I think my blocklist is about 1/3 spam, 1/3 hatespeach, blatent disinformation and promoting genocide, and 1/3 untagged nsfw. Its a couple dozen users right now.

On my old account it was hundreds (almost all hate-speech, disinformation, and promoting genocide), but Hexbear has been defederated and I've givien up and blocked .ml so I don't run into much of that anymore.

This same cat also breifly learned to turn off the internet and force us out when we were being too boring (such as when trying to fall asleep). We started locking him in a room overnight for a little while, and he seemed to forget how after that, luckily.

Depends on the context, and how serious and violent the Nazi. If they're just an isolated idiot who isn't politically active and isn't stupid or thick-headed enough to actually follow through on their claimed beliefs, then violence isn't really justified. They're an idiot, but not a threat. The problem is with anymore more dedicated or crazy than that. Past that point, you immediately get to people who want to murder or enslave hundreds of millions. Thats not hyperbolic, that's literally the goal of Nazi beliefs, and a logical extention of almost every belief that stems out of it or is adjacent to it. In theory, yes, it'd be nice to be able to talk down people like this, or use existing systems of power to force them to places where there isn't a risk of them trying to murder or enslave people, but unfortunately, when you're talking about groups who don't respect human lives, the law, or anyone but their designated, arbitrary in-group, then those aren't always viable means. This is esspecially true if that person is already in a potition of power. Basically, if someone wants to kill you, you can't always wait for them to successfully aquire the means to do so before acting. This isn't hyperbole or metaphor, this is literally what we're talking about here. The problem is in drawing a line of who is an actual threat, and if there are other means to "disarm" them.

I mean, he's not asking for help rooting directly, or for people to feed him instructions on every one of these devices. His question is intentionally left open for any pointers people can give, from a "I rooted the Samsung and its pretty easy to do", to links to other webpages (which are exactly the sort of resource someone would have bookmarked while also being a nightmare to find on Google), to -yes- full step by step instructions for those willing to provide. He's asking for direction, not demanding someone do the work for him.

I think its just down to the lack of users, and esspecially lack of creators. There just isn't many people who care enough about a subject to write multiple paragraphs on it, nonetheless to an audience of half-a-dozen users, who likely also have an extreme aversion to monitization of said content given Lemmy's culture. For most users, there isn't even karma to act as an incentive to post.

I personally found the Inscryption scratched the same itch, albient in a different way. Its a very different game, being a sort-of narrative driven, Slay the Spire inspired card game. I won't go into too much detail, given that spoilers, mechanical or narrative, take away a lot from the game, but I found that Inscryption did a great job of juggling a bunch of different mechanics to ensure I constantly had new tools to master, while also encouraging more lateral exploration through its plethora of secrets, and drip feeding story fragments to be peiced together as I progressed.

Thats what happens when you have algorithms promote content based on click-through rate and engagement metrics. Creators have to use click-bait and sensationalism to get their content to spread. Its common knowledge at this point. I can't think of any sizable creators that don't use this, and generally the more they abuse it, the larger the channel.

As a viewer or as a player? As a player, I'd be interested interested in joining for Dota, and maybe CS2. As a viewer, Dota, CS2, or maybe some of the classics that are easier to understand on a surface level like Age of Empires or Smash Melee. That said, it'd obviously depend on specifics; as much as I love any excuse to play more Dota, for example, I only have one consistent teammate and tend to rely on randoms for other lanes.

AI can only really complete tasks that are both simple and routine. I'd compare the output skill to that of a late-first-year University student, but with the added risk of halucination. Anything too unique or too compex tends to result in significant mistakes.

In terms of replacing programmers, I'd put it more in the ballpark of predictive text and/or autocorrect for a writer. It can help speed up the process a little bit, and point out simple mistakes but if you want to make a career out of it, you'll need to actually learn the skill.

Yeah, its not terrible looking, but even ignoring the fact that its spreading into the lawn, I am hoping to plant more productive plants, and the ground-cover is so thick its hard to cut through to get to the ground, nonetheless letting my plants grow through it.

It also doesn't help that I now know its considered an invasive species in my region (along with 99% of the other stuff that was in the garden when I moved in) so probably a good idea to get rid of it for that reason too.

Considering that its already been effectively announced unofficially, and whats been leaked is in a very unfinished state, I expect they'll wait until its more polished before putting any real marketing weight behind it. What is this plant?

It grows into vines a few feet long, not very tangly, that run along the ground and don't seem to climb. It seems to grow in large numbers of smaller vines that don't *seem* to be connected in the roots. Its completely blanketing my garden, choking out even other weeds, trying to expand into my lawn, and growing almost as fast as I weed it. I'm wondering what it is, and/or if there are any particularly good ways of dealing with it. I've been tilling the ground, flipping over the soil (down to roughly a foot) and putting a layer of mulch over it, but Im still having stuff grow back. Edit: solved: its periwinkle.

