Thank you, I hadn't considered that style. All the YouTube videos use the mechanical click type, but you've got me thinking that the simpler beam style might be better for my situation.

Venus flytraps are great plants to keep, but they're not effective for pest control, especially against tiny gnats. The gnats you have are probably fungus gnats and your houseplants' soil is infested with their larvae. To get them under control you have to innoculate the soil with nematodes that eat the larvae. The particular brand I got on Amazon aren't available anymore, but the species was s. feltiae and they worked really well. There might be other good or better nematodes, but that's how you get rid of the gnats.

Take another shower. Taxes aren't used to fix inequality. They're used to fund infrastructure and services that we all need. They're also used sometimes to redistribute income, but the idea isn't to solve inequality. The idea is to get some income, in one form or another, to people who cannot or should not work, like the sick, children, the elderly, and anyone else excluded from the workforce. This non-working population needs income as much as the working population does and it doesn't make sense to force them to get it in inefficient and harmful ways. Taxation to solve inequality is a myth that isn't happening.

Yeah, that's exactly it. It's an open source alternative to Instagram based on ActivityPub, like Mastodon and Lemmy. In terms of functionality I think it's better than Instagram. There are no ads or sinister algorithms; I can select and copy text; I can easily reshare posts I like; and I can include working hyperlinks in my posts and replies.
The main benefits to running your own instance are that you don't have to rely on anyone else to keep the site running and you can decide for yourself about federating or not with other instances. For me it's also just a fun little DIY project to set up and maintain my own server.

No tulip trees, just a bunch of maples, a few oaks, and one black walnut. There's about 1/6 of an acre behind us in the photo with a cemetery beyond that. Plenty of space for the kiddo to romp around and the critters love it too.

You're kind of talking about different things. Copyright should of course be abolished along with all private property. I don't rule out compensation to your estate for organs harvested after death and there should definitely be a public bounty/reward system to encourage the living to donate.
You shouldn't be able to opt out, or at least it should be very difficult to do so, because when you are dead what you have a say in that affects the living should be very limited, because those organs won't matter to you anymore, and because those organs might matter very much to living people. Whether you trust society or not doesn't matter anymore when you are dead.

Because living people who are sick might need those organs, which would otherwise just go to waste in your corpse. Also, it good to have a steady supply of organs from the deceased in order to avoid perverse and exploitative market situations.

It was Eva Saxl. She had fled the Nazis from Czechoslovakia only to find herself under Japanese occupation in Shanghai. From the Wikipedia article, it seems like she extracted the insulin from water buffalo pancreas. I'm not sure if that counts as homebrewing. When I think of homebrew insulin, I think of actually manufacturing it by fermenting specialized yeast as opposed to harvesting it from animals. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but it isn't really the same.

There's not really a problem with meat either. You don't have to eat it and if you do, you don't have to feel bad about eating animals.
That said, there is kind of a problem with insulin manufacturing in that it's kind of centralized and distribution can be difficult, especially in remote areas with unreliable electricity. If insulin manufacturing could be done at the garage or shipping container scale in the places where it's needed, it would help a lot of people.

Calling the relationship between those countries an alliance is a big stretch. For all its leniency towards Germany during the interwar period, you'd have to call the US an ally to Germany as well, nevermind its infamously conciliatory treatment of the Nazis after the war (ie Operation Paperclip and the relatively rapid abandonment of denazification in West Germany). Furthermore, the US did not begin actually fighting the Nazis until after the USSR, and not until they were compelled by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
Regardless, we know what the Nazis did while they were in power and, as I previously cited, we know what they were going to do if they had prevailed. The fact is that after about four decades of Soviet rule, the Poles and other Eastern European peoples still exist and have thrived in comparison to the ethnic cleansing and extermination they would have faced under a victorious Nazi regime. Anyone whose family actually had an unfairly difficult time under the USSR has my condolences, but at least you're still around to express your resentment!

You're the one discounting lives. The murder rate for the Holocaust was at least 1.25 million per year and they had plans to keep going. The dubious allegations in the Black Book of Communism don't even come close to that kind of efficiency and completely discount the lives saved by having defeated the Nazis, which would not have been possible without the USSR's incredible sacrifice. It's one thing to have resentment for communism. It's just incredibly messed up to say that it's as bad or worse than Nazism.

