special jobs so far but I did a small kitchen remodel to one customer where I tore down the old and build a new one for her which was quite enjoyable job.

My favourite jobs are ones that require creativity and problem solving. When ever I can fix something instead of replacing it is fun. This is a recent example of such job:

It's honestly easier to list what I don't do which is building something bigger than a shed, electric work, work inside tanks / wells, challenging tree fellings, jobs that require more than one person such as roofing, asbestos demolition and jobs where I need to deal with refrigerants.

It wouldn't really matter. If I knowingly install something "wrong" it's on me even if it's how the customer wanted it. I wouldn't agree to something like this if I was worried about it causing issues in the future. After 2 years it's no longer on my responsibility.

I don't agree with the premise. Being a shitty person doesn't mean everything they do is also shitty. Musk singlehandedly popularized electric cars, he's the first person to develop re-usable rockets thus cutting the price of transporting stuff to orbit by over a half and he's also responsible for being the first to create a truly global satellite internet effectively for the whole world. If you can't give him credit for any of that then you're simply just not looking at it objectively but rather with emotionally motivated reasoning.

It is. The problem is that vinyl carpet floor can be too soft for vinyl planks and thus in the worst case the seams might open up. Laying vinyl planks on laminate or parquet wouldn't be an issue because it's a hard surface.

It's the original vinyl flooring in this case and even though it's not generally recommended to lay "luxury vinyl planks" on top of it, it usually is not a problem and the customer didn't want me to tear out the old flooring due to how much extra work that would cause.

Got laid off from work. Started my own business and couldn't be happier https://i.imgur.com/pH2uJ2U.jpeg

I worked as a plumber for over 10 years. The company I was with got acquired by a larger one, and after a few years, they shut down the entire plumbing department, laying off around 10 workers, including me. I was faced with the choice of either finding a new job in a small(ish) town, competing with 10 other plumbers for the same position, or finally doing what I’d been thinking about for years: starting my own business. I didn’t want to focus solely on plumbing, so now I’m essentially what you’d call a handyman. I take on a variety of home improvement projects according to my skills, and I absolutely love it. Not only is there no one telling me what to do, but the variety of jobs I get to do is immense. No two days are ever the same. On top of that, I actually receive gratitude for the work I do. Practically all of my customers so far have been visibly satisfied with the quality of work and service they’ve received, which makes my job extremely fulfilling. I actually feel like a useful member of society now. To be honest, I’m quite surprised by the amount of positive feedback I’ve gotten. I’ve always known that I have extremely high standards for the quality of my work, but I never considered myself a particularly likable person. I might need to reconsider that as the evidence to the contrary keeps piling up. Of course, there are downsides. I took a significant pay cut, and the long-term success of my business remains to be seen. But so far, things look promising. I’m not looking to get rich, grow my company, or hire employees, but if I can maintain my current standard of living and never have to go back to working for someone else, I can safely say this has been one of the best decisions of my life.

I doubt it has any use in reality.

Some possible future use cases would be things like:

    • Restoring Mobility: Bypassing spinal cord damage to regain limb control.

    • Treating Neurological Disorders: Modulating brain activity for conditions like Parkinson’s or epilepsy.

    • Restoring Vision and Hearing: Bypassing damaged pathways to directly stimulate the brain.

    • Enhancing Communication: Translating thoughts into speech for those with severe impairments.

    • Prosthetic Control: Enabling natural movement with brain-controlled prosthetics.

    • Treating Mental Health: Targeting brain circuits to manage depression or PTSD.

    • Memory Restoration: Helping those with memory loss, like in Alzheimer’s.

Nope. He's doing better than ever. Some of the threads god pulled out because it turns out that brain moves inside the skull more than they anticipated but they've made up for that with optimization and system updates. The performance of the first unit is better today than it has ever been. This is coming directly from Noland himself who has been quest on several podcasts.

Well I'd say that for a person to be evil they'd need to be doing evil things with the sole intention of causing harm with nothing good coming out of it. Perhaps a good caricature of an evil person would be someone wanting to destroy the world including themselves. Admittedly such people absolutely does exists so maybe that debunks my own claim.

However if someone draws joy from causing harm to others I wouldn't still call it evil but more like extreme disregard; you don't care how others feel, only how it makes you feel. This is why I don't think billionaires abusing the system for their own benefit makes them evil because causing harm is a byproduct of their selfish goals but not the intention of them. Similarly someone like Hitler wasn't evil either because causing suffering to the jews was not the reason he set up the death camps but rather a way to achieve his other goals.

Yesterday the price of electricity in Finland was negative 1.5 cents / kWh

It's still not earning you money to spend electricity because you still have to pay the transfer fee which is around 6 cents / kWh but it's pretty damn cheap nevertheless, mostly because of the excess in wind energy. Last winter because of a mistake it dropped down to negative 50 cents / kWh for few hours, averaging negative 20 cents for the entire day. People were literally earning money by spending electricity. Some were running electric heaters outside in the middle of the winter.

