Except that a tablet sized screen is not accomplishing the same goal as proper visibility

I never said that I was specifically advocating for that as the only solution. All that matters is if the same end is accomplished. If it is indeed true that the safety of a vehicle is only maximized when objects are directly visible to the driver, then so be it. If not, that is an unnecessarily specific and restrictive regulation. And, in any case, regulating a limit, and letting the market work within it, accomplishes the same end with the benefit of freedom of choice. An equivalent example would be regulating the maximum allowed emissions for a vehicle rather than mandating a specific design of the engine, exhaust system, etc.

I personally prefer the solution that maximizes liberty. If both routes, ie regulating compensation for lack of vision and prohibition of that which causes the lack of vision, accomplish the same end, ie the ensurement of safety, I would choose for former, as it maximizes personal choice and freedom.

It seems to be an EasyCAP clone, there are several devices in this form factor with different chipsets.

Good to know! That link has a lot of good information.

This capture device seems to be labeled as “BR116” based on photos in reviews, which can help identifying the chipset. BR116 is sold by Conrad and its manual by them mentions “STK1160” in a screenshot, so this Amazon one most likely also uses the STK1160 chip, which was one of the worst ones in this timebase stability test (which means it has no TBC). However, it’s alright if your VCR is a late model that already does TBC internally.

Noted! I will keep this in mind.

I came across this video about digitizing VHS tapes [1]. It talks about hardware to use, and hardware to avoid [1.6]. One of the examples that it gives for hardware to avoid seems to be a clone of the device that I was looking at on Amazon [1.2]. The rationale for why it should be avoided was that it doesn't pass both fields of the interlaced video through independently [1.1]. Though, you have mentioned that it's fine to capture the video interlaced, so perhaps this isn't a big deal-breaker. The capture cards that the video recommends are:

    • IO-Data GV-USB2 [1.3]
    • StarTech.com SVID2USB232 [1.4]
    • Dazzle DVC-100 v1.1 [1.5]

Get an actual composite capture card for the job.

Ha, honestly, I wish that I would've done this to begin with. It's way cheaper, and simpler to get the one composite capture card rather than converting composite to HDMI, then capturing HDMI. I'm honestly not entirely sure why I did the latter — perhaps it's because I was under some presumption that such a device wouldn't exist (which, now, I realize is an obviously silly assumption to make). I found this one. It's still just a generic capture card, but it's a direct composite capture. Do you think that it would suffice?

This makes me wonder if there could be a regulation mandating front facing cameras on vehicles where vision is obstructed when moving at low speeds. Perhaps collision alert systems are sufficient. At any rate, there should probably be something that mandates some form of compensation for the lack of vision.

Check that the output is indeed interlacd

Is it possible to see this in OBS? I see an option to select an interlacing technique if I right click the scene

Look at stats/logs to see of any frames are dropped and investigate if it’s just the 59.94 Hz compensation

Are you referring to "stats/logs" within OBS?

make sure to disable auto-gain or else quiet sections will get boosted like crazy, increasing the noise.

If you are referring to a toggle on the capture card or the converter, neither have a button for that, so I think my setup is fine in that regard?

This was very informative! Thank you for your comment!

you should check that the video output is actually at [59.94 Hz]

How does one measure the input frequency of the video feed? I'm not aware of OBS being able to monitor the frequency/refresh-rate of individual input devices, but I could certainly be wrong.

Don’t use the converter if it cannot output 480i or at the very least 480p! Scaling should happen during playback, the files should be original resolution.

I looked on Amazon again, and it seems that every converter being sold only outputs 720p, or 1080p — none of them simply repeat the input resolution, eg 480p or 480i. Would you have a converter in mind that would accomplish this?

