Polaris strikes me as the retelling of a fever dream. I did enjoy The White Ship more than Polaris because it seemed to be a little more cohesive. Either story could easily be the basis for a concept album by Rush or an epic song by Iron Maiden.

I have to admit that I don't much care for these early writings. They are brief and somewhat disjointed, a little too dreamlike to hold my interest. I do hold them in some regard since they show the beginnings of his Dreamlands ideas that take on fuller form in his later writings.

The Doom That Came To Sarnath was my first introduction to the writings of HPL many many years ago. I enjoy re-reading it as much as I did the first time. This time I opted to listen to it on HorrorBabble, the narrater was very good.

I always find myself thinking about little side stories in the same setting. What did the "people" of Ib ever do to deserve the hate of Sarnath? The beings that inhabited Ib seemed to just keep to themselves. They are described as having "bulging eyes, pouting, flabby lips, and curious ears, and were without voices". Is it just simple pure xenophobia that drove the people of Sarnath to kill them all, or were there unstated incursions into Sarnath? The story does does not describe the denizens of Ib as anything other than ugly, and maybe that was enough for the people of Sarnath.

In the end the people of Sarnath got what they deserve, which is a somewhat surprising result considering how deeply xenophobic HPL was at the time of the writing. One would expect a Sarnath apologist viewpoint.

I always feel like Doom has an almost cinematic feel to it. Even though the story is brief the setting is lush and very interesting.

I don't hate it. It makes room to tell new "old" stories without just completely dismissing canon. The idea of a "fixed point in time" is a concept that I think originated with Doctor Who. The Strange New Worlds concept is similar, but instead of a fixed point its a fixed event or fixed outcome.

I do wonder though, how much of this "time pushing back" is actually that? Or is it actually just the "Federation Time Cops" from the far future making sure things happen even if someone successfully meddles with history. I actually kind of hate the concept of time travel being a thing in Star Trek. Leave it to shows like Doctor Who.

I do appreciate your feedback, but I think at a minimum that anyone trying to run a Lemmy instance in Docker should know how to install docker and docker compose and how to run basic commands like docker compose up -d. There are many tutorials out there for doing just that and I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel. Once you have gotten that part done my document kicks in and picks up where the official documentation is currently lacking (in my opinion).

I do explain a lot, but I did my best to explain it in terms that most anyone could understand.

I will take your feedback to heart and maybe try to write a step by step tutorial for people who are completely new to Docker as well.

Thanks for your comment, but I don't see much value in pulling a new copy of the docker-compose.yml from the Lemmy GitHub. The only things I would be updating when Lemmy updates is the tag/version. If they added new environment variables some time in the future I could certainly take a look at their updated compose file to see the changes but I wouldn't want to pull it down and replace my custom compose.

I specifically don't care for their (Lemmy devs) choices for logging, docker networking, and the built in nginx, so removing and simplifying all that was my main goal. Everyone has their own way of doing things, and this is mine.

I will probably take a look at your Traefik configs and add them as a separate document for those that don't want to use NPM. My goal is to add a subsection for most of the current revproxy choices.

I do not recommend using Ansible. It adds additional requirements and complexities that are unnecessary. Ansible is a great tool for managing multiple servers and software installs, in my opinion it is not the right tool to install Lemmy on a single instance. My install instructions require only that you have docker and docker compose installed.

That said, you could easily replace the docker-compose.yml that Ansible set up for you with the one I am providing. Just don't run Ansible against your server again or it will wipe out your changes.

Seems like the best thing to do would be to run that on a daily schedule and also ideally something done in the ui. I worry for those admins that just "followed the recipe" to get a Lemmy instance up and running but lack any real sysadmin ability.

I think theres probably a big overlap between the novice admins and the instances where the admins are unaware they are getting flooded with bot registration.

Opinion: Open registration is just asking for future legal trouble

I'm sure I'm not the first to think about this, but I haven't seen it mentioned yet. I believe there is another problem with open registration instances besides just the threat of spamming. If you go through the process of making a new post in ANY community and you attach an image and then cancel the post the image is STILL on the server at the given URL and is publically viewable if someone has that URL. Theoretically, someone could upload illegal images this way and hotlink to them from another site. Because there are no posts on the instance with the bad image attached an instance admin would have no way of knowing the images were there unless they make a habit of browsing the pict-rs datastore regularly. There's currently no easy way to moderate or delete images in the pict-rs datastore. I don't think I need to elaborate more on what kinds of images could be lurking on your very own server which could be hotlinked into VERY dark places on the web. Saying that you "didnt know" that they were there is not a defense. When the authorities are knocking on your door because you are hosting illegal images you will be sorry that you didn't take a more active role in your user base. I realize that even if you close or set manual registration that there's still the danger of a bad user doing this very thing, but I think putting in some minor hurdles would greatly decrease the chances. Regardless, I think there needs to be a better way to manage the pict-rs part of Lemmy and an easy way for admins and instance owners to be able to view EVERY attachment on their server to make sure there's nothing there that could get them in trouble. I run a small instance that just have people I personally know on it, so it's not a worry for me. But the larger instances that are opening signups to strangers should be aware and take precautions.