    Help me understand littering

I consider myself to be the kind of person who can quite easily imagine myself in someone else's place. I don't know if I'm actually any better at it than the average person, but judging by the comment sections on social media and the conversations I've had with other people, I really struggle to get angry at strangers like many others do, even for things that anger is an appropriate reaction to. This doesn't necessarily mean that I don't condemn their behavior, but that it doesn't provoke a particularly negative emotional reaction from me. I observe the world from a distance, and when I see someone acting differently, I generally can come up with a charitable story about why they act that way. While it doesn't usually justify the behavior, it at least helps me imagine why they're like that and reminds me that if I were in their shoes, I'd likely do the same thing. This applies to cheating, violence, racism... Name a bad behavior, and I can come up with a story about what a person might be telling themselves to justify it. However, littering is something I simply cannot comprehend. I cannot wrap my mind around what a person is thinking when they're throwing trash on the ground for someone else to pick up. If it's something "minor" like a cigarette butt, then okay, I can somewhat understand, but tossing your McDonald's takeout bag onto the side of the road is completely psychopathic behavior to me. I don't think even the worst people in the world think of themselves as "bad" because they rationalize their behavior somehow. But if you throw trash into nature, you must know you're being a massive jerk. Tl;dr: I want to hear the best justification for littering.

I couldn't find almost any tutorials on how to disassemble or service this particular eBike motor (Bafang M400), so I just started removing screws and pulling out parts while taking a ton of pictures. I found two dirty, rusty bearings that I cleaned and re-greased, along with all the gears, and then put it back together. Not only did I manage to avoid breaking it, but the noise seems to be gone as well. This was by far the most intimidating bike repair I've done so far. I've serviced every other part before, but I hadn't dared to touch the motor until now. It also turns out that the motor is much better sealed than I expected, so I'll happily continue doing deep river crossings with the motor half submerged in the future, just as I have done until now.

Of course, I'd do all the obvious things, such as getting a bigger house, a newer car, and quitting work, but beyond that, I have no interest in an extravagant lifestyle—or at least that's what I tell myself. By a bigger house, I mean one typical of upper-middle-class living. I've watched plenty of videos of people touring million-dollar mansions, and they all look too big, open, and sterile to me. I've seen cozier tiny homes than those. And by a newer car, I mean a 2017 model or so instead of the 2007 one I drive now. Really, give me a nice cottage by the lake with some land and a big garage for all my tools and toys, and I'm all set. I much prefer the idea of "hidden wealth" over showing it off. I'm just kind of worried that I wouldn't be able to live up to my own expectations if push comes to shove, and there's really no way of testing that. Am I just kidding myself here? I feel the same way about fame. Many people aspire to become successful YouTubers or such, but the idea of people recognizing me on the street sounds awful.

Private charter yacht cruises would be one of the few truly expensive hobbies I'd like to have if I were that wealthy.

Whenever I think about the things I'd do if money truly weren't a limiting factor, I honestly can't think of more than a handful of really expensive things I'd like to have or do. However, the idea of a private cruise on a luxury yacht seems pretty intriguing. It's not so much about owning one but just going on a cruise every now and then. I watched a video on YouTube where a yacht's chef mentioned that the guests can ask for basically any food or drink, and they'll be able to make it for them. I must admit, that sounds pretty sweet.

Would you consume your own content?

..and do you think that you posting it has a positive, neutral or negative effect on the world? By content I mean what ever you're posting online. The pictures you post on Instagram/Pixelfed or messages you're writing on Lemmy, YouTube comment section, Facebook and so on. If you look back at what you have posted in the past year for example, do you consider it to be the kind of content that you would gladly consume if it was coming from someone else? If not, then why are you posting it in the first place?

    Help with removing freehub https://i.imgur.com/i0U0civ.jpeg

Long story short: completely stripper the hex slot on the back of the freehub body while trying to remove it. It’s incredibly tight. Can I just take a pipe wrench to it from the front or do the teeth seen here on the new part lock with the wheel hub making it impossible to turn?

Some days it'll be like that https://i.imgur.com/p39ZQxH.jpeg

Blew my freehub muscling up a steep incline. This is why I ride with half of my workshop in my backpack. Had zip ties packed up specifically incase of this happening. I once [snapped a chain](https://i.imgur.com/Y8LOsXr.jpeg) and had to walk my bike back home. I never wanted to do that again so I've been pretty much prepaired for anything ever since. Usually it's just [flat tire](https://i.imgur.com/A5JLzct.jpeg) I've had to deal with. Had to fix the chain another time too but had a [chain tool and a masterlink](https://i.imgur.com/m6sg0ga.jpeg) that time. So far the greatest breakdown has been when I snapped my derailleur hanger and had to shorten the chain and convert it into [single speed](https://i.imgur.com/SIa0GqG.jpeg) to ride home. The freehub had been experiencing skipping for some time now so I can't say I was too surprised when this happened.

