It's astounding that Prigozhin was so naive as to think that he could attempt a coup against Putin, and then simply retire in exile to Belarus. Everybody knew something like this would happen, except Prigozhin himself apparently. People have suffered 'unfortunate accidents' at the hands of Putin for far less.

Backwards compatibility is the best feature of Xbox, and I don't understand why Sony is so far behind on this

When I got the XSX recently, it was so I can play Starfield when it comes out. That was basically the only reason. I did not realize the extensive backwards compatibility that this thing has. But since getting it, I've been playing FF13 trilogy, Fable games, Dragon Age series, Lost Odyssey, etc. Basically all games of note going all the way back to the OG Xbox will play on the latest console. Either with the original disc, or you can even purchase them online. The point of my post is I think it's a real travesty that PlayStation doesn't do this. I don't understand it. First of all, you cannot buy most PS1-PS3 games on the digital store. You can't use the discs. The main way to get access to these games is through the top tier of PS+. But the selection is quite limited, and PS3 games in particular are streaming only. With the selection, I want to point out that you can't even play most of the Killzone series on PS+. This is a first party title. There is absolutely no reason that Killzone shouldn't be available. Killzone 1 isn't even on there. A PS2 title that is not graphically demanding. As for the streaming of PS3 games, maybe this was justifiable back on the PS4 because the PS3 has a unique architecture that can be difficult to emulate without performance drops. But with the capabilities of the PS5, it's not credible to claim that it can't emulate a PS3. It certainly could, if Sony wanted to assign resources to make an emulator. I am not a fanboy of one or the other, and I probably still play more on the PS5 than my Xbox, but I think Microsoft should market their backwards compatibility superiority a lot more than they currently do.

    Best sub-20 hour games?

I have been on a kick lately with short games. Because I'm a parent with a hectic job, it's really nice to be able to beat a game in just a few days. I've played both Plague Tale games (10 & 20 hours respectively), Stray (7 hours), and Alan Wake (10 hours). All great stories, very atmospheric, and felt like just the right length for what they were. Any other good story-heavy games that are pretty short? Throw any and all recommendations at me!

As long as you download it now, then you can keep the game as long as you're a member of PS+. So if you even think you might play it in the future, download it now. Once it rotates off the subscription, then it won't be available for download anymore (but people who already downloaded it can keep it).

Stray is one of the best short games I've ever played.

If you're not familiar with Stray, it's a PS4/PS5 game where you play as a cat. It's a very short game; the main story can be beaten in an afternoon. However, it's available on PS+ (although going away soon), and can be purchased outright for <$30. It's the first time in a long time where I felt totally delighted by how innovative and different a video game was. First of all, playing as a cat isn't just a cute gimmick. The level designs are all about navigating around slums using your size and acrobatic abilities of a cat. Second, the world that the devs have created is so cool. It's like some sort of cyberpunk version of Kowloon Walled City. This game is not Elden Ring. But for an afternoon, it's absolutely worth your time. I can't recommend it enough. Especially if you are finding yourself burned out by the usual types of games. I hope the devs follow up with something else adjacent to this game!

MS should have allowed them an exception to leave the split screen coop mode out of the Series S version (how many people will even use that feature?)

Even if they manage to get it working, this game will now come out later on Xbox, even though it's not a timed exclusive. So in effect MS is just handing Sony a free timed exclusive for no good reason, because they stubbornly insist on complete feature parity between XSX and XSS.

As we get further and further into this console generation, this is going to happen more and more due to the XSS's lower horsepower. Microsoft needs to reevaluate their policy for feature parity.

If you haven't read it, I'd also recommend "In the Garden of Beasts", also by Larson. It's about the American Ambassador to Germany and his family living through the rise of Nazi Germany and how surreal the entire thing is.

But then when you join a small instance, it gets botted exactly because it's small and the admins don't have the resources. So now I am back to square one! I don't have loyalty to any particular instance, I just want to see everything from everybody, and it feels like it shouldn't be this difficult. Sorry for venting.

Post any kind of dissenting opinion and you'll get downvoted into absolute oblivion. And I'm not just speaking about politics. You can write a well thought out comment in any sub that goes against the grain, and the culture is just totally to downvote for disagreement. I think my most downvoted comment of all time on Reddit was on r/juicing when I questioned whether carrot juice was actually effective for depression lol.

And of course, in the political space, we see it all the time to try and dismiss any pro-worker arguments. In the United States, labeling someone as a socialist has been used as a Q.E.D. in itself for decades. I hope that's changing.

Disturbingly, there is really no way to know who actually owns a private company like Reddit. Once it goes public, then the owners will be the shareholders (and in reality, the owners are the major shareholders who have a controlling stake).

The only clue to the current ownership is whatever management wishes to disclose. Spez wrote a blog post in 2021 indicating that they issued $250M in "series E funding" to existing and new investors.

If there are any finance bros around here, they may be able to dig up some sort of disclosures from bond auctions to try and see who bought it.

The only confirmed investor I know about is Tencent. They invested in 2019. Its possible they were also some of the "existing investors" Spez referred to in 2021.

Bottom line: nobody knows who owns Reddit. But apparently the owners think this guy Spez is a good fit to run their company, somehow.

    Gamepass vs Physical games

I just got an XSX today and I'm excited to get playing some games! This might be a stupid question, but do you guys find that Gamepass is worth it? My main concern is what if I start playing a game and then they take it away; does that happen often? I want to play MS Flight Sim 2020 and can't decide whether to buy the game or just get GamePass. Also, is GamePass Ultimate worth the premium? Seems like the main difference is that you also get the catalog of EA games, is that basically the difference?

Even if Microsoft did make CoD Xbox exclusive, I don't think that would be that big of a deal for Sony and Nintendo, as they have countless other draws.

My pet peeve is when people take time during their video to put in an ad that is part of the video itself, so it's not skippable like traditional Youtube ads. You have to use the seeker to fast forward past the ad.

I have YT premium (we get it with our cell phone plan), so I'm even paying these people for the videos, yet am still being served ads. I wish YouTube would institute a policy against it.

I have a PS5, but am thinking of getting one of the Xbox series consoles because there are a couple of specific games I want to play (Microsoft Flight Simulator and Lost Odyssey for the 360).