You can indeed describe something as incomparably worse when it is so bad that a comparison doesn't make sense or there's no point to making one. I really don't think I'm the one who's out of line here.
Anyway, the whole "victims of communism" trope you're invoking is just embarrassingly facile. The numbers are contrived and no consideration is ever given to the terrible conditions out of which the various revolutions came or the horrible forces they were subsequently up against, let alone comparative conditions in the so-called free world. Everyone who ever lived and died in a communist state is a crime against humanity, but whenever someone dies in the US because they had to choose between medicine and rent it's their own damn fault. Give me a break.

Afaik, whenever an Activitypub instance has defederated from another it has always had to do with some combination of bad user behavior, poor moderation, and/or spam. Are the various instance admins who have decided to preemptively block threads.net simply convinced that these traits will be inevitable with it? Is it more of a symbolic move, because we all hate Meta? Or is the idea to just maintain a barrier (albeit a porous one) between us and the part of the Internet inhabited by our chuddy relatives? (For my part, I'm working on setting up my own Lemmy and/or Pixelfed instance(s) and I do not currently intend to defederate.)
Nothing comes up when I search for any of my fediverse/activity pub accountswin the new Threads app from Meta. Go figure.

I've been wanting to try out a mechanical keyboard for a while and I think I finally have the opportunity. The control keys on my old Alienware keyboard stopped working after I spilled some coffee on it, so I need a replacement. Also, I have an Amazon gift card. I see lots of mechanical keyboards on there with good reviews, but I was hoping to find some more guidance here. As far as what I'm looking for, I really just want something nicer to type with, but hopefully not too loud. A number pad and arrow keys would be nice, but maybe the smaller versions have some type of quick way to get that functionality when I need it. Any advice?
I'm not a submarine engineer, but I would have expected that some of the more complex systems would have failed before the pressure vessel. Then again, it seems like they chose a seemingly cost effective design that was [apparently susceptible to fatigue](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OceanGate#Titan?wprov=sfla1). Combine that with a profit motive to dive as many times as possible before retiring the hull and I suppose an implosion was practically inevitable. Oh well.

Mine was mostly pretty low-key, which is how I like it. I got some small gifts from my wife and daughter, including a 7oz hammer with a colorfully painted handle. I actually really liked that. For dinner my mother-in-law took us out to an expensive steakhouse, where I had a wonderful ribeye, but I don't think it was worth the price. I'm grateful and appreciative, but I think it was a little too much. I think that she and/or my father-in-law had a gift card, so it made sense for them. Besides all that, I somehow hardly had [to put up with any complaints](https://lemmy.one/post/71363), even from my ever opinionated four-year-old. I would have enjoyed the day a lot more [if I didn't have to worry about work today](https://lemmy.one/post/206070).

Shouldn’t the large denominations be coins, which last longer, and the small denominations be bills, which are easier to carry in large quantities?

What's the best way to run Lemmy on Yunohost? The Yunohost application is out of date (16.3), and I read somewhere that the image handling part of it is disabled. I also saw somewhere that it's possible to install it with the help of Docker, but I'm pretty unfamiliar with that. I'm already using Yunohost successfully for other reasons, so I figured I would just put a personal Lemmy instance on there. Any advice? I wonder if I could use the old Yunohost application and then update it manually as well as install pict-rs.

My kid just ran into the corner of the bed and gave herself a charlie horse. She started screaming and shouting "why!?" like Nancy Kerrigan and my wife and I just had to laugh. Anyone else ever think it's kind of funny when your kid does something like that? Our daughter is fine, btw.
Can I create a community on an instance with which I don't have an account? Can I serve as a moderator for a community with an account on an instance different than the community?
God I would love to mess with a celebrity in front of my kid when she's old enough to be embarrassed.
How do you all deal with complaining? Usually, I try to fix the problem, if there really is one, or deflect with humor. However, sometimes the complaining comes from all directions—my kid, my wife, my parents, my bosses, customers—and it wears me down. I find that pushing back can sometimes be counterproductive with some complainers. One time my wife had some complaint about how I mow the lawn. I asked her if she ever mowed a lawn and she was quiet after that. Unfortunately, these little victories don't happen very often. What sorts of tricks or tactics should I have ready to get people to pound sand without telling them to pound sand?