I was just thinking that the cleaning process might damage the VCR (as one is rummaging around in its internals [1]), so it'd be better to use a worse quality VCR for cleaning, and a good quality one for digitization.

you should definitely not use default deinterlacing techniques for the video

What "default deinterlacing techniques" are you referring to?

you should [...] especially not [use deinterlacing techniques] built into these generic dongles

How do I find out that information for the 2 things that I purchased (mentioned in the post)? How would I even control that? Only the composite to HDMI converter has a single switch from 720p to 1080p. I don't see anything else that would control what interlacing technique is used.

Capture [the video] interlaced, preferrably as losslessly as possible

What method do you recommend to accomplish this?

use deinterlacing software where you can fine-tune the settings if you need to.

    Is this possible in OBS?

TBC can obviously be done in software if you have the raw composite or head signal but that is not possible with the capture cards you have.

If I did want to capture the raw signal, do you have any methods and/or tools that you would recommend to accomplish this?

Do you have any advice for digitizing VHS tapes?

I have a bunch of old VHS tapes that I want to digitize. I have never digitized VHS tapes before. I picked up [a generic HDMI capture card](https://www.amazon.com/Capture-Streaming-Broadcasting-Conference-Teaching/dp/B09FLN63B3), and [a generic composite to HDMI converter](https://www.amazon.com/ABLEWE-Converter-Composite-Supporting-Blue-Ray/dp/B0C281DRZR). Using both of those, I was planning on hooking a VCR up to a computer running [OBS](https://obsproject.com/). Overall, I'm rather ignorant of the process. The main questions that I currently have are as follows: - What are the best practices for reducing the risk of damaging the tapes? - Are there any good steps to take to maximize video quality? - Is a TBC required (can it be done in software after digitization)? - Should I clean the VCR after every tape? - Should I clean every tape before digitization? - Should I have a separate VCR for the specific purpose of cleaning tapes? Please let me know if you have any extra advice or recommendations at all beyond what I have mentioned. Any information at all is a big help.

[SOLVED] Have you ever experienced stuttering in a game if you receive a message in a desktop messaging app during gameplay?

    ## Solution This is a bug in KDE Plasma [1.1][2]. It appears that it might be fixed in KDE Plasma v6.2 [1.2][3]. ## Original Post I have noticed this behavior with [Element](https://archlinux.org/packages/extra/x86_64/element-desktop/) and [Signal](https://flathub.org/apps/org.signal.Signal) while playing [Deadlock](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1422450/Deadlock/). The game will have a pretty severe stutter, ie the frame-rate will substantially dip, for half a second or so at the exact moment that a message is received. It seems to happen with every message. Do note that these are only messages that would result in a system notification. All other messages that are silent, ie they have no pop-up notification, do not result in any stutter. - OS: Arch Linux, Kernel: v6.6.49-1-lts - DE: KDE Plasma v6.1.4 - WM: Wayland - CPU: Intel Core i5-4690k - GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6600 ## Updates - I have tried disabling this setting in Deadlock: ![](https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/fb179d51-0f68-434f-9e10-6894588d8938.png) - I have tried windowed-borderless - I have noticed that the moment that the stutter occurs, my CPU spikes maybe 20% and my GPU drops to 0%. ::: spoiler References 1. Personally, I have little interest in learning or dealing with C++ solely for the sake of developing KDE applications. I would much rather use Rust.

Imo, restricting the languages that can be used for app development cuts out large swaths of developers who would otherwise be eager to develop software for the project. I'm sure there are some who wouldn't mind picking up C++ for this cause, but I'd wager that they are a minority. Gnome beats out KDE in that regard, imo, as GTK has bindings and documentation for many languages.

[SOLVED] Do Creative Commons licenses require one to reference the license when citing a licensed work if one is quoting content from that work?

