At the beginning of the season I bought a beautiful teal 1988 Trek 1000 and have been riding the hell out of it. Unfortunately all that riding has come at a price, Ive ruined two rear wheels(rims) over the span of a few months. I know I can tuck my tail and head back into the shop to have them lace me up a new wheel (they got me back on the road for a good price the first time) but I'd like to take a stab at building a wheel myself. __So my question, how hard is it to build a wheel?__ * I've watched the park tools wheel building and truing videos and I'm sure they make it look easier than it really is. * There's a few shops around me that do "open shop" hours a few times a week that i plan on taking advantage of if i actually do this. * I also looked at just getting a new wheelset but then discovered the freewheel vs cassette change and the old hub width is the old 126mm standard and decided it might be easier if i just learned to lace a wheel and put a new rim on. _(I guess I'm actually just looking for some encouragement, tips)_

I really enjoyed the Sweet Roll I joined in July, their next ride is coming up latter this month and I can't wait to see what they have planned this time around. I still have dreams about the almond croissant from Bitter Sweet.
BFF starts up their fall brewery rides later this month(the 22nd) as well, I'm going to try to make it to at least one of these before it gets too cold! (https://www.bffbikes.com/events/9/22/september-22-brewery-crawl)
I'll be posting about both again as they get closer.
We're about 3 months into this little experiment and we recently passed 100! I think I'm going to play with having one of these chat threads pinned to the top and rotate them out every month or so depending on reception. Passing 100 seems like a good excuse to try this. I'd love for folks to drop in and say hi, and maybe share a ride you enjoyed over the summer!

RESCHEDULED TO THE 27th! Robust community inputters! We are tired of the City drawing up plans that don’t do enough to protect vulnerable road users. Even worse? When they consider it and toss out protected lanes because…parking? It’s challenging? Unacceptable! It’s time to __jam it up.__

If you want a good sense of how bad it is in the states here are two episodes of Freakomomics that do a job of exposing the issue.
"The Perfect Crime": https://freakonomics.com/podcast/the-perfect-crime/ (From 2014)
Then a follow-up episode: "Why Is the U.S. So Good at Killing Pedestrians?": https://freakonomics.com/podcast/why-is-the-u-s-so-good-at-killing-pedestrians/ (from July 2023)
McSweeney's bringing some hard truths with this one. We could all be doing better. >__You forgot to go back in time and tell people that subsidizing the oil industry might be a bad idea.__ When the oil and auto industries teamed up to bend public policy to their will, making a system of roads and parking lots that now function as a continuous subsidy and magnificent symbol of the normalization of injury and pollution, you had a lot of options. You could have objected. You could have shifted public opinion. Instead, you weren’t even born yet. And, rather than go back in time, all you’ve been doing is riding to get groceries and occasionally saying, “Please stop killing us.” On the effort scale? 1/10.

Damn this blew up! (I removed the comments with the really annoying/over-the-top emotes. )
My first Street Calling Ride! This ride was a lot of fun, I loved riding through the city at night with a big crowd. The turnout was great, I'd say there was over 100 riders at one point. The pace was faster than a Critical Mass ride so that was fun (~9mph). They encourage folks to bring speakers so there was plenty of music to keep the "vibes high", I even saw a few folks I recognized from CM. I'm definitely going to have to catch another one of these, and may even try to join one of their other rides. Would recommend.

Im not pretending to be an expert in city planning but lowering the default limit seems like a good place to start.
People still driving crazy? Advocate for a camera(both replies i got said it was the only way it’s enforced and I agree, and lets not bring a cop with a gun into every speeding violation), or for traffic calming devices(speed bumps, narrowing streets with bollards, etc) . If you make it harder to speed on side streets people are going to go back to the thoroughfares as it should be and enforcing those lower limits elsewhere becomes less of an issue.
I’m just spitballing.
pbrisgreat 1 year ago • 100%
Ive been thinking about the city speed limit since that report came out in June. 30 absolutely too high, it should really be 25 or even 20, especially on residential streets.
Chicago ranked 161st out of 163 big cities and scored a seven out of 100. Speed limits tanked the city’s bikeability. The report’s analysis considers streets with a 30 mph speed limit — a standard for most Chicago streets — or higher as unsafe for cycling.
“The person who wrote the People For Bikes report told Streetsblog last year that if Chicago had a 25 mph speed limit, we would shoot up to being the 15th best city in the U.S. in their rankings.”
The Federal Highway Administration has found that a car traveling 30 mph that hits a pedestrian has a 45% chance of killing or seriously injuring them, while at 20 mph, the likelihood of death drops to 5%

I've been thinking about this comment a lot recently. I appreciate the perspective, the "leftist" affiliation hadn't initially bothered me (my people) but I can see why folks might be hesitant about it, and I think this conversation could be important if we want to keep growing.
One of the best parts about the fediverse is we can host this community anywhere, and you don't necessarily need to create an account on midwest.social to interact and participate so folks have the option to ignore the rest of the server.
I appreciate the fact that both /c/Chicago and /c/Chibike are on a regional server catering to the Midwest but I'd go where the community is.

