#FantasticGeocachingToolsAndWhereToFindThem

Just saw this post via the cross-stitching community, and thought it'd fit perfect here too! Anyone use such a device to find magnetic nanos? Or is there a different tool of the trade you never go without? [https://mastodon.social/@Stitch26/113150645821886853](https://mastodon.social/@Stitch26/113150645821886853) "Mechanics normally use a #Mechanics Telescoping Magnetic Pick-Up Tool 2 pick up small bolts & other metal that have fallen as they work, but those who #CrossStitch, #Sew, #Quilt, etc., can use it to pick up lost pins & needles so they don't wind up goosing someone when they sit on the couch. 😅 Can be found in almost any automotive store or automotive tool section in Walmart. Some versions even have flashlights on the end!"

I was running my fingers along this metal ledge trying to find a magnetic nano cache. Came across something quite different instead - yikes! Luckily I wasn't stung, but got out of there in a hurry and left that one unfound

"You have most certainly passed a geocache without knowing it. [...] This right-under-your-nose scavenger hunt reminds us that there is still much to discover in the world, and the community of people in Door County who enjoy the activity is alive and well. I have always been drawn to geocaching and the everyday ingenuity it can inspire. People get absurdly creative with how and where they hide their containers; one cache in my hometown is hidden inside a fake sprinkler head."

I did a mixture of these 3 recipes,

I'll try to do a write-up, but was mostly flying by the seat of my pants...

5 large (about the size of my hand) pieces of ginger 2 lemons 1/2 navel orange 2.5 cups sugar 1 packet gelatin Cloves, star anise, turmeric

Cut ginger into slices and simmer for 30 minutes. Drain, but save the cooking water as ginger tea, with a bit of sugar added. The last 10 minutes, I added some cloves and star anise to the simmering pot, but the flavour wasn't really noticeable in the final product, so may want to try adding them sooner. Then puree the boiled ginger in a blender - could probably skip this step if chopped small enough, but I don't really like chewy pieces in my jam

Cut 1/4" off the ends of the lemons, then quarter them, and slice as thinly as possible, removing seeds as you go (I used the lemons whole, pith and all, surprisingly it wasn't too bitter at all).

Peel 1/2 orange with a peeler and cut the peel into small pieces. Remove the pith, quarter and slice the orange thinly (I didn't use the pith this time because it is so much thicker)

Simmer the lemons, orange, ginger, sugar and a pinch of turmeric for 45 minutes. I started with 2 cups of sugar and 30 minutes cooking time, but it just wasn't thickening up, so I added another 1/2 cup of sugar, gelatin, and cooked for another 15 mins and it turned out nice and thick.

    Made 3.5 jars total

    Good luck!

Has anyone else tried out the new GeoGuessr / Geocaching partner game?

If anyone wants to play: [https://www.geoguessr.com/geocaching ](https://www.geoguessr.com/geocaching ) It's pretty cool to get to play GeoGuessr again! I missed it a lot when they switched it to being pay-to-play only. In this new version, it looks like they've added a timer, though, which I think makes it pretty stressful. I don't really see the specific connection to Geocaching though ("There's a geocache hidden near that location"? That could probably be said of almost anywhere in North America and Europe). Getting to a Geocaching souvenir is a nice perk, although you don't seem to even need a GC account to play it. Has anyone else tried the game? Thoughts?

How did Geocaching get started? - Geocaching History 101

On May 2, 2000, at approximately midnight, eastern savings time, the great blue switch controlling selective availability was pressed. Twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade. The announcement a day before came as a welcome surprise to everyone who worked with GPS technology. The government had planned to remove selective availability - but had until 2006 to do so. Now, said the White House, anyone could "precisely pinpoint their location or the location of items (such as game) left behind for later recovery." How right they were. London, Paris, New York, Beavercreek? For GPS enthusiasts, this was definitely a cause for celebration. Internet newsgroups suddenly teemed with ideas about how the technology could be used. On May 3, one such enthusiast, Dave Ulmer, a computer consultant, wanted to test the accuracy by hiding a navigational target in the woods. He called the idea the "Great American GPS Stash Hunt" and posted it in an internet GPS users' group. The idea was simple: Hide a container out in the woods and note the coordinates with a GPS unit. The finder would then have to locate the container with only the use of his or her GPS receiver. The rules for the finder were simple: "Take some stuff, leave some stuff." On May 3rd he placed his own container, a black bucket, in the woods near Beavercreek, Oregon, near Portland. Along with a logbook and pencil, he left various prize items including videos, books, software, and a slingshot. He shared the waypoint of his "stash" with the online community on sci.geo.satellite-nav: N 45° 17.460 W 122° 24.800 Within three days, two different readers read about his stash on the Internet, used their own GPS receivers to find the container, and shared their experiences online. Throughout the next week, others excited by the prospect of hiding and finding stashes began hiding their own containers and posting coordinates. Like many new and innovative ideas on the Internet, the concept spread quickly - but this one required leaving your computer to participate. Within the first month, Mike Teague, the first person to find Ulmer's stash, began gathering the online posts of coordinates around the world and documenting them on his personal home page. The "GPS Stash Hunt" mailing list was created to discuss the emerging activity. Names were even tossed about to replace the name "stash" due to the negative connotations of that name. One such name was "geocaching." Source: [https://www.geocaching.com/about/history.aspx](https://www.geocaching.com/about/history.aspx)

