Kind of like asking "are we are living in a simulation", but not wanting to know the answer. Even if you really strongly believe its true.

The difference between this AI app and Twitter being, you know its a simulation.

Does that make it any less real though would be the question, once you knew?

When I go for a bike ride with my SO we always ride side by side on streets that have a posted limit at or below 40kmh.

We usually only ride side by side on residential streets. Occasionally we get someone driving too close to us when passing or shouting out their windows saying single file in the same way.

Its like going for a walk, we would not walk in a single file, neither would we sit in a car in single file.

Its creepy as hell when you are having a conversation with your SO in the car about [insert random products here], and then in about a hour when you open your phones or laptops at home you are bombarded with ads for said product's.

This happeneds all the time. Try talking about getting a new top load washing machine and mention it three times within ten minutes. Or try talking about getting a new lawnmower, but the trick is to say it three times within ten minutes or so.

Comes down to personal preferences really. Personally I have been running truenas since the freebsd days and its always been on bare metal. There would be no reason you could not virtualize it, and I have seen it done.

I do run a pfsense virtualized on my proxmox VM machine. It runs great once I figured out all the hardware pass through settings. I do the same with GPU pass through for a retro gaming machine on the same proxmox machine.

The only thing I dont like is that when you reboot your proxmox machine the PCI devices dont retain their mapping ids. So a PCI NIC card I have in the machine causes the pfsense machine not to start.

The one thing to take into account with Unraid vs TrueNAS is the difference between how they do RAID. Unraid always drives of different sizes in its setup, but it does not provide the same redundancy as TrueNAS. Truenas requires disk be the same size inside a vdev, but you can have multiple vdevs in one large pool. One vdev can be 5 drives of 10tb and the other vdev can be 5 drives of 2tb. You can always swap any drive in truenas with a larger drive, but it will only be as big as the smallest disk in the vdev.

The hardware is by all means not top of the line, but you dont need much for a NAS.

I personally run truenas on a standalone system to act as my NAS network wide. It never goes offline and is up near 24/7 except when I need to pull a dead drive.

Unraid is my go to right now for self hosting as its learning curve for docker containers is fairly easy. I find I reboot the system from time to time so its not something I use for a daily NAS solution.

Proxmox I run as well on a standalone system. This is my go to for VM instances. Really easy to spin up any OS I would need for any purpose. I run things like home assistant for example on this machine. And its uptime is 24/7.

Each operating system has its advantages, and all three could potentially do the same things. Though I do find a containered approche prevents long periods of downtime if one system goes offline.

Websites survive by generating traffic, links to these site help increase traffic, the increase in traffic means higher ad revenues. News agencies wanting to double dip is only hurting theselves.

They actually go alot further in making the scam seem legit. They setup full trading platform apps that look legit. These apps are listed in the apple store and play store, they even have real real reviews.

You download the app yourself, you setup your profiles yourself. Everything seem legit because you actually setup the acounts.

You then put money into these "accounts", you watch the value go up and down like it normally would on a stock market. Then when you are happy with your "investment", time to withdrawal and there's no money to take out.

No worries, VMware or some of the other virtualization software's should work in this case as most other comments pointed out. Probably the most simple and straight to the point.

If you have the urge to tinker, another potential item or route you can look at is a proxmox machine. You can run multiple VMs in tandem at the same time. This would run on a standalone machine.

You would then be able to remote desktop into any virtualized OS on your home network. You can use a software like parsec which I like to access each machine from a clean interface.

I run a Hackintosh's dual booting Mac OS and Windows. So you solution is not insane as some have pointed out.

What I would suggest is maybe running a NAS on your local network to act as your share. Obviously this won't help if you dont store your working files on your NAS, but its an idea. I know no way to directly share between the two machines as they are technically not on at the same time.

Excellent example! Very rarely do you see a individual just shoot out from behind you in a line and by pass a whole queue of people.