    ## Solution It turns out that quotes fall under "fair-use" [4][5], so technically one isn't required to even give *attribution* to the source of the quote; however, in practical purposes, this means that there are simply no restrictions on how one *cites* a quote. ## Original Post Creative Commons licenses require that credit be given to creator of a work [1]. This is stated as: > Attribution — You must give appropriate credit , provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made . You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use. [2] "Appropriate credit" is defined as: > appropriate credit — If supplied, you must provide the name of the creator and attribution parties, a copyright notice, a license notice, a disclaimer notice, and a link to the material. CC licenses prior to Version 4.0 also require you to provide the title of the material if supplied, and may have other slight differences. [2] This seems to be stating that if you, say, quote content from a CC licensed work, when you cite it, say, with MLA or APA, you'll have to also include a copyright notice, a license notice, and a disclaimer notice. This seems like way too much for a simple citation. MLA claims that you don't need to include the license [3], so I'm not entirely sure what is legally expected. ::: spoiler References 1. If it's the latter, you should be able to just select the flash drive as the install point (though, tbc, I have never tried this, but I don't see why it wouldn't work) (I think you'd need 2 USBs, though — you'd need 1 to be the installer source, and one to be the install point — I don't think theres any installer that can run as a desktop application. Though, if it's Arch Linux, you might actually be able to call pacstrap from the host OS — I've never tried this after having already installed the OS). This is amazing! Thank you so much for doing this!! Would you mind telling me your process for extracting the data from the graph? Did you tediously manually extract eye-balled data-points? Or, did you run it through some software which extracted them? Or, perhaps, did you just find and use the original data source?

I'd like to see a logarithmic version of this graph. Picking out a straight line in a log graph is easier than trying to discern an exponential. I want that juicy exponential.

TIL that you can sort GitHub issues by most "upvoted"

You can sort GitHub issues by most "upvoted" using this syntax: ```text is:issue is:open sort:reactions-+1-desc ``` Thanks to [gromenauer](https://github.com/gromenauer) for making me aware of it in [this GitHub comment](https://github.com/johannesjo/super-productivity/issues/25#issuecomment-2297448290). Full documentation for sorting GitHub issues and pull requests can be found [here](https://docs.github.com/en/issues/tracking-your-work-with-issues/filtering-and-searching-issues-and-pull-requests). **EDIT (2024-08-27T05:20Z):** There are also UI options that enable sorting by most "upvoted": - On desktop (through a web browser): ![](https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/f15d832b-f124-4115-985d-7b5c5eb11637.png) - On mobile (through the app): ![](https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/60263c6a-f66d-4bec-a30a-758ff524359d.png)

If you have installed Linux on a Microsoft Surface Pro, what was your experience?

I'm looking for a cheap and portable tablet that I can use for writing. Microsoft Surface Pro tablets, at least around the gen 4 models, are rather cheap to buy used, and they seem decently well made. Naturally, were I to buy one, I would have to install Linux onto it. I've been peripherally aware of [the Linux Surface project](https://github.com/linux-surface/linux-surface) for some time now. I looked at it recently, after having not for some time, and it seems that they have really made good progress compared to what I remember, and it's making me much more interested in trying to install Linux on a Surface Pro. Having never owned a Surface Pro, I'm not sure which models are the most reliable and sturdy. I'm not looking for something that's the flashiest; I want something that works well. I want something pragmatic — something akin to the idea of an older era of Thinkpad (eg T460). I want a pen with low input delay and good accuracy, reliable and responsive touch controls, and a decent display. I was thinking the Surface Pro 4 might be a good choice, but it's hard to know as there aren't many videos out there of people installing Linux on them, so I'm wondering what your experience has been with Microsoft Surface Pro's and installing Linux on one. --- Cross-posts: - https://sh.itjust.works/post/23997573

Does it matter if one performs a system update while Reflector is running?

My config for reflector is currently set as follows: ``` # Set the output path where the mirrorlist will be saved. --save /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist # Select the transfer protocol. --protocol https # Use only the most recently synchronized mirrors. --latest 200 # Sort the mirrors by synchronization time. --sort rate # Return, at most, the following number of mirrors. --number 20 # Print extra info. --verbose ``` I have Reflector set to run as a Systemd service, so it will run when my computer boots. The "issue" is that I update my system as soon as I boot. Since Reflector is sorting mirrors by their measured download rate, I wonder if downloading updates, or simply doing any action that downloads data, would interfere with those measurements and cause Reflector to choose mirrors that may not be the fastest. I *could* simply wait for Reflector to finish before using the computer, but it takes quite a while to sort through 200 mirrors. Is this concern justified? If so, are there ways to mitigate it that don't require me to wait for Reflector to finish? I've thought about setting it as a Pacman hook so that it runs *after* updating, but, then, that relies on me to perform an update for the mirrorlist to be refreshed, and that still leaves the concern of other actions eating up network bandwidth, thus skewing the measurements.

