A community focused on discussions on movies and TV shows.

It's called movies as hopefully at some point in the future we'll have TV shows split, but as Lemmy still has a small community it makes sense to consolidate both types of content here

We are currently around 50k monthly active users. What do you think could lead to the next newcomers wave?

A few ideas from the top of my head - Flairs that can be allowed to filter content in a community - Major online communites (can be subreddits, or other communities) moving to Lemmy - Reddit removing old.reddit - Reddit banning people using VPNs (already happening, see [!reddit@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/c/reddit) ) - Lemmy becoming the reference source of knowledge for a certain domain Second point is probably crucial, but I don't see any major subreddit wanting to move here. StarTrek is the exception more that the rule.

I see where they come from, but from a new user perspective, it's quite confusing to see too similar-looking communities, more or less similarly active, with more or less the same type of content, and not know where to post

!android@programming.dev is more software development oriented, and !android@lemmy.ml has the typical lemmy.ml spin to it.

I’m not sure how either side would agree to “merge”, since wanting self-governance was the reason the split happened in the first place.

Indeed, but on that point I'm not sure how the LW is currently moderated. The moderators don't seem that active (it's a trend I've noticed among a few LW communities). If I have some time in the coming days, I might contact them to see if they are still interested in managing that community, or if uniting forces with lemdro.id would make more sense

    Hello,

The two communities you listed seem more adequate to promote existing communities, I've done it in the past when reviving a community.

About keeping activity, don't worry, I'm sure we'll done fine, we are regular posters after all, if there's a group with a high chance of posting, it's this one.

An another note, we could maybe promote those two communities to a wider audience, maybe !asklemmy@lemmy.world ?

I think it also depends how popular the topic is.

Gaming, as you said, exists on several platforms, with different mods and teams because it's a quite popular topic.

On the other hand, I also regularly browse !android@lemmy.world and !android@lemdro.id, and they seem pretty similar to me (be it rules or content wise), they are also lacking some activity, so they would probably benefit from being merged, and having one as the reference.

But not every instance has the same governance as lemmy.zip.

    Agreed

Would you also be fine with some community becoming de facto reference on beehaw.org or hexbear.net or lemmy.world?

No, and that's why I listed SJW and lemm.ee in my OP (to be honest, I should probably change LW to lemmy.zip)

    Beehaw is too deferated indeed.

Hexbear comes with their own specific stance.

LW, I feel like they are okay for now. The major issue I see with them is the federation with Threads, but that can always change (and probably will if we get millions of trolls at once)

I guess my idea would be to have a subset of instances that are compatible, rules and federation wise (lemmy.zip, lemm.ee, SJW, Reddthat.com), and spread communities among them, with one reference community on one single instance.

LW centralization is an issue on its own, but that's the subject of another thread already.

What are the best examples of a director going "all out" to get the best out of their actors?

Two examples: Saving Private Ryan - Spielberg made the whole main cast go through 2 weeks of "hell week" boot camp. He made them suffer together. Then he flew Matt Damon in on a private jet, put him up in a nice place, and made the rest of the cast fully aware of it. So there was actually real animosity towards Damon for not having suffered like they did and you could feel it in the movie. Inglorious Bastards - Quinton told Eli Roth they were going to shoot the "bear Jew" scene a certain day. He put him in the cave and filmed other things. Only to say they weren't ready for him. He did this I think 2 or 3 days in a row. When Roth finally comes out you can just see in his eyes the craziness and I can't imagine how it must have felt to finally be set free from this literal cage (cave). What other examples do you know?

Movie lines people laughed at in theaters despite not actually being intended to be funny?

I remember in Revenge of the Sith, when the actor playing Vader yells "nooooooooo", at what is supposed to be the emotional climax of the trilogy, the theater roared in laughter. Do you have other examples?

Reminder that we have a complementary discussion-focused community at !movies@lemm.ee

tl;dr: [!movies@lemm.ee](https://lemm.ee/c/movies) is a complementary community mostly focused on discussions rather than news Hello everyone, As I did a few weeks ago to share the [discussion thread ](https://lemmy.world/post/12820343)about Dune: Part II, I just wanted to share again about [!movies@lemm.ee](https://lemm.ee/c/movies). **Why another movie community?** There are a few movies communities on Lemmy, be it this one or [!moviesandtv@lemm.ee](https://lemm.ee/c/moviesandtv). They are mostly focused on movies news, but don't have much discussion threads about current movies. On top of that, as Lemmy doesn't have unique URLs for posts, there is no way to just have a megathread pinned with links to discussion threads, as those would only work for people on one instance. Which is why [!movies@lemm.ee](https://lemm.ee/c/movies) was created. Our most successful thread so far was for Dune: Part II ([direct link to the thread](https://lemmy.world/post/12466770)), and we hope to have other insightful discussions about movies in the future. Some time ago someone expressed that one of the things they were missing from Reddit was being able to go to a discussion thread after having watch a movie to read other opinions on it, we are trying to fill that gap. Have a good day.

Is Lemmy.world centralization worth fighting against?

Probably a very polarizing question. On the one hand, having most of the users and communities on LW causes technical issues (see [this post](https://lemmy.world/post/13967373)), and also gives the LW staff too much power over Lemmy as a whole. On the other hand, with 18k MAU on LW out of 47k (https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy/), every community listed there has a much higher chance of visibility compared to an alternative hosted on another instance History of LW controversial decisions - when they promoted Discord as an official communication channel (https://lemmy.world/post/3478399 - since then they created a Matrix chat) - when they blocked the piracy communities (https://lemmy.world/post/13320356 ) - when they announced they might move from Lemmy to Sublinks (some comments from LW admins were quite controversial: https://lemmy.world/post/13899357 ) - when they forced the media bias fact checker bot and discarded user feedback (https://lemmy.world/post/18775630 - to be fair, they since then removed it from [!news@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/c/news) , it's still in [!politics@lemmy.world](https://lemmy.world/c/politics) ) - when they realized centralization of communities on LW was impacting the ability of other instances to stay up to date (https://lemmy.world/post/13967373 ) - when they updated their rules following a power trip overtake of a community (https://feddit.org/post/2308651 )