Where as in a car you see people mounting a curb/sidewalk to make a right turn to squeeze past the individual in front of them. Or driving into oncoming traffic to get to the left hand turn lane a few seconds sooner. Or my favourite, seeing people stuck in highway traffic choose to off road to leave the highway, as opposed to waiting for the offramp. Meanwhile a crowed of individuals follows causing a unsafe situation for everyone.

Video for context regarding the last point.

While she helped, they honked: Pedestrian asks London drivers to show a bit more empathy https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7296036

London woman stopped to help man who'd collapsed at in the sidewalk at Richmond and Oxford But what made her challenge particularly difficult was that the drivers trying to get through the intersection honked with impatience and anger, swerving around her and darting through the intersection as she tried to help the man. "They were acting like I was a delinquent and I was just trying to help someone," she said. "Drivers will stop for Canada geese but you've got a man in distress and no one cares." Paramedics arrived shortly after and took the man who'd been struggling to hospital. Litsas doesn't know what caused him to collapse or how he's doing now. After the ordeal, she posted on the social media site Reddit about how some of the drivers chose to honk instead of help. "I was frustrated, I was a bit shaken up just having the traffic whiz by you and it's just an unnerving position to be in," she said. The purpose behind her post is to ask that drivers show some patience and empathy if a pedestrian appears to be struggling. "Stop, put your hazards on," she said. "It's a car against a human being and I'm not going to win against a five-tonne vehicle."

I would also argue "intent" needs to be taken into account, otherwise the general public would just be walking around destroying public and private property.

For example if a person walks or rushes through a door, and somehow the door falls off or breaks. Then that person should not be responsible for the damage, this would just be standard "wear and tear".

If that same individual intended to break the same example door with physical force, such as smash the glass, or rip the door off the hinges, then this would be property damage.

Anyways, in no way should a worker have to kneel and beg in any situation, especially when they fear losing their job if they dont make the next delivery.

This article IMO shows a lack of worker protections and on job support within the gig economy. Workers should not have this fear, especially for minimum wage. If something happens to a worker during their shift they should have a direct support line, with support staff ready to assist.

This is why bigbox stores like Walmart lease their stores. If they find a store trying to unionise they just close the store and say the area was not profitable. Scummy as hell but legal because the store "closed" and no longer exists, thus no union for the store.

Grassroots group urges Tim Hortons to put a lid on litter https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7267009

Vandertop, a co-founder of Don't Mess with the Don, says the restaurant chain Tim Hortons has a big problem when it comes to litter. The registered charity, run by volunteers, cleans up trash from ravines in the Don Valley and says it has picked up about 136,078 kilograms of garbage in the past six years. The number one brand it finds in its garbage cleanups is Tim Hortons, Vandertop said. "Imagine — Tim Hortons has more than 4,000 stores across Canada now and that would be millions and millions of cups and lids all strewn out throughout our parks, streets, wild spaces. And this is only cups and lids. There's also food wrappers, containers and other beverage containers," she said. "I think Tim Hortons, as a flagship Canadian company, has a tremendous opportunity here to do something good for the world and for the environment that we live in. This is not in line with the times." Karen Wirsig, senior program manager for plastics at Environmental Defence, an environmental advocacy organization, said it's important to hold corporations accountable for the waste they produce. Wirsig said Tim Hortons is a major generator of single-use plastic waste when it comes to its takeout packaging.

Why the Ford government nixed deposit on soft drink cans, bottles https://www.cbc.ca/amp/1.7260731