Beware: Dr. Daniel Amen may be a grifter

[Dr. Amen](https://danielamenmd.com/) seemingly is a very popular "ADHD influencer". Many of his claims surrounding ADHD, however, are scientifically dubious. His main claim to fame is his work with SPECT imaging as a tool for diagnosing mental disorders [11]. Specifically relevant to this community is his advocacy for its purported use in diagnosing ADHD [12]; however, there is virtually no research to support this practice [1]. The only research that does exist (as far as I've been able to find, anyways) is a paper that *he* co-authored [2]. The paper *does* appear to show that SPECT can be used to measure observable differences between ADHD brains and the control brains [2.1], but one paper is far from an established body of supportive science for a medical practice that he touts and charges money for [5][10][13]. In addition to this, he also diagnoses what he calls the "7 types of ADD" [6]. This is not standard diagnostic practice in the DSM-5 [7]. He also operates an online store at brainmd.com where he sells many supplements that he has publicly claimed help with ADHD management [3.1], and he advocates for their use in his practice [4] — this is a conflict of interest; however, the supplements that he advocates for (that I have looked into) *do* have some research behind them [8][9], but they appear to not be well established treatments. I would also be wary of his research as he has openly stated that he doesn't respect the main body of psychiatric researchers, and that he doesn't wish to listen to their criticism [3.2]. I don't intend for this post to be interpreted as a trashing of Dr. Amen's reputation, nor do I fault him for trying to earn a living. There is simply a large potential for shady behavior given the context as a whole, and I believe that it is wise to be very cautious of his advice. I do hope that his research turns out to be beneficial, and not exploitative — I think that there is great benefit to be had from more accurate diagnostic methods, and improved classifications. --- ::: spoiler References 1. If instance A defederates from instance B does that mean that users on A will never see users from B?

For example, say an instance C is not defederated with B nor A. Can a user on A see users from B if they visit a community on C? If so, to what extent can the users from A and B interact with each other on C?

I require assistance with fixing OKOD on a Linksys E8450

Unfortunately, a Linksys E8450 of mine has succumbed to the OKOD (OpenWRT Kiss of Death) ([in case you are unfamiliar](https://old.reddit.com/r/openwrt/comments/1b9lpo6/rt3200_important_updateinfo/)). From what I understand, it should be recoverable from it's current effectively bricked state. I've tried going through the process, but I haven't had too much luck, and I'm somewhat stuck at the moment, so I would appreciate some guidance. There's two potential objectives that I am hoping to acheive: the first, and primary, objective is to simply recover the router from its currently bricked state so that it can be used like normal, and secondly, if possible, recover the data, and configuration that was on it. I have tried following [this guide](https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/e8450#recovery_from_openwrt_kiss_of_death_okd), but I'm not sure what I am supposed to do at the end. I completed the last step, but the router still isn't able to boot on its own. If I run `boot` from the U-Boot console, it appears to be able to boot into the OpenWRT CLI, but if I then reboot from that CLI, it shows the following error: ```text F0: 102B 0000 F6: 0000 0000 V0: 0000 0000 [0001] 00: 0000 0000 BP: 0400 0041 [0000] G0: 1190 0000 T0: 0000 02D7 [000F] Jump to BL NOTICE: BL2: v2.9(release):OpenWrt v2023-07-24-00ac6db3-2 (mt7622-snand-1ddr) NOTICE: BL2: Built : 21:45:35, Oct 9 2023 NOTICE: CPU: MT7622 NOTICE: WDT: [40000000] Software reset (reboot) NOTICE: SPI-NAND: FM35Q1GA (128MB) ERROR: BL2: Failed to load image id 3 (-2) ``` That same error is what shows when I watch the serial output of the router while it boots from the power switch.