Bomb mock-up discovered to be a Geocache by German police www-mdr-de.translate.goog

After a possible discovery of explosives in Magdeburg, the police have given the all-clear. As the local police informed MDR, the alleged explosive device poses no danger. According to the police, there will be no further investigations or criminal charges. According to MDR information, the dummy explosive was a geocache. According to police information, tradespeople discovered a suspicious object in the empty prefabricated building of the former SED party school. It was a type of ammunition box that apparently contained two gas containers and various wires. The geocache must have been lying dormant in the underworld for many years. The last entry is from 2013. After the discovery, the area around the former SED party school was closed for several hours. The blocking radius was around 200 meters. ![](https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/e77ea082-a561-456b-b927-0da0370506c9.webp)

If I happen to have a spare container with me, usually I'll replace a damaged one. IMO if you found the original and know where it was, that's not the same as putting out a random throwdown for a missing cache.

If it's a specially made container, I'd probably just log Needs Maintenance, but if you're just replacing a pill bottle with something similar I would think it's fair game. In any case definitely mention it in your log

Even if you don't pay have the subscription, you can look premium caches up on the website using a direct link, e.g. coord.info/GC7B6F0. You need to have the geocode ("GC7B6F0") for that, though. Not sure about logging, but I think you should even be able to do that.

Personally, I've paid for it the last few years. But Geocaching is my main hobby, so it's easily a worthwhile investment.

I get being against subscriptions out of principle though. I cached for years without paying for it. In my area only about 1/3 of caches are premium only, but that might be completely different in another part of the world

Yeah, it's a shame when a container is abandoned and essentially becomes trash -- in my experience, it's rare for that to happen, though.

On the other hand, there's 'Cache In Trash Out' events (CITOs): Geocaching events where people gather to pick up litter, remove invasive species, plant trees, or otherwise help the environment. They're pretty popluar in my local area. So I wouldn't say geocaching has a net negative impact as far as littering goes!

Geocaching.com would be the site everyone uses, it's free to make an account. Their FAQ is a good place to start as well.

For apps, there is c:geo for Android, Cachly for iOS, or the official Geocaching app for both. I might see about adding more of a wiki or sidebar to this community...

That's a great point! Here in Canada I'm already nearing the end of my caching season. Maybe we'll hear some stories from Texas soon!

Unfortunately I don't have anywhere near the time, or content ideas, for that to be sustainable. I'll keep the posting times in mind though, that's a good idea!

Not stupid at all! This is a log sheet from a geocache.

Geocaching is a worldwide scavenger hunt game. People hide containers -- think tupperwares, or smaller -- anywhere outdoors, then pin the location on an online map, and anyone can go out and find them. Every geocache contains a log book or sheet where you can sign your name once you find it. This particular log sheet if from a brand new geocache, showing my own signature as the first person to find it -- often a sought-after achievement that comes with bragging rights in the community

Geocaching! Yes, it's a very niche hobby that I'm obsessed with, but I really miss the discussions in that subreddit...

!geocaching@lemmy.world is still mostly me shouting into the void, although it's been getting better lately. It'd be awesome to hear other people's stories, if they're out there!

I am trying hard to get !geocaching@lemmy.world going, although I'm not a mod myself. Subscriber numbers are growing, but it's still rare that someone else posts. I just try to keep plugging away at a sustainable pace. Luckily I have a repository of pictures and stories to share, which dates back several years

It's not sticky at all, the best comparison I can think of is dried Elmer's glue. Feels like a smooth plastic coating, stiff when it's in a thick layer, but pretty flexible when applied thinly

I can do my best, although it might be a bit difficult to reconstruct! I made up the pumpkin-apple mix a few weeks ago, actually, and had it sitting in my freezer until I finally got around to finishing this.

    • 16oz can pumpkin puree • 1-2 apples (chopped small, then pureed) • 2 tbsp peanut butter (heated up before adding to the above) -- I thought about adding more, but found this amount surprisingly noticeable already • store-bought pre-mixed pumpkin pie spice: contains cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice and cloves

Slightly NSFW, but here is a non-exhaustive list of things I have found in geocaches

    • A bong
    • A condom (unused, thank god)
    • several types of food
    • actual cash (okay, about $2)
    • packaging for a sex toy
    • cigarrette rolling papers

Got to keep my fingers crossed, judging by this list I'm sure gold coins will be next! Hmm, maybe I should start a second thread on worst geocache finds. Luckily these are less than a dozen I can think of out of several thousand finds