canada@lemmy.ca The province is in the midst of shifting the cost burden of trash away from municipalities (and municipal taxpayers), onto companies that make and sell products that generate waste.   For material that fills up blue boxes — including non-alcoholic drink containers — industry began paying an increased share of the costs last year and is to cover all of the costs from 2026. How it works: companies pay fees, based on the amount of waste material they create, to organizations that manage their sector's recycling programs.  The theory of the system — known as extended producer responsibility — is that it gives companies an incentive to reduce their packaging waste and increase recycling rates. Otherwise companies have to absorb the fees as a cost of doing business or pass them on to consumers.  When the government kick-started work on the deposit-return system last year, Piccini said it would "enable consumers to receive a refund for returning used beverage containers." For more than a year, momentum was building toward a key shift to try to improve things. Premier Doug Ford's government was seriously considering creating a deposit-return system for soft drink containers, a system that's already in place in eight other provinces and that already exists for beer, wine and spirits in Ontario. Then suddenly, with zero advance notice and no public announcement — and with a potential LCBO strike dominating the news — senior government officials scrapped plans for the deposit-return system. What follows is the inside story of how, in a battle with big financial implications for companies and big environmental implications for Ontario, Doug Ford's government sided with Big Grocery over Big Beverage. By abandoning deposit-return, the government bowed to pressure from the supermarket chains, said Wallis of Environmental Defence. "It's frustrating the amount of power that they seem to have and the amount of influence that they seem to have over policy," Wallis said. "These are companies that make money, lots of money from selling these drinks to us," she said. "Them refusing to participate in the kind of program that would actually keep these containers out of our environment is honestly shameful." The notion that consumers could face added costs under the deposit system is now the government's key justification for scrapping it.

In a video message posted on X on Monday, Premier Doug Ford announced the release of the tech tool that allows Ontario residents to locate stores, other than the LCBO, selling alcohol. “Our new interactive map shows thousands of convenient options where you can still buy beer, wine, spirits and other drinks across the province.” The release of the map comes days after LCBO workers walked off the job prompting  province-wide closures of the government-run liquor store.  The announcement is stirring up angry reactions from many residents and city officials, who accused Ford of union busting and failing to address pressing socio-economic issues. “While the Ford government wastes billions of tax dollars, schools need fixing, hospital wait times need attention, cities need support for transit, services & infrastructure, the science centre needs saving and people struggle to make ends meet. Yet, this guy’s priority is beer,” Councillor Josh Matlow wrote on X on Monday. “You’re using public dollars to break a strike, undermine workers rights and to destroy an agency that generates $2.5 billion for healthcare and other services. But this app looks cute. Why didn’t you use this kind of tech to save lives from COVID19 or to find ERs,” one X user wrote. “Can I get a map of where I can find emergency clinics that are open?,” another person said.

City scraps downtown pedestrian bridge project in Guelph Ontario. www.guelphtoday.com

Months after cancelling the construction contract for a new downtown pedestrian bridge in the face of “unforeseen challenges,” city officials have called off the project altogether. As stated in a post on the city’s website on Friday, plans to build a bridge over the Speed River connecting The Ward with Downtown Guelph have been scrapped. Instead, city officials will look for ways to include pedestrian flow into another nearby project over the river.

    TTC is a joke

Why does the TTC suck so much in customer service, and what's with the constant delays every single day. Sometimes going into the office (when I'm stuck between station for 30 minutes in a non-moving train), I wonder how much better it was during covid with a full WFH mandated. The TTC main complaint those last few years were no one is riding, but now they have ridership and they can't keep up with demand.

Cyclist cleans road signs as a hobby www.bbc.com

A cyclist's new hobby of cleaning street signs has already taken him as far afield as Belgium. John Edwards, from Shrewsbury, took up the hobby after spotting a video of a man improving signs during lockdown. Since then he has posted clips of his cleaning around the county, and has even been tidying up the signs in Belgium after watching a cyclist race. Mr Edwards said he was delighted to clean the signs and the response from the public was "gangbusters".

Big grocers, retailers want Ontario's recycling plan changed. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/toronto/ontario-blue-box-recycling-costs-industry-doug-ford-1.7168813

Ontario is in the process of shifting the cost burden of trash away from municipalities and onto companies that make and sell products that generate waste.  With this shift — called "extended producer responsibility" — industry now bears the full costs of recycling or recovering such items as tires, batteries, light bulbs and electronics.  Under the system, companies pay fees, based on the amount of waste material they create, to businesses that manage recycling programs, known as producer responsibility organizations (PROs).  It's up to the companies to choose whether to pass those fees on to consumers or to absorb them as a cost of doing business. The theory is that the fees provide the companies with an incentive to reduce their packaging and other waste. For material that fills up blue boxes — including beverage containers, paper, plastic, glass and metal — the transition to industry paying the full costs only began last year and is to be completed by 2026. Right now, companies are seeing their blue box fees shoot upward exponentially.  The government is facing corporate pressure to change Ontario's plan that sees industry taking on the full cost of blue box recycling programs. The industry is "trying to shirk its environmental responsibilities," "If producers are not paying for this packaging, it's going to be taxpayers, it's going to be the environment or it's going to be human health, and that would be a massive step backwards," Wallis said in an interview.