My Linksys E8450 has been kissed by Death, so I am looking for recommendations for an alternative router, should I be unsuccessful in its recovery.

My Linksys E8450 has succumbed to the OKOD (OpenWRT Kiss of Death). In case you are unaware, the OKOD essentially is the E8450 spontaneously dying. loss of power, or a reboot can lead to it completely dying — the lights don't come on, and it is essentially bricked. Afaik, it is currently unknown exactly what causes it. Anyways, it may be possible to recover, and I am currently working on that, but should I not be able to recover it, I will need to purchase a new router. To that end, I am looking for recommendations for a new router that is equal to, or better than the Linksys E8450 (it must be well supported by OpenWRT). I may just buy another E8450, but I am curious if there is a better alternative.

When responding to a comment with multiple points, should one create a new thread (new comment) for each point, or should one make a single large comment containing individual responses to all points?

I encounter situations like this rather often where I am responding to a comment that contains many individual points/statements. I typically will respond with a single comment that contains a quote of each point that is being responded to with my response under neath the respective quote — and, sometimes, for added clarity, a horizontal line separating each response. For example: > Statement 1 My response to Statement 1 --- > Statement 2 My response to Statement 2 --- etc. I wonder if it would be better practice to have atomic responses to comments — create a single comment for each individual statement, i.e. spawn a new thread for each new atomic topic. This would allow scores to be representative of each specific response rather than an average of the total, and it may also help with clarity when reading through the comment section, as well as easing the creation of responses (not needing to rely on formatting so much). For example **Comment 1 in reply to comment with multiple points:** > Statement 1. My response to Statement 1. **Comment 2 in reply to the comment with multiple points:** > Statement 2. My response to Statement 2. etc.

Hector Aubertin went on a cross-Canada roadtrip with his pet goat named Jimmy https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/jimmy-travelling-goat-1.7219713?cmp=rss

    > Jimmy the goat was rejected by his mother, so Hector Aubertin stepped up and became his best friend [...] "Everywhere we go, people are doing double takes," Aubertin told As It Happens host Nil Köksal. "He's probably had his picture taken easily 100 times." [...] "After the first week or so, we formed a bond. I literally cannot go anywhere without him or he just starts blaa-ing. He wants to know where I am. He needs to be with me." [...] So when it came time to go on a long-planned road trip to Edmonton with his daughter to visit her sisters, Aubertin figured he had no choice but to bring Jimmy along for the ride. [...] "We go everywhere. We go to the stores. We go to Canadian Tire. I can get him to come to me, you know. I can get him to lay down if I need to. He listens very well," he said. "He's like a dog, but twice as fun and just a little bit harder to train." [...] "He is absolutely my best friend. We go everywhere together," Aubertin said. "He's done so much for me." --- - "'We go everywhere together,' says man who took baby goat on a cross-Canada road trip". Sheena Goodyear. 2024-05-30T21:22Z. Could someone explain to me exactly what this feature is? www.phoronix.com

The article says the following: > Linux 6.10 is introducing support for Trusted Platform Module (TPM2) encryption and integrity protections to prevent active/passive interposers from compromising them. This follows a recent security demonstration of TPM key recovery from Microsoft Windows BitLocker being demonstrated. TPM sniffing attacks have also been demonstrated against Linux systems too, thus the additional protections be made with Linux 6.10 to better secure TPM2 modules. I'm a little confused with this article. Is it talking about implementing TPM parameter encryption? If so, does this mean that the TPM bus prior to kernel v6.10 was unencrypted? Will this kernel feature still require a patch to be made to software like systemd-cryptenroll? Are the sniffing attacks that it's talking about examples of MITM attacks like [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTl4vEednkQ)?