Its that time of the month again, BFF's monthly endurance ride is happening this Sunday. Meet at the shop at 8:30am! Last month we went down to Wolf Lake and back, 53 miles round trip, at a 15.4mph average. They haven't stated which route they're taking this time, I'll update this if I see a route get posted. >If you want to run a railroad, you should be on it. These __fat-cat elites__ are far removed from the real life of public transportation. The biggies are too busy, their matters too important, to bother with the CTA. They have no clue about what it’s like to search for safety on a train car as the thieves and miscreants prey on riders. Ive had a few other KO mackerel tins before and have liked them a lot, the one in just olive oil is probably one of my favorite sub $5 tins. This was my first time trying the Mediterranean style. I had it with my personal favorite, triscuits, and was very impressed with it, exceptional straight from the can. It was a great snack. The fish is super “buttery” and tender and the seasoning here seemed nicer than their Mediterranean sardines. The fish gives the Patagonia mackerel some competition. Definitely worth picking up and trying. Side note: just picked up a few tiny forks for just such occasions, i loved having it.
Lumpen Radio and International Anthem are doing a really interesting 24hr broadcast on Lumpen featuring some local (and not) heavyweights, like Star Creature and Numero, starting tonight at midnight and ending with a live preference by two local jazz giants; Damon Locks and Rob Mazurek, tomorrow night at 9. Some local record shops will also be broadcasting it in store as well( including, 606, pinwheel, reckless, and more) Should be a good listen 📻 From the email: >TOMORROW IS LISTENING will be available on terrestrial FM radio in the Chicago area via Lumpen Radio (105.5 FM); but more importantly, we have a growing list of independent record shops across the globe who will be tuning in. That means: you can properly participate in this special day by leaving your solo reality tunnel, heading out IRL and listening to this broadcast in the community of friends and fellow music lovers at the cultural/communal sanctuary of your local record shop. The list of shops who will be tuned to the broadcast gets bigger by the minute.
It sounds like the plan is to keep the ride short and cool down after with a dip in the lake so come prepared 🏊 It's gonna be a hot one tomorrow! The high is going to be around 100 at 3pm and it will likely still be in the mid-to-high 90s when we roll, __stay safe, stay hydrated!__

This is a great example of why non-compete clauses are anti-worker, and why you should grow-your-own (or find your local home-grower). If they weren't playing lawyer wars maybe they could drop their prices a little? Fuck Cresco.

We have long way to go but we aren't nearly as bad as this makes it sound.
The fact Philly scored better is actually kind of astounding(4th place large city), I used to live in Philly and that was the city that scared me off a bike, it wasn't until I moved out here that I felt safe enough to ride in the city. Kind of hate that Block Club is giving this report the time of day.

Au Cheval is nice but damn do they make you wait! I'll be adding Rubi's and Monster to my list.
I finally tried Phodega on Ashland. I got the Beef Pho, my partner got the chicken Bahn Mi, and we shared an order of fried pork dumplings. To close out the meal we got some of their house-made Ube cookies and those were tasty and a lot of fun, ube seems to be having a moment.
Everything was pretty good but the dumplings stole the show, almost wish I had just gotten 2 orders of those. I got the beef Pho because it's their signature dish but I'm not sure id get it again, it was a little boring and flat and those meat balls were FIRM. It wasn't bad, just not exciting, there were definitely better things on the menu.
Next visit I'll be trying their chicken fried rice.

I've known about the Bike Angel program for a little while now but never looked into it. In a nutshell you can get rewarded for helping redistribute the classic bikes across the city, they do a good job gamifying it too. Last week curiosity got the best of me and I took a look at the program and its rewards. I saw you can extend the base ride from 45 to 60 minutes if you worked the program a little bit and hit the first "achievement". You can also cash out points to extend your subscription (if you worked the program enough you can extend it indefinitely) or for Lyft credit (car/scooter/ebike) So on Friday I set out to hit 250 over 3 days with my partners subscription. She recently got one so we can ride together and she wouldn't have to deal with everything that comes with being a 3rd floor bike owner (mainly getting the bike up and down the stairs). Here are some take-aways: - Its more walking than riding, I walked between 5-6 miles each day. I had a much better time wearing walking shoes vs the shoes I wear riding. - I put in between 2-3 hours each day - Its all about maintaining the multiplier streak between days. 4 positive rides in a row resets the multiplier clock. Try to plan it so you only need one "positive" ride to restart the clock the next day. - Finding drop off/pick up loops with a short walk is the best way to get a lot of points quickly, I had a lot of luck in the West Loop. - I cashed out 150 points for $30 in lyft credit that she can use for ebikes when we want to haul ass. - Fun/different way to get some exercise and see the city - The newer classic bikes (they have the same style basket as the ebikes) are definitely a better ride than the older beat up ones with only 3 gears. - Cracking the top 20 leader board was a lot of fun - I'm probably done with it now that I unlocked the 60 minutes rides, the other perks don't really seem worth it to me, but we'll see. - They're gonna send me a dumb pin that I'm actually excited about __Happy to answer any questions!__

Chicago style pizzas arent cut out for a to go slice. Im surprised someone is even doing a deep dish slice to go, sounds like a mess. And as a Jersey kid the crackery thin crust style they got out here just isnt worth the trouble, and they don’t reheat very well.
Im actually not surprised NY style slices dominate this list, they just do it better and are more forgiving to a reheat.