Toronto falls into the pit of urban decline that's plagued U.S. cities nationalpost.com

The GTA has been showing signs of the urban ills that are commonly associated with city life south the border. Downtown infrastructure has been deteriorating, as have cleanliness and order, which were once the city’s strong suits. In Ontario, growth has shifted to lower-cost places like Kitchener-Waterloo (110 kilometres from downtown Toronto), as well as Guelph (95 km), Peterborough (140 km) and London (195 km). Even long declining areas, like the Maritimes, have been gaining population in recent years. Clearly a new approach is merited. Leaders in Toronto have to accept dispersion and find the city’s niche within a wider range of settlements. Downtowns themselves, as Calgary’s urban leadership now suggests, will have to morph from primarily business centres to places more oriented to housing, academic and cultural activities. To be sure, swank high-rise projects may appeal to the wealthy and the childless. But the urban future lies in places that are walkable but not hyper-dense and can attract middle-income families.

Petition - Stop Daylight Saving Time in Canada - Change.org www.change.org

Join the petition to ask the Canadian government to adopt Standard Time all year round. "Changing clocks twice a year is hazardous to your health.  There are many studies showing that changing the clock and staying on Daylight Saving Time negatively impacts our circadian rhythm, causes increases in strokes and heart attacks, impacts people with depression and seasonal affective disorder and causes more car accidents.  I ask the Canadian Government to finally stop Daylight Saving Time and enact Permanent Standard Time. Even if one person is saved from having a stroke or heart attack or is saved from a car accident, it's worth it.  Support the health and safety of Canadians and set an example for the rest of the world.   Follow the scientific research. Do the right thing and not just the easy and uninformed thing.  Don’t change the clocks. Leave them on Standard Time year round. Do not spring forward."

Why North America zoning and building codes mean developers can't build nice family friendly "missing middle" housing/apartments www.youtube.com

We need to make our cities and towns more family friendly. This is called the "missing middle" in housing, and it's why in north america all we see are either large condo towers or single family homes, which also drives our urban sprawl problems. Which exacerbate out dependency on cars. Almost all new large towers/buildings in north america prioritize bachelor's units 1 and 2 bedroom units. Trying to find a well priced 3 or 4 bedroom in a "lively" downtown center, close to transit and work, with plenty of schooling in the area is almost impossible. It's also a factor in why cities became so empty during the pandemic, ie. Not to many families living permanently in cities. Here's a good article that also talks about the same issue with some different apparment layouts, and why developers don't provide adequate family units. https://www.centerforbuilding.org/blog/we-we-cant-build-family-sized-apartments-in-north-america This together with zoning requirements in north america is pushing most cities and developers to only cater towards large towers or single family housing.

[Article] Google to pay $100M a year to Canadian news publishers www.cp24.com

Google hits a paywall. On the heels of a deal struck last week between Ottawa and Google, the search behemoth will pay Canadian news publishers $100 million/year for the privilege of hosting their content. Is that a win for Ottawa? Well, on one hand, Canada is now one of the first countries to compel digital platforms to pay (and help keep alive) news publishers. On the other, $100 million is the exact number Google offered pre-standoff and 42% less than what the government wanted. Either way, at least the public can once again access news through Google. Ottawa has agreed to set a $100-million yearly cap on payments that Google will be required to make to media companies when the government's controversial online news legislation takes effect at the end of the year. The legislation is called The Online News Act passed earlier this year and would force platforms like Google, Meta, Facebook and Instagram’s parent company, to strike deals with Canadian media publishers for sharing, linking, previewing, and directing users to online Canadian news content.