Community discovery that spans all federated instances should be one of the top things that development should be working on. And it should be integrated into Lemmy, not as a website people have to go to and search.

Peoples are lazy. They don't want to have to go to some separate website and then search for something. And lets not even get started on the difficulties of adding a remote community if your instance doesn't know it exists, its wonky at best.

If a user cant type "Stephen King community" in the search bar on their instance and then get results, they are either going to assume it doesn't exist OR they are going to be hitting that "Create Community" button.

Of the themed instances that exist now, I'd be willing to bet that in addition to their local communities they host that they also subscribe to other communities that aren't strictly related to whatever theme they are going with.

For example, I'm sure the Star Trek instance also subscribes to the lemmy@lemmy.ml community so the admin can stay abreast of Lemmy news. And probably also follows other technology related communities as well.

I think most people would just want to gravitate to whatever they want to be identified with. There's nothing stopping you from joining a music themed instance and then adding some non-music subscriptions to your list. It doesn't force those subs on anyone else on the instance.

And if you don't want to be identified with any specific topic or community, you can always join a general Lemmy instance like Beehaw or Lemmy.world and subscribe to whatever you like piecemeal.

    Honestly, I hope not.

For example, if all the "programming" communities ended up on a single instance, that is still a single point of failure. I think it would be better if they were spread out a bit. That way if the programming themed instance went down unexpectedly it wouldn't take ALL the programming communities out with it, only the ones it hosts.

There's nothing stopping anyone from creating a programming themed instance and then subscribing to various programming communities on other instances and then creating their own local communities to fill in the gaps. And ideally, I think that's what should happen.

I was never insinuating that an instance owner should limit their scope. But just because you run an instance doesn't mean you have to be the home node for the communities you are interested in. It goes against the idea of federation. If a community already exists on another instance, as an instance owner you should subscribe to that community rather than making your own. That increases resilience.

Hot take. I think the instances that are trying to be Reddit are the ones that give their users carte blanche to create new communities without any thought of looking to see if the same community exists elsewhere. I'd prefer that community creation be limited to the admins of each instance, that way they could - hopefully - at least do a cursory search to see if the community exists already and then just add it to THEIR instances subscriptions. There's a reason why every community shouldn't be on a single instance. It's a single point of failure.

Searching from my private instance is no more/less secure in terms of privacy than it would be if I did a Google search. The search endpoints (Google, Bing, DDG, etc) all know the IP that the search is coming from even if its passing through SearXNG first. So if I was doing something shady, I could easily be tracked down that way.

The main reason I run my own SearXNG is so I can strip ads and search multiple search providers from a single search.

    I'm assuming you're using docker.

Make sure you have websockets support turned on.

You might also try to add custom locations under NPM. I made those changes at the same time I made some changes to the "advanced" tab of NPM. I'm not sure which thing fixed it, or maybe it required both. Try this, and if it still doesn't work, then add the advanced tab settings farther down this reply.

You will need custom locations in your NPM proxy host settings for Lemmy for the following paths.

    /api

    /feeds

    /pictrs

    /nodeinfo

They should point to the container that is running the lemmy application, not the UI one, just the lemmy one and to port 8536. If your NPM is not on the same docker network as lemmy, you will need to expose port 8536 on the lemmy container and add it to the lemmyexternalproxy network.

If those changes don't bring you joy, try also adding the following lines to the "advanced" tab of your NPM proxy host settings for Lemmy.

    proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;

    proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $remote_addr;

I hope to see this community take off and take precedence over the one on lemmy.ml. I have been disappointed the past couple of days because most of the IT related subs seemed to be there and they have only been intermittently available and they seem to be having some trouble with federating their content to other instances. It's not their fault, they are clearly being hugged much too tightly.

Also I know its just the nature of things to have competing subs, even on Reddit it happened. But I'd prefer not to have a split-brain situation with a sysadmin community nor do I want to be forced in to cross posting everything to both communities to increase my chances of engagement.