What type of fence would you think is the most feasible and secure for your base? https://i.imgur.com/E7q6yo0.jpeg

Ofcourse a 5 meter tall concrete wall would be ideal but good luck building that in the middle of the apocalypse. What do you feel like would be the next best option? My personal choice currently would be to find rolls of 2 meters tall steel wire fence, locate a secluded hilltop somewhere in the woods near water and pull the fence tight between living trees and finish it with barbed wire on the top, mostly in case of other survivors trying to sneak in. I'd start by securing a small, maybe 5m x 5m perimeter as the starting point. This can be accomplished in a day and I now have a safe place to sleep in. When I obtain more fencing I would start building a second layer around the first one with about 3 meters of space in between and as my camp grows and I get more supplies I would just keep building additional layers. If there are longer stretches of fence between trees I would add additional posts as well as 45 degree supports to prevent a horde from pushing it over. Wire fence like this comes with atleast 2 additional benefits of being able to see thru it as well as enabling you to kill zombies thru it with a spear.

Don't you all get tired of the constant negativity?

Despite not subscribing to political communities and having a large number of content filters based on keywords, my feed here is still for a large part all negative articles and ragebait. Elon Musk this and Israel that. Microsoft ruining windows, AI ruining internet, right wingers and capitalism ruining the world, police being racist and shooting innocent people, companies demanding workers into offices, privacy being under constant attack from all sides.. And all this despite the effort I go thru to block that from my view. I can only imagine what the unfiltered feed is like. I get that this is all important stuff but holy shit it's depressing when that's all I read here every day. Sure, some of it is legitimately news worthy but lets be real here; much of it isn't. It's just to get you riled up and engaging with the post. It's the exact same thing all major social media recommendation algorithms are doing; feeding you content that causes outrage to keep you on the platform for as long as possible. Do we *really* need to know about every stupid thing Elon says or every police shooting where the victim is black? It's no wonder so many people, especially younger ones feel absolutely miserable from day to day. It can't be healthy to live like this. I feel like this kind of media diet is pretty much equivalent to eating fast food every single day.

If you can't make a single sincere counter-argument to your own belief, your stance is driven by emotion rather than logic

Rational beliefs should be able to withstand scrutiny and opposing arguments. The inability to do so indicates that the belief is more about personal bias and emotional investment rather than objective analysis.

Tesla will likely be the market leader in self-driving technology and it's a good thing

Soon it will be undeniable that FSD is the most advanced and safest self-driving system on the planet and the haters just need to accept it. It's a good thing because it's literally saving human lives. You might not like Teslas as a vehicle nor the company itself due to the CEO but the fact is that no other manufacturer offers equally capable self-driving system and this is unlikely to change anytime soon. If you've not been following this technology closely they just switched from human code to 100% neural nets and the difference between V11 and V12 [cannot be overstated](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWt2IPWwSww&). It's still not perfect and probably never will be but it's *really* good and there's a good chance it's already safer driver than the average human. This is all done using only cameras. No radar, no LiDAR. There's also rumors going around that Ford is about to licence the FSD software in their own vehicles and others are likely to follow so it will not be just Tesla's that are using it.

Is there a more politically and ideologically diverse alternative for Lemmy?

I know the real answer is reddit but I really don't want to go back now that I've already grown used to life without it. I was hoping for Lemmy to be a viable substitute but it isn't. I can see how this place is wonderful for the certain type of person but that person is not me. My experience during the past 6+ months has been a net negative and I'm pretty much ready to move on. I just don't know where else to go.

I fixed my dad's angle grinder with a ball bearing I salvaged from my gerbil's old excercise wheel a few years back.

It was even the same brand. I love when hoarding materials pays back.

I needed a miter saw stand but went with the Keter folding workbench instead because of its versatility https://i.imgur.com/jvjeQrI.jpeg

Along with the two roller stands the total price was what a dedicated saw stand would've costs and I would've needed to buy the rollers anyway. Pretty impressed with how solid that table is and takes literally 15 seconds to set up. It's supposed to withstand 1000lbs.

Vaasa police foil student's school shooting plan (Finland) yle.fi

    >"The woman who made the video was taken into custody about an hour later. The detention was made without drama. I can't go into details, but it happened in Vaasa," Luoto told Svenska Yle. >He added that there was a very real risk the suspect would have committed the act on the same day she was taken into custody.

How do I transfer the list of blocked users and communities onto another account?

I used to be able to do this with LASIM but it seems to be outdated and no longer works. Importing the settings from my profile doesn't include blocks.
