I'm sure most of what they do is great. My only experience with them is a really unfortunate beef they took up with a bakery I worked at. Before they started their theatrics, we had a row of clean bins behind the bakery where expired bread that had been returned from grocery stores was placed before being sold to a pig farm. People could quietly go get what ever they wanted, whenever they wanted. We put them there to be discreet.

So the FNB folks show up and start, like an anti (our bakery) campaign, putting up signs all over the place about how we throw away edible food because the government pays us to(?) and everyone should storm the dumpster area and liberate the bread.

This caused a much less discreet situation (people showing up and screaming at us and the neighbors while filling vehicles with bread that they would then "distribute" to homeless camps and full loaves of packaged bread became a ubiquitous litter item in the area) which of course attracted the attention of the health department who made us move the bins to a secure area and install individual locks on each one (a huge pain in the ass for the workers).

The reason for all the extra bread is another story, to do with grocery stores insisting on planned over buying to maintain "bountiful shelves" and then forcing companies to buy back what didn't sell in the allotted time. Trader Joes having empty bread shelves at the end of the day is a really good thing.

Get aggressive about not letting corporations hoover up all the housing and price gouging renters. A stupid amount of housing is being built in CA right now. Homeowners are being tirelessly harassed by Blackstone to sell their homes at well over market value in an effort to get all the houses out of private ownership. Like, ALL of them.

A really sweet friend of mine got very angry at a member of her crafting group. So she sent everyone, including the offender, a care package but hers was not quite as nice as the others. SO THERE. She felt very vindicated.

I've started using the Celtic calendar to mark the seasons. I don't have kids or a summer break, so it just helps avoid frustration at the weather. It fits better with the seasons where I live. It puts the solstices and equinoxes as the "peak" of the season instead of the beginning of the season like US calendars do. This is closer to how the weather works where I live in California.

Summer starts in the beginning of May (Beltane/May Day), peaks in June on the longest day of the year (Midsummer/Litha/Summer Solstice) and ends in the beginning of August (Lughnasadh/Lamas/First Harvest).

This also means that Christmas/Winter Solstice/Yule is peak winter, not the "first day of winter" which always seemed stupid to me, and Halloween is the closing of Fall.

Interesting! Does the curbside program bill you by weight as well? That sounds labor intensive, compared to here where you just rent the $small, $$medium or $$$large bin and pay quarterly regardless of use. And recycling and composting are free.

That is neat! But since it charges you to put things in, wouldn't that encourage people to just throw their food in the trash? Or is that discouraged somehow?

The county I live in (Northern California) requires that household food waste go into the curbside compost bin, or home compost. They do random checks to make sure you haven’t put any food in the landfill bin and you can get a fine.

It gets turned into compost for landscaping, along with the yard waste, not food though.
