World obliterating war between Goog and Macgoog coming soon
To be fought with bazinga magic eraser technology

Yeah. Not a huge fan of the goog especially lately for obvious reasons but at least you're somewhat limiting the number of western companies spying on you to the one, and they do offer good hardware for the price... Might go that way again too if I can't be convinced the potential issues are worth it idk
At least they aren't apple

Thinking of going to Xiaomi as my ancient Pixel phone is starting to crap out. Seen some horror stories about updates not working or messing up devices on though, anyone have good long-term use experiences with them? Would rather not mess with custom roms because I need to use mobile banking apps that tend not to play nice with them.

Slugs are neat there are many active slugs in my area this time of year and they are cool to look at. I saw one carefully navigate its eye around a blade of grass the other day without touching it. Crazy sophisticated behavior for something that doesn't technically (Edit: according to some stuff I've read but see below) have a brain.
Edit: I went and did some googling and I'm seeing papers speaking of slugs' brains so I guess this definition has changed and improved.
Edit 2: It's possible the usage is inconsistent as there are (some) papers going back a long way describing the cerebral, pleural, and pedal ganglia of the slug as a brain.
GIS is very cool and sometimes helpful for getting job type things congrats!

Live in Germany but originally come from the Failed States of America. I normally shower twice daily, unless I'm staying in the apartment all day and not going anywhere then I can do once. Do not have a bath tub, probably wouldn't use it much if at all if I had one

Also critical support to the EU for ruining their dumb proprietary plug party that shit was hilarious. Hope they do every single other overpriced, proprietary, and deliberately unfixable piece of garbage component Apple makes next
I was talking about how awful Apple was with a friend the other day and started screaming about how much I fucking hate Apple (I guess there are iPhone owners who refuse to date Android owners? I guess they enjoy signaling that they are rich enough to not know anything about technology and have spent their lives treated like babies like the imperial Chinese nobles did with giant fingernails showing they never work? Man I hate apple) and my wife was like they are giving me an apple for my next work computer and I was like

Idk if I'm a great example of anything but having done this on some level at least a couple times (two bachelor's degrees in three majors, master's, and ongoing PhD that I started in mid 30s), on one hand it's doable and go for it, on the other hand no one is going to pay you to do the most creative things you really want to do and your ambitions for that might end up flattened in any case. But also my humanities background was towards the beginning not the end and the rest has been at least partly (not completely) a fruitless struggle to not be poor (still poor but the scientific things I study do interest me on a good day, or so I like to tell myself).
If what you're doing now leaves the time and energy to do the thing you want on the side, maybe that is a good idea.
If not, or if the thing you want is the knowledge and/or degree itself, uh go for it but also don't be surprised when no matter how much you do everything "right" according to whatever framing you like, you still can't win? Ah that sounds terrible. Go for it! Yes

As long as it's not utter dreck like say recent Marvel movies (in which case I feel more disgusted than guilty for any kind of enjoyment), not really. 40k to me is especially redeemable because it's not trying to depict anything good. But some 40k fans don't seem to understand this and are capable of the most deranged imaginable takes on what it's about, this for sure is true.

People should be allowed to have problematic faves. Here's an unpopular opinion for you, maybe not as highbrow as Nietzsche: Rudyard Kipling was a brilliant poet. And George Orwell's take on him was absolute Reddit level jackassery full of deliberate misreading.
Pretty sure would agree. Maybe also

Yes, especially historically there was a strong overlap between knowledge workers and the PB class. Still true to some extent today. But the point is that PB and knowledge workers or the "intellectual class" are not categorically the same.
PeoplesRepublicOfNewEngland 1 year ago • 100%
I will offer a stab at it but others might disagree: I think at least historically, workers in privileged positions like this were at least in principle able to become exploiters if they wanted to with the resources available to them. Furthermore as you point out some people in this category can have ambitions of becoming exploiters. For this reason Stalin for example recognized an intellectual class that was neither exactly proletariat nor bourgeoisie, important for bringing into the revolutionary fold but also not always trustworthy. This class, iirc in Stalin's estimation, was not large enough to become revolutionary on its own.
It's important however to remember Marx's comment about transformation in the process of production pitching increasing numbers of people into the proletariat. With increasingly tenuous and badly paid work in teaching and academic professions in the west in the 21st century, it's arguable that Stalin's analysis of intellectuals no longer applies to present conditions, at least not as much as in his time, and congrats we're exploited workers too (I'm an out of contract PhD student, hi, my life is a nightmare).
For anti-genital mutilation posting in the megathread earlier I remain very much not sorry. But also! I wish to extend shanah tovah to all, even the haters and losers, on this special date, the September 11th of peaceful universal non-existence. Jewish identity can be a bit of a fuck, especially when it's ambiguous (half on the wrong side but still an important part of who you are) and you are living in a country (the Deutsch land) where there was a genocide and can be a bit difficult to talk about a complicated relationship with Judaism to most people. I don't expect them to be antisemitic or racist. Just having a lot of weird uncomfortable feelings. Telling people they shouldn't feel awkward, none of their ancestors killed mine, and the only people here who might have ancestors who did came here recently from what is now hero nation Ukraine seems not to help much for some reason. But also a real Jewish bakery opened near me and that's neat and now I've got round challah and honey cake. Took off early from my usual PhD nightmare times and now making some nice traditional food and about to drink too much wine pointedly sourced from a post-apartheid country while my body is threatening to come down with a cold. The boss of the universe certainly will not punish me for this

Egh, sort of. Better to be on the ballot really. PSL was able to get on the ballot last time when the other Brandon was in office so probably should make it this time again.
PeoplesRepublicOfNewEngland 1 year ago • 100%
I wrote in Hawkins last time though was positively impressed by PSL getting on the ballot in the state I vote in (RI), more than the green party was able to do. I was torn at the time but thought Green was still the closet thing to a viable left lane and despite some disagreements with Hawkins at least he said he was a socialist.
Given what I've learned about West I really hope you get on the ballot this time. At time of writing my plan is to vote PSL.

I grew up partly in a religion that demands it so it was done to me and have never ever been ok with it. Never been ok with wondering and never knowing what it might be like to have a complete human body. This has been a relationship ending sticking point for me on one or two occasions. Possibly my biggest regret associated with probably not having kids at this point is the fact I will not be able to end this particular fucked up cycle of sexual violence and trauma for another generation.
