Taiwan has been able to effectively respond to Chinese disinformation in part because of how seriously the threat is perceived there, according to Kenton Thibaut, a senior resident fellow and expert on Chinese disinformation at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab. Instead of a piecemeal approach — focusing solely on media literacy, for instance, or relying only on the government to fact-check false rumors — Taiwan adopted a multifaceted approach, what Thibaut called a “whole of society response” that relied on government, independent fact-check groups and even private citizens to call out disinformation and propaganda.

Given the degrees of separation from other nations' disinformants in some situations, how do you help the public take the hostility/threat of their disinformants more seriously to help build a counterinfluence apparatus?

And even though this is lemmy, when I searched for “Ubuntu Help”, there’s no community named that. There’s also no community named “Linux help”. Which I find very very odd. Lemmy of all places you’d think would have a linux help community!
Have you been by !linuxquestions@lemmy.zip yet? Nevertheless, this community should work just as well.
There's also !linux4noobs@programming.dev or a community with the same name on Lemmy World. When specificity in a search fails, falling back to broader/more basic terms may help (e.g. searching for Ubuntu or Linux).

I think separating them improves the user experience for regular users, which I think counts as a real advantage. As I wrote in the body text:
As-is seeing an indication of a comment for a post only for it to turn out to be a bot is slightly disappointing at best, and mildly confusing at worst when their display has been disabled.
It's a small detail, but small details add up when it comes to the user experience.
For admins and moderators, keeping the comment counts including bot comments visible (especially in a moderators' own communities) may be valuable, but not sure if it's all that valuable for ordinary users. Would it be possible to make it so bot comments don't add to the counts for regular users, or at least for those that have disabled the display of bot posts/comments? As-is seeing an indication of a comment for a post only for it to turn out to be a bot is slightly disappointing at best, and mildly confusing at worst when their display has been disabled.

If I just wanted to label it, colored tape. I don’t know if colored masking tape is ideal – my experience has been that masking tape left on a surface for a long time leaves some goo, though Goo Gone might get that off. But I suspect that it’d stay on the thing for a long time.
Yeah, the gooey factor is one of the only reasons I've been somewhat iffy on using masking tape for this purpose. However if it holds up to where it doesn't need replacement, could be a nonfactor all things considering.
Looking at you various USB cables with subtly different capabilities.

I wonder, how might they reduce the cost of these? It's a cool concept, and I can understand some of the cost, but when your alternatives (simple pen & paper or marker & dry erase board) are substantially cheaper it makes this a harder sell.

If they added speakers to let people hear music or make phone calls via the glasses, it’d be an even more compelling device, especially with an intuitive UI.
Might a decent built-in mic that doesn't override/compete with some wireless earbuds/headphones possibly be a better combo? Would keep battery drain and weight on the glasses down.

The hard flat back gives your flesh something to press up against when pinching. Imagine pulling a hair out of your arm with your fingers. Easy, right? Now imagine pulling a hair out of your arm with your lips.
Are...Your fingers boneless? For awhile I kept my fingernails cut probably far too short and didn't have too much trouble pulling the occasional arm hairs. That said, point stands regarding picking up smaller stuff, and I appreciate the amusing visual and nail enthusiasm!
They seem like one more bodily detail to tend to without much benefit, and sometimes more detriment (breaking a nail or scratching oneself up, ouch!).
Somehow I missed what out of this world happened to result in some people stranded in space, and I thought it'd be fun/interesting to see how others describe what led to it.
I've been watching more shows from before 2020 and losing track of more recent ones, so I'm interested in what shows have been entertaining people lately.

In the case of children, isn't some of this on the parents involved as well? Have the parents of affected children talked to each other about it and reached out to the parents of the bullies to ask if they know their child's been bullying or however one might go about that conversation?
That said, Apple's certainly in the wrong in taking advantage of this, and in many ways it's no surprise. They're essentially a luxury brand, whose entire business model is exploiting this kind of behavior of social pressure and buying specific products to better fit into a group.
While sometimes logs aren't too difficult to follow, there's also often times they're inscrutable to those not in the weeds of their respective OS. So I was wondering if anyone around here might have some pointers to guides or the like for where to find, and help understanding, different system error logs. On Windows there's Event Viewer to some extent, and on Linux I think it's typically /var/log (and some distros may have a GUI System Log Viewer?). Not sure of MacOS. Thanks in advance for any replies with pointers to resources!

OP asks the real life equivalent of being AFK which, assuming you’re normally regularly online, only really corresponds to being high or sleeping.
The funny thing is, it didn't occur to me how vague my question was until after I posted and started seeing the replies. That's made it more fun tbh, and interesting as in this context (online vs. in real life) I've not really thought of being online in such individualistic terms as this and some other replies suggest.

Is there something mystical to this?
Not really from a privacy concern, that's simply a bonus, more of a reliability/convenience interest. Even if internet/mobile internet is out for some reason, being able to easily text across local network would be nice. For Windows/Android mainly, but crossplatform tools that include those are great too!
The [International] tag is meant to be broadly inclusive, for those wondering, as I'm interested in this subject from all nationalities/continents. I'm guessing the methods may be somewhat similar, but never know how they might be better elsewhere till you ask!

Sometimes what I'm interested in may be more specific or niche, but a lot of search engines and filtering systems don't seem to provide a way to drill down to those results. What may be some reasons behind that? Or am I overlooking some obvious ways to search/filter this way?

Stuff could be anything, digital or physical, but the idea is of discussing and doing it as a hobby without any pressure or push to make it a business or side-gig. Nothing against that, simply that communities/groups with that atmosphere are easy enough to find as-is.
If sociology's exclusive to humans, then what might be the field of other social animal research?
There's probably a different word for it, but linkhole like rabbithole. You went to this one site, and it mentioned some other site, and they kept your interest and kept linking on to others and you've surfaced just long enough to share here.
I was working on some stuff on my PC and stepped away for a bit, and on returning noticed notifications on it that some files had been downloaded via KDE Connect from my phone. I was using my phone at the time, and didn't send the files. I know that you can quietly download files from a phone with its paired device (i.e. no notification on the phone, nor prompting permission) from allowed directories, but these files weren't from those directories, so...What may have happened here? Glitched notifications, or something else? Also, the downloaded files weren't anywhere on my PC, so... 😕 **edit:** I found an issue report I think may be what I was seeing: [KDE Connect spams the desktop with a torrent of old notifications.](https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=411753)

In Lemmy there's presently no option for this, and I gather similar functionality (auto-follow submitted posts & notify for replies) is on PieFed, but can't tell if there's any option to disable notifications/unsubscribe from one's own posts (yet). **edit:**Thanks for the reply [@andrew\_s@piefed.social](https://piefed.social/u/andrew_s)!