At least personally, its a lot of the shorter, gameplay-focused games that always leave me wanting more, or wanting to further improve, without having some unbeatable new-game++++++++ mode or anything overly RNG based.

A couple games I've 100%ed that still have significant bonus/optional content outside the main plotline include:

    • Inscription - Willingly played through the story twice and spent nearly as many hours on the bonus new-game+ mode. Super solid gameplay, that while well explored in the base game, leaves plenty of room to further experiment and perfect your strategy.

    • Just Cause 3 - while there is a ton of bonus content, its not overly hidden, and the core gameplay is solid enough that challenges feel fun and rewarding, while travelling around gathering collectables is satisfying in a chill, podcast-listening, but not unengaging way.

    • Hotline Miami - after completing the game, I wanted to go back and get a A+ on every level because the gameplay was fun and I felt I still had more room to grow. "The puzzle" wasn't as fun, and I did use a guide, but I was just happy for any reason to play through the game again.

    • Wolfenstein the New Order - again, just a solid gameplay loop that made me want to keep playing, with bonus objectives that worked as an objective rather than a chore. Also, unlike later ID shooters, it doesn't have the "beat the whole game without dying" achievement, which just feels too punishing over mistakes that may be minor or downright unfair.

The problem is that you then end up with sites based on attention, leading you into the (imo even bigger) pitfall of every other social media site, where things like attention-grabbing, clickbait, and sensationalist content has a massive advantage. Look at what gets sorted to the top on platforms where that is the main metric, things like Mr. Beast's low-brow, cacophonus videos, children's content, scantily clad women and softcore porn, and gambling or otherwise particularly addictive content. Even focusing on comment count alone means a focus on topics that are both broad-appeal and controversial, more like what you get out of Twitter's trending topics: mostly politics and flamewars rather than experts sharing their research, or artists sharing their (non-pornographic) art.

Don't get me wrong, voting isn't a perfect system at all, but it correlates with quality far better than engagement does.

The problem isn't even that we can't buy in any store we want. Thats normal. The problem is that they're paying to prevent it from being added to other stores, because they know other stores would out-compete them. Imagine how absurd and anti-consumer it would be if Pizza Pizza could pay a peperoni producer to not sell to other pizza chains, for example.

That said, Epic did effectively fund the game from scratch, which makes this more grey area in terms of overall results, but considering Epic's history, I can see easily why people are viewing this pessimistically.

Its stupid that they're able to effectively pay the developer to not work with their competition, but thats relatively minor seeing as the developer is still independent and still able to self-publish. I get why people are mad about it though, seeing as it is still kinda anticompetitive and Epic has a long track record of doing much worse.

    A) flashy, loud, snippy content that works on people with no attention span or who are easily amused like kids (and annoys everyone else)

And B) clickbait-type, over-the-top content and games that no one else does - the sorts of things that, even if not high-brow, are still interesting. For example, blowing up a Lambrogini appealing to the action-movie lizard-brain, or a giant game of hide and seek appealing to the sort of person who daydreams about how to survive a zombie apocalypse.

Basically, its the peak of broad-appeal, low-brow, high effort/production value media.

How would I troubleshoot an AC unit that isn't working well.

I'm in a rental right now with a useless landlord, so I'm trying to fix the problem myself (or at least find the cause). My home's central air AC unit is working, but doesn't seem to be working well. There is cool air coming from the vents, but its less than I would expect, and when its 80f/27c outside, its rarely more than a single degree cooler. I'm looking for ideas to track down the problem. In particular, between the landlord's neglect and the last tenant's seemingly willful destruction I expect it'll be something maintenance related. So far I have checked: * The unit size relative to the property (its about 2.5 tons for a 2,500 ft² property) which the internet seemed to say was fine. That said, its a bungalow with no attic and high-cielings, so Im not sure if that could have enough effect to account for this. * Intakes and outlets inside the out aren't blocked by furnature (although what I can see looking into them looks pretty dirty) * I tried removing the furnace filter (which, from my understanding, is also used by the AC inside the house) temporarily, although didn't notice a significant difference. * I checked the cooling fins on the unit outside the house for obstructions, but there was little more than a bit of webs I'm not an expert on these things at all, but is there anything else I can check or try? Edit: unfortunately there is some condensation and frost on the coil box, so sounds like its a leak. Guess I'm looking at a fight with my landlord.

Edit: Came back after watching it. Its depressing, but nowhere near as bad as people made it sound. No main character deaths, main characters do stupid stuff but are generally good people, and while things are grim and dark, there is hope for progress despite everything.

What is a niche interest or hobby you'd personally like to see represented more on Lemmy

For example, I used to follow a lot of subreddits for individual YouTube content creators, however, Lemmy doesn't really have the size or culture to support this currently.

Are there any notable content creators that focus on content other than niche tech and US political on Mastodon?

I'm hoping to find more general, less nerdy content or infuriating American news. 99% of what I see and is recommended to me is just that. I know Technology Connections has an account. I'm thinking people roughly along those lines in terms of popularity/scale but I'm open to any topic from gardening to gaming.