Just FYI, the "All" tab only lists the communities that the instance you are on is subscribed to. You can get a larger searchable list from https://browse.feddit.de/ although it only seems to be updated once a day or so.

If you find something that interests you on the feddit search page, you can manually search for and add that community to the instance your account is on.

Just copy the link to the community from the search page and paste it into the search box on your instance. You may also need to change the top dropdown on the Search page from Communities to All, depending on if someone else on your instance has previously searched for it.

You should then see the community listed in the results as something like Community Name - X subscribers. Click that link, then click subscribe on the top right box on the next page.

Sorry, I must have missed that point in my first read through. I think we will see a lot of changes with Lemmy as development proceeds. It seems like that particular 404 is being generated in the Lemmy software rather than the webserver portion because that is not a standard 404 message. So instead of generating that message it could probably be fixed to kick off a "manual" search instead of generating an error. We will have to leave that to the Lemmy devs though.

I tried doing that with a previously unsearched/unsubscribed community as a test on my own instance, and I got a 404: couldnt_find_community error when clicking the link. As you stated, it seems like in most cases that special link will not work unless someone has previously manually searched for the same community in your instance.

I think I'd rather link directly to the instance for the community than get a 404 error. For most people, getting the 404 will just deter them from proceeding further.

Perhaps it would be best to include both links in a post?

Having some additional messaging about how communities work, and how to subscribe to them would help. I'm sorry that I assumed you didn't know how to do that. I meant no offense but there's no harm in providing free information that you (or someone else reading this post) might not know about.

There's no way for an instance to know that you have an account on some other instance so the subscribe button assumes you are a local user. Maybe that could be addressed in the future, I don't know what the plans are.

At a minimum I would think the subscribe button could have some logic that can detect whether you are logged in or not and then give you some options. Like, log into your account if you have one on this instance, or if you don't here are instructions for adding this community to YOUR instance.

But other instances that subscribe to asklemmy@lemmy.ml (and any other communities that are based on lemmy.ml) continue to federate with EACH OTHER, so any new posts and replies that originate from those instances are being synced between those instances that aren't being crushed.

I don't know what happens when lemmy.ml is back to normal operations. I assume (and hope) that all the posts and replies that were synced out to other instances will eventually make their way back to the "home" community at lemmy.ml.

Users on lemmy.ml are having a really bad experience right now. I advise you to abandon/delete your lemmy.ml account and set up an account on a different instance.

Yes you can subscribe to and read/reply to that community from any lemmy instance. You just need to add it if the instance doesn't already federate with it.

Go to 'Communities' at the top of your instance homepage then in the search bar put the url of the community you want to add. (example: https://beehaw.org/c/programming)

This next part is undocumented, and might just be a bug. But this is the magic part.

On the next page, change the top search dropdown from Communities to All.

You will see the community you want to sub to in the results. It will say something like.

    Programming@beehaw.org - 0 subscribers

Click it, then on the top right pane click "Subscribe"

    Done

Making specialized instances does not in any way make hopping around necessary. If you join a specialized instance that doesn't already sub to the communities you want, you just add them.

Example: I join a Star Trek themed instance that has a bunch of locally created star trek communities. I want to sub to all those, but i ALSO want to sub to the homelab community on beehaw. I just subscribe to !homelab@beehaw.org FROM the star trek instance I am a member of. That star trek instance will then start syncing the homelab content from beehaw and you can read and reply from the star trek instance.

Conversely, if someone has an account on beehaw.org and they want to read a star trek community based on that star trek instance, they just need to sub to it FROM beehaw.org.

suggestion for guiding new account signups

First I want to say that I love the idea of Lemmy. I think it's very reminiscent of the old days of BBS's and networked message boards (FIDOnet). With that in mind I'd like to suggest that maybe some thought should go into guiding people to the right instances to sign up on. I think more instances should try to specialize in certain content and host communities that cater to that. Much like the BBS's of the olden days you could have an instance that is all about sports, or an instance specializing in comic book communities, or an instance that caters to a certain region or state. With that in mind, it would be great to have a page that indexes instances by interest groups so people could make better decisions about which instance to join rather than just everyone trying to pile up on lemmy.ml. Thoughts?

What's your favorite episode? I am currently re-watching the series and my favorite as always is Hammer Into Anvil. ::: spoiler spoiler It's my favorite because I love how #6 turns the tables and through his actions makes #2 paranoid. :::

I am not a number, I am a free man!

I started this server and this community to bring together like minded people. I haven’t seen a Prisoner community in the community browser so I figured I would take matters into my own hands. Be seeing you!
